You’ve probably heard that brick-and-mortar retail (实体零售) is in
trouble. Even industry giants are closing hundreds of stores. Given retail’s
gradual change to mobile and e-commerce ( 电 子 商 务 ), you may be
wondering, “What will retail look like in the future?” Nobody knows. But
here are a few things you can expect to see based on current technology.
Ultrafast delivery is coming. Today, the normal practice is two-day
delivery. But if you’ve been paying attention, you know that’s changing. In
fact, a surprisingly high 25% of consumers said that they would abandon
their orders if one-day delivery wasn’t available. Of course, that’s just the
beginning. Two-hour delivery is coming in the foreseeable future, and
Amazon has already been trying 30-minute delivery.
Your kitchen will resupply itself. You won’t have to worry about
running out of essentials like coffee, pet food or snacks because your
containers will sense stock (库存) levels and replace those items without
you having to lift a finger. No more waking up to find your coffee store is
empty or last-minute trips to the grocery store because you forgot to buy
pet food.
Know exactly what’s in stock and where. Have you ever gone to a store
hoping to buy something, only to learn that they were out of stock? A new
feature from Google Home allows people to ask Google Assistants to find
in-stock products at the closest store. For example: “Google, where can I
find the Nintendo Switch console?” An assistant will tell you how many
stores have it right then and how close they are. Of course, it isn’t currently
available for all stores in all locations, but you can already see a future
when it has become standard.
Convenience, experience, and options—retail will take on a new look.
24. How does the author develop the passage?
A. By asking and answering. B. By clarifying and describing.
C. By analyzing and commenting. D. By comparing and
concluding.
25. What can we know from paragraph 2?
A. Consumers can’t get their orders in one day now.
B. It is possible to deliver goods within two hours in the future.
C. The delivery will be two days in the future.
D. Superfast delivery has widely been used now.
26. According to the passage, what will happen in the future?
A. Retail will disappear gradually.
B. Industrial giants will rule the whole retail trade.
C. Shopping will be more convenient and effective.
D. People will ask Google Assistants to purchase goods.
27. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. How will new technology change the world?
B. How will we run the retail trade in the future?
C. What will retail be like in the future?
D. What benefits will high-tech bring in the future?
C
Scientists have discovered a new material that can hold the key to
unlocking the potential of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
As the world looks towards a gradual move away from
fossil-fuel-powered cars and trucks, greener alternative technologies are
being explored, such as electric-battery-powered vehicles. Another “green”
technology with great potential is hydrogen power. However, the major
obstacles have been the size, complexity, and expense of the fuel
systems—until now.
An international team of researchers, led by Professor David Antonelli
of Lancaster University, has discovered a new material that offers a
solution. The new material would be used to make molecular sieves within
fuel tanks—which can store the hydrogen and work alongside fuel cells in
a hydrogen-powered “system”. It makes the design of tanks far smaller,
cheaper, more convenient and energy-denser than existing hydrogen fuel
technologies, and significantly outperform battery-powered vehicles.
The cost of manufacturing this new material is so low, and the energy
density it can store is so much higher, that the hydrogen fuel cell systems
cost five times less than ordinary batteries as well as providing a much
longer range—potentially enabling journeys up to around four or five times
longer between fill-ups.
The new material makes the cooling system unnecessary. This is crucial
because it means cooling equipment does not need to be used in vehicles,
resulting in systems with the potential to be far more efficient than existing
designs.
Although vehicles, including cars and heavy goods vehicles, are the
most obvious application, this material can also be used in portable devices
such as drones or within mobile chargers so people could go on week-long
camping trips without having to recharge their devices. It could also be
used to run a house or a remote neighborhood off a fuel cell.
28. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A. Fossil fuel will soon run out.
B. It is impossible to conserve fossil fuel.
C. Electric cars will replace gasoline cars.
D. It is not economic to use hydrogen power now.
29. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “outperform”
in
paragraph 3?
A. Lose control of. B. Take the place of.
C. Break away from. D. Perform better than.
30. What do we know about the new material?
A. It’s too complex to make. B. It simplifies the cooling
system.
C. It’s cheaper and more efficient. D. It can be used only for
vehicles.
31. In which section of the Internet can you probably find this text?
A. Style. B. Science. C. Life. D.
Biology.

Communication Skills for Workplace Success
The ability to communicate effectively with superiors, colleagues, and
staff is essential. 32 . These are four communication skills that can help
you impress your boss, teammates, and clients.
1. Listening
33 . No one likes communicating with someone who cares only
about putting in her two cents’ worth and does not take the time to listen to
the other person. If you’re not a good listener, it’s going to be hard to
comprehend what you’re being asked to do.
2. Nonverbal Communication
Your body language, eye contact, hand gestures, and tone of voice all
color the message you are trying to convey. A relaxed, open stance (arms
open, legs relaxed), and a friendly tone will make you appear approachable
and will encourage others to speak openly with you.
34 . You want to look the person in the eye to demonstrate that you
are focused on them and the conversation. (However, be sure not to stare at
the person, which can make him or her uncomfortable.)
3. Clarity and Concision
Good verbal communication means saying just enough—don’t talk too
much or too little. 35 . Say what you want clearly and directly, whether
you’re speaking to someone in person or on the phone.
4. Friendliness
Through a nice tone, a personal question, or simply a smile, you will
encourage your co-workers to engage in open and honest communication
with you. It’s important to be nice and polite in all your workplace
communication. 36 .
A. Try to convey your message in as few words as possible
B. Also, pay attention to other people’s nonverbal signals while you are
talking
C. People will be more open to communicating with you if you focus on
their ideas
D. It will help you get hired, land promotions, and be a success
throughout your career
E. This is important in both face-to-face and written communication
F. Eye contact is also important
G. Being a good listener is one of the best ways to be a good
communicator

Another disappointing day was passing, and he was driving his beat-up
old car home. He was out all day looking for a job. It was getting dark and
light snow was coming down, so he almost didn’t see the old lady standing
on the side of the road. It was clear that she needed help. He pulled up in
front of her obviously brand new and expensive car and got out.
While nobody had stopped to help for the last hour and there was a
smile on his face, she was worried when he approached her. He didn’t look
safe. He looked poor and hungry.
He could see she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He said,
“I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in your car to keep
warm? My name’s Bryan.”
A tire was flat. Bryan fetched tools from his own car to change the tire.
But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening her car’s
nuts, she rolled down the window, said thanks and asked him how much
she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She had
already imagined all the awful things that could have happened without his
help.
Bryan never thought twice about the money. He told her that if she
really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed
help, she could give that person the assistance they needed. He waited until
she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but
he felt good as he headed for home.
Soon the lady saw a small restaurant. She went in to grab a bite to eat
and warm up before she made the last leg of her trip home. The waitress
came over with a sweet smile and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet
hair. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant(怀孕

pregnancy, she still served the lady.

读后续写(满分 25 分)
Paragraph 1:
After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a one-hundred-dollar
bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred-dollar bill,
but the old lady had driven off. She was gone by the time the waitress came
back. The waitress wondered where the lady did so. Then she noticed
something written on a napkin. There were tears in her eyes when she read
what the lady wrote: “You don’t owe me anything. I have been there too.
Somebody once helped me out the way I’m helping you. If you really want
to pay me back, here is what you do: do not let this chain of love end with
you.” Under the napkin were four more hundred-dollar bills.
Paragraph 2:
That night when the waitress got home from work, she was thinking
about the money and what the lady had written. She was wondering how
the lady knew she and her husband were in need. With the baby to be born
next month, life was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband
was, and now everything is going to be all right. Knowing what had
happened, her husband, Bryan, shed tears of joy and gratitude. (共 165 词)
听力原文:
Text 1
W: Living in the city is very convenient.
M: I think so, but I often think of living in the country. It’s peaceful and
quiet.
W: But don’t you think houses in the country can be cold in winter?
M: I don’t think so.
Text 2
M: May I see Professor Kent, please?
W: I’m sorry, he’s been ill since last Friday.
M: When can I expect to see him then?
W: I think he’ll be back for his regular office hours next Thursday, but you
might telephone Tuesday or Wednesday to make sure.
Text 3
W: Is there anything I can do before we go?
M: I can’t think of anything else. I have turned off the electricity and
finished packing our clothes. You had better telephone a taxi while I am
locking the suitcase.
Text 4
W: I had hoped that I could see George here today.
M: He was planning to come, but his wife’s father fell down some stairs
and they had to take him to a doctor.
Text 5
M: Mary, that’s beautiful. How is John?
W: Thank you. He’s fine.
M: You look down. What happened?
W: As a matter of fact, I’m a little worried. I think John will raise the roof
as soon as he sees the bills for this month’s expenses.
Text 6
M: Martha said students can cake examinations online?
W: This is a part of the long-distance education. It’s widely used now, and
it’s convenient. Most of the net schools have their branches nationwide,
which are in charge of arranging the examinations.
M: You mean that long-distance examinations also need examination
rooms and supervisors?
W: Commonly it’s like this, but the questions and answers of the test are
transmitted by the Internet.
M: I see. Thus students can take examinations at any place convenient for
them.
W: Yes, some courses give out the results on the Internet as soon as the
tests are over.
Text 7
M: Good afternoon.
W: Good afternoon.
M: I will soon start my study here for a master’s degree, so I am quite
concerned about what resources and support services are available.
W: Good questions. May I know your major?
M: Bioengineering.
W: I see. The university is well-equipped. Especially the school you are in
owns a Learning Resource Center which provides facilities for personal
study and small group work.
M: Fantastic. When is it open?
W: It opens five days a week, usually 9:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m.
M: You mean students don’t have access to the center at weekends?
W: Well, it may be open at weekends for students if they work on an
important project. However, you need to ask your tutor to book it in
advance.
M: Thanks a lot.
W: Not at all.
Text 8
W: Did you enjoy your visit or not, Jack?
M: I did, not only the dinner but the atmosphere as well. What about yours,
Linda?
W: I did, too. The Tylers like to invite foreign students to visit them, and so
do their friends.
M: The family I visited was quite large: Mr. Selby, his wife, two little boys,
a baby girl, and their grandmother.
W: Should I send both a thank-you note and a gift of some sort?
M: No, not both. A thank-you note is usual, but a gift isn’t.
W: Then I’ll probably either send a note or call them up.
M: Do the Tylers have a house or a flat?
W: A flat, with two bathrooms and a view of the city.
M: I bet you saw the whole flat.
W: On the contrary, I didn’t even see the bedrooms or kitchen. I was afraid
to ask to see them.
M: But in this country people like to show you their homes.
W: Thanks for that information. Next time I’ll be more familiar with these
customs.
Text 9
W: What are you reading, Tom? You look so attentive.
M: I am reading the Entertainment Section of the newspaper. Oh, do you
believe that nearly half of the section is taken up by some stars’ affairs.
I wasted money to buy such rubbish news.
W: In almost every form of media, a great deal of attention is paid to the
personal lives of the stars. It seems that the public cannot get enough of
this kind of news.
M: The practice leads people to pay more attention to these matters than
they otherwise would.
W: The media should respect the privacy of every individual, including
public figures. They may have chosen to be in the public eye, but that
does not give the public the right to know everything about them.
M: Yes, you are right. And many stories about famous stars are untrue.
They are only gossip reported to increase the sales of magazines and
other media.
W: They are unfair to the famous and mislead the public.
M: I believe that the media should pay more attention to matters other than
the private lives of public figures.
W: In this way, they can appeal to a wider audience and encourage people
to develop other interests.
M: I completely agree with you.
Text 10
One day a thirsty fox fell into a well as she was getting a drink of
water. She could not find a way to climb back up. After a short time, a
thirsty goat came to the edge of the well, seeing the fox below him, then he
asked if the water was safe to drink.
Thinking quickly, the fox said the water was pure and delicious and
suggested that the goat come down to have a drink. The goat immediately
jumped into the well. After he had enough to drink, he asked the fox how
he could get back up and out of the well. The fox replied, “I have a plan.
Put your front legs against the wall, and hold your horns up. I will climb up
your back, onto your horns and then I will jump out of the well. Once I’m
out, I’ll help you get out.”
The goat agreed, and the fox quickly got out of the well. The goat
called out to her, “Oh, Ms. Fox, you said you would help me get out of the
well.” The fox called down to the goat, “Friend, if you had half as many
brains as you have hairs on your chin, you would not have jumped into the
well without first thinking about how you would get out.”
