Dreaming of summer picnics filled with family and fun? We’ve come up with 4 of
the top picnic areas across the US.
Cumberland Islands, Georgia
Just a few hours south of Savannah, this national seashore is a picnic paradise. It’s
an unspoiled place in the Deep South with over 50 miles of hiking trails (小径).
Covered in Spanish moss, the trails are lined with trees and since it’s still a rural area,
the stars line up for a spectacular show at night and create the perfect evening starlit
picnic opportunity.
Grant Park, Chicago
If you are looking for delicious food in Chicago, go for a taste of a 20-day,
lake-front, foodie festival that happens in October each year. Grab a spot near the
fountain to enjoy your picnic, appreciate the city scenery and lake views and relax with
family and friends. If you are there on July 4th, be sure to plan the day to include the
fireworks display at the Navy Pier.
Cranberry Islands, Maine
Here, you’ll enjoy natural picnics with island views. The islands are a delightful
group of islands about 20 minutes offshore from Acadia National Park. You can visit
the islands by private boat or ferry (渡船) service. Bring a picnic basket along for the
ride as it’s a romantic picnic area to take your special someone or go for a family outing
to visit the islands.
Big Sur, California
The Point Lobos State Reserve is a small gem. Besides the coastal wildlife there are
rare plant communities, and unique geological formations. It’s good to have a picnic
there. We recommend bringing a telescope, because much of the wildlife can be seen
only at a distance.

When Randy Heiss went hiking behind his Patagonia, Ariz. farm, the last thing
he expected to find was a Christmas list from a little girl across the US-Mexico border.
“I found this balloon on my morning walk near Patagonia on Sunday. Attached to it was
a piece of paper with the Christmas wishes from a little girl,” Heiss wrote on his
Facebook page.
When he brought the list home to his wife, who speaks fluent Spanish, they
determined that the little girl had asked for Enchantimals toys, clothes, art supplies and
various other gifts. That's when Heiss set out to make the little girl's Christmas dreams
come true. Heiss said he had attempted to send Christmas letters to Santa Claus via
balloon when he was a kid but never received a response.
Heiss sent a Facebook message on Wednesday to XENY, a radio station in
Nogales, to see if it could help him track down the girl or her family. He later received a
response from the station, which had determined the author of the letter was an
8-year-old girl named Dayami, and the station wanted to set up a meeting between the
two on Thursday. “It just changed my entire day,” Heiss told the Washington Post.
“Instead of going back to my office in Bisbee, I went with my wife to Walmart. “
The couple bought almost everything on Dayami's list. They also brought a few
gifts for Dayami's little sister, Ximena. They told the children they were “ ayudantes de
Santa,” or Santa's helpers.
Heiss,60, said the experience was very healing for him and his wife. Nine years
ago,the couple's only son died. “ Being around children at Christmas time has been
absent in our lives,” Heiss said. We now have friends for life. For a day, that border
fence with its concertina wire melted away.
28.How did Dayami send out her Christmas wishes?
A. By calling Heiss. B. By attaching them to a balloon.
C. By writing to a radio station. D. By sending a Facebook message.
29.When did Heiss know what the girl exactly wanted?
A. After the help of his wife.
B. When he found the balloon.
C. After their meeting in America.
D. When he got a response from the radio station.
30.What might make Heiss decide to fulfill the little girl's Christmas wishes?
A. His son's will.
B. The girls request for help.
C. His similar unsuccessful experience.
D. His desire to make friends with the girl.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The couple got out of the pain completely.
B. The experience was a great relief to the couple.
C. The couple would help more children from Mexico.
D. There will be no border between countries one day.
D
A dove rested on a telephone wire. Ready for takeoff, it raises its wings,
springs into the air and flaps away. This series of actions is so common that you
probably do not pay it much attention. But University of Manchester bioinechanical
engineer Ben Parslew does. He is trying to design robots that can jump like birds.
Most conventional robots roll around on wheels, limiting mobility. There is a need
for more agile robots that "can jump over obstacles in messy environments," Parslew
says. To design such a machine, he turned to nature: "Birds are really good jumpers," he
notes.
The trouble is, when birds start to take off, they lean so far forward that they should
tip over and fall onto their beaks(喙). Yet that does not happen. Parslew and his team
used computer modeling to discover how birds avoid this fate. They discovered that
birds twist their bodies slightly towards the back while accelerating into a jump. They
also have flexible legs and toe joints, which prevent them from taking off briefly and
immediately crashing into the ground. The result were published last October in Royal
Society Open Science.
Parslew thinks engineers can use this information to design robots that can not only
jump well but also launch into flight more. efficiently. University of Southern
California biomechanist Michael Habib, who was not involved in the study, says
springs and levers(杠杆)enable more rapid acceleration-than wheels do. And many
animals are masters of springs and levers.
“If you can understand how that works,”Habib adds, “you can build a robot that's
good at running around and good at flying, and it will also be good at taking off
suddenly in all kinds of conditions and landing on a dime.”Parslew is now designing
such a robot, as an alternative to wheeled rovers for exploring other planets.
32.What is right about the dove mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. It takes off very beautifully. B. It catches everyone's attention.
C. It gives Ben Parslew inspiration. D. It raises Ben Parslew’s curiosity.
33.What can we-infer about the traditional robots?
A. They can't jump over barriers. B. They can only move in one direction.
C. They can't detect barriers before them. D. They can't adapt to complex
environments.
34.How does a bird avoid falling when taking off?
A. By getting rid of gravity. B. By flapping its wings hard.
C. By spinning its body backward. D. By jumping into the air quickly.
35.What is the main idea of the text?
A. Birds provide inspiration. for humans.
B. New robots that can jump have been created.
C. The development of robots benefits space explore
D. Studying birds' jumping helps scientist build better robots.

第二节 书面表达(满分 25 分)
Dear Tom,
Knowing that your application to be our foreign teacher has been approved, I am
writing to express sincere congratulations to you. I am really delighted that you will
come to China this July.
Since it is your first visit to China, I’d like to offer some suggestions. To begin
with, the local diet is quite different from yours, which may take a little time to adapt to
physically and mentally. What’s more, students here are friendly but shy, reluctant to
communicate with strangers. Therefore it would be a good idea if you could begin with
something easy and interesting to build up their confidence. In addition, don’t forget to
learn about local customs and manners in advance, which will definitely help you fit in
with new surroundings.
I hope that my suggestions can be of some benefit to you. Looking forward to
meeting you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
