第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分 35 分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上
将该项涂黑。 A
When Thomas Panek lost his eyesight more than 25 years ago, the anxious runner doubted
whether he would pursue his lifelong passion again. “It was too scared to run,” he said.
Indeed, although Panek had been running since high school, the idea of running blind seemed
altogether too difficult. But he did manage to keep his dream alive—with help from human guides
who assisted him on each run.
Even so, he lost the real joy of the run—the thrill of independence that comes from completing
a course on his own. “When you’re tied to another person, it’s no longer your own race.” the
48-year-old said. “The independence isn’t quite there.”
But Panek found a friend—indeed, man’s best friend—who would help him regain that sense of
purpose. Not only did Panek rediscover his love for running, but, along the way, he founded Guiding
Eyes for the Blind, an organization dedicated to providing service dogs for the visually damaged.
On March 16, Gus glided across the finish line with his human at the New York City Half
Marathon. In that moment, they were both recorded into the history books. Panek, who finished the
course in a little more than two hours and 20 minutes, became the first blind runner to complete the
race led by dogs.
Panek pointed out that it wasn’t just Gus who provided the wind beneath his running shoes. In
all, three guide dogs helped him see his way to the finish line. Siblings Westley and Waffle picked
up the early parts of the course, each running between five and eight kilometers of the 21-kilometer
race. Along the way, the whole team got plenty of support from event host New York Road Runners.
With retirement approaching, it would be the faithful yellow labrador’s last race. But for Panek,
the road ahead remains long and bright—not only for him, but for anyone with a disability who still
hopes to run down a dream.21.What happened to Panek 25 years ago?
A.He gave up his dream. B.He became blind.
C.He found running blind easy. D.He won the first prize.
22.From the passage, we know that Gus _________.
A.is an instructor of Panek B.is a good marathon competitor
C.is a dog for the visually damaged D.is an organizer of the running event
23.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Failure is the mother of success.
B.Where there is a will, there is a way.
C.All things are difficult before they are easy.
D.We can make a difference by helping others.
B
Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People
settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communication and trade.
New York City, for example, is near a large habour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300
years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly
over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson,
Canada, was unmapped wilderness. But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it
was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000
Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People
went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up
icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without
warning, Anavalanche ( 雪 崩 ) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to
Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for
gold,4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives
But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and
wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The
city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard
there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come.
Today, people still come and go to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City --its present population is 762.
24. What attracted the early settlers to New York City?
A. Its business culture B. Its small population
C. Its geographical position. D. Its favourable climate
25. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?
A. Two-thirds of them stayed there B. One out of five people got rich
C. Almost everyone gave up. D. Half of them died
26. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson
A. They found the city too crowded B. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere
C. They were unable to stand the winter D. They were short of food
C
Education officials and industry experts are debating the future of online learning. The
discussion is important because hundreds of universities in the United States have recently moved
classes online because of the spread of the novel coronavirus(冠状病毒).
For Asha Choksi, the rise of Internet-based or online study programs has led to major
improvements in higher education. “It’s actually given a lot more power to students in terms of how,
when and where they learn,” the head of research for Pearson Education said.
Classes meet online through video conferencing. In this way, students are able to communicate
with each other and their professors even when they are far away from school. However, recent
research suggests the majority of college students and professors prefer in-person instruction(教
学), because they are concerned that companies supervising(监管)online learning programs are
not clear about the policies they have with the schools they serve.
“Students see in-class lectures as opportunities to engage with instructors, peers, and content.”
the researchers wrote. In-person learning is especially important in fields like healthcare and
teaching. Online education can never really take its place, said Stephanie Hall, a fellow with the
independent policy research group The Century Foundation. “Students need to experience...what
they’re learning about, reading about or hearing about in the classroom. And I don’t know yet the
degree to which technology can facilitate that.”
“When schools make agreements with online program managers to run their online programs, they often do not make important information available to students,” Hall said. This includes how much
control the company has over the design of the program or whether the faculty leading the classes
was involved in their design. In addition, many colleges and universities advertise online programs
as a low cost opportunity for students. But in some cases, students attending in-person classes get
financial aid and online students do not.
27. What does Choksi think of the online study program?
A. They offer students more choices in study.
B. They reform the country’s education system.
C. They provide advanced scientific knowledge.
D. They promote the development of technology.
28. According to most college students and professors, what’s the advantage of in-person learning?
A. It is convenient.
B. It costs less to study.
C. It can better meet school policies.
D. It can improve students’ communication skills.
29. What does the underlined word “facilitate” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. change. B. apply. C. achieve. D. control.
30. What is Hall’s attitude towards online education?
A. Hopeful. B. Critical. C. Uncaring. D. Supportive.

My Dad’s Best Flower
I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious
balcony(阳台). When my mom was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the
kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister,Maria. She was
seven years old and when my mon was absent she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great
hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations(康乃馨)in the flower boxes.
His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.
He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a
mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him
and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was
watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the
stems(茎)were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation like a doctor.
My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured
the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut
with the knife, just enough to fit in a grain of barley(插穗的芽). Then he bandaged the stem with a
small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. “No one should touch
them” , he said to mom. Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.
Mom used to tell us: “Do not touch daddy’s flowers. ” For us it was a fascinating experience to
watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big
enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.

续写段首句解读
Paragraph I: Ome day, my elder sister, tho loweddad very much, had a great idea. M love,
Paragraph 2: When my dad arrived, he tvent asusual, straight to the balcony and saw his
flowerslying on the floor like dead animals,一个 dead 就可以看出这一段应该是以消极的情绪开
Paragraph I
One day. my elder sister, who loved dad very much, had a great idea.Wanting to help dad, she cut
the flowers from their stems and arranged them on the floor. She believed that dad would be very
pleased to see them that way. When mom realized what my sister had done, she didn't say a word.
My sister didn't understand why we were so quiet without a word of appreciation.
Paragraph 2
When my dad arrived, he went as usual, straight to the balcony and saw his flowers lying on the
floor like dead animals. He looked towards the street to see if there was one from the neighbors
children who could have done it. Then he entered the living room and looked at mom in silence.
We all waited for a punishment. Mom, who always taught us to tell the truth looked at dad and said.
"We have no bad neighbors in our area. "Then with anice tone she continued, "No outsider did this
great job, only our lovely daughter ,Maria". Dad’s face changed from tense to a smile and then he said “Do I have a better flower than my lovely daughter?" My sister smiled and gave dad a big hug.
