Humor Dictionary
Observational humour is based on comments about everyday life. Comedians who use this
type of humour often start by saying, “Have you ever noticed how...? ” Then, they make funny
comments about everyday things such as work, marriage, children, etc. This trend began in the
1970s with US comedians such as Bill Cosby and Jay Leno.
Slapstick humour is very physical. It involves characters falling down, hitting people or
crashing into things. This type of comedy is very common in cartoons such as Tom and Jerry,
Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Typical comedians, such as Laurel, Hardy(from The Three
Stooges), Charlie Chaplin, Rowan Atkinson are people's favorites.
Self-deprecating humour involves making jokes about yourself or drawing attention to your
faults. George Costanza from the comedy series Seinfeld uses a lot of self-deprecating humour,
often making jokes about his lack of hair, his weight and his shallow personality. Comedians such
as Chris Farley, Conan O’Brien, David Letterman and Woody Allen also use self-deprecating
comedy.
Toilet humour often focuses on the noises and functions of the body. It’s often viewed as
rude, impolite and childish, although many people find it very funny. There's a hilarious scene
involving toilet humour in the film Along Came Polly. Reuben (Ben Stiller) is invited back to
Polly’s apartment (Jennifer Aniston). After dinner, Reuben accidentally blocks the toilet. In an
attempt to unblock it, he uses her hand-embroidered towel (a gift from her grandmother) and an
expensive loofah. Eventually, the toilet overflows, leaving Reuben with no option but to leave.
21. Which statement about Slapstick humour is correct?
A. It can only be seen in cartoons. B. It mainly uses body movements.
C. It's the most popular humor. D. It often laughs at people and things.
22. Which of the following belongs to Self-deprecating humour?
A. George often teased himself about his bald head.
B. Bill Cosby often made funny comments on children.
C. Laurel often fell down on stage, and broke the microphone.
D. Tom made a thundering noise when he went to the toilet.
23. If you are interested in toilet humour, you can go to see______.A. Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. B. Tom and Jerry
C. The Three Stooges D. Along Came Polly

B
When you are a child, the whole world is like a big playground. I was living in Conyers,
Georgia the summer when it all happened. I was a second grader, and my best friend Stephanie
was only in the first grade. Both of our parents were at work and most of the time they let us go our
own way.
It was a hot afternoon and we decided to have an adventure in Stephanie's basement. As I
opened the basement door, I spotted a red steel can. It was paint. I looked beyond it and there lay
even more paint in bright colors like purple, orange, blue and green.
"Stephanie, I just found us a project for the day. Get some paintbrushes. Let’s paint." She
screamed with excitement as I told her of my plans and immediately we got to work. We gathered
all the brushes we could find and moved all of our materials to my yard. There on the road in front
of my house, we painted big stripes(条纹) of colors across the pavement (人行道). Stripe by stripe,
our colors turned into a beautiful rainbow. It was fantastic!
The sun was starting to sink. I saw a car in the distance and jumped up as I recognized the car.
It was my mother. I couldn't wait to show her my masterpiece. The car pulled slowly into the
driveway and from the look on my mother's face, I could tell that I was in deep trouble.
My mother shut the car door and walked towards me. Her eyes glaring, she shouted, "What in the world were you thinking?I understood when you made castles out of leaves, and climbed the
neighbors' trees, but this! Come inside right now!"I stood there glaring back at her for a minute,
angry because she had insulted (侮辱) my art.
"Now go clean it up!" Mother and I began cleaning the road. Tears ran down my cheeks as I
saw my beautiful rainbow turn into black cement(水泥).
Though years have now passed, I still wonder where my rainbow has gone. I wonder if,
maybe when I get older, I can find my rainbow and never have to brush it away. I guess we all
need some sort of rainbow to brighten our lives from time to time and to keep our hopes and
dreams colorful.

COur solar system might be crazier than we once thought. Scientists say that deep within
Uranus(天王星) and Neptune(海王星) it rains diamonds.
On the Earth, diamonds form under extreme heat and pressure. The inside of Uranus and
Neptune also has high temperatures and pressures. What's more, the blue planets are largely made
up of icy water and gases such as methane(甲烷). So scientists have long believed that deep inside
the two planets, the heat and pressure the methane into hydrogen (氢)and carbon. Then diamond
rain would form, falling toward the center of the planets.
But no one could prove that this would really work until now. In a study published recently in
the journal Nature Astronomy, scientists say they were able to create this kind of "diamond rain"
in a lab, reported The Guardian.
Scientists used high-powered lasers to create pairs of shockwaves through a kind of plastic.
The plastic is made from hydrogen and carbon, much like methane. The shock waves created high
pressure and heat, like that inside Uranus and Neptune.
"The experimental time is very short, ” Dominik Kraus, lead author of the study, told The
Guardian. "That we saw this very clear signature of diamonds was actually very, very surprising”.
The diamonds created in the lab were tiny, only a few nanometers (纳米) wide. Scientists
believe that diamonds would be much larger within Neptune and Uranus. Then they might slowly
sink toward the planets center because of gravity.
27. What factor is needed to form diamonds?
A. Extreme heat and pressure B. Hydrogen and carbon
C. lcy water and gases D. High-powered lasers
28. What does the underlined word mean in the last paragraph?
A. Unsuccessful B. Small C. Real D. Natural
29. How did scientists prove the theory of forming diamond?
A. By giving examples B. By stating argument
C. By explaining statistical data D. By doing experiments
30. What can be inferred from the text?
A. There are many high-powered lasers in Neptune and Uranus.
B. Deep inside Neptune and Uranus could be full of diamonds.
C. The shock waves inside Neptune and Uranus create high pressure and heat.D. Scientists long believe that there are diamonds inside Neptune and Uranus.
【语篇解读】这是一篇说明文。我们的太阳系可能比我们想象的更疯狂。科学家通过做实
验来证明形成钻石的原理。他们说在海王星和天王星的深处可能充满了钻石。
【27 题详解】A 细节理解题。根据第二段第一句 “On the Earth, diamonds form under
extreme heat and pressure.” 可知,形成钻石需要极高的温度和压力。故选 A。
【28 题详解】B 词义猜测题。根据最后一段第一句 “The diamonds created in the lab

第二节 读后续写 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw something in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the
price -five dollars- was far beyond Reuben Earle's means. Five dollars would buy almost a week's
food for his family.
Reuben couldn't ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing
went to her mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to support their five children but
she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop's weathered(风化的) door and went inside. Standing proud
and straight in his flour-sack shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted,
adding, “But I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”
“I'll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don't usually have that kind of money
to spend on things. It should keep for a while.”
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out.
He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised
when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben
suddenly had an idea. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails purchased in sacks
from a local factory. Sometimes the used sacks were thrown away at the construction site, and
Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he found two sacks, which he sold to the man in charge of packing nails and hid the
money in a rusty soda tin.

Paragraph 1:
Every day after school, Reuben started his plan. Cold and hungry, he wandered the
streets, searching for the nail bags carefully. To save more money, he even decided to deliver
papers in the early morning. It was the brooch in the shop window that reminded him that
what he did was worthwhile.Paragraph 2:
Finally the time came! He took out the soda tin, poured the coins out and began to count.
Five dollars! His hard work paid off. Holding the soda tin firmly, Reuben rushed for the
