)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将
该项涂黑.
11.(10 分)I was 17 years old. My brother Kyle and I were thinking about writing a book because
it seemed like a good way to reach others and share what we had learned. However, we were
doubtful. Could we really do it? What if no one liked it? What if we failed? What if…
We had to think differently. As teens, we had little to lose by trying and a lot to lose by letting
this opportunity slip by, so we decided to give it a shot. Locked up in our small 10×10 foot
bedroom, which reached 103 degrees on hot summer days, we just started writing. We wrote a
list of goals, people we wanted to meet, things we wanted to own, as well as inspirational
quotations ﹣ anything to keep us focused and motivated.
A few weeks later, a family friend offered us two tickets to a local business conference where
Jack Canfield was the keynote speaker. The event was a valuable experience and at the end of it,
we waited in line for over thirty minutes to personally speak with Jack. We shared our book idea
with him and he didn't laugh! Instead, he offered us the support, encouragement, and insight
we needed to realize our goal.
We finally completed our first book, Cool Stuff They Should Teach in School. The full
process took three and a half years of hard work and sacrifices, but in the end, it was worth
every minute. It was such a strange but rewarding feeling to walk into a bookstore and see our
book on the shelves.
Since its publication, we have enjoyed seeing its impact on other young people and receiving
e﹣mails from readers almost every day. Sure enough, requests to speak at various venues soon
came rolling in.
All of us have opportunities around each day, but most people don't recognize them because
they're often disguised as hard work. It comes down to our ability to see problems as opportunities
and our willingness to take a leap of faith without the guarantee of success. As Michael Nolan once
said, "It's not who we are that holds us back; it's who we think we're not."
(1)The author and his brother decided to write a book .

D.Because they don't have the willingness to succeed.
(4)The main purpose of the author's writing the passage is to .
A. criticize

12.(7.5 分)World travel has moved on to a new level as new websites spring up to enable travelers
to plan their trips online. Virtual tourism is the latest name of the game and although relatively new
, has seen some tourism websites grow to host over one﹣million users.
Typically, this development features a website that contains the answers to almost any tourism
question. Tips and information are not provided by a single source, such as the website host,
but rather from travelers themselves ﹣ ﹣ ﹣ often in the thousands . This has proven to be
exceptionally beneficial for would﹣be travelers who are seeking information on questions such as
where to find the best museum or beach; whether it is better to tour Brussels with a bicycle or on
foot; and which exchange rate bureaus are available in Italy. Questions about food and restaurants
, tourist spots, safety, accommodation and others are all answered. In addition, posted tips
promote better preparation, such as what to pack when heading for Sicily.
Apart from the useful tips, visual images and virtual tours have also been made available. If
you'd like to visit the Eiffel Tower, it's a good idea to view the surrounding areas, to pick a safer 天添资源网 http://www.ttzyw.com/
天添资源网 http://www.ttzyw.com/
train route , or to know that it's very close to the Seine River and that a walk along it would
enhance the experience.
Virtual tours have sprung up globally. In South Africa, John Gore established the Virtual Tour
Guide in November last year. On his blog, Gore was quoted a saying, "The world is panoramic
(全景的). "We are able to turn our heads and look in all directions and get a feel for where we
are, but the typical photograph cannot show or describe that experience completely. " However,
there is an answer ﹣﹣﹣ technology makes it possible to share the world around us in a 360﹣
degree panoramic way, which really makes the viewer feel as though he or she is really there.
(1)What does the underlined word "spring up" in the first paragraph most probably mean?
A.Appear.
B.Move.
C.Compete.
D.Reduce.
(2)Why is virtual tourism more and more popular?
A.Online games are more and more attractive
B.Many new websites appear and grow quickly.
C.It helps travelers make better plans and preparations.
D.It helps travelers save as much money as possible.
(3)What may be talked about in the paragraph to follow the passage?
A.Information is power.
B.Photographs are shown on virtual tours.
C.How technology will further change traveling.
D.What panoramic experience is like.
13.(7.5 分)Why are some people better able to fight off the flu than others? Part of the answer,
according to a new study, is related to the first flu strain we encounter in childhood.
Scientists from UCLA and the University of Arizona have found that people's ability to fight
off the flu virus is determined not only by the subtypes of flu they have had throughout their lives,
but also by the sequence(顺序)in which they have been infected by those viruses. Their study
was published in the open﹣access journal PLoS Pathogens. The research offers an explanation for 天添资源网 http://www.ttzyw.com/
天添资源网 http://www.ttzyw.com/
why some people become much worse than others when infected with the same strain of the flu
virus.
In addition, UCLA scientists, including Professor James Lloyd﹣Smith, who was also a
senior author of the PLoS Pathogens research, recently completed a study that analyzed travel﹣
related screening (筛查) for the novel coronavirus 2019﹣nCoV. The researchers reported that
screening travelers is not very effective for the 2019 coronavirus ﹣ that it will catch less than half
of infected travelers, on average ﹣ and that most infected travelers are undetectable, meaning
that they have no symptoms yet, and are unaware that they have been exposed. So stopping the
spread of the virus is not simply a matter of enhancing screening methods at airports and other
travel centers.
"This puts the onus (责任,负担) on government officials and public health officials to follow
up with travelers after they arrive, to separate them and trace their contacts if they get sick later,
" said Lloyd ﹣ Smith , a UCLA professor of ecology and evolutionary biology . "Many
governments have started to impose quarantines(隔离), or even travel bans, as they realize
that screening is not sufficient to stop the spread of the coronavirus."
One major concern, Lloyd﹣Smith said, is that other countries, especially developing
nations, lack the infrastructure and resources for those measures, and are therefore vulnerable to
importing the disease. "Much of the public health world is very concerned about the virus being
introduced into Africa or India, where large populations exist that do not have access to advanced
medical care," he said.
(1)What is the significance of the scientists' research?
A. It explains the cause of the flu virus.
B. It reduces the risk of people being infected.
C. It analyzes people's ability to fight off the virus.
D. It stops the spread of the flu virus all around the world.
(2)What do we know about the novel coronavirus from paragraph 3?
A. Travelers are at high risk of being exposed to it.
B. It is more difficult to stop its spread than expected.
C. Most travelers infected with it are detected by screening.天添资源网 http://www.ttzyw.com/

trading labour and goods as needed without a hitch. Then the long cooperation fell apart. It began
with a small misunderstanding and then grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into
an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.
One morning, there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's
toolbox. "I'm looking for a few days' work,"he said."Perhaps you have a few jobs here and there
. Could I help you?""Yes,"said John."I do have a job for you. Look across the small creek (
小河,小溪) at that farm. That's my neighbor. In fact, it's my younger brother. Last week
there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer(推土机)there and now there is a creek

see his place anymore."The carpenter said,"I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails
and hole digger and I'll be able to do a job that please you."The older brother had to go to the town

The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing and nailing the bridge. At sunset
when John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. John's eyes opened wide, his jaw
dropped.
