While bringing global change may take some time, these companies and
individuals have already developed various ways to reduce plastic
pollution.Plastic Bank
According to its founder David Katz. “The only way to stop ocean plastic

Being highly successful in any field is pretty rare. It take
s a combination of natural talent, luck, determination, and p
lenty of outside support for someone to make it big in spor
ts, entertainment, or business. But what if competing is all
that matters to you, whether you are likely to succeed or
not? This was the goal of Michael Eddie the Eagle Edwards,
and that he reached that goal was an amazing achievement.
Born in the U.K. in 1963, Michael was an enthusiastic downhi
ll skier whose dream was to compete for Britain in world-cla
ss competitions. He would have liked to represent his country
in the 1984 Winter Olympics, but there were a large number
of downhill competitors, and Edwards didn't qualify. Seeing
his chance elsewhere, he switched to ski jumping. Ski jumping
didn't cost nearly as much, and there was almost no compet
ition for a place on the Britain team.
But a number of hurdles ( 障 碍 )
could have meant the end of Edwards' dream. He weighed more
than most competitors, which put him at a disadvantage. He
had no financial
support for hi, training. Poor eyesight meant that he had to
wear glasses under his goggles ( 护 目 镜 )
- not a good thing when they steamed up at high altitudes.
But he couldn't let any of this discourage him. He saw hi
mself as a true lover of the sport who simply wanted the c
hance to compete. Winning wasn't the point. Having the opport
unity to try was all he cared about. And nothing could stop
him from trying.
In the end, Edwards took 55th place in the 1987 World Champ
ionships. He then went on to the Calgary Olympics in 1988,
where he finished last in both of his events. Many athletes
would have been embarrassed by this result, but he is prou
d of his achievement to this day. His determination to fight
against all the odds made him a global hero, and in 2016,
the inspiring film Eddie the Eagle was made about his life
.

B. was embarrassed by his results
C. switched to film making
D. was glad it was over
31. What made Michael Edwards outstanding?

B. His enthusiasm for the sport.
C. His attitude towards the Olympics.

A woman grasped her phone to her heart the way a minister
might hold a Bible. She was anxious to take a picture of a
bunch of flowers that sat not 10 feet away, but first she
had to get through a crowd of others pushing to do the s
ame. The cause of this was Bouquets to Art, one of the mos
t popular annual events at the de Young Museum in San Franc
isco. For the 34th year, artists were asked to create flower
bunches that respond to pieces of art on display, from anc
ient carvings to contemporary sculptures. It ’
s time to take a photo to post on Instagram, but to the p
oint that it has become a problem.
In recent years» the de Young received more than a thousand
complaints from people who felt that cell phones had ruined
their experience. In fact, institutions of fine art around
the world face similar problems as the desire to take photog
raphs becomes a huge draw for museums as well as something
that upsets some of their visitors. So the de Young responde
d with a kind of compromise: carving out “ photo free ”
hours during the exhibition’s six-day run.
One common complaint in the ongoing debates over the effect
of social media on museum culture is that people seem to be
missing out on experiences because they are so busy collect
ing evidence of them. A recent study in the journal Psycholo
gical Science suggests there is some truth to this; it found
that people who took photos of an exhibit rather than simply observing it had a harder time remembering
what they saw. But the issue is complicated for the professi
onals running museums. Linda Butler, the de Young ’
s head of marketing, communications and visitor experience, ac
knowledges that not everyone wants a museum to be
“ a photo-taking playland. ”
Yet a lot of other people do, and she thinks that the de
Young is in no position to judge that one motivation for
buying a $ 28 ticket is more valid than another.
“ If we removed social media and photography, ” she says,
“ we would risk becoming less popular. ”
If this is a battle, signs indicate that the pro-phone cro
wd (亲手机人群) has already won.
32. What were the crowd eager to do in Paragraph 1?
A. To hold a Bible.B. To admire flowers.
C. To take a photo.D. To see the exhibition.
33.How did the de Young respond to the complaints?
A. By setting periods without photo-taking.
B. By making the exhibition free of charge.
C. By compromising with other institutions.
D. By giving extra time to take photos freely.
34.What can we infer about the use of social media in museu
ms according to the recent study?
A. It uncovers the truth.B. It accumulates evidence.
C. It causes complaints.D. It plays a negative role.
35.Which of the following may Linda Butler support?
A. Catering to visitors.B. Reducing admission prices.
C.Reserving judgement in public.
D. Banning social media and photography.
