“To be a musician,it’s like fulfilling a part of your life that’s irreplaceable. It’s something that I enjoy and I love to do and I get satisfaction from it.” That is Renald Richard.
Born in 1925 in Thibodaux,Louisiana,Richard’s memories of childhood are filled with music.
His father played the piano by ear. His uncles and cousins played instruments and sang.
Naturally, at the age of six, Richard started piano lessons at home.
At the age of 13 , Richard went to see a band performance at a church dance. He
noticed two young trumpet (小号)players in the band play the trumpet wonderfully. Richard
knew he had to take action. So he started lessons on the trumpet.
After high school, the government sent him into military service. He played his trumpet
during his time in the United States Navy Band. Later, he performed while touring in a Unit-
ed Services Organization (USO) variety show. Richard believed he had learned enough from
the USO show.
While playing in Houston, Texas in 1954, Richard was approached by the musician Ray
Charles. Ray Charles was forming a new band. He just got a hit record out and he would be
interested in Richard playing the trumpet in the band. Richard soon was playing his trumpet
for Ray Charles’ band Richard said,“Ray Charles was rigorous and he demanded the
same from band members. He was a perfectionist and he was rather strict about his music.
He went back to his hometown and became the high school’s band director until 1962.
Four years later, he moved again, this time to New York City.
Over the years, Richard has written many other songs that have been recorded by artists
including Joe Turner, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley to name a few. Living
now in Southern Florida, Richard is still active at the age of 92. As you can see, Richard’s

Timing is everything. Even how many calories someone burns while resting can depend
on the time of day, new data show, proving that when people eat and sleep is important for
maintaining proper health.
People burn about 129 calories when resting in the afternoon and evening than they do
resting in the early morning. Morning is better for burning carbohydrates(碳水化合物) while
evening is for burning fats.
Calories burned at rest fuel breathing, blood circulation and brain activity. They also help
maintain body temperature. But there had been conflicting data on whether people at rest
burn calories at a fairly constant rate. Metabolism (新陈代谢)is the rate at which the body
burns calories to fuel activities. The new study shows that a body’s resting metabolism is
governed by circadian (生理节奏的)clocks.Jeanne Duffy is a neuroscientist working at Women’s Hospital in Boston. She followed
seven people. They remained in windowless rooms for three weeks. That kept them from get-
ting any clue to the time of day. Each night, the seven went to bed four hours later than the
night before. The circumstances allowed the researchers to study the natural body rhythms
of each subject without outside influences, such as sunlight and darkness.
Study participants all showed clear rhythms for when they burned calories. But the timing
of the highest and lowest rates could vary from person to person. “That is normal for
circadian rhythms,” Duffy says. After all, some people are morning people, and others may
be night owls. The timing of their daily rhythms reflects those differences.
“ Regularity is really significant, ” Duffy says. Irregular schedules interrupt circadian
rhythms. That in turn can throw off your metabolism, causing people to burn fewer calories.
Studies have shown that shift work (working at night) and chronic sleep loss can cause
weight gain and health problems.
28.What can people do to burn more calories according to the text?
A. Rest in the evening. B. Eat enough healthy food.
C. Sleep in the early morning. D. Change their circadian clocks frequently.
29.Why were the seven people kept in the windowless rooms?
A. They would go to sleep early as usual.
B. It was easier to change the study schedule.
C. The researchers can get more accurate findings.
D. They could adapt to the new environment better.
30.What made the participants’ rate of burning calories different?
A. Their diet. B. Their weight C. their circadian rhythms. D. Their health problems.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To tell us the influence of habits. B. To stress the need of doing exercise.,
C. To show the importance of relaxation. D. To call on us to have a regular life.
D
SoFi isn’t like other fish, but it doesn’t seem to get noticed. With a tail that swings
side-
to-side, the one-eyed robotic fish was built by scientists at MIT5s Computer Science and
Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).
It is designed to swim naturally alongside other fish in open water and spy on them with-
out disturbing their natural habitats. The robot can use its camera to record behaviors of any-
thing from sharks and whales to schools of tiny fish.
With an instrument that does not impact the marine (海的)life and is not scary or
foreign to marine life, who knows what kind of magical and miraculous moments we can
capture ?” said Daniela Rus, director of CSAIL, “It will give us a better understanding of
under-water phenomena.
The researchers have 18-inch-long artificial fish for test swims in Fiji Rainbow Reef, where
it swam for up to 40 minutes in 50 feet of water. A diver directed the robot’s cements from
up to 32 feet away using a waterproof Super Nintendo controller.
The outside of the robot is a combination of soft rubber, flexible plastic and 3D-printed
pieces. It uses a custom sound-based communication system developed by the team to
receive movement instructions. The quiet motor-powered tail lets it master the quick-changing swimming patterns and movements of real fish. In addition, it uses sensors (传感器)
to help it avoid hitting or damaging marine environments like delicate reefs.
The CSAIL department has been working on underwater image and recording systems
for experience. more than seven years, but this is the first project that attempts to copy the
appearance and movements of fish so realistically.
The team intends to make SoFi even smarter so that it can make decisions without a
human diver feeding it instructions and move in a harmonized group of robot fish. The
researchers ultimately want to bring the tech to biologists, who could benefit from a new way
of collecting data and observations about ocean life and the impacts of climate change.
32.Why did the scientists design SoFi?
A. To take pictures of sharks. B. To keep the ocean’s balance.
C. To observe ocean life better. D. To protect fish’s natural habitats.
33.What does paragraph 5 talk about?
A. The function of SoFi. B. The devices of SoFi.
C. The way to operate SoFi. D. The theory of designing SoFi.
34.What may be the next step of the research on SoFi?
A. To make it more attractive. B. make it more intelligent.
C. To use it in more marine areas. D. To use it in designing robots.
35.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Environment. B. Health. C. Education.

Dear Lily ,
I’m glad to know you would like to invite me to the City Library to read books.
it’s my pleasure to spend some good time together with you , so I will join you.
If it’s convenient for you to go to the library on this Sunday morning, let me know it.
Because I have lots of homework to do, I have to return home before 4 pm. The library is
not far away from our school , so why not ride a bike to get there?
To have a wonderful reading experience, I want to know what kind of books you like
most and which writer is your favorite. Please tell me the details. I’m looking forward to your
reply.
