About three weeks ago, James White was fishing in Bodega Bay, California. Because he
was close to traffic, James left Darby, his 1yearold dog, in his car parked a few meters away.
After a while, James felt something big at the end of his line.
“The only way I think I was able to get the line back is because it was swimming towards
me,” he told the reporter.
At the end of the line was a 6feetlong shark (鲨鱼). Before James could find out what
was happening, the shark bit his leg.
“At once there was blood (血) everywhere,” he said. “The situation was terrible. ”
James shouted for help towards some fishermen a few hundred meters away. But before they
could get to him someone else did—Darby.
Darby jumped to the shark and bit into the shark's gills (腮), but that caused the shark to bite
even deeper into James's leg.
After knowing it didn't work, the dog then bit the shark's tail (尾巴). The shark finally let

In October, I told the eightyearolds about my plan in class. “I'd like all of you to do
some jobs to make some money,” I said. “Then we'll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for
a needy grandmother. ”
Early in the Thanksgiving week, the boys and girls arrived in class with their money. They
had cleaned rooms and washed the dishes.
Then we went to the supermarket to buy everything we needed. As we headed toward the
checkout, Kristine cried, “Flowers!”I said, “You can't eat flowers. ”
“But Mrs Sherlock,” Kristine said, “we want flowers. Let's buy some purple mums (菊
花) as a Thanksgiving gift for the grandmother. She will like them. ”
I agreed. When we arrived at the elderly woman's house, she gave us a warm welcome.
“Thank you for the food and flowers,” she said.
Half an hour later, we returned to the car. The elderly woman waved goodbye. In the car we
could see the kitchen window. We saw her walk past the food, straight (径直) to the flowers. She
put her face in the flowers and smiled widely.
The children were quiet. At that moment, they learned they could make another person's life
better. And I learned something too. Sometimes a person needs some purple flowers on a dark

With more and more cars on the road, the traffic jam will happen. How can we solve the
problem?
We know that the traffic jam happens in many places, especially in big cities. What are the
reasons for the problem? On one hand, some people think that they should have a car when they
have enough money, and then it's easy to go out and they can feel comfortable. On the other
hand, a growing number of people hope to use their cars to show off(炫耀). What's more, years
of research has shown that one of other reasons for the traffic jam is the driving habit. For
example, many young people enjoy driving very fast so that they can feel excited. Most of them
hardly care about the speed(速度) rules.
Many governments are working at how to make the traffic better. In my opinion , the
governments should educate those people who have cars or plan to buy cars, and must make
them know that the traffic jam is very serious. Besides, the governments should set up a much
better traffic system(体系) to solve the traffic problem.
64. What does the underlined word “jam” mean in Chinese?
A. 事故 B. 堵塞 C. 规则 D. 道路
65. Why is the traffic jam getting more and more serious?
A. Because there are not enough ways of transportation(交通方式).
B. Because there are fewer speed rules.
C. Because there are more young people on the road. D. Because there are more and more cars on the road.
66. What should the governments do to make the traffic better?
A. They should educate those people who are young.
B. They should set up a much better traffic system.
C. They shouldn't allow people to buy so many cars.
D. They should ask all the people to take the bus.
67. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Reasons why people want to buy cars.
B. How drivers should drive.
C. The traffic jam, reasons for it and solutions.
D. How to make the traffic better.
D
Every year several thousand people die in the car accidents in Great Britain. And between
one and two hundred thousand people are hurt. There are rules to make the roads safe, but people
do not always obey(遵守) the rules. They are careless. If everybody obeys the rules, the road will
be much safer. How can we make the roads safer?
Remember this rule. In Great Britain traffic keeps to the left. Cars, buses and bikes must all
keep to the left side of the road. In most other countries traffic keeps to the right.
Before crossing the road, stop and look both ways. Look right and left. Then, if you are sure
that the road is clear, it is safe to cross the road. If you see small children or very old people, help
them to cross the road. We must teach our children to cross the road safely. We must always give
them a good example. Small children must not play in the street.
68. If we want to make the roads safer, ____.
A. everybody must be careful and obey the traffic rules
B. traffic should keep to the rightC. don't cross the road too often
D. roads must be clear
69. If you ride a bike in Great Britain, you must ride ____.
A. on the right side of the road
B. on the left side of the road
C. in the middle of the road
D. behind the buses
70. Which is NOT right?
A. Few people die in the traffic accidents in Great Britain.
B. In our country traffic keeps to the right.
C. We should help small children to cross the road safely.
D. Streets are not safe places for play.
71. The underlined part “the road is clear” means that ____.
A. there is no car or bus running
B. the road is very clean
C. the road is not noisy
D. you can see very clearly on the road
72. The safe way to cross the road is to ____.
A. look right
B. look left
C. look both ways, right and left
D. run across the road

A Traffic Accident
Yesterday morning,I saw a terrible traffic accident on Xinhua Street. A girl was waiting to
cross the road while the lights were changing to red. The car behind her didn't stop in time
because the driver was a bit tired. It hit the girl and hurt her badly. Someone called the police and
took the girl to the hospital.
A few minutes later, two policemen came and asked the driver some questions about the
accident. I hope things like this will never happen again.
