They can take their book token to a local bookseller and can use it to pick one of TEN
(exclusive, new and completely free) books. Or, if they’d rather, they can use it to get £1 off
any book or audio book costing over £2.99 at a participating bookshop or book club.
HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

is full of exciting and fun resources based on favourite books, characters and authors. It’s all

While John Bukaty specializes in live paintings at events around the world, he frequently
goes past public spaces that he thinks would be perfect for a large-scale art project. That’
s how he ended up painting a mural(笔画 ) that can be seen from space.
There was a large garage across from his Carondelet Street studio. While some may have
just seen a parking area, Bukaty saw a canvas(画布) and he spent a year daydreaming about
covering the space with art. By chance, Bukaty mentioned his thought to a friend who
happened to know the owner of the building. Happily for him. the building’s owner agreed
to the project, and Bukaty set to work.
He and a small team of assistants painted the mural, which stretches 130 feet by 100
feet, and filled in the image, which is based on an earlier painting of Bukaty’s. It took about
10 hours and 10 gallons of paint to create the piece. Since the project began around Mardi
Gras 2017, the mural took on a Carnival(狂欢节)theme, and the image of a woman wearing
a Mardi Gras mask with a feather took shape. Bukaty signed his name in two-foot letters.
The completed project was captured by Google Maps shortly after completion.
"Everybody loves it when they see it appear on Google Maps,” Bukaty said. “They think
it’s interesting. I still get some feedback from it. The idea of a satellite taking a picture of the
mural from space never occurred to Bukaty while he was working on it. While the project was a one-off, Bukaty doesn’t rule out working on another huge project in the future.

The World Health Organization reports cancer is on the increase around the world. But
it says preventive measures can save the lives of millions of cancer sufferers over the next 10
years.
Since 2010, nearly every country in the world has seen an increase in the number of
cancer patients. The WHO reports one in six people will develop cancer in their lifetime. At
least 10 million people will die from the disease every year. If the current trend continues, new
cancer cases will rise by 60 percent by the year 2040. In low- and middle-income countries,
they will rise by more than 80 percent. Andre Ilbawi, WHO’ s technical officer in cancer
control, says more people are dying from cancer in poorer countries because they lack the
services and cancer control measures that richer countries have.
Ilbawi said that controlling the disease does not have to cost a lot. The WHO report
shows that by investing in cancer services, governments can save 7 million lives by 2030.
“And that is at the cost of $2.70 per person in low- income countries and $8.15 per person
in upper middle-income countries.” Ilbawi said. WHO says cancer does not have to be a
death sentence. Prevention works. Elisabete Weiderpass, director of the International Agency
for Research on Cancer, says there have been great improvements in research on cancer
prevention and treatment. These measures are successfully keeping many people alive who
otherwise would have died. An example of such a policy is one that reduces workers’ contact
with cancer-causing materials. Other examples are measures to control tobacco use ,
vaccination(接种疫苗)against cancer-causing infectious agents and testing for early stages
of cancer.
In its report, WHO describes a series of measures proven to help in preventing new
cancer cases. For example, it notes that tobacco-related diseases are responsible for 25
percent of cancer deaths. Deciding not to smoke, it says, save billions of dollars and millions of lives.
28. Why do new cancer cases rise quickly in poorer countries?
A. They are lacking in cancer services. B. They ’ ve got little access to food.
C. They pay no attention to their health. D. They are short of skilled doctors.
29.How does Elisabete Weiderpass show prevention policy works?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By providing results.
30.What measure should be taken to prevent cancer?
A. Controlling tobacco use. B. Donating much money.
C. Reducing people’s contact. D. Testing the infectious causes.
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A. The cause of the death rate of cancer is being looked into.
B. Preventive measures should be taken to deal with cancers.
C. The number of cancer suffers is gradually decreasing.
D. Cancers are increasing but not a "Death Sentence".
D
If you are on a day out and fear that your mobile phone is running out of battery, Thorpe
Park’s idea can get rid of your worry. Riders on the park’s new attraction, The Walking
Dead, can now power your smartphones by screaming loudly. That’s because there are
devices on it that ‘harvest kinetic energy(动能).
All of the Walking Dead’s carriages have been fitted with the harvesting devices, which
not only suck up the energy of screams, but that from g-force too. The units are then removed
from the carriages by staff and put into an on-site mobile charging area. Thorpe Park said,
“If thrill-seekers are brave enough to open their eyes, they will see a set of LED lights in
blood red powering up as guests’ screams become louder... throughout the thrilling 90-
second experience.” The 188mm x 188mm x 67mm devices are jet black, combining its dark
and mysterious surroundings on the roller coaster. Designed and fitted by researchers at
Queen Mary University London and the engineering team at Thorpe Park Resort, the
technology took three months to accomplish from design to installation.
Thorpe Park Resort’s John Burton, who came up with the ride concept, said, “The
Walking Dead: The Ride is very scary, so it makes sense to be able to combine and use our
visitors’ screams to help solve a problem each and every one of us faces—losing the charge
on our mobiles.” Dr. Joe Briscoe, from Queen Mary University of London, said, “The system
uses a mini energy harvester to collect enough energy to charge a mobile phone. This is an
exciting concept that will undoubtedly be used more frequently in the future and prove
popular.”
32.What’s Thorpe Park’s new idea?
A. To set up a new attraction. B. To introduce a new roller coaster.
C. To sell mobile phones to the young. D. To power smartphones by screaming.

第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余
选项。
There’s a growing phenomenon called “medical tourism.” 36 One of those
million is documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, who traveled to Bumrungrad
International Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, for the latest episode of his CNN series, “Morgan
Spurlock Inside Man.”
37 Through his experience and in conversations with other travelers, Spurlock
discovered that, for some patients and some procedures, there are real advantages to medical
tourism.
1.World-class care
Not long ago, the reputation of overseas medical care was not reliable—third world
doctors whose training may not ha\ e met Western standards. Today, the best destination
hospitals in countries like Malaysia, India, Turkey and Thailand reportedly meet or exceed
Western standards. 38
2.Efficient services
The top destination hospitals are designed to be models of efficiency. At Bumrungrad,
each floor of the hospital has its own drugstore and own outpatient clinic, while a centralized
blood lab processes samples in an hour. An American patient, told Spurlock: “The most I’ve
ever sat waiting here has been 15 minutes. 39 Those brief waits feel even shorter when
the waiting room looks more like a five-star hotel than a hospital and your recovery room
has a view of the beach.
3.Lower costs
How incredible? According to data collected by AARP,a heart bypass(心脏搭桥)in the
United States typically runs S88,000. In Costa Rica, that figure drops to $31,500. Need a new
hip? $33,000 in the States and $12,400 in Thailand. 40 A good rule of thumb: if the
difference in cost to you is greater than $6,000, seeking care abroad will likely save you money.
A. Why fly halfway around the world for care?
B. Most of their doctors do post-graduate training overseas.
C. Paying the bill is about as simple as checking out of a hotel.
D. In the U.S., I’ ve sat up to two hours, waiting to get waited on.
E. Atypical nose job goes for $6,200 here but only $2,800 in Mexico.
F. Morgan Spurlock takes a look at medical tourism and flew to Thailand to have an operation.
G. In 2014, it is estimated that over a million Americans left the country to seek care abroad.
