As far back in history as we can tell, people have celebrated the start of a New
Year. The people of ancient Egypt began their New Year in summer. That is when the
Nile River flooded its banks bringing water and fertility(肥沃)to the land. The people
of ancient Babylon and Persia began their New Year on March 21, the first day of
spring . And some native American Indians began their New Year when the nuts of the
oak trees became ripe. That was usually in late summer.
Noise-making is another ancient custom on the New Year. The noise is considered
necessary to drive away the evil spirits of the old year. People around the world do
different things to make a lot of noise. They may hit sticks together, beat on drums,
blow horns, or explode fire-works.
Americans celebrate the New Year in many ways. Most do not have to go to work
or school. So they visit family and friends, attend church services, share a holiday meal,
or watch New Year’s parades(游行) on television. Most years university teams play
in special holiday games. For those who have been busy at work or school, New Year
may be a day of rest. They spend the time thinking about and preparing for the demands
of the New Year.

February has long been a month of romance. With the sweet smell of roses in the
air, romantic films hit cinemas and love stories fill newspapers and magazines.
On the 14th day, it is a custom for a boy to take his girlfriend out to dinner, buy her
flowers and chocolates, write poems, sing to her or even spell out her name with rose
petals! This is what you see on Valentine’s Day, a day named after Valentine who was a
priest in the third century Rome. When the emperor ( 皇 帝 ) decided that single men
could become better soldiers than those with wives, he didn’t allow marriage.
But Valentine continued to perform marriage ceremonies for young lovers in
secret. When his actions were discovered, the emperor sentenced him to death. While in
prison, it is said that Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his prison guard. Before
his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed “From your Valentine”, an expression
that is still in use today. Valentine died for what he believed in and so he was made a
Saint (圣徒), as well as becoming one of history’s most romantic characters.
Nowadays, Valentine’s Day is also popular among Chinese young people. Some
students are planning to make Valentine’s cards for parents, teachers and friends. Others
want to hold parties at which they will exchange small gifts and eat heart-shaped cakes.
The idea is to have fun and encourage people to share in the spirit of St. Valentine.

It seems school children all over the world complain about their school food.
Cherie Blair, the wife of previous Prime Minister Tony Blair, said that she would
prepare a packed lunch for her son if school dinners do not improve. So what do
students of your age eat for lunch at school?
Japan
High schools have canteens(食堂), which serve everything from noodles to rice,
but not burgers and chips. Other children bring food from home such as cold rice balls,
meat or fish, pickles(泡菜) and vegetables.
Students take home a menu for the coming month containing notes on nutrition
(营养)value. Twice a year parents are invited to have a taste of the food. The class
with the fewest leftovers(剩饭) at the end of the month receives a prize.
Untied States
A typical menu from a US school is made up of a hamburger with fried potatoes or
roast chicken, lettuce and pickles, fruit and cookies. School lunches must also provide at
least one-third of the daily dietary allowances (定量) of protein, vitamin A, vitamin C,
iron, calcium, and calories.
Australia
Meat pies, sausage rolls and hotdogs are all traditional dishes in Australian school
shops. But as the nation pays more attention to children’s health, healthier foods have
started to find their way onto school menus.
Many schools have used a traffic light system. The sale of red-labelled foods,
including pastries, chocolate and soft drinks, is served only twice a week. Healthier green-labelled foods such as sushi (寿司), sandwiches, corn and watermelon, however,
are available every day.
In some schools, students have a choice of up to 89 foods to choose from,
including popcorn and rice.
South Africa
Most of South Africa’s schools do not serve meals at all. Classes end at 1:30pm
and students get their own lunches. Many students bring food from home, usually
sandwiches.
Fast food and fried food sell the best among students, which has led to a rise in
obesity among children. But as more people began to realize the fact that being too fat
may cause different diseases, some schools in towns have led the way towards better
nutrition. Now students at these schools are provided with lunches of porridge with
vegetables, such as cabbages, onions, beans, carrots and tomatoes.

As a child, I was always told to “eat my greens”. These were the unappealing
vegetables that sat on the edge of my plate. Peas, and green beans, all looked and tasted
16 . At that time, all I thought was that “when there were so many other delicious treats to 17 , why should I eat boring vegetables?”
Since then my taste buds have 18 and I'm also fully aware of the health
benefits of eating fresh vegetables. But we still need 19 of the amazing goodness
these green super foods give us. In the UK, a campaign has been 20 for several
years to encourage us to eat our “5A Day”—five portions of fruit and vegetables. That's
21 evidence has shown there are significant health 22 to getting at least five
80g portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day.
But I struggle trying to fit these five portions into my daily 23 , partly
because I have a sweet 24 and vegetables are, well, tasteless. Researchers have
been 25 how to make eating vegetables more 26 . They analyzed the
psychology behind our food 27 and found that most of us are 28 by taste.
Brad Turnwald from Stanford University says that “studies show that people 29
to think of healthier options as less tasty for some reason.”
In Europe, a project called Veggie EAT has also been trying to find ways to get
people to 30 more vegetables. Project leader, Professor Heather Hartwell
believes in 31 encouraging people into eating the right things. One idea is to put a
32 of a tasty looking fruit on a supermarket trolley as a 33 about buying
something from the fruit section. She says, “Choice is a really 34 thing. But making
vegetables look attractive will increase their sales.”
Certainly, eating “twisted citrus-glazed carrots” does sound tempting, even if it just
35 like a carrot, but if it makes us eat more vegetables then that can only be a good
thing for our health.
