In this market, Chinese consumers are now the largest spenders. It’s clear that a new generation of young, materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its self-image. I am a fashionist too, at least in spirit---I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don’t understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels. When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that’s a scary thing. What’s interesting is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesn’t lead to happiness. Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them we don’t suddenly become “happy” people. In fact, a series of studies by Leaf Van Boven at the University of Colorado, US, has shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those who invest it in material things. That’s because experiences are more easily combined with a person’s identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think in the future. My memories become a part of me. Moreover, as Van Boven has observed, young people who pursue happiness through “things” are liked less by their peers. People prefer those who pursue happiness through experiences. It’s natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is: create a look that isn’t tied to a designer label. Convey your own message. Take some lessons from the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. He was always in Levis jeans and a black turtleneck. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers. These people, successful people, have style. You don’t have to break the bank to send a message about who you are. Take a trip. Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look. 58. What can we infer from the first three paragraphs? A. The author enjoys buying luxury brands herself. B. The author agrees to spend money on material things. C. The author is critical of youths tying their looks to designer labels. D. The author finds it natural for fashionists to follow fashion trends. 59. Leaf Van Boven’s studies showed that ______. A traveling changes a person’s identity greatly B. people dislike those who love luxuries C. experiences can bring people more happiness than luxuries D. luxuries have a negative effect on people’s happiness 60. What is the author’s advice on expressing oneself? A. Be selective about designer labels. B. Create your own personal unique style. C. Choose styles that are simple and comfortable. D. Try styles like Mark Zuckerberg’s. 61. The main purpose of the article is to ______. A. persuade readers to invest in experiences instead of luxuries B. prove how luxury leads to an unpleasant life C. tell how to express yourself through appearances D. report on a series of studies about luxuries and happiness C Chemists have sped up evolution, harnessing a process that can take millions of years in the natural world and using it—in months or weeks—to make unusual molecules that today are used for everything from “green” biofuels(生物燃料) to cancer drugs. Today that speed and efficiency was rewarded with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Frances H. Arnold won half of the 2018 prize for directing evolution in a test tube, speeding up the natural selection of the most productive enzymes(酶) to drive chemical reactions. The other half of the prize went to George P. Smith and Sir Gregory P. Winter. All three scientists took Charles Darwin's idea of natural selection, in which molecules(分子) or organisms accumulate mutations(突变) in a slow, random process, and figured out ways to identify and select specific mutations that improve the ability of molecules such as proteins and enzymes. By picking and choosing enzymes with improved abilities and repeatedly refining them, Arnold ended up with one that performed 256 times better than the original. “This was a revolution based on evolution ,” says Claes Gustafsson, a member of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry. “Now you can use these enzymes to speed up reaction and to replace poisonous chemicals.” Arnold began her line of research in the early 1990s. In a speech several years ago she said the notion of improving on the natural course of evolution was an idea that needed to come from an outsider. “Twenty five years ago it was considered the lunatic fringe(狂热者,极端分子),” Arnold said in 2014. “Scientists didn't do that. Gentlemen didn't do that. But since I’m an engineer and not a gentleman. I had no problem with that.” Smith's research, begun in the 1980s,used a bacteriophage(噬菌体). Genes code for proteins, and Smith got his phages to display those proteins on their outer coats. He then used antibodies to fish out the proteins he was interested in. This process is called phage display. The ability to select specific proteins, cycle their genes back through the phage, and again fish out the best ones sped up natural selection. Winter put the genes for antibodies inside phages, got the phages to produce antibodies on their coats, and used a small molecule to fish out only antibodies that had a particular kind of binding site(结合部位), so Winter had developed a way of producing highly efficient antibodies in a short period of time. Because of this, Claes says, “Now we can use antibody drugs with greater efficiency and fewer side effects.” Of the 15 mostsold drugs on the planet, she says, 11 are now made by processes based on this method. 62. Why does the Nobel Prize in Chemistry go to Frances H. Arnold? A. She followed Charles Darwin's idea of natural selection. B. She found ways to use viruses to produce powerful proteins. C. She developed a way of producing highly efficient antibodies. D. She directed evolution and accelerated the natural selection of enzymes. 63. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 imply? A. She was regarded as a lunatic fringe. B. She dared to break through conventional idea. C. She took advantage of her gender(性别). D. She was supported by other scientists. 64. What attitude does Claes Gustafsson hold towards the use of antibody drugs? A. Critical. B. Ambiguous. C. Casual. D. Favorable. 65. What's the best title for the passage? A. Revolution in Evolution Wins 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry B. Three Scientists Speeding up the Natural Selection of the World C. Charles Darwin's idea of natural selection becoming outdated D. Scientists Finding a New Method for Wresting with Cancer D For the second time in two years, an American has won one of the most respected global awards in literature. At a ceremony in London on Tuesday night, George Saunders accepted the 2017 Man Booker Prize for Lincoln in the Bardo, his first novel. The book is an impressive and experimental ghost story set in 1862. It explores the death of Willie Lincoln, President Abraham Lincoln’s 11-year-old son, who died of fever during the second year of the Civil War. Saunders, a Tibetan Buddhist, imagines Willie’s experiences in the “bardo,” a Buddhist state between the worlds of the living and the dead where Willie communicates with other dead souls, and where he watches his father visit his entombed body. Writing in The Guardian earlier this year, Saunders described the process of creating the novel: “There is something wonderful in watching a figure appear from the stone, feeling the presence of something within you ... and also beyond you—something consistent, willful, kind and generous, that seems to have a plan, which seems to be: to lead you to your own higher ground.” Saunders was the bookmakers’ favorite to win the award, but the victory by an American writer immediately after Paul Beatty claimed the prize for his novel The Sellout is controversial. Before 2014, the Man Booker was qualified only to writers from the Commonwealth and the Republic of Ireland. The decision to allow American writers to enter has disappointed authors including A.S. Byatt and Julian Barnes, who argue that the award’s main purpose was giving exposure to writers who were little-known in the broader American literary market. “The Americans have got enough prizes of their own,” Barnes told the Radio Times last year. Ron Charles, the book critic for The Washington Post, has also argued against the inclusion of Americans. “For any serious reader of fiction in this country,” Charles wrote in September, “the Americanization of the Booker Prize is a lost opportunity to learn about great books that haven’t already been publicly announced.” Baroness Young, The Telegraph reported, stated that the judging panel was concerned only with the worth of the books on the shortlist(入围名单), which also included Mohsin Hamid’s refugee parable Exit West, Paul Auster’s complex epic 4321, Emily Fridlund’s coming-of-age tale The History of Wolves, and Fiona Mozley’s rural fable Elmet. “We’re only concerned with the book and what that book is telling us,” Young said. “Nationality is just not an issue.” For Saunders, the prize is an extraordinary recognition of his first attempt into full-length novels. The 58-year-old writer was previously best-known for his short stories, which have won him four National Magazine Awards for fiction and a MacArthur Fellowship. He came to writing relatively late in life after studying geophysical engineering and working as a technical writer until 1996. The idea for Lincoln in the Bardo came to him, he wrote in The Guardian, during a visit to Washington, D.C., when his wife told him the story of a grief-stricken President Lincoln visiting Willie’s tomb to hold his son’s body. Saunders has often noted that the experience of writing for him feels like a way to transform pain and division into something positive. The author Zadie Smith, speaking with Saunders for Interview, noted that “what sets him apart is his willingness not only to go into the heart of darkness but to suggest possible routes out.” 66. Ron Charles’ words intended to tell us that ________. A. Saunders’ novel Lincoln in the Bardo was not serious B. the Man Booker shouldn’t include works written by American C. the Man Booker lost the opportunity to learn about great works from America D. the judging panel was concerned only with the worth of books 67. Which of the following writers is probably from the UK? A. Mohsin Hamid. B. Paul Beatty. C. Julian Barnes. D. Emily Fridlund. 68. Baroness Young gave some examples of the shortlist to illustrate _______. A. the prize was awarded based more on content than on nationality B. people should pay more attention to the nationality of the writers C. the Telegraph supports Baroness Young’s opinion on the books on the shortlist D. 4321, The History of Wolves and Elmet were of the same significance as Exit West 69. What gave Saunders the inspiration to write the novel Lincoln in the Bardo? A. The experience of travelling in Washington D.C. B. To lead himself to his own higher ground. C. To go into the hearts of darkness and to suggest possible routes out. D. His wife’s description of Lincoln holding his son’s body. 70. According to the last paragraph, which one of the following statements is true? A. Lincoln in the Bardo is Saunders’ first writing. B. Saunders won four National Magazine Awards for novels. C. Zadie Smith thinks highly of Saunders. D. Saunders is only known for his short stories. Just as team members today have assigned doing roles, there should also be thinking roles. By knowing how other members of your learn and organization think---and by others knowing how you think—everyone can be more productive. So how should you evaluate how you and your team think? After a lot of trial-and-error, we developed a three-step method that delivers practical and meaningful results. Focus. Do you tend to pay the most attention to ideas, process, action, or relationships? For example, in the morning do you think about the problems you need to solve, the plans you need to make, the actions you need to take, or the people you need to see? This isn’t about picking one to the exclusion(排除)of the other. It’s about where your focus naturally lands. Orientation(方向). A good way to identify your orientation is thinking about what tends to bother you in meetings. Are you more likely to complain about getting dragged into the weeds or about things being too general and not specific enough? These dimensions are complementary( 补 充 的 )to personality, skills, and traditional roles. Combination. By combing these two dimensions you can know about the thinking style at work in whatever context or setting you chose. When you know your thinking style, you know what naturally energizes you, why certain type of problems are challenging or boring, and what you can do to improve in areas that are important to reaching your goals. Once you know your style, it helps to share it with others, and have others share theirs with you. In this way, your thinking style becomes a useful tool---a kind of social currency---for the team. Imaging you put together a team to work on a new initiative(行动). Wouldn’t you like to know who is energized by big-picture strategy discussions and who finds them frustrating? Who likes to work on the details of the execution? And who is energized by managing the team dynamics? The landscape of business is changing rapidly, and we have to find new and better ways to connect and communicate. We all want to work better together, the challenge is actually making it happen. Understanding collaboration(合作)through the way of thinking rather than doing is a practical and powerful step forward. What kind of Thinker Are You? Introduction ●Both assigned doing roles and thinking roles are (71) _____________ important among team members. ●Team members knowing how each other think can (72) ____________ productivity. ●The first step is to identify the focus of your (74) ____________in a particular context. ●It is not about making an either-or (75) _____________, but about finding where your focus naturally lands. *The next stop is to identify (76) ____________your orientation swings toward the big picture or the details. *It can help others form a full understanding of you. Three steps in (73) __________thinking styles *The third step is to (77) __________these two dimensions and see your thinking style at work. *It (78) ___________to the understanding of other team members’ thinking styles. Many students have adopted them as efficient learning tools, which may also have negative effects on other students. (31 词) In my opinion, online learning apps are an inseparable part of a student’s life and should be welcomed. After all they are of great help to our study. For example, when I meet with a problem I can’t work out after a few attempts, I will turn to my tutors there. A simple click of the button will bring me the answers, often with detailed analysis and different solutions. Besides, by participating in activities such as talent shows on such websites, I have enjoyed myself and gained confidence. Of course, it is unwise to rely wholly on such online learning apps. However, they can serve as good helpers to us if we learn to employ their advantages and avoid the disadvantages. (153 词) 听力原文: Text 1 W: Good morning! What’s wrong? Can I help? M: I think I need glasses. I can’t read very easily these days. W: Any health problem? Do you have a headache or feel dizzy? M: No. I’m fit and well, otherwise. Text 2 W: Tickets, please. M: Yes, here you are. W: Your ticket is for Oxford. But this train goes to Liverpool. M: What? Liverpool? Oh, no! Text 3 W: Good day at school, Bobby? M: Yeah, pretty good. Except for one little thing … W: Then why do I have a sinking feeling in my stomach? Failed exams? Your teacher wants to talk to me? Or… Text 4 M: Honey, can you believe that we used 26 liters in our car this month? W: You must be kidding! That’s twice the amount of last month Text 5 W: I went to that new furniture store at the weekend, the one that’s like a huge supermarket. M: Did you get anything? W: Not at all. It was hard to make a choice with all that furniture there. Text 6 M: Excuse me but I’d like to change my room. I’m in number twenty-two on the first floor. W: I’m afraid we only had small rooms left by the time you booked, sir. M: I’m not complaining about the size; it’s the TV. It isn’t working (6). W: The TV is an optional extra, sir. Five pounds for twenty-four hours. M: What! I’m astonished that a hotel doesn’t provide even the basics. W: I’m sorry, sir, but that’s where we differ from other hotels near the airport. (7) Text 7 W: I’d like to go dancing with Jane. But she’s hurt her ankle so she’d rather not. M: I guess it means she doesn’t want to play tennis, either. W: That’s right. She says it’s OK to go bowling if we don’t expect her to do well. M: Let’s do it! I guess we can go dancing another time. W: Well, I booked us some time at the bowling center of Entertainment City. (8) M: What time did you book for? W: The first booking I could get was 8 o’clock. M: It’s 7 now (9). What do you want to do first? W: Well, I think we should leave now. M: I can’t be that quick. I have to make a phone call to my mum, and I need to get changed. W: OK. I think I’ll leave in ten minutes. M: I’ll take my car, so I’ll be quite quick. I’ll be out of here in half an hour (9). W: OK. You’re so lucky to have a car! You can get around so easily. M: Well, yes and no. I often spend ages driving around trying to find a car park (10). Text 8 W: Friday finally! Honey, let’s do something fun this weekend! M: I don’t know. What do you have in mind? W: We can go to the lake and have a swim. M: I think it’s going to be hot that day, and I might get a sunburn. How about the library? W: The library is boring. Then how about going mountain biking (12)? M: That sounds great, but I’d probably break my arm or something like I did last time. W: You won’t this time. Come on! M: Well… W: OK. Forget it! How about fishing? Remember the last time we went? I caught like 10 fish... M: Yeah. I remember. And the only thing I caught was an old boot. Just forget it (13). W: OK. What do you suggest? M: We could stay home and uh...pop some popcorn and play board games. W: Listen, let’s try something fun this time! You won’t break your arm or get a sunburn. It’ll be really pleasant. Just give it a try. Come on. Let’s do it. Come on! Text 9 W: I’m feeling really impressed with your work here. M: Thank you. I really love to work as a student doctor here. I have a question for you. But I’m a little nervous to ask you. W: I want to feel it comfortable to be open and honest here. So ask anyway (14). M: So everyone who works here kind of has something they love to do, something they are really good at. For example, Andy, he loves movies. And Cathy, she has her music. She just loves her work so much. And you have your business, which is so cool. W: So you don’t have one thing you love? M: Well, I think I know what it is. W: Tell me, that’s great. M: I want to go back to school. I love learning (15). W: That’s a wonderful idea. M: But I still want to be a student doctor here (15). Is that OK? W: Of course. We can make it work. M: That’s such a relief. I was still so scared to ask you. W: It’s not really a big deal. We can work out a schedule. So what are you going to study? M: I’m interested in so many different things. I think studying back at school will help me decide which direction I want to go (16). Text 10 Along with the subjects, like reading and mathematics, school children at Robert W. Coleman Elementary School are learning yoga exercises. The aim is to provide them with better tools to deal with the daily struggles they face (17). Principle Thompson brought the programme to Coleman in 2010. A few of her students are homeless but others live in homes with no electricity. Some have little or no food to eat, others are related to victims of gun violence. The Mindful Moment Room is a place where students do deep breathing exercises and clear their minds. They come to learn how they can better react to situations (18) and how to calm themselves. They can also speak with Mindful Moment specialists about what caused their teachers to send them there. Principle Thompson believes that yoga is responsible for the drop in leaving school at her school. Over the past year, there was no dropping out of school at Coleman compared to four during the 2013-14 school year. And students are almost never sent to her offices for bad behavior any more (19). For the past half century, yoga has been studied as a possible treatment for anxiety and depression. As for students, there’s some scientific evidence that yoga can help people but more is needed (20). However education expert Patricia Jennings told New York Times that these practices don’t eliminate poverty and may not work for everybody (20).
