(NEW YORK) A French tourist highly praised for rescuing a two-year-old girl in Manhattan said he
didn’t think twice before diving into the freezing East River.
Tuesday’s Daily News said 29-year-old Julien Duret from France was the man who left the spot
quickly after the rescue last Saturday.
He lifted the little girl out of the water after she fell off the bank at the South Street Seaport museum.
He handed the girl to her father, David Anderson, who had dived in after him.
“I didn’t think at all,” Duret told the Daily News. “It happened very fast. I reacted very fast.”
Duret, an engineer on vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the pier (码头) when he saw
something falling into the water. He thought it was a doll, but realized it was a child when he approached
the river. Immediately, he took off his coat and jumped into the water.
When he reached the girl, she appeared lifeless, he said. Fortunately, when she was out of the water,
she opened her eyes.
Anderson said his daughter slipped off the bank when he was adjusting his camera. An ambulance
came later for her, said Duret, who was handed dry clothes from onlookers. Duret caught a taxi with his
girlfriend shortly after.
The rescue happened on the day before he left for France. Duret said he didn’t realize his story of
heroism had greatly moved New York until he was leaving the city the next morning.
“I don’t really think I’m a hero,” said Duret. “Anyone would do the same thing.”

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great
importance to African ecosystem (生态系统). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to
a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the
forest-and- savanna (大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of
existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat (栖息地).
It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the
environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300
pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls
branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests
and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are
numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches
overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By
pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants
to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large
hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered
species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear
from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole
ecosystem.
28. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The effect of African elephants’ search for food.高二英语第 6 页(共 10 页)

A. They result from the destruction of rain forests.
B. They provide food mainly for African elephants.
C. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of
D. They are home to many endangered animals. different kinds.
31. The passage is developed mainly by .
A. showing the effect and then explaining the causes
B. pointing out similarities and differences
C. describing the changes in space order
D. giving examples

Why do people lie? Many psychologists agree that lying can start from childhood. There are various
reasons why children make false statements. They usually tell untruthful stories to cover up the mistakes
that they have done in the past. Lying is also a way to avoid receiving punishments from parents. If parents
fail to reprimand their children for making up false stories, then there is a possibility that they will continue
to lie during their teenage years.
Teenagers lie because they want to be accepted by their friends. This is the main reason why they
create stories that are not true just to become presentable and acceptable to other people. In some instances,
teenagers tell untruthful statements to avoid criticisms from their families and friends.
As teenagers grow, lying becomes one of their habits. Their knowledge on making up untruthful
stories becomes more developed. People lie in workplaces if they fail to meet the deadlines and if they fail
to accomplish and do their tasks efficiently. Some of the common lies made in workplaces are getting sick
and having emergencies at home. The danger involved in frequent lying is when it becomes a character. 高二英语第 7 页(共 10 页)
Frequent lying causes the development of the condition known to doctors as pathological (病态的) lying.
Pathological lying is a mental health condition, which is associated with individuals who have the urge
to tell untruthful statements. Patients suffering from it make up stories about everything and anything.
These individuals pretend to meet the standards of other people who they want to please. These patients
cheat other people because it gives them an unexplained pleasure. One of the best ways of treating
pathological liars is to help them tell true statements and stories at all times. This may be hard for them, but
as they are accustomed to it, they will start to realize that they will be more accepted by their families and
other people if they stop themselves from making up false stories.
32. The underlined word “reprimand” in Paragraph 1 means “________”.
A. criticize B. satisfy C. discourage D. praise
33. Teenagers tell lies mainly because they want to ________.
A. avoid being punished B. fool other people
C. satisfy others D. attract others’ attention
34. What are patients suffering pathological lying most likely to do?
A. They really want to play jokes on others.
B. They often suffer from some other diseases.
C. They usually want to show off themselves by making some statements.
D. They always like making up pleasing stories.
35. How does the writer explain pathological lying?
A. By showing some typical examples.
B. By predicting the future consequences.
C. By analyzing its causes and development.
D. By listing a group of phenomena.

Every day, in hundreds of ordinary situations, actions speak far louder than words. We talk with our
mouth, but we communicate with our facial expressions, our tone of voice and our whole body.
36 When we can read what others are saying without being aware, we can deal with things – at
work and at home before they become problems.
By understanding how to use body language, you can communicate more effectively. Here is
how:
▲ 37 Throughout the day, notice details about the way you speak, gesture and move. When
standing, keep your shoulders straight, your body open and your weight balanced on both feet.
▲Work on your handshake. 38 The handshake most likely to show confidence is firm and dry,
with strong but not too much pressure.
▲Use eye contact. Eye contact is very important in forming an impression of someone. You should
have the ability to keep direct eye contact if you want to be taken seriously. But some people feel 高二英语第 8 页(共 10 页)
uncomfortable when it is too strong. 39
▲Be yourself. Nonverbal messages come from deep inside you, from your own sense of self-respect.
If you are comfortable with yourself, it shows. 40 They always give others a deep impression.
A. Pay attention to your body-talk.
B. People who know who they are have a relaxed way of talking and moving.

.One possible version:
Nowadays, because of mobile phone’s attractive functions, more and more students are becoming
Phubbers. They can’t stop surfing the Internet, taking photos and even playing mobile games by using it
everywhere.
However, phubbing disturbs not only our study but also our life. On the one hand, phubbers waste lots
of time playing cell phone games and sending messages, particularly in class. Other people also complain
they are disturbed when phones ring in classrooms. On the other hand, it can lead to health problems. For
instance, using a mobile phone on the sofa can cause back and neck pain.
As far as I am concerned, it is high time that we threw away the phone and raised our heads up. Do
cherish everything around us and appreciate the scenery ahead of us. What’s more, we should do more
exercises and take part in real-life activities. In a word, only when we use the phone reasonably can we
realize the happiness of life.

A: Alright, Sara, we know that you are planning something big for John’s birthday. Could you tell us just
what you have in your mind?
B: I want to make his birthday a very special event. John has a sister living in France. And I’ll send her a
plane ticket, so that she can be here for his birthday.
A: Boy! What an excellent plan! That’s something special. I can’t have guessed you had some secret plan 高二英语第 14 页(共 10 页)

A: Hey, Peter, I’m sorry!
B: Hi, Diana, what’s wrong?
A: We were going to Hong Kong this weekend, but I’m afraid I can’t go.
B: How come?
A: I have a really big geography test and I have to study for it.
B: We can go next week instead.
A: No, I don’t want to ruin your weekend. You go ahead and please take the book I bought to my friend
Sally. Tell her I have to study all weekend, because I can’t afford to fail the test.

A: ( Ring ) Hello, this is Andrea.
B: Hello, Andrea, this is Alex. I have some very good news for you. Miranda was very satisfied with you
and said she’s very much looking forward to working with you. Isn’t that wonderful? Congratulations dear!
How does it feel to be Miranda’s new assistant? How I imagine that you’re just delighted with this news.
So let’s see, you can start on Monday, right?
A: Umm, well, I don’t think I can start on Monday. I am visiting my father in Baltimore. And because I
don’t live in New York, I’ll need a couple of days to find a flat and buy some furniture and move my things
from Avon.
B: Oh, well then, in that case I suppose Wednesday will be good.
A: Ok, see you then!

A: Hello, Mr. Jan Erick Freedman. You’re a frequent traveler. And we also know that you eat out twice a
day. How come you are so fond of eating out?
B: When I got my first job back in 1982 and started travelling, I had no other choice but to eat out. I found
that I felt different due to what I was eating, so I tried to find places that served food that made me feel
good. The secret was the quality of the food and how well the food was prepared. I made an effort to find
good restaurants as well as nice dishes.
A: How did you manage to make a list of 218 favorite restaurants?
B: I’ve lived in many cities and when I moved back to Sweden from the United States, people asked me
where to go to eat when they went to cities I knew. I got a lot of ideas. Then I wrote about restaurants for
the Swedish club’s magazine and someone suggested I gather the information about the restaurants together
since I had all the facts about the restaurants I’ve been to. I started to do that.
A: How do you find restaurants?
B: The best way is to ask the people there. I may talk to people at the street market or take a walk and look
for a place for myself. I never asked a hotel clerk or a taxi driver. I don’t go to empty restaurants or places
with menus difficult to understand.

At the beginning of the tour, we will start with the most important place in my town which is the Plaza
Leon. The Plaza Leon, which is more than 100 years old, is the gathering place for young people on Friday
and Saturday nights, and for parents and children on Sunday afternoons. Four streets lead to the Plaza
which have white sidewalks and are tree-lined. Hernandes Street, which was named after a famous writer
born in the city, contains all of the food stores, fish markets and vegetable stands. Fernando Street, which
was named after an educator, is where all of the government offices are housed. Via del Mar Street, whose
roads are made of stones, is the only street which still has its old surface. Finally we come to the Horatio
Street, on which there are two universities. One of them is the most famous university in my country.
That’s why it is my favorite street of all.
