A young man returns to his hometown of Aracataca, Colombia. He visits the house where he
lived as a child. Here, he remembers the most important memories of his childhood. Standing in
front of his old house, the young man makes an important decision. He says to himself, "I will
start my life over again. I will become a writer."
This man is the world famous writer, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez was born on March 6, 1928. During his early life, Garcia Marquez's
grandmother and grandfather told him many stories. His grandmother would tell him legends as if
they were real. Garcia Marquez says that his grandmother's way of storytelling later influenced his
own methods. When Garcia Marquez was about 20 years old, he left Aracataca and attended university in
Bogota. He began studying law because this was what his father wanted him to study. However,
Garcia Marquez was not happy.
During this time Garcia Marquez returned to Aracataca. It was on this visit that he realized he
must stop studying law. And he recognized that he must return to the dream of his childhood ----
writing. For the next few years, Garcia Marquez wrote for many different newspapers. And in
1955, he published his first book called "Leaf Storm".
For many years, Garcia Marquez knew he wanted to write about his grandfather's house in
Aracataca. To write this book, Garcia Marquez and his wife had to sell almost all of their
possessions to survive. But their act was worth it. The book, "One Hundred Years of Solitude" was
immediately successful. And this book created a path for Garcia Marquez's future success.

Bike-sharing
When public bikes rolled onto the streets of New York, it was treated as a national event and
even international media took notice. Like the situations in other cities carrying out the program,
bike-sharing in New York allows a subscriber to “borrow” a bike from one of hundreds of
locations in the city, use it, and return it to another location at the end of the journey. The United States may be a little late to the game, but the business of European-style bike
share isn’t that old to begin with. In a 2003 paper for Transportation Quarterly, bike share expert
Paul DeMaio, then a transportation planner for Alexandria, identified three generations of
public-use bike programs, going back to 1968 in Amsterdam with the use of so-called “White
Bikes.”
The next major development was in Copenhagen, which introduced a coin-operated system
in 1995 called “City Bike.” For 17 years, these bikes zipped through the streets of Denmark’s
capital until the program was shut down late last year—it’s getting an upgrade to the third
generation technology.
Sponsored by media giant Clear Channel, the French city of Rennes brought the next
generation of bike share technology to the world in 1998 by replacing coin operation with card
access and electronic records. From there the technology has progressed, picking up GPS(Global
Position System)and real-time tracking along the way, and has spread throughout Western
Europe—and the world.
At present, there are 553 bike share programs in operation worldwide and another 193 in
planning or under construction. And they’re not just in Europe and North America. The worldwide
leader in bike-sharing, as measured by the number of bikes, is China. According to data collected
by the Earth Policy Institute, 20 of the 25 largest bike share programs are Chinese. Its largest one,
in the city of Wuhan, has twice the number of bikes as all of France’s shares combined.
The benefits of bike-sharing programs in any city are plentiful. They relieve traffic jams,
relax parking shortages, reduce air pollution and promote fitness. So if you are in any city where
public bikes are provided, get out of your car during rush hour and try bike-sharing!
8. In which city did bike-sharing start?
A. Alexandria. B. Amsterdam. C. Copenhagen. D. Rennes.
9. Why was the coin-operated system closed in Copenhagen?
A. Because bikes made the streets over-crowded.
B. Because it would be replaced by a new system.
C. Because its time limit was reached after 17 years.
D. Because no sponsors provided money to support it.
10. We can learn from the passage that bike shares are __________.
A. free of charge B. costly program C. time-consuming D. environmental-friendly
11. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Bike shares have gained worldwide popularity.B. Most bikes used in the program are of European-style.
C. Bike share program in China first started in the city of Wuhan.
D. A national celebration for the program was held in New York.

To Friend or Not to Friend
We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear
the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social
networking sites have become extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents
as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with
latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day to day lives as they
always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more
parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This
realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking
sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who
they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in
real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from
a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On
the one hand we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make
them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a
sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did
before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their
request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are
hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be
independent.”
Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow if you do
choose not to add them to your friends list.
12. From Paragraph 2, we learn that ______.
A. parents feel secure about their privacy online
B. social networks successfully fill the generation gap
C. parents have realized the importance of social networksD. social networks offer a platform for parents to communicate
13. Teenagers may refuse a parent’s friend request because ______.
A. they hide something from their parents
B. they are unwilling to be watched by parents
C. their parents tend to fall behind in technology
D. their parents make negative comments on them
14. The passage is mainly about ______.
A. privacy online B. social networks
C. the generation gap D. parents’ friend requests
15. The passage is written mainly for ______.
A. parents B. teenagers C. teachers D. researchers

Many people might feel lost during a major transition in life. Life coaching, however, is the
best choice for anyone who is looking for ways to get through the tough path of life.
16 Some life coaches might focus only on certain types of situations, like advancing
careers, while others may be willing to help with nearly any life transition.
A life coach will often act as an adviser for his clients. 17 Many times, he will also
be able to look at a client’s life with fair eyes and offer fresh ideas on certain situations. In doing

18 During this interview, the life coach should find out what the client’s wants, needs
and goals are in life.
How to help each client is different to everyone, and it is a very individualized process.
19 Because of this, a life coach must develop plans based on each client’s strengths,
weaknesses, abilities and so on. A life coach will also usually take each client’s morals and values
into consideration.
Some life coaches may be able to find employment with a few select universities and corporations. There are also a handful of large life coaching firms that hire life coaches as well.
20 The majority of life coaches, however, work for themselves, opening their own life
coaching practices.
A. Methods that work for one client may not work for another.
B. A good life coach should try to satisfy all the needs of his clients.
C. He is often expected to listen closely to their concerns and problems.
D. Before a life coach can help a client, he first needs an in-depth interview.
E. Life coaches offer instruction to all types of people in different stages of their lives.

G. Generally, there are no strict education requirements for starting a life coaching career.
