Theaters of the Past
The Greek Theater
Theaters developed in many parts of Greece. Ancient Greek theaters were built in natural open air sites on
conveniently shaped hills. This allowed a great mass of people to enjoy a show at a time. Due to this, actors placed
emphasis on exaggerated(夸张的) action and speech. And, colorful symbolic masks and costumes were used.
The Medieval Theater
The Medieval theater started in churches. That’s why medieval plays were about Bible stories. At first, it became a
custom for priests ( 牧 师 ) to act out brief scenes during Christmas and Easter. These acts attracted large crowds.
Finally the church refused to allow priests to participate in any such events again, so ordinary people began these
performances outside. Performances were set in the town square, with several stage settings around it.
The Elizabethan Theater
The England’s theater developed rapidly in the years following the defeat of the Spanish Navy. The dominant feature
of Elizabethan theater was the stage, It has three parts : The fore stage for outside scenes ; the inner stage for scenes
inside a building; an upper stage or balcony for various purposes. The reason for this design is that there were no
scene changes, or breaks during the play. Very little scenery was used, so the actors had to create a scene through
their voices and dialogues. This led to a more poetic script, and poets became the main source of script writing.
The Restoration Theater
Some of the plays told sad stories, but the majority of the plays were really funny. Many specialized machines were

A new family moved in next door and I got to meet the mother of the family, Lydia. Lydia is Korean, and her
family moved to our city so her husband could go to graduate school. We started talking, and she was apologetic
about how bad her English was, but I didn’t care. I knew how hard it was to learn a second language. I enjoyed
chatting with Lydia as we watched our kids play.
It was what came next that challenged me: Lydia asked if I’d be willing to help her with her English. Now, I am
not a teacher. I admire teachers, and I’m grateful for teachers, and it’s because I admire what they do so much that I
was very very sure that I couldn’t do it myself.
But Lydia was sure that she wanted my help. I was doubtful. I wasn’t sure my “help” was even worth being
called by that name. But because she asked me, I said “yes. ” And that was the beginning of a friendship. Lydia and I
spent afternoons sitting together and reading the newspaper, and as we did, she asked me questions when she had
them—questions about language, yes, but also questions about the new culture she found herself in. In turn, I asked
my own questions, growing curious about her home country and culture. We bonded over our shared faith and our
struggles as mothers of kids with special needs. When I complimented( 恭 维 ) her cooking, she began to teach me
about Korean food, eventually leading to a shared trip to explore the Korean grocery stores in our city. Because of
Lydia, I learned more about my own hometown than I ever could have learned by myself. I’m still not sure that I’m
any good as a teacher. But I’m grateful I said “yes” when my neighbor asked me to help her with her English. That
meant spending extra time with my neighbor, and that extra time meant she didn’t remain just my neighbor. She
became my friend.
4. What was Lydia sorry about?
A. Her bad English.
B. Her carelessness.
C. Nobody teaching her English.
D. Her poor life in a new place.
5. What can be concluded from the third paragraph?
A. The author admired teachers.
B. The author wanted to be a teacher.
C. The author didn’t want to help Lydia.
D. The author was not confident in helping Lydia.
6. Why was the author grateful at the last paragraph?
A. She managed to learn English well.
B. She made friends with her neighbor.
C. She learned how to cook Korean food.
D. She realized her dream of being a teacher.
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. No pains, no gains.
B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C. To help others is to help ourselves.
D. Where there is a will, there is a way.C
WeChat is a social mobile application with voice and text messaging timeline and several social features like
“Message in a Bottle”. WeChat, a popular instant messaging tool run by Tencent Holdings, aims to help users access
mobile services without downloading separate apps, which experts said may challenge the business of smartphone
app distributors such Apple Store.
This new feature, named “Mini Programs”, allows WeChat users to find a variety of services such as ticket
buying by scanning a QR (quick-response) code, saving them the trouble of installing a number of different apps on
smart devices, according to the transcript of a speech by Zhang Xiaolong, Tencent’s senior executive vice president,
on Wednesday. The new function is expected to come online on January 9.
Zhang, known as the father of WeChat, emphasized that “Mini Programs” is not a mobile app distributing
function.
Still, experts and app developers said that the rollout ( 推出) of “Mini Programs” on WeChat will erode the
market share of app distributors like Apple Store in China.
“‘Mini Programs’ will attract lots of start-ups, because a program based on WeChat can help them build up
businesses at much lower costs, ” a Shanghai-based app developer, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
If a start-up wants to promote its business via a separate application, it has to hire a special team to develop two
different apps—one each for IOS and Android.
Launched in 2011, WeChat has evolved to include services such as “Order Taxi”, “Food Delivery”, e-commerce
and payments from just an instant messaging app.
8. What can we know about “Mini Programs”?

A. Increase. B. Reduce.
C. Improve. D. Promote.

In my memory, winters always used to be really unpleasant. You had to bundle up just to keep warm when you
went outside. You were often cold, wet, slip on the ice, and you’d arrive home to an ice-cold house. And that would
mean turning on the heating and waiting. It’s a miracle you didn’t get cold to the bone.
Fortunately, things don’t have to be so challenging any more. Technology, engineering and design have
advanced giving us new solutions to old problems. It means dealing with winter needn’t be like skating on thin ice.
With a smart thermostat ( 温度自动调节器), our homes can be warm when we need them to be. Many models
feature smartphone apps that allow you to control temperature remotely, so we can warm up the house before we
arrive home. According to techradar. com, Tado’s model features voice control, while the Nest ‘leans’ your habits
and automatically heats the home for you.
Clothes have been given an upgrade, too. Electronic thermal jackets, sweaters and coats heat up when you turnthem on. What is the better way to keep warm in the dead of winter? At the touch of a button, or through an app on
our phones, the clothing generates heat from elements placed inside. Many models offer three levels of heating
which stay warm for over 12 hours.
Finally, there is the clothing for the head, Beanies and Earmuffs, that feature speakers included in the fabric
using Bluetooth technology so we can listen to our favourite music or, in some cases, have a phone call using the in-
built microphone. All while keeping the head warm and avoiding a cold.
For many, the thought of winter used to be enough to make their blood run cold. But using technology, life
needn’t freeze up. With the right solutions, there’s no reason why winter can’t be really, really cool.
12. What do the underlined words “bundle up” mean in Para. 1?
A. Fix an air conditioner. B. Take a hot bath.
C. Run a lot. D. Put on more clothes.
13. How does electronic thermal clothing work?
A. The equipment placed inside the clothing produces heat.
B. It needs to be warmed up before being used.
C. The thermostat heats up automatically when the temperature is low.
D. It keeps warm for over 12 hours after being charged for an hour.
14. From the passage, we can learn the following statements EXCEPT that .
A. Tado’s model can be controlled by saying something to it
B. with the in-built speaker and microphone, Beanies and Earmuffs users can have a phone call
C. technology can do nothing to make winter less rough
D. Bluetooth technology is used in the clothing for the head
15. What’s the best title of this passage?
A. A Smart Thermostat
B. A Modern Winter
C. Ways of Keeping Warm
D. An Unpleasant Winter

A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile from his brother as a Christmas present.
On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a little boy was walking around the shiny
new car, admiring it. "Is this your car, Mister?" he asked.
Paul nodded. "My brother gave it to me for Christmas." "The boy was astounded. "You mean
your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you anything? Boy, I wish..." He hesitated.
Of course, Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like
that. But what the lad said jarred Paul all the way down to his heels.
"I wish," the boy went on, "that I could be a brother like that” Paul looked at the boy in
astonishment, then impulsively he added, "Would you like to take a ride in my automobile?"
"Oh yes, I'd love that."
After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes aglow, said, "Mister, would you mind driving in
front of my house?"
Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that
he could ride home in a big automobile. But Paul was wrong again. "Will you stop where those two
steps are?" the boy asked.

He ran up the steps. Paragraph 2:

Dear Tom,
How are you doing? I made some Chinese knots. I’m writing to seek your assistance, hoping
that you can spare some time to sell them on your online shop.
I made them with silk threads, cloth and other materials. And they look really beautiful in the
shape of a diamond, about 5 inches long and 4 inches wide. In China, these knots stand for
friendship, love and good luck. Not only can people give them as gifts to friends but also can hang
them in their cars or houses. They are only 4.99 US dollars each.
If anyone wants to know more about the knots, let them write to me. Also, do let me know if
you need further information. Thanks for your consideration
