The great-grandmother is learning English with the help of her family when she is at the age
of 91. She hopes to use the language at next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo. Takamizawa was
one of the more than 200, 00 people who requested to volunteer for Tokyo ’ s 2020 Games.
English is not required for service, but it is a useful skill for volunteers to have.
But Takamizawa had not been able to learn the language when she was young. Takamizawa
said that she was in high school when World War Two started. She said, “In my second year there,
English was banned because it was the enemy language.”
Takamizawa said her grandchildren helped persuade her that she was not too old to learn.
“When I talked to my grandchildren about my wish, they said, ‘It’s not too late. We will teach you
one word a day’”. Natsuko is Takamizawa’s granddaughter and main English teacher. Natsuko
sends a new English word to her grandmother’s phone every day. They also often work together
directly on phrases that Takamizawa will need for the Olympics. “Welcome to Tokyo, this is the
Olympic stadium, how can I help you?” Takamizawa answers when asked to say an English
phrase she has learned. Natsuko explains that she wanted to give her grandmother something to
enjoy. “I can clearly see her English is getting better. It’s my joy now.”
The EF English Proficiency Index is a measure of the level of English spoken in a country.
Japan ranks 49th among countries where English is not the first language. This situation is slowly
changing as younger generations welcome English. However, Takamizawa believes real change
will not happen unless Japanese people become more open to the rest of the world. With around
500 days to go until the games begin, the whole Takamizawa family is ready to welcome the
world to Tokyo.

Food serves as a form of communication in two basic ways. Sharing bread or other foods is a
common human tradition that can promote unity and trust. Food can also have a special meaning,
and play an important role in a family or culture's celebrations or traditions. The foods we
eat—and when and how we eat them—are often unique to a particular culture or may even differ
between rural (郊区的) and urban (市区的) areas within one country.
Sharing bread, whether during a special occasion (时刻) or at the family dinner table, is a
common symbol of togetherness. Many cultures also celebrate birthdays and marriages with cakes
that are cut and shared among the guests. Early forms of cake were simply a kind of bread, so this
tradition has its roots in the custom of sharing bread.
Food also plays an important role in many New Year celebrations. In the southern United
States, pieces of corn bread stand for blocks of gold for prosperity (兴旺) in the New Year. In
Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. A coin is put into the cake, which signifies
(预示) success in the New Year for the person who receives it.
Many cultures have ceremonies to celebrate the birth of a child, and food can play a significant
role. In China, when a baby is one month old, families name and welcome their child in a
celebration that includes giving red-colored eggs to guests. In many cultures, round foods such as
grapes, bread, and moon cakes are eaten at welcome celebrations to represent family unity.
Nutrition (营养) is necessary for life, so it is not surprising that food is such an important part
of different cultures around the world.

ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS is a game played all around the world. As kids, we have relied on
it to settle disagreements with friends – from which channel to watch to who gets to eat the last ice
cream – all because we think the results are completely random.
But are they?
Wang Zhijian, PhD, a professor at Zhejiang University, believes that there is a regulation
behind this simple game. So, he gathered 360 students, divided them into groups of six and had
each group play 300 rounds of rock-paper-scissors, reported USA Today.
After the first results, Wang thought he was wrong, because players chose each of the three
moves about one-third of the time, suggesting that the game is random after all. However, Wang
later noticed a surprising regulation of behavior in the data.
When players won a round, they usually stuck to the same choice. But when they lost, they
tended to change to a more powerful move. For example, if Player A had just thrown down
scissors to beat Player B’s paper, Player A was more likely to throw down scissors again while
Player B was likely to choose rock, since rock beats scissors.
According to Wang, this might be a function that is called “conditional response”. So, for the
next step of his study, as he told BBC, Wang plans to do some research about how human brains
make quick decisions when competing.

However, while Paul was saying this, another student, Brian, was thinking how
he could win. Brian did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.

paper and folded an airplane. It didn’t go very far, so Brian took another piece and
