2020 高三冲刺模拟训练试题十三
第一部分:阅读理解 (共两节,40 分)
第一节:(共 15 小题,每题 2 分,满分 30 分)

Online Degrees
Today, you can earn a degree from a major university without ever having sat in one of their
classrooms. Many colleges and universities are offering online courses and degree programs now.
Online Learning Programs
With a computer and an Internet connection, you can earn a degree from home, work, or
anywhere else for that matter. Online degree programs follow much the same routines as
traditional learning, with a few twists. There are lectures, but they won't be in person. There are
assignments (作业) , but you won't hand them to your instructor. In most situations, you are free to
"go to class" when it fits your"schedule. If you get a phone call during class, you don't have to
miss anything. If you get sick, you don't have to ask for someone's notes, and you just visit the
lecture later.
You'll communicate with your instructor by e-mail, chat room and instant messaging. Your
classroom will live in a special software program. Contrary to popular belief, you will have close
contact with other students and the instructor.
Evaluating the Program
There are a lot of questions to ask before you make your selection, such as:
How do students interact with each other?
★ Online programs can use chat rooms, instant messaging, teleconferencing, and video
conferencing to communicate. The key is to find a program that has this interaction built into it
and even requires it.
★What kind of reputation does the school have?
It may seem simple-a good school will have a good online program. This reputation, however,
may not be as straightforward as you think. It's not uncommon for a great school to have a weak
program or two. So you'd better look at the overall quality of the school and make a judgment.
The Employers' View
As more and more employees get online degrees and use them in the workforce( 职 场 ) ,
hiring managers will begin to feel more secure about the quality of education these people have.1. In which way is online education special?
A. If you get sick, you'll miss the lecture.
B. There are lectures, but you don't need to meet the lecturers.
C. If you get a phone call during class, you will miss something.
D. There are assignments, and you must hand them to your instructor.
2. What is the most important part of online communication?
A. To use e-mails.
B. To look for a program with interaction.
C. To use chat rooms and instant messaging.
D. To use teleconferencing and video conferencing.
3. For whom is the passage probably written?
A. College students. B. Hiring managers.
C. Adult students. D. High school students.

Is the ‘Go to College’ Message Overdone?
Even in a weak job market, the old college try isn’t the answer for everyone. A briefing paper
from the Brookings Institution warns that “we may have overdone the message” on college, senior
fellow Isabel Sawhill said.
“We’ve been telling students and their families for years that college is the only way to
succeed in the economy and of course there’s a lot of truth to that,” Ms. Sawhill said. “On average
it does pay off… But if you load up on a whole lot of student debt and then you don’t graduate,
that is a very bad situation.”
One comment that people often repeat among the years of slow job growth has been the value
of education for landing a job and advancing in a career. April’s national unemployment rate stood
at 7.5%, according to the Labor Department. The unemployment rate for high-school graduates
over 25 years old who hadn’t attended college was 7.4%, compared with 3.9% for those with a
bachelor’s degree or more education. The difference is even bigger among those aged 16-24. The
jobless rate for those with only a high school diploma in that age group is about 20%. At the same
time, recent research by Canadian economists cautions that a college degree is no guarantee of
promising employment.
Ms. Sawhill pointed out that among the aspects that affect the value of a college education is
the field of one’s major: Students in engineering or other sciences end up earning more than ones
who major in the arts or education. The cost of tuition and the availability of financial aid are
other considerations, with public institutions generally a better financial bargain than private ones. She suggested two avenues for improving the situation: increasing vocational( 职 业
的)-technical training programs and taking a page from Europe’s focus on early education rather
than post-secondary learning. “The European countries put a little more attention to getting people
prepared in the primary grades,” she said. “Then they have a higher bar for whoever goes to
college—but once you get into college, you’re more likely to be highly subsidized(资助).”
She also is a supporter of technical training—to teach students how to be plumbers, welders
and computer programmers—because “employers are desperate” for workers with these skills.
4. People usually think that _____.
A. the cost of technical schooling is a problem
B. one will not succeed without a college degree
C. technical skills are most important for landing a job
D. there is an increased competition in getting into a college
5. What does the underlined part “taking a page from” mean?
A. Hearing from. B. Changing from. C. Differing from. D. Learning from.
6. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Public institutions charge more for education.
B. European universities are stricter with students.
C. Students with certain skills are in great demand.
D. Canadian students prefer to major in engineering.
7. Ms. Sawhill may probably agree that _____.
A. too much stress has been put on the value of college degrees
B. technical training is more important than college education
C. a college degree will ensure promising employment
D. it’s easier for art students to find favorite jobs

Last week I did something that scared me. I stood in front of nearly 200 financial planners
and I talked to them about why financial blogs are a good thing.
I’m a confident writer. I’ve been doing this long enough that I know my strength and my
limitations. I’m less confident as a speaker. I don’t have time to pause to collect my thoughts. I’m
not able to edit. I’m afraid of being trapped in a corner without being able to talk my way out.
Basically, I’m scared to speak.
It would be easy to simply refuse the chances that come my way. When somebody asks me to
speak in front of a group, I could say “no”. When radio and television stations call for an
interview, I could say “no”. But for the past two years, I’ve been following my own policy to say
“yes” to new chances.
To say “yes” is to live in fear. My goal is to continually improve myself to become better
than I am today. One way to do that is to do the things that scare me, to take them on as
challenges, and to learn from them — even if I fail.
In mid-November, a local station asked me to appear on live television. “I realize it’s short
notice,” the producer wrote, “but we’d love to have you on the show if you’re available tonight.” I was frightened. I thought about recent taped television interviews that I had hated. I was afraid of
what might happen.
But I also thought about the things that had gone right. I thought of how my speaking skills
had improved over the past year. And then I thought of the book I was reading, a book that I had
bought for $1.29 at the local store. The Magic of Thinking Big was a huge bestseller during the
1960s. Written by Dr. David Schwartz, a professor at Georgia State University, the book contains
dozens of practical tips on how to take risks to achieve big goals. Schwartz argues that nobody
will believe in you until you believe in yourself.
So when the television producer asked if I wanted to appear on his show, I thought big.
“Sure,” I said. “I’ll do it.” I acted confidently, but on the inside I was frightened. What I needed
was techniques to build up my confidence and to overcome my fear.
8. Why is the author afraid of speaking in public?
A. He is aware of his potential. B. He has few chances to talk.
C. He is not able to edit what he says. D. He likes writing better.
9. The underlined words “my own policy” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ________.
A. self-improving through challenges B. hesitating before chances
C. turning down the invitations D. saying yes to fear
10. The author mentioned the book The Magic of Thinking Big mainly because ________.
A. it was inspiring B. it was a bestseller
C. its author was famous D. its price was attractive
11. What is the author’s purpose to write the passage?
A. To analyze his strength and weaknesses. B. To give practical tips on speaking in public.
C. To persuade people to follow his example.D. To share his experiences of overcoming fear.
D
Smile! It makes everyone in the room feel better because they,
consciously or unconsciously, are smiling with you. Growing evidence
shows that an instinct for facial mimicry(模仿) allows us to empathize(共情)
with and even experience other people’s feelings. If we can’t mirror another
person’s face, it limits our ability to read and properly react to their expressions. A review of this
emotional mirroring appears on February 11 in Trends in Cognitive Sciences.
In their paper, Paula Niedenthal and Adrienne Wood, social psychologists at the University
of Wisconsin, describe how people in social situations copy others’ facial expressions to create emotional responses in themselves. For example, if you’re with a friend who looks sad, you might
“try on” that sad face yourself without realizing you’re doing so. In “trying on” your friend’s
expression, it helps you to recognize what they’re feeling by associating it with times in the past
when you made that expression. Humans get this emotional meaning from facial expressions in a
matter of only a few hundred milliseconds.
“You reflect on your emotional feelings and then you generate some sort of recognition
judgment, and the most important thing that results in is that you take the appropriate action—you
approach the person or you avoid the person,” Niedenthal says. “Your own emotional reaction to
the face changes your perception of how you see the face in such a way that provides you with
more information about what it means.”
A person’s ability to recognize and “share” others’ emotions can be prevented when they
can’t mimic faces. This is a common complaint for people with motor diseases, like facial
paralysis(瘫痪) from a stroke, or even due to nerve damage from plastic surgery. Niedenthal
notes that the same would not be true for people who suffer from paralysis from birth, because if
you’ve never had the ability to mimic facial expressions, you will have developed compensatory
ways of interpreting emotions.
People with social disorders associated with mimicry or emotion-recognition damage, like
autism(自闭症), can experience similar challenges. “There are some symptoms in autism where
lack of facial mimicry may in part be due to limitation of eye contact,” Niedenthal says.
Niedenthal next wants to explore what part in the brain is functioning to help with facial
expression recognition. A better understanding of that part, she says, will give us a better idea of
how to treat related disorders.
12. According to the passage, facial mimicry helps ________.
A. experience one’s own feelings clearly B. change others’ emotions quickly
C. respond to others’ expressions properly D. develop friendship with others easily
13. We can know from Paragraph 4 and 5 that ________.
A. people with motor diseases may also suffer from autism
B. people born with facial paralysis may still recognize emotions
C. people with social disorders can’t have eye contact with others
D. people receiving plastic surgery have difficulty in mimicking faces
14. According to Niedenthal, the next step of the study will focus on ________.A. how we can treat brain disorders
B. what can be done to regain facial mimicry
C. how our brain helps us with emotional mirroring
D. what part of our brain helps recognize facial expression
15. The passage is written to ________.
A. discuss how people react positively to others’ smiles
B. draw people’s attention to those with social disorders
C. introduce a new trend in facial expression recognition
D. explain how emotional mirroring affects people’s empathy

Family Values
To understand a nation, you should first get to know its minimum unit-family. 16
In the US, upon reaching an appropriate age (usually between 18 and 21 years) , children
are encouraged, but not forced, to "leave the nest" and begin an independent life. 17 Parents
do not arrange marriages for their children, nor do children usually ask permission of their parents
to get married. Youn g adults meet their future spouses (配偶) through other friends, at jobs,
and in organizations and religious institutions. Although children choose their own spouses,
they still hope their parents will approve of their choices.
Parents feel that children should make major life decisions by themselves in many families.
A parent may try to influence a child to follow a particular profession but the child is free to
choose another job. 18 A son may deliberately decide not to go into his father's business
because of a fear that he will lose his independence in his father's workplace. This independence
from parents is not an indication that parents and children do not love each other. Strong love
between parents and children is universal and this is no exception in the American family.
19 It is not like we Chinese. Parents are rulers and masters. We Chinese love our
parents with fear and total respect. In America, children always have their own opinions and even
can talk about some sensitive problems with their parents, like family financial situation, the
relationship between mother and father, and even sex. 20 Therefore, it is contrary that, on one hand, Americans admire independence and
equality that they don't want to make sacrifice to make up a family, but on the other hand,
Americans think highly of family in their value system.
A. In the American family, children and parents are equal.
B. It can reflect the traditional values and customs of a nation.
C. When it comes to big problems, children do not have to always follow their parents' ways.
D. After children leave home, they often find social relationship and financial support outside
the family.
E. Although Americans pay much attention to independence and equality, they don't believe in
making sacrifice.
F. Sometimes children do precisely the opposite of what their parents wish in order to declare
their independence.
G. Many of them are expected to leave what could be life's most important decision-marriage-
almost entirely up to luck.

Dear Anne,
I’m indeed very sorry that I didn’t attend your birthday party the day before
yesterday. I feel awful about it and am writing to apologize to you.
It was nice of you to invite me to your birthday party. I should have come and
celebrated the important occasion with you, but much to my regret, the end-of-term
exam is around the corner, so I was so busy preparing for the exam that I forgot the
appointment. I hope you can understand my situation and forgive me. Is it possible for
you and me to have a private meeting after the exam? I do long for a pleasant chat
with you.
It is much to my regret that I missed the chance of such a happy get-together.
Once again, please accept my sincere apology.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
