If an American friend invites you to his or her home for dinner, keep in mind these
important rules.
First of all, arrive on time(but not early). Americans expect promptness. It's OK to be ten
or fifteen minutes late but not fortyfive minutes late.
Second, it is polite to bring a small gift. Flowers or candies are always good. If you take a
special gift that is made in your own country, your friend will certainly enjoy accepting that.
Wearing beautiful clothes and a smile is good but not enough. Table manners are also very
important. Do not open your mouth to talk when you are eating food. Also, chew food with
your mouth closed. When you want to get food that is a little far from you, do not stretch your
hands to reach for it. Ask others to pass the food to you.
After dinner, don't leave at once, but don't stay at your friend's house for too long, either.
A. Where will she have the party?
B. Let's make a cake for her.
C. I want to give her a birthday present.
D. Will she have a birthday party this evening?
E. When is her birthday?
F. How about buying her a book?
G. Let's buy some flowers for her.

When your friend seems to be getting tired, tell him or her that you need to leave. The next day,
call or write to say how much you enjoyed the evening.

Europe is a great place for traveling. But before you go there for a visit, you should know
something about the weather first.
The high season in Europe is from June to August. The weather is quite nice. There
probably won't be much rain and the temperatures are very comfortable. It's usually sunny all
day and it doesn't get dark until about 9: 30 p. m. —10: 30 p. m. And the farther north you go,
the longer the days get. Sometimes the temperature can be very high. You might need to take an
umbrella and wear a sunscreen (防晒霜). Europe may be too popular in summer. Sometimes
you have to stand in line for hours to buy tickets or have dinner. Bring Tshirts, shorts and
dresses so that you can feel a little cooler in the crowd.
If you don't like to stay with so many travelers, winter may be a good season for you.
7
There are very few visitors at that time. Hotels and plane tickets might be cheaper, too.
However, it can be really cold during the winter time. Days are short and it starts getting dark
pretty early. And it's rainy most of the days. So an umbrella is very useful. You might also need
to bring some warm clothes and dresses. Much of Western (西部的) Europe doesn't get much
snow. But when it does, you might fall in love with the beautiful place at once.
64. What don't you have to take if you go to Europe in July?
A. An umbrella. B. Warm dresses.
C. Shorts. D. Tshirts.
65. What's the advantage of visiting Europe in winter?
A. Nice weather and comfortable temperatures.
B. Beautiful snow and longer playtime.
C. Comfortable hotels and cheaper plane tickets.
D. Fewer travelers and less waiting time.
66. Which of the following is TRUE about Europe?
A. Days get dark very late in the high season.
B. It always snows in winter in Western Europe.
C. Hotels and tickets for planes are cheaper in summer.
D. Umbrellas and thick clothes are a must all year round in Europe.
67. Where might you find the article?
A. In a weather report.
B. In a guidebook.
C. In a history book.
D. On a TV program about hotels.

During my first two weeks at the University of California, Berkeley, I experienced some
unexpected, funny, and sometimes embarrassing situations. Allow me to share some with you.
But first, let me give advice to other foreign students who plan to study in the United States.
Check the weather before coming! I was very sure that California was sunny all year round so I
left all my jackets and sweaters in Paris. It was a huge mistake! It rained almost every day
during the first week in Berkeley.
8
I have to say that I quickly forgot these unlucky events. Life in Berkeley is very pleasant
and everything is so easy. For example, in only 24 hours I bought a mobile phone and rented a
flat. What's more, almost all the shops are open on Sunday.
The first thing that surprised me is that students may come late to class. They freely enter
and leave the classroom many times during class. In France, students respect the teacher's lesson,
so they are never late and they leave the classroom only at the end of the class.
The local people in California are in general very nice, open and active. However, I am not
totally used to their habits yet. Indeed, I was used to shaking my friends' hands every day in
France. During my second day at Berkeley, I shook the hand of one of my classmates whom I
had met the day before and he told me, “I think we already met!”
I live a great experience at present, and I would just encourage any student to become a
member in a program at UC, Berkeley.
68. The writer comes from ____.
A. Japan B. China
C. England D. France
69. The writer made a huge mistake because ____.
A. he didn't check the weather before coming
B. the weather in California was changeable
C. he brought a lot of clothes with him
D. he didn't take a mobile phone
70. When the writer's classmate said “I think we already met!”, he meant ____.
A. they were old friends
B. Americans needn't shake hands when they meet again
C. he was not used to shaking hands with others
D. the writer might forget about their last meeting
71. We can learn that ____ according to the passage.
A. California is sunny all year round
B. students in America are never late for class
C. life in Berkeley is enjoyable for the writer
D. people in California are not so friendly
9
72. According to the passage, the writer mainly wants to tell us ____.
A. his experience at UC, Berkeley
B. the relationship between classmates
C. his advice on studying abroad
D. the difference in attending a class

Do you know how to write a thankyou note? Maybe this article can help you.
Greet (问候) the Giver
That's the easy part, but you will be surprised how many people forget it. Dale Carnegie
taught us that people love to hear their own names and love to read them in ink (墨水). Even if
your handwriting is poor, you must still write your note by hand.
Show Your Thanks
The first paragraph(段落) seems as if it would be the easiest. In fact, it's the most difficult.
Be careful with the writing strategy (策略). You'd better use the present perfect tense (现在完成
时), which means what you write is happening at the moment.
Discuss Use
Say something nice about the thing and how you'll use it. Let's say it's something you love
and use all the time. But don't lie, even though some etiquette (礼仪) books may tell you it's
okay. If the gift is money, write how you will use the money, “It will be a great help when we
buy our new house. ”
Be Polite(礼貌的)
It's polite to say thanks again. So say it.
Give Your Regards(致意)
Use any word that works for you such as “Love”, “Yours Truly”, and “With
Love”. Then don't forget to write down your name.
