第 I 卷
第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分 35 分)
第一节(共 10 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 25 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
When their daughter Morey started kindergarten, the Belanger family were
worried because their 6-year-old daughter is deaf. Rather than send her to a special
school for deaf children, Morey’s parents decided to give her a traditional school
experience and send her to Dayton Consolidated School.
They worried if their daughter would be able to make friends. They also had
concerns as how her classmates would treat her and whether her teachers would be
able to help her learn effectively. But then the school had a response they never
expected—teaching all students and staff sign language. That way, everyone could
communicate with Morey on a personal level.
“I absolutely feel like it makes her feel welcomed,” said Morey’s mom. “I think
all the kids feel excited that they know another language and it’s fun. It makes me
happy to see her supported, loved and accepted. Morey is excited to go to school
every day. She’s made really good friends.”
Not only did they learn sign language, but they also put up sign language posters
in the hall and equipped a special hearing system. Additionally, they provided extra
training so that teachers could become more familiar with the language. “Morey,
without even knowing it, has taught us so much,” says headmaster Kimberly
Sampietro. “She’s brought a culture to our building that we didn’t have before. Morey
helps the whole class to learn the alphabet. The kids look up to her. They want her
around, and they want to partner with her.”
Morey’s hearing loss is a result of a condition that’s so rare that it’s never been
named. However, thanks to the hard work and goodwill of her classmates and teachers,
she can communicate with them on her terms.

D. Out of concern for a student with special needs.
2. What does Morey’s mom think of the kindergarten’s response?
A. Inspiring and considerate
B. Dull but worthwhile
C. Useful but complex
D. Shocking and contradictory
3. What do Kimberly Sampietro’s words in paragraph 4 imply?
A. Morey is good at teaching others.
B. Morey isn’t the only one who benefits.
C. Morey has become a symbol of the kindergarten.
D. Morey hasn’t brought any changes to the kindergarten.

Connie Monroe clicks a button, turns her wrist and watches as her neighborhood
floods.
The reed-covered shorelines are first to go. Then, the baseball field at Fleming
Park. By the time seawater reaches the senior center, it has covered streets, flooding
more than a dozen complexes that she can see.
Monroe moves her head up and down, side to side, taking in the simulated(模拟
的)view. This is what could happen to Turner Station, a historic African American
community, as sea levels rise.
“Everything’s underwater. The school is underwater. Our house is underwater,”
Monroe says. A frown(皱眉)forms below the virtual reality headset. “Is the water
really supposed to get that high?”
Climate change presents many challenges to coastal communities, but one of the
most worrisome problems is: how do you show people—and convince them—of a
possible future?
“It’s one thing to hear or read the news that sea levels could rise as high as 7 feet
in Maryland by the end of the century under worst-case situation, but it’s another to
imagine what that will look like in your own backyard.” says Jackie Specht, the
coastal science program manager. “And if it’s hard to imagine, it’s hard to face and
prioritize.”
Communicating the realness and immediacy of the climate threat is important to
climate researchers and those aiming to prevent its causes. But it’s also paramount to
communities faced with coming changes that are already unavoidable.
Climate projects need public support and input. That’s why Monroe and other
residents at this recent community meeting are being directed to sit in metal chairs,
put on virtual reality headsets and watch their homes flood.
Virtual reality is an immersive (沉浸式的) experience that can trick the human
brain into thinking it’s real. But tricking people is not the goal of the sea level rise
simulation being used at Turner Station, says Juliano Calil, one of the program’s高二年级英语试卷 第 2 页,共 7 页
developers.
The goal, he says, “is to help folks visualize the impacts of climate change and
the solutions, and also discuss the balance between them.”
4. What would you see in Turner Station as sea levels rise?
A. Shorelines covered by reeds.
B. Baseball fields used as parks.
C. Streets blocked with bricks.
D. Buildings drowned in water.
5. What does Jackie Specht suggest in Paragraph 6?
A. People are relatively safer in their backyards.
B. People don’t feel on the scene through the news.
C. The severity of disaster is beyond imagination.
D. The sea level is bound to rise 7 feet in Maryland.
6. Why is the virtual reality experience provided in the community meeting?
A. To prove climate threat.
B. To seek public backing.
C. To help scientific research.
D. To introduce VR technology.

Before dipping your hand into that bowl of M&Ms (一种巧克力豆)at the
holiday party, think about what you’re about to do. A lot. A new study finds that
people who imagine themselves consuming many pieces of candy eat less of the real
thing when given the chance.
Picturing a delicious food—like a juicy steak or an ice cream sundae( 圣
代)—generally whets (刺激)the appetite. But what about visualizing yourself eating
the entire sundae, spoonful by spoonful?
There’s reason to think that might have the opposite effect, says Carey
Morewedge, a psychologist at Carnegie Mellon University. Researchers have found
that repeated exposure to a particular food—as in taking bite after bite of it—decrease
the desire to consume more. But no one had looked to see whether merely imagining
eating has the same effect.
To find out, Morewedge and his colleagues fed M&Ms and cheese cubes to 50
university students. In one experiment, the participants first imagined performing 33
repetitive motions (动作): Half of them imagined eating 30 M&Ms and inserting
three quarters(25 美分)into the slot of a laundry machine. The other half imagined
eating three M&Ms and inserting 30 quarters. Then everyone was allowed to eat their
fill from a bowl of M&Ms. It was reported that those who’d imagined eating more
candy ate about three M&Ms on average, while the others ate about five M&Ms.
The researchers then extended their findings to another food group—cheese. As
in the M&M experiment, people who imagined eating 30 cheese cubes consumed less
of the real thing. But volunteers who imagined eating 30 M&Ms ate the same amount
of cheese as those who imagined eating three M&Ms. Thus, the effect is specific to
the type of food imagined.
The findings should have practical applications, says Morewedge. One possible高二年级英语试卷 第 3 页,共 7 页
strategy for weight watchers might be to spend a few minutes before each meal
imagining eating exactly the foods they’re about to consume, he says. Although he is
planning follow-up studies to investigate the potential of imagined consumption for
helping people control their appetite, Morewedge says he’s not planning to
experiment on himself over the holidays. “I really enjoy my mother’s cooking,” he
says.
7. What did Morewedge and his colleagues want to find out with the first experiment?
A. Whether imagining eating would lead to weight loss.
B. Whether picturing a delicious food would whet appetite.
C. Whether imagining eating would reduce appetite.
D. Whether repeated exposure to food would reduce appetite.
8. What does the underlined part “the others” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Those who imagined eating 30 M&Ms.
B. Those who imagined eating three M&Ms.
C. Those who didn’t participate in the experiment.
D. Those who didn’t imagine eating M&Ms.
9. According to the findings from the experiment, which of the following may make
you eat less?
A. Imagining eating any kind of food.
B. Imagining eating at least two kinds of food.
C. Imagining eating as many kinds of food as possible.
D. Imagining eating the same kind of food you will eat.
10. What can be the best title for the test?
A. How to Control Your Appetite
B. Imagining Eating M&Ms: A Way to Lose Weight
C. To Eat Less, Imagine Eating More
D. The Less You Imagine, the More You Eat

第二节 概要写作(满分 15 分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇 60 词左右的内容概要。
“WHO has been assessing this outbreak around the clock and we are deeply
concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming
levels of inaction,” WHO Director-General Tedros said. “We have therefore made
the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic.”
According to the WHO, a pandemic is “an epidemic occurring worldwide, or
over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries and usually affecting a large
number of people.”
Tedros said that pandemic is not a word to use lightly or carelessly. “It is a word
that, if misused, can cause unreasonable fear, or unjustified(不公平的)acceptance
that the fight is over, leading to unnecessary suffering and death,” he said.
Over the last two weeks the number of cases of COVID-19 outside China has
increased 13-fold(倍)and the number of affected countries has tripled(增至三倍),
Tedros said at a news conference in Geneva. The viral disease has swept into at least
114 countries and killed more than 4,000 people.
“In the days and weeks ahead, we expect to see the number of cases, the number
of deaths, and the number of affected countries climb even higher,” Tedros said.
“We have never before seen a pandemic sparked by a coronavirus. And we have
never before seen a pandemic that can be controlled at the same time,” he said. “We
have called every day for countries to take urgent and aggressive action. We have
rung the alarm bell loud and clear.”
“If countries detect, test, treat, isolate, trace, and mobilize(动员)their people in
their response,” he said, “those with a handful of cases can prevent those cases from
becoming clusters(群)and those clusters from becoming community transmissions.”
