Part-time jobs for 15 and 16 years olds
Waiter / Waitress
A job as a waiter or waitress is a good choice for 16-year-olds. Not only can one
earn $9-$12 an hour, but they can also get the tips (小费). Most people that visit a
restaurant don’t just have good food. They come here to relax and have a good
time. Besides serving food quickly, a young waiter who talks to them politely with
a smile on his face will make the diners enjoy their time at the restaurant.
Work in a library
If one is fond of books, working in a library is another suitable choice. Besides, the
pay is good, it offers a lot of free time when students can actually sit down and
finish their homework. So on returning home, they would have time to hang
around with friends or just relax. So working in a library is an excellent part-time
job for teens, especially for school students.
Internet jobs
There are many ways of making money through online jobs like clicking on
advertisements, visiting sites and signing up with them. However, such online jobs
don’t pay well. A better Internet job for teens is to complete online surveys. These
are quite simple surveys that usually ask one about his/ her opinions and ideas.
Many companies use these ideas to make products designed for teenagers.

That warm day was the only day of the week without rain. I opened the door, took
a seat and began to enjoy the wonderful sunshine. Suddenly, I noticed that the house
near mine had been sold. An elderly lady was in front of the door, with some beautiful
flowers beside her. I walked to her. She looked to be in her early eighties and had the
prettiest white hair.
“Hi! My name is Karmen,” I said smiling brightly at the old lady. She smiled back
and said, “Hello, Karmen. I’m Kitty.” Her voice was very strong for someone at her
age. Later, I learned that she was alone and had no family or relatives to help her. From
that day on, I often visited her and helped her with her housework and sometimes she
gave me some delicious food. A year passed, and I considered her to be one of my best
friends.
One day, I walked over for my morning visit and knocked on the door, but there
was no answer. I knocked again, and she still didn’t turn up. So I let myself in, using the
key she had given me. I checked her living room and then her kitchen. I finally went
into her bedroom, and she was lying peacefully on her bed. Beside her there were two
notes. One was her will(遗嘱), which said all that she had would be given to me. The
other was a thank-you note. I went to her bedside and cried sadly.
Though several years has gone by, I still miss her deeply. Whenever I look at the
beautiful flowers in front of her house, I remember the wonderful friendship we had.

Smoking is harmful. But as soon as you quit the habit, everything will be OK,
right? Wrong.
New research has found that even if you give up smoking, the damage it has done
to your genes will stay there for a much longer time. In the research, a team of US
scientists studied the blood of 16,000 people. Among them, some were smokers, some
used to smoke, and the rest were non-smokers. Scientists compared their genes and
found that more than 7,000 genes of smokers had changed-a number that is one-third
of known human genes.
According to NBC News, both heart disease and cancer are caused by genetic
changes. Some people may have had the changes when they were born, but most people
get them in their day-to-day lives while doing things like smoking.
When you stop smoking, a lot of these genes will return to normal within five
years.
This means your body is trying to heal ( 治 愈 ) itself of the harmful effects of
smoking. But the changes in some of the genes stay for longer. They can stay for as
long as 30 years, It’s almost like leaving a footprint on wet cement ( 水 泥 ) -it will
always be there, even when you’ve walked away and when the cement becomes dry.
Although the study results may make people unhappy, there is a bright side: the
findings could help scientists invent medicine to treat genetic damage caused by
smoking or find ways to tell which people have heart disease or cancer risks.
58. The function of Paragraph 1 is to______ .
A. introduce the topic of the passage B. give an example
C. make an argument D. show the main idea of the passage
59. Most genetic changes happen because of______ .
A. people’s condition at birth B. environmental pollution
C. heart disease and cancer D. people’s bad living habit
60. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refers to______ .
A. the footprint B. the cement
C. the harmful effect D. the genetic change
61. Which of the following statements is true?
A. The findings are the fruit of more than three years’ research.
B. The findings have prevented more people from starting smoking
C. The findings offer evidence that a damaged gene can heal itself.
D. The findings help to find cures for genetic damage caused by smoking.
D
Have you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Perhaps they were
busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what was going
on around them. As the number of this new “species” of human has kept rising, they
have been given a new name — phubbers(低头族).
Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts
put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various
social identities( 身 份 )bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell
phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie in front of a car accident
site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone.
A chain of similar events eventually leads to the destruction of the world.
Although the ending sounds overstated, the damage phubbing can bring is real.
Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. “Constantly bending your head
to check your cell phone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted doctors as
saying. “the neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching.” Also, staring at
cell phones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to
the report.
But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive
you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many
people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each
other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.
It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell
to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad
daylight.
62. Why does the author give the example of a cartoon in Paragragh2?
A. To advertise the cartoon made by students.
B. To inform people of the bad effects of phubbing.
C. To indicate the world will finally be destroyed by phubbers.
D. To warn doctors against using cell phones while treating patients.
63. Which of the following is NOT a risk a phubber may have?
A. His social skills could be affected.
B. He will cause the destruction of the world.
C. His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed.
D. He might get separated from his friends and family.
64. Which of the following may be the author’s attitude towards phubbing?
A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Optimistic. D. Objective.
65. What may the passage talk about next?
A. Advice on how to use a cell phone.
B. People addicted to phubbing.
C. Measures to reduce the risks of phubbing.
D. Consequences of phubbing.

decorations. Be sure that your articles are not confusingly worded. 68 Make sure

Be Conversational
69 Be conversational so that readers can grasp what you mean in your article.
With quality content, engage your readers so that your article will have that personal
and human touch.

How to keep healthy?
Dear boys and girls,
Good health is essential to everyone, without which one can hardly live a satisfactory life. As
students, when longing to learn better, we shall in the meanwhile act actively for good health.
Here are some of my suggestions. First, we’d better do more exercise such as playing
basketball, running or swimming to build up our body. Second, we should have a balanced diet.
Don’t eat too much meat or sugar but more vegetables and fruit. Third, we need enough sleep and
rest, and we shouldn’t stay up late because it is bad for our health. Besides, keeping ourselves happy
is also very important. I hope we are healthy and enjoy our life.
Thank you!
