Right now she is probably writing an encouraging note to a friend, praising someone she has come across in the hallway, or reading the newspaper to someone in her retirement community. Growing up, my mother thought about becoming a dancer, but she didn’t have the chance until retirement. Then she joined her first group, The Hot Flashes. Once she put on the tap shoes, “Dancing 2 Grammy” was born. There seems to be no end to her energy as she tap-dances her way into people’s hearts, bringing smiles to sad places. But this is nothing new for my mother. Being a lifetime educator, she was recognized in 2015 as her school district’s Teacher of the Year. I remember her evening phone calls to her students’ homes when she took a break from grading papers. They weren’t the typical bad-news calls many parents would expect. Usually she was calling about something positive. I was the youngest of seven children and life wasn’t easy for my mother. I remember sitting on the back of her bike as she took me to a daycare center for low-income families on her way to Rosary College, where she was seeking an education degree. At home she was tough as she had to be. She had been strict in my childhood, but I learned from watching her. Her work ethic(道德)and determination passed down to me. I could write a book about my mother, and probably I will someday. Better yet, we may write one together, as her dream to be a writer hasn’t yet been realized. But she got one step closer by attending the Erma Bombeek Writers’ Workshop in Dayton, Ohio, where she was inspired to write a book. From mother of seven to grandmother of eighteen, my mother continues to inspire everyone she meets. She has many titles, but my favorite is Mother. 4. What does the author’s mother tend to do? A. She often helps poor people. B. She changes her aims constantly. C. She joins energetic people. D. She brings happiness to others. 5. Why did the author’s mother often make calls to her students’ homes? A. To know her students’ performance at home. B. To help her students’ parents build confidence. C. To tell her students’ parents some good news. D. To ask her students to grade their papers fast. 6. How was the author’s childhood? A. Dull but smooth. B. Difficult but rewarding. C. Relaxing and enjoyable. D. Rough and meaningless. 7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text? A. To show her love and respect for her mother. B. To keep a record of her mother’s retirement life. C. To find inspiration to write a book for her mother. D. To praise her mother’s professional achievements. C Plastic is piling up in ecosystems all over the world, not just oceans and lakes. Its harmful effects on wildlife have been widely documented, but a few animals—like bowerbirds and hermit crabs—are doing what they can to recycle it. And according to a study, wild bees in Canada have joined the effort. These tiny insects can’t recycle nearly enough plastic to put a significant dent ( 印 痕 ) in the problem. Still, their resourceful use of plastic indicates how widespread plastic pollution has become, and how some wildlife is adapting to it. One of the bees they studied, the alfalfa leafcutter, normally bites off pieces of leaves and flowers to make its nests. But the researchers found that three of eight brood (幼卵) cells contained pieces of plastic bags, replacing 23 percent of the cut leaves in each cell on average. In a separate study conducted in Argentina between 2017 and 2018, researchers found a nest made entirely of plastic which is the first known example of such construction worldwide. Plastic can have both advantages and disadvantages in bees’ nests, the study suggests. The bees that used bits of plastic bags didn’t suffer any parasite( 寄 生 虫 ) outbreaks, which were unable to sting 3 through the plastic, but up to 90 percent of their brood still died because the plastic didn’t let enough dampness escape, encouraging the growth of dangerous viruses. The plastic bags also didn’t stick together as well as leaves do, the researchers note, and easily fell when they were inspected. But the bees took steps to minimize this deficiency, putting plastic pieces only near the end of a series of brood cells. It’s still unclear why exactly leafcutter bees are using plastic, but as non-biodegradable materials continue piling up in nature, this kind of behavior could become increasingly important. “Although perhaps incidentally collected,” the researchers write, “the novel use of plastics in the nests of bees could reflect ecologically adaptive characteristics necessary for survival in an increasingly human-dominated environment.” 8. What do researchers discover about the bees? A. They are much cleverer than other insects. B. They can use bits of plastic to build nests. C. They are in great danger of extinction. D. They can be used to solve plastic pollution problem. 9. What might the underlined word “deficiency” in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Drawback. B. Concept. C. Size. D. Nest. 10. Where is this text most likely from? A. A biography. B. A guidebook. C. A science fiction. D. A magazine. 11. What is the text mainly about? A. The reason for bees using plastic. B. Researchers’ plan to learn from bees. C. Bees’ adapting to the plastic pollution. D. Bees’ increasing importance in nature. D If one more person talks about the benefits of mindfulness, I will throw cabbage at them. Just kidding. But I do have lots of cabbage, happily rotting away in my kitchen thanks to the wellness obsession ( 着 迷 ) that failed to keep my attention. This is a symptom of a phenomenon known as “wellness tiredness”. Wellness is seriously big business with a worth of $3.72 trillion and a healthy annual growth of 14 percent. To satisfy this consuming desire, brands of super foods and various exercise classes crowd in. “The problem with all this constantly changing information on what to eat or which exercise class to take is that people begin to form distorted (扭曲的) mindsets towards the idea of a healthy lifestyle,” explains Dr Bijal, a psychologist at Nightingale Hospital. “The least harmful result of a distorted mindset will be confusion. The most harmful would be serious physical and mental disorders like extreme dieting or over-exercising.” It’s little wonder that many people are beginning to reject the idea of wellness and the lifestyle it advocates. “I can’t tell you the number of wellness accounts I’ve unfollowed on Instagram,” one fitness-enthusiast friend tells me. When I ask her why, she tells me that the public pursuit of wellness has reached “the eye-roll stage”. Meanwhile, sales of fitness trackers and wearable wellness things have dropped sharply. Speaking of gym culture, which offers classes like Hula Hoop and Yoga, it’s also beginning to show signs that people are returning to more conventional forms of exercise-some that wouldn’t look out of place on a school timetable. The whole point of wellness is that it should become such an everyday thing that you forget about seeking it. Living a healthy lifestyle becomes a given rather than something singled out as impressive and worth applauding. Now, more people are starting to cycle to and from work, swim on lunch breaks and even try to buy old school exercise bikes. 12. What is the main idea of paragraph 2? 4 A. The wellness business costs people a great deal of money. B. People are faced with too many food and exercise choices. C. Distorted mindsets to wellness cause harmful consequences. D. The wellness industry has been developing at a steady speed. 13. Why is the author’s friend mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To inform us wearable wellness things are not popular. B. To advocate the idea of wellness and a healthy lifestyle. C. To tell us that online wellness accounts are hard to follow. D. To show the public’s unfavorable attitude to wellness obsession. 14.Why are people starting to return to traditional forms of exercise? A. Sports such as cycling are more impressive. B. People are treating wellness as an everyday thing. C. Classes like Hula Hoop and Yoga are too expensive. D. People have come to know wellness is not so necessary. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. The Importance of Living a Healthy Lifestyle B. Are You Suffering from Wellness Tiredness? C. The Benefits of Mindfulness in Wellness Industry D. What Is the Real Meaning of Wellness Obsession? 第二部分 语言运用(共两节, 满分 30 分) 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 1 分, 满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文, 从每题所给的 ABCD 四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 California will be the first state to ban the sale and manufacture of new fur products. 16 It will go into effect on January 1, 2023. California’s fur law was one of several bills designed to prevent cruelty to animals. “California is a leader when it comes to animal protection and today that leadership includes banning the sale of fur, ” said Governor Newsom in a news report. “ 17 We are making a statement to the world that beautiful wild animals like bears and tigers have no place on trapeze ( 高空秋千) wires or jumping through flames.” 18 More than a dozen European countries, including the United Kingdom, Austria, Norway and the Netherlands have also passed laws to limit the fur trade. 19 “The signing of the ban shows the point that today’s customers simply don’t want wild animals to suffer extreme pain and fear while keeping up with the fashion,” said Kitty Block, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States and president of Humane Society International. Not everyone, however, was pleased with the ban. Banning the killing of animals for their fur means killing the fur business, says Hyatt, an owner of a fur store. 20 Many retailers are also ending fur sales. In mid-October, Macy’s (American’s department store) announced it will stop fur from all its stores by the end of 2020. The stores will also close all fur vaults and salons. Other fashion brands such as Prada, Gucci, Michael Kors and Burberry have taken similar steps in recent years. A. But we are doing more than that. B. California is taking the lead in protecting animals. C. Similar laws have been carried out globally already. D. And that in turn will leave many people unemployed. E. Two other California cities had already banned fur sales. F. Not surprisingly, the ban is welcomed by animal rights activists. G. The ban applies to clothing, shoes, handbags and other things that contain fur. 第二部分语言运用 (共两节,满分 30 分)5 第一节(共 15 小题:每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Noah had never once been on his family’s back porch(门廊). He threw rocks at them and even shot at them with a shotgun. At least that's what we had heard. His small farm bordered our neighborhood where my younger sister, Leigh Ann, and I lived when we were growing up. His farm was long, narrow, and quaint. It held two treasures. One was his beautiful fruit. There were many varieties of fruit: pears, apples, and lots more I just can't think of. The fruit naturally drew the children to his land. It made them into thieves. But my sister and I didn't dare to take his fruit because of the horrible rumors we had heard about Old Man Donovan. One summer day, we were playing in a nearby field. It was time to head back home. My sister and I were feeling very daring that day. There was a short cut to our house that went through the Donovan farm. We thought he wouldn't be able to see us run across his property around the luscious(可 口味美的) fruit trees. We were almost through the farm when we heard, “Hey,girls!” in a gruff (粗哑 的), low voice. We stopped dead in our tracks! There we were, face to face with Old Man Donovan. Our knees were shaking. We had visions of rocks pounding our bodies and bullets piercing our hearts. “Come here,” he said, reaching up to one of his apple trees. Still shaking, we went over to him. He held out several ripe, juicy, red apples. “Take these home,” he commanded .We took the apples with surprised hearts and ran all the way home. Of course, Leigh Annand I ate the apples. As time went on, we often went through Old Man Donovan’s farm, and he kept on giving us more luscious fruit. One day, we stopped by to see him when he was on his front porch (门廊). We talked to him for hours. While he was talking, we realized that we had found the other hidden treasure: the sweet, kind heart hidden behind his gruff voice. Soon, he was one of our favorite people to talk to. Paragraph 1: Every summer, we would visit Mr. Donovan and talk to him. __________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The next winter, word got around that Old Man Donovan had died. ____________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ 高三英语三轮拉练四答案及解析7 答案:1-3 BCD 4-7 DCBA 8-11 BADC 12-15 CDBB 16-20 GACFD 21-35 CACBD BDDAA CDBBC 语填:36.it 37. We shared with him our colorful experience at school while he kept giving out his luscious fruits to us as usual. As time went by, we seemed to be more a family than good friends. But one summer, we were informed that he was seriously ill and we were anxious and restless, feeling like sitting on pins and needles. We rushed straight to the hospital to see his health condition. Weak as he was, he comforted us that it wasn’t a big deal. Paragraph 2 The next winter, word got around that Old Man Donovan had died. Hearing the bad news, I felt a lump in my throat, tears welling up in my eyes. The wind whistled through the trees, as if mourning for the death of Donovan. I realized gone were the days when we sat together chatting with each other. However, he left us a hidden treasure-- his kind heart, which shall never die away with the passage of time.
