The United States is one of the few countries in the world that has an official day on which
fathers are honored by their children. On the third Sunday in June, fathers all across the United
States are given presents, treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special.
However, the idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane,
Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father’s Day
while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Henry
Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her.
It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a
selfless and loving man. Sonora’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s
Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.
In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge declared the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Roses
are the Father’s Day flowers: red to be worn for a living father and white if the father has died.
When children can’t visit their fathers or take them out to dinner, they send a greeting card.
Traditionally, fathers prefer greeting cards that are not too sentimental. Most greeting cards are too
special so fathers laugh when they open them. Some give heartfelt thanks for being there whenever
the child needed Dad.

When you are trying to recall an email, it’s better to be always polite. Here’s a checklist of
things to consider before you send.
Is the email simple? If not, it could create confusion and waste time. Edit words and sentences
until the message is as tight as you can make it without losing its meaning.
Is it effective? Correspondence, particularly for business, has to be right the first time, as you
may not have another chance to connect with the recipient(接受者).
Is your email necessary? We all spend too much time asking others to do things that are
essentially frivolous. Ask yourself what would happen if you didn’t send the email. If the answer is
“nothing much,” then delete it.
Do you want something done? If your email requires action, make sure you follow it up. And
don’t fall into the trap of forwarding something just to pass the buck. Ask yourself if you are moving
things forward or just moving them off your own desktop.
Dos and Don’ts
Don’t use CAPITAL LETTERS —it’s equal to shouting.
Don’t send emotionally charged messages. If you wouldn’t say it to the recipient’s face, don’t
send it.
Don’t email confidential(机密的) material. It could end up in the wrong hands. Send a letter
instead.
Do be specific in the subject line. Your message could get deleted if it looks like spam(垃圾邮
件).
Do answer at the top, not the bottom, of an email. It’s annoying having to roll down the bottom
to read a response.
Do stick with black font(字体), no larger than 12 points in size. This is the easiest type to read.
61. A frivolous email is usually .
A. not simple B. unnecessary
C. ineffective D. too long
62. If your email is written in capital letters, it may mean .
A. you are angry with the recipient
B. you take the email as important
C. you expect an immediate reply
D. you joke with the recipient
63. If you want to inform someone of something secret, you had better .
A. tell the recipient face to face B. send an email to the recipient
C. write a letter and send it by mail D. store it in your own computer
64. If you don’t fill in the subject line specifically, your email .
A. will be difficult to read
B. will force the recipient to roll down the bottom to read
C. may be sent to other people mistakenly
D. may be removed as junk information
65. The passage mainly tells us .
A. some simple ways to enter an email address
B. some suggestions of writing an email
C. some advice on applying for an email
D. some ways to set a code for your email address
C
In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly,
believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad;
that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they
performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death
affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is
sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude.
In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly
blame competition. Among the most vocal are the youngsters who have suffered under competitive
pressure from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire
to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they
always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try. ” What is
not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean
a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the
true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s
self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being
valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve can we discover a new
meaning in competition.
66. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. Competition helps to set self-respect.
B. Opinions about competition are different among people.
C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition
67. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?
A. It pushes society forward B. It builds up a sense of duty.
B. It improves personal abilities D. It encourages individual efforts
68 The underline phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means ____________.
A. those who try their best to win
B. those who value competition most highly
C. those who are against competition most strongly
D. those who rely on others most for success
69. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a “desire to fail”?
A. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others.
B. One’s success in competition needs great efforts.
C. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills.
D. One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.
70. Which point of view may the author agree to?
A. Every effort should be paid back. B. Competition should be encouraged.
C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter. D. Fear of failure should be removed on
competition.
PART FOUR: WRITING (45 分)
Section A(10 分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the form by using the information for the passage.
Write no more than three words for each answer.
In a society such as the United states or Canada, which has many national, religious, and
cultural differences, people highly value individualism—the differences among people. Teachers
place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems
in these countries show these values. Students do not memorize information. Instead, they work
individually and find answers themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early
age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions.
In most Asian societies, by contrast, the people have the same language, history, and culture.
Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the Orient reflects society’s belief in
group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan, and Korea often
work together and help one another on assignments. In the classroom, the teaching methods are
often very formal. The teacher lectures, and the students listen. There is not much discussion.
Instead, the students recite rules or information that they have memorized.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these systems of education. For example,
one advantage to the system in Japan is that students there learn much more math and science than
American students learn by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more
days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a
society that values discipline and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is
an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they
forget much of the information that they have memorized.
The advantage of the educational system in North American, on the other hand, is that
students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative
ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they haven’t
memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.

Section B(10 分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in
the passage and required words limit.
Four days ago, I toured Warsaw, the capital of Poland. The Nazis, the group that governed
Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, discriminated against different groups of people, and invaded
Warsaw in 1939. They forced the Jewish people in Warsaw to live in one small area of the city
called a ghetto. There was a wall surrounding the ghetto, and the Jews could not leave. There was
very little food and a lot of illness. In 1940, the Nazis started sending thousands of Jews from
Warsaw to large concentrating camps, where they were imprisoned and killed. Later, in 1943, the
Jews remaining in the Warsaw Ghetto decided to fight back. During the battle, many Jews were
killed, and the buildings in the Warsaw Ghetto were burnt to the ground. Now there is a memorial
there to the people who fought against the Nazis. As I looked at it, I thought about how terrible life
was for the Jews then and how brave they were to fight the Nazis.
After Warsaw, I visited Treblinka, one of the Nazi concentrating camps. As a memorial, there
are stones representing Jewish towns and villages whose entire populations were killed during the
war. There were so many stones! I could hardly speak after my visit to Treblinka.
81. What’s the passage mainly about? (no more than seven words)
82. What words would you use to describe the life in the Jewish Ghettos?(at least two words)
83. What did the Nazis do in Poland? (no more than twelve words)
84. What is the writer’s reaction to what he sees in Treblinka? (no more than twelve words)

Dear classmates,
Chongyang, the traditional Chinese festival for the elderly, is coming around. We are planning to
visit the Nursing Home to celebrate the special day. I would like all of you to join us. Here’s our
plan.
We have planned several activities. When we get there, we will visit the elderly in their rooms in
groups, presenting them with flowers and self –made cards to show our respect and love. Then we’ll
do some cleaning and washing for them with the help of the nurse.
As some old people feel lonely, we may chat with them about their old days, changes of our city,
or anything they are interested in. We may also give them some performances: singing, dancing, and
so on.
I’ m sure we’ll gain a better understanding of the elderly. Welcome you all to join us.
Yours,
