In recent years, China has witnessed the growth of luxury (奢侈品) brands. In this market,
Chinese consumers are now the largest spenders. It’s clear that a new generation of young,
materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its self-image.
I am a fashionist too, at least in spirit---I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don’t understand

Chemists have sped up evolution, harnessing a process that can take millions of years in the
natural world and using it—in months or weeks—to make unusual molecules that today are used for
everything from “green” biofuels(生物燃料) to cancer drugs. Today that speed and efficiency was
rewarded with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Frances H. Arnold won half of the 2018 prize for directing evolution in a test tube, speeding up
the natural selection of the most productive enzymes(酶) to drive chemical reactions. The other half of
the prize went to George P. Smith and Sir Gregory P. Winter.
All three scientists took Charles Darwin's idea of natural selection, in which molecules(分子) or
organisms accumulate mutations(突变) in a slow, random process, and figured out ways to identify
and select specific mutations that improve the ability of molecules such as proteins and enzymes. By
picking and choosing enzymes with improved abilities and repeatedly refining them, Arnold ended up
with one that performed 256 times better than the original.
“This was a revolution based on evolution ,” says Claes Gustafsson, a member of the Nobel
Committee for Chemistry. “Now you can use these enzymes to speed up reaction and to replace
poisonous chemicals.”
Arnold began her line of research in the early 1990s. In a speech several years ago she said the
notion of improving on the natural course of evolution was an idea that needed to come from an
outsider. “Twenty five years ago it was considered the lunatic fringe(狂热者,极端分子),” Arnold
said in 2014. “Scientists didn't do that. Gentlemen didn't do that. But since I’m an engineer and not a
gentleman. I had no problem with that.”
Smith's research, begun in the 1980s,used a bacteriophage(噬菌体). Genes code for proteins,
and Smith got his phages to display those proteins on their outer coats. He then used antibodies to fish
out the proteins he was interested in. This process is called phage display. The ability to select specific
proteins, cycle their genes back through the phage, and again fish out the best ones sped up natural

Winter put the genes for antibodies inside phages,got the phages to produce antibodies on their
coats, and used a small molecule to fish out only antibodies that had a particular kind of binding
site(结合部位), so Winter had developed a way of producing highly efficient antibodies in a short
period of time. Because of this, Claes says, “Now we can use antibody drugs with greater efficiency
and fewer side effects.” Of the 15 mostsold drugs on the planet, she says, 11 are now made by

For the second time in two years, an American has won one of the most respected global awards
in literature. At a ceremony in London on Tuesday night, George Saunders
accepted the 2017 Man Booker Prize for Lincoln in the Bardo, his first novel.
The book is an impressive and experimental ghost story set in 1862. It
explores the death of Willie Lincoln, President Abraham Lincoln’s
11-year-old son, who died of fever during the second year of the Civil War.
Saunders, a Tibetan Buddhist, imagines Willie’s experiences in the “bardo,” a
Buddhist state between the worlds of the living and the dead where Willie
communicates with other dead souls, and where he watches his father visit his entombed body.
Writing in The Guardian earlier this year, Saunders described the process of creating the novel:
“There is something wonderful in watching a figure appear from the stone, feeling the presence of
something within you ... and also beyond you—something consistent, willful, kind and generous, that
seems to have a plan, which seems to be: to lead you to your own higher ground.”
Saunders was the bookmakers’ favorite to win the award, but the victory by an American writer
immediately after Paul Beatty claimed the prize for his novel The Sellout is controversial. Before
2014, the Man Booker was qualified only to writers from the Commonwealth and the Republic of
Ireland. The decision to allow American writers to enter has disappointed authors including A.S. Byatt
and Julian Barnes, who argue that the award’s main purpose was giving exposure to writers who were
little-known in the broader American literary market. “The Americans have got enough prizes of their
own,” Barnes told the Radio Times last year. Ron Charles, the book critic for The Washington
Post, has also argued against the inclusion of Americans. “For any serious reader of fiction in this
country,” Charles wrote in September, “the Americanization of the Booker Prize is a lost opportunity

After entering the senior high, I found I had more and more difficulty learning maths and English. As many
online learning products are quite popular among other students, my parents subscribed to one for me too.
After that, however, I feel as if I were going to two schools, one real-world school and one online school.
Every day I have endless exercises to do and feel very tired. Worse still, I feel I have lost interest in my study
now. What shall I do?

As the Internet combines deeply with education, online learning apps are springing up. Many
students have adopted them as efficient learning tools, which may also have negative effects on other

In my opinion, online learning apps are an inseparable part of a student’s life and should be
welcomed. After all they are of great help to our study. For example, when I meet with a problem I
can’t work out after a few attempts, I will turn to my tutors there. A simple click of the button will
bring me the answers, often with detailed analysis and different solutions. Besides, by participating in
activities such as talent shows on such websites, I have enjoyed myself and gained confidence.
Of course, it is unwise to rely wholly on such online learning apps. However, they can serve as
good helpers to us if we learn to employ their advantages and avoid the disadvantages. (153 词)

Along with the subjects, like reading and mathematics, school children at Robert W. Coleman
Elementary School are learning yoga exercises. The aim is to provide them with better tools to deal
with the daily struggles they face (17). Principle Thompson brought the programme to Coleman in
2010. A few of her students are homeless but others live in homes with no electricity. Some have little
or no food to eat, others are related to victims of gun violence. The Mindful Moment Room is a place
where students do deep breathing exercises and clear their minds. They come to learn how they can
better react to situations (18) and how to calm themselves. They can also speak with Mindful Moment
specialists about what caused their teachers to send them there. Principle Thompson believes that yoga
is responsible for the drop in leaving school at her school. Over the past year, there was no dropping
out of school at Coleman compared to four during the 2013-14 school year. And students are almost
never sent to her offices for bad behavior any more (19). For the past half century, yoga has been
studied as a possible treatment for anxiety and depression. As for students, there’s some scientific
evidence that yoga can help people but more is needed (20). However education expert Patricia
Jennings told New York Times that these practices don’t eliminate poverty and may not work for
everybody (20).
