Technology is making life easier for some dairy farmers. They use robotic
systems to milk their cows. Cows are trained to follow a series of paths that lead to
milking stations. Only one cow at a time can enter a station.
Once inside, the cow is rewarded with food. As the cow eats,a robotic arm
cleans and connects the animal to the milking machine. A few minutes later, milking
is complete. The gate is opened, the cow is released and the next cow enters.
The robotic systems are designed to operate 24 hours a day. The cows get to
decide when they want to be milked. Cows are milked an average of about three times
a day. Some are milked four to six times a day.
The cows wear collars around their necks that identify them to the system. A
computer keeps records on their eating and milking. A cow will be released from the
station if the computer decides it should not be milked.
The automated system also measures the temperature and color of freshly
produced milk. Milk will be thrown away if it does not pass the tests.
Professor Plaut believes the systems will appeal especially to the next generation
of farmers. She means young people who are more interested in technology and less
interested in working all the time on the farm. Still , she says the price of robotic
milking systems will continue to limit their use.
Doug and Tina Suhr have more than 100 cows on their family farm. Last year it
became the fourth farm in southeast Minnesota to get a robotic milking system. A
recent story in a local agricultural newspaper said the first robot cost 175,000 dollars.
The second cost 150,000 dollars.
Doug told AgriNews that wages ( 工 资 ) that would have been paid for one
employee in five years will pay for one robot. He says the increase in milk production
reaches a high of more than six kilograms per cow per day.
25. From the first paragraph,we can infer________.
A.the robotic system is designed to reduce labor
B.cows can be raised by robots in the future
C.robots direct cows into milking stations
D.cows are kept clean by robots on some farms
26. Besides milking cows, the robotic system also can________.
A.adjust(调节) the temperature of milking stations
B.judge the quality of fresh milk
C.improve the appetite of cows
D.keep fresh milk for two weeks
27. Why is the robotic system not popular now?
A.Because young people have no interest in it.
B.Because it is difficult to learn how to use it.
C.Because people can't afford to buy it.
D.Because it usually causes the waste of milk.
28. According to Doug, what is the wage of an employee?
A.150,000—170,000. B.750,000.
C.150,000—30,000. D.30,000—35,000.C
Books That Shaped America
Huckleberry Finn
Novelist Ernest Hemingway famously said, “All modern American literature comes from one
book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn...All American writing comes from that. There was
nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.” During their trip down the Mississippi on a
raft, Twain describes in a satirical (嘲讽的) and humorous way Huck and Jim’s encounters with
hypocrisy, racism, violence and other evils of American society. His use in serious literature of a
lively, simple American language full of dialect and informal spoken expressions paved the way
for many later writers, including Hemingway and William Faulkner.
Gone with the Wind
The most popular romance novel of all time was the basis for the most popular movie of all
time (in today’s dollars). Margaret Mitchell’s book,Gone with the Wind, set in the South during
the Civil War, won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and it remains popular,
despite charges that its author had a blind eye regarding the horrors of slavery.
Leaves of Grass
The publication of the first slim edition of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass in 1855 was the
first appearance of a masterpiece that shifted the course of American literary history. Refreshing
and bold in both theme and style, the book experienced many revisions during Whitman’s
lifetime. Over almost 40 years Whitman produced multiple editions of Leaves of Grass, shaping
the book into an ever-transforming kaleidoscope (千变万化) of poems. By his death in 1892,
Leaves of Grass was a thick summary that represented Whitman’s view of America over nearly
the entire last half of the 19th century. Among the collection’s best-known poems are I Sing the
Body Electric, Song of Myself, and O Captain! My Captain! in praise of Abraham Lincoln.
The American Woman’s Home
This classic domestic guide, The American Woman’s Home, by sisters Catharine E. Beecher
and Harriet Beecher Stowe is dedicated to the women of America, in whose hands rest the real
fates of the Republic. It includes chapters on healthful cookery, home decoration, exercise,
cleanliness, good air ventilation (通风方法) and heat, etiquette, sewing, gardening and care of
children, the sick, the aged and domestic animals. Intended to elevate the “woman’s sphere” of
household management to a respectable profession based on scientific principles, it became the
standard domestic handbook.

Twain’s book?
A. Wonderful. B. Disappointing. C. Painful. D.
Confusing.
30. Which author is accused of neglecting the horrors of slavery?
A. Mark Twain. B. Margaret Mitchell. C. Walt Whitman. D.

B. Many poems were added to Leaves of Grass after 1855.
C. He showed little respect for Abraham Lincoln in his poems.
D. The poems reflected Walt Whitman’s bad opinions of America.D

第二节 (共 5 小题; 每小题 2 分, 满分 10 分)
根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有
两项为多余选项。Money Matters
Parents should help their children understand money. 36 So you may start talking
about money when your child shows an interest in buying things, candy or toys, for
example.
The basic function of money
Explain the basic function of money by showing how people trade money for
goods or services. It is important to show your child how money is traded for the
thing he wants to have. If he wants to have a toy, give him the money and let him
hand the money to the cashier (收银员). 37 When your child grows a bit older and
understands the basic function of money, you can start explaining more complex ways
of using money.
Money lessons
Approach money lessons with openness and honesty. 38If you must say no to a
child’s request, explain, “You have enough toy trucks now.” Or, if the request is for
many different things, say, “You have to make a choice between this toy and that
toy. ”
39
Begin at the grocery store. Pick out similar brands of a product—a name-brand
butter and a generic (无商标产品), for example. You can show your child how to
make choices between different brands of a product so that you can save money. 40 If
he chooses the cheaper brand, allow him to make another purchase with the money
saved. Later, you may explain how the more expensive choice leaves less money for
other purchases.
A. Wise decision
B. The value of money
C. Permit the child to choose between them.
D. Tell your child why he can—or cannot—have certain things.
E. Ask yourself what things that cost money are most important to you.
F. Talk about how the money bought the thing after you leave the toy store.
G. The best time to teach a child something about money is when he shows an
interest.
