Born and raised in America, very rarely had I ever seen a panda. I had expected this moment ever since my mother told me that we would be volunteering at the Center. When my cousin and I arrived at the Center and received our uniforms and gloves, any nervousness I had felt during the car ride quickly faded and changed into excitement. Our first task was to clean up the panda's cage. Although it was a boring job, it was interesting to be in the panda's living area and see how big the animals really are. Pandas actually fear heat, so the Center provides each animal with an ice block to keep it comfortable. When it was time to feed the pandas, the keeper gave us five pieces of food each, which consisted of bamboo, carrots, or bread to feed to a oneyear- male. Never having dreamed of being so close to a panda. I old was delighted by the action and after listening to it munch (用力咀嚼)on the food, hurriedly offered a piece more. Next, we watched a video on China's goal to help giant pandas back into the wild. It explained China's efforts to raise them to increase the population, and detailed measures taken to train the pandas to enter their nature reserve once again.
The workers had to spend lots of time teaching the animals how to live in nature and guaranteeing their safety at all times. I am grateful to have been able to volunteer for a day and will treasure the experience for the rest of my life. 21.How did the writer feel on the way to the Center? A.Excited. C.Bored. A.Wearing uniforms. C.Feeding the panda. A.To attract more volunteers. B.To keep them comfortable. C.To help them back to nature. D.To gain more experience. B I left England for Sydney in September. It was a career move for my husband, and our 20year- daughter was feeling adventurous and old decided to come, too. However, just before leaving England, my 79yearold mother suffered a stroke ( 中 风 ). Being strong and independent, she continues to live at home with the help of social services. But she couldn't look after the garden. I thought how wonderful it would be if there was an organization offering volunteer help. Friends asked me what I planned to do in Australia, and I told them I would be looking for a volunteer position with a gardening organization. Imagine my surprise when I found just the organization I had been looking for―Easy Care Gardening (ECG)! There are several reasons why I volunteer for ECG. Firstly, as a newcomer to Australia I meet many great people who, like me, volunteer some of their time. We cover a large age range, but all love gardens and helping others. Secondly, through working with ECG I have been lucky enough to B.Nervous. D.Calm. B.Cleaning the cages. D.Watching the video.

explore Sydney's North Shore that I might not have had the opportunity to visit otherwise. Finally, there are all those wonderful people who we call “clients (客户)”, but are more like friends when we visit them often and tend their gardens. What great people I have met, and stories they have to tell―the family histories, where they come from and the reasons for immigrating to Australia. I find it a privilege to have access to private gardens which, in many cases, have been the joy of their owners for many years. Each one is individual and reflects the character, needs and the history of each family. Indeed, the gardens reflect the multicultural and historical background of Sydney. 24.Why did the author move to Sydney? A.She planned to volunteer there. B.Her husband would work there. characterized by the use of green manure (肥料), biological pest control methods and special farming techniques to keep soil productive. Limiting the use of manmade chemicals or completely doing away with them reduces the risk of diseases. Today, organic farming is a major and preferred industry around the world. Organically grown food products have a huge market, with farmlands covering about 10% of the total world farmland. The hard work of Sir Albert Howard, the Father of Organic Farming, has paid off. Advantages of Organic Farming: (1) The economics of organic farming are characterized by increasing profits through reduced water use and reduced soil erosion(侵蚀). (2)Organic farming produces the same crops as those produced through traditional farming methods, but uses half the energy, and holds 40% more top soil. (3)Farming the organic way enables farmers to get rid of weeds without the use of any chemicals. (4) The use of green pesticides (杀虫剂) is environmentally friendly and does no harm to human's health. Disadvantages of Organic Farming: (1)Organic methods of farming produce less, compared to traditional farming techniques. (2)Organic agriculture does little to fight global climate change. Though organic farming practices are recognized as giving out less CO 2, but not to a significant degree. However, though there are some disadvantages to organic farming, farms where organic methods for cropping have been used have more advantages than traditional farms. Organic agriculture is surely better in the long term. 28.The last sentence in Paragraph 1 shows that Sir Albert Howard ________. A.worked hard for nothing B.succeeded in organic farming
