St Martins vs Doonsberg and Northerners vs Tigers . B I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn't want me for the film—it wanted somebody as well-known as Paul—he stood for me. I don't know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers. The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft (技艺) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues(美德) that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other—but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core (核心) of our relationship off the screen. We shared the belief that if you're fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back—he with his Newman's Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn't see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events. I last saw him a few months ago. He'd been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn't talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn't need a lot of words. 24. Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to the author at first? A. Paul Newman wanted it. B. The studio powers didn't like his agent. C. He wasn't famous enough. D. The director recommended someone else. 25. Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship? A. They were of the same age. B. They worked in the same theater. C. They were both good actors. D. They had similar characteristics. 26. What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Their belief. B. Their care for children. C. Their success. D. Their support for each other.. 27. What is the author's purpose in writing the text? A. To show his love of films. B. To remember a friend. C. To introduce a new movie. D. To share his acting experience.C How do you measure a chicken's happiness? Is it in the way it runs for food? Or by how much time it spends cleaning itself ? To find the answers to these questions, researchers in Canada are putting 16 kinds of chickens through a series of physical and mental tests. They're watching how well the birds can climb over a barrier for food, how nervous they appear to be and whether they play with a fake worm. Chickens can't say how they feel, but researchers believe that playing with the worm might be a sign of happiness. Stephanie Torrey is one of the researchers. Torrey said the animal welfare world wants to do more than just reduce suffering. Now, researchers aim to learn if and how animals can really enjoy their lives. Supporters of animal welfare say today's chickens are unusually huge and in great pain. They say the industry needs to change breeds(品种). Many in the chicken industry say there is no problem. They say that broiler chickens(肉食鸡), the most commonly used bird, may not move around a lot because they don't have a lot of energy. Even if the industry agreed to change breeds, it's unclear what the new birds should look like. John Glisson of the US Poultry and Egg Association says broiler chickens are especially inactive by nature. Some people may mistake the birds' inactivity for a medical problem. The industry says changing chicken breeds is unnecessary, and that changing to broiler chickens that don't grow as big or as fast would mean using up more water and other resources. Chicken prices at food stores would be higher, too. "It's crazy for anyone to have to remind the industry that birds naturally walk, "said Josh Balk, the Humane Society's vice president of farm animal protection. He said the study in Canada will provide important information what breeds of chickens might suffer less. 28. Why does the author raise the questions in the first paragraph? ______ A. To express his doubts about them. B. To introduce points for research. C. To compare various ideas about them. D. To summarize the research in Canada. 29. According to researchers, chickens may be happy if they ______. A. play with fake worms B. seem not to be nervous C. climb over a harrier for food D. pass mental tests successfully 30. People's opinions on chicken breeds can be best described as ______ . A. ambiguous B. arbitrary C. conservative D. controversial 31. What result may switching to broiler chickens bring about? ______ A. Chicken quality may be decreased. B. Chicken supply may not be abundant. C. Chickens may become more inactive D. Chicken may become more expensive. . D Nobody needs reminding that exercise is good for our health, but we may need reminding that it needs to be done in the right way. Light exercises are a great way to improve circulation and keep our muscles active, especially if the rest of the day will be spent sitting in front of a computer or in a lecture hall. However, certain sports like long distance running require training to build up our bodies so they can handle the challenge. If we go into such sport cold, it can shock our muscles, hearts, lungs and other organs and cause severe pain or in some cases, even death. Some people are born with medical conditions that go unnoticed until they stress the unstable part of their body. A weak heart may never be seen until we do something that causes extreme physical effort. Recently there have been cases of people dying while running long distances. Also, a university student died after taking a 1,000m running exam. Some universities and high schools have cut long distance races (i.e. 3,000m, 5,000m)from their campus sports games, partly because of the supposed danger and partly because they say fewer people are entering such events. Maybe education about such events is lacking, especially during primary and high school. People participating in such competitions should realize that a reasonable amount of training is required beforehand and having a medical check is wise, especially for a marathon. People shouldn't be forced to participate in events that push them past their limits, especially if they haven't warmed-up completely. Cancelling events could lead to people becoming less healthy and overweight. Maybe these events shouldn't be cancelled, but organizers and participants should be more careful about regular health checks. 32. Why does the author write the text? ______ A. To give us some reminding on exercises. B. To persuade us to take less sports. C. To advise students to have regular exercises. D. To require cancelling long distance running. 33. What does the underlined word "cold" in paragraph 2 probably mean? ______ A. Having trained a lot. B. Without any preparation. C. Having a low temperature. D. In an unfriendly way. 34. Why do some universities and schools cancel long distance races? ______ A. Because no students are willing to enter such events. B. Because the students' physical conditions are too poor to finish them. C. Because long distance running is not fit for students. D. Because they worry about the supposed danger in such races. 35. What does the author advise us to do before running a marathon? ______ A. Have a medical check and warm-up exercises. B. Push ourselves past our limits. C. Participate in it confidently. D. Try to lose some weight first. 第二节 七选五 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。 Starting university can be a costly experience for most students. But thankfully, with a little know-how, you can gain the benefits of being a student with a lot more cash in your pocket than you would have expected. 36 Checking out these top money-saving tips might be helpful. Save money on food 37 In fact. it can be a useful habit to compare the price. Shop around and find the cheapest option. One of the easiest and most efficient ways to do that is by using a price comparison site. Use student transport discount We have a love-hate relationship with public transport. 38 Luckily, most cities have local bus operators that offer students passes, which are much cheaper than standard tickets. These can usually be used at all times of the day, including peak(高峰)travel limes. 39 Going out to recreational activities can be expensive. So take full advantage of student offers, where drinks are cheap and entry is often free. Be sure to keep an eye out for any freebies and special student offers advertised at local restaurants, cinemas and high street shops. Spend less on textbooks Before you rush out and spend your entire student loan(贷款)on books, check your lecture outlines and figure out which books you really do need to own, and which ones you can just borrow from the library. 40 And you can also share the cost with your classmates. A. Use student offers when socializing. B. Students shouldn't go to entertainment activities. C. Being a money-saving student has never been easy. D. Remember all your textbooks are available in the library. E. While it may be necessary to use public transport, it's not always cheap. F.
