I always prided myself on being a wise shopper and having a good nose for bargains. So
when I came across a sporting goods store with a sign “Going Out of Business Sale”, I marched
into the crowded store. Up and down the aisles ( 通 道 ), I wandered, humming to myself and
enjoying the energy and excitement of a sale.
All of a sudden, there, at the back of the store sat a canoe (轻舟) exactly like my husband’s
dream Supremo Numero-Uno,whose picture had been stuck on the bathroom mirror for years. My
heart beat wildly. I pushed my way through the crowds, and nearly fell into the canoe looking for
the price tag. There it was, with the manufacturer’s suggested price at $6,750 plus tax crossed out
and a handwritten TO CLEAR $750 AS IS. Must be a mistake. $6000 off? Salesman. I had to talk
to a salesman. I spotted a young fellow with a “Hi. I’m Mathew”. “Mathew. Tell me about this El
Supremo canoe. What’s wrong with it? Why is it only $750?”
“Oh. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s brand new. We’re closing the store. It’s on clearance
like everything else. I’ll go check.” A few minutes later he came back and said, “I’m sorry ma’am.
Someone made a mistake on the sale tag. It should be $4,750 for the whole package.”
I felt tears well up in my eyes. “Oh well”, I said sadly. “Of course, it was too good to be true.
This is exactly like my husband’s dreamboat. I guess I started to dream myself when I saw that
price tag. He’s going to be 62 years old on Friday. Had to retire early for his health. It’s been hard
on just the pension but the stubborn old fool has been saving $10 every week for years to buy one
just like this. I promise I won’t buy anything, but it’s just an old man’s silly dream, you know.
Always said he wanted to fish in a canoe after he retired,” my voice lowered and I turned and
walked away.

Some people are just bound to be failures. That’s the way some adults look at troublesome
kids. Maybe you’ve heard the saying. “A bird with a broken wing will never fly as high.” I am
sure that T. J. Ware was made to feel this way almost every day at school.
At high school, Ware was the most celebrated troublemaker in his town. Teachers would feel
uneasy when they saw his name posted on the lists for the next term. Ware was moving on, but
certainly not moving up. I met Ware for the first time at a leadership training, a program designed
to have students become more involved in their communities. When I showed up to lead their first
training, the community leaders gave me this overview of the attending students, “We have a total
range of students, from the student body president to T. J. Ware, the boy with the longest arrest
record in the history of town.”
At the beginning of the training, Ware was standing outside of the circle of students, against
the back wall, with that “go ahead, impress me” look on his face. But slowly, the interactive
games drew him in. The ice really melted when the groups started building a list of positive and
negative things that had occurred at school that year. Ware had some definite thoughts on those
situations. The other students in his group welcomed his comments, which made a lot of sense.
The next day, Ware was very active in all the activities. By the end of the training, he had
joined the Homeless Project team. The other students in the team were impressed with his passionate concern and ideas. They elected him chairman of the team. Most teachers strongly
opposed to his being elected chairman, warning the principal that Ware would probably steal half
the food. But the principal reminded them that the purpose of the program was to uncover any
positive passion that a student had and strengthen its practice until true change could take place.
The teachers left the meeting shaking their heads, convinced that failure was approaching.

Tom appeared on the sidewalk with a bucket of whitewash and a long-handled brush. He
stopped at the fence in front of the house where he lived with his Aunt Polly. He looked at it, and
all joy left him. The fence was long and high. He put the brush into the whitewash and moved it along the top of the fence. He repeated the operation. He felt it was difficult for him to continue
and sat down.
He knew that his friends would arrive soon with all kinds of interesting plans for the day.
They would walk past him and laugh. They would make jokes about his work on a beautiful
summer Saturday. The thought burned him like fire.
He put his hands into his pockets and took out all that belonged to him. Perhaps he could find
some way to pay someone to do the whitewashing for him. But there was nothing of value in his
pockets — nothing that could buy even half an hour of freedom. So he put the bits of toys back
into his pockets and gave up the idea.
At this dark and hopeless moment, a wonderful idea came to him. It filled his mind with a
great, bright light. Calmly he picked up the brush and started again to whitewash.
While Tom was working, Ben Rogers appeared. Ben was eating an apple as he walked along
the street. As he walked along, he was making noises like the sound of a riverboat. First he
shouted loudly, like a boat captain. Then he said “Ding-Dong-Dong”, “Ding-Dong-Dong” again
and again, like the bell of a riverboat. And he made other strange noises. When he came close to
Tom, he stopped.
Tom went on whitewashing. He did not look at Ben. Ben stared for a moment and then said,
“Hello! I’m going swimming, but you can’t go, can you?”
No answer. Tom moved his brush carefully along the fence and looked at the result with the
eye of an artist. Ben came nearer. Tom’s mouth watered for the apple, but he kept on working.
Ben said, “Hello, old fellow, you’ve got to work, hey?”
Tom turned suddenly and said, “Why, it’s you, Ben! I wasn’t noticing.”
“Say — I’m going swimming. Don’t you wish you could? But of course you’d rather work
— wouldn’t you? Of course you would.”
Tom looked at the boy a bit, and said, “Why do you call work?”
“Why, isn’t that work?” Tom went back to his whitewashing, and answered carelessly.
“Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t. All I know is, it suits Tom Sawyer.”
“Oh come, now, you don’t mean to say that you like it?” The brush continued to move.
“Like it? Well, I don’t see why I shouldn’t like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a
fence every day?”
Ben stopped eating his apple. Tom moved his brush back and forth, stepped back to look at
the result, added a touch here and there, and stepped back again. Ben watched every move and got
more and more interested. Soon he said, “Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little.”
Tom thought for a moment, was about to agree, but he changed his mind.“No — no — it won’t do, Ben. You see, Aunt Polly wants this fence to be perfect. It has got
to be done very carefully. I don’t think there is one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that
can do it well enough.”
“No — is that so? Oh come, now — let me just try. Only just a little.” “Ben, I’d like to, but if
it isn’t done right, I’m afraid Aunt Polly...”
“Oh, I’ll be careful. Now let me try. Say — I’ll give you the core of my apple.”
“Well, here — No, Ben, now don’t. I’m afraid...”
“I’ll give you all of it.”

Last Sunday afternoon, Sandra and I were eager to meet up with a man on Detroit’s east side
to help him get ready for a job interview this week. But on the way, we spotted a dog lying near
the road next to his owner. We thought he’d been hit by a car. My friend, Sandra, and I had
assisted animal rescue groups before and we thought there might be something we could do, so we
quickly pulled over to help. His owner, a woman told us the dog’s name is Bosco, and she was walking him over a mile
in the heat to her new home. She said Bosco was an outside dog and no one would give him a ride
to her new place. That’s when she and a friend decided to walk the entire way. He was going from
a life on a chain in one backyard to another. She said Bosco was having trouble breathing along
the way, but they thought he could make it. But just a block away from their destination, Bosco
fell down. We could tell he was suffering from heatstroke (中暑). She told us he had thrown up
and could no longer stand. Bosco was out of breath quickly. His drool ( 口 水 ) was also thick.
Bosco’s owner said she wanted to give him away because she didn’t have time for him. She said
he would never be allowed into her new “home” because her children have allergies (过敏症) and
she worried he would dirty the carpet.
I made a call to Kristina Rinaldi of Detroit Dog Rescue to ask if they could help Bosco
because it was clear that he was going to die without emergency care. To our happiness, Rinaldi
said they could help. At once she told the people at Oakland Veterinary Referral Services that a
dog which needed critical care was being rushed in and they must be ready to try their best to save
him.

other people. People have moved me and molded(对……影响重大)me with moments of love
and examples of kindness.
One time on the day before Christmas many years ago when I was a minimum wage mill
worker, I found myself with very little money and very little time to buy my small children a few
simple toys. I knew that they would have to be cheap ones and I hoped my children would like
them. I hated not having enough to give them more. I hated being poor. And I hated feeling bad at
Christmas rather than happy.
I pulled into a store parking lot and counted my money again. It wasn’t much but maybe I
could get something small with it. As I was getting out of the car, I noticed the Salvation Army
(救世军)bell ringer at the entrance. I felt bad again because I didn’t feel I could spare anything
to give him. I started walking towards the entrance when two cars pulled into empty parking spots
in front of me. The first was a shiny, new Cadillac and I felt a twinge of jealousy when I saw it.
“How nice,” I thought, “would it be to have enough money to buy a car like that.” The second car,
though, was an ancient sedan(轿车)more beat-up and rusty than the one I was driving.
A man hopped(冲)out of the Cadillac and hurried into the store right past the bell ringer
without a second glance. Out of the old sedan came a young mother with three small children in
tow(紧随着). Her clothes looked as worn out as her car, yet she stopped in front of the bell
ringer, smiled, opened her purse, and dropped a bill in his red kettle(钱罐).

“My name is Joy, Joy the Jug. Unfortunately, at the moment I am rather joyless. I used to be
beautiful. I was happy on the dining table all the time. But now times have changed.” She sat sad
in the corner of the kitchen cupboard.
“The worst part is the loss of self-esteem. It’s wonderful when you feel useful. They would
use me for sauce, milk, all sorts of different things. I could smell and taste the food. I was part of
the family, I could listen to the conversation, and I knew what was going on.” Joy smiled as she
thought of all the good times she had. But that was a long time ago. Joy cried a few tears.
“And now, I am no good for anything. When Mum was doing the dishes she hit me on the tap.
It really hurt me. There was a big crack right from my top half way down to my base, and all
along the handle. Mum said it would be dangerous to use me. And then she put me in the
cupboard, and that was the end of my life.”
In the cupboard the piles of plates were listening to Joy and felt very embarrassed. They
knew Joy had been a bit miserable, but they hadn’t taken much notice really.
“And then, I got moved further to the back of the cupboard. I haven’t seen the daylight for six
months now. I am just shut away, unwanted. The only people who know I am here are the plates
beside me, but they just ignore me.”
“Well, what do you want us to do?” asked one of the plates. “We can’t get Mum to use you if
you are broken. You really aren’t much useful for anything, are you?”
“No. You are right,” said Joy sadly.
She was quiet for a while, and then she said, “There is one thing you could do. Next time
Mum puts you plates back after a meal, could you move a bit so I can get closer to the edge and
see out?”

With one smooth motion Quentin took the football from the quarterback, held the football
tightly under his arm, and headed for the goal line. When he was less than ten yards away, a player
from the opposing team rushed toward him, hoping to prevent him from scoring. But Quentin did
his trademark “Quentin quick-change” and sidestepped the opponent’s open arms. The crowd
cheered as Quentin crossed the goal line and held the football high up. In the locker room after the
game, the crowd’s cheers were still in Quentin’s ears, taking him back to that victorious moment.
“Nice run, Quentin,” Coach Calzi said, patting him on the back. “It was nothing, Coach,” Quentin
replied. “l could do it without even trying.” The coach looked at Quentin thoughtfully for a
moment and then walked away without saying anything more.
One month after the season ended, Coach Calzi called the team together to begin postseason
training. The coach first described the exercises he wanted everyone to do every day. Then he
gave specific instructions to each player that would help overcome areas of particular weakness.
Quentin knew that he was in excellent physical shape, so he expected that his exercises
would be relatively easy. He was totally unprepared for what the coach said next.
“Quentin,” said Coach Calzi, “I want you to join the debate team.”
“Join the debate team?” Quentin questioned. “I can’t spend all winter arguing different sides
of an issue. Besides, I want to be a professional football player, not a lawyer. Right now I’m the
best halfback on the team. I need to stay in shape!”
“Yes, you are the best, Quentin,” Coach Calzi agreed. “In fact. You’re the best player this
school has seen in many years. But even the best players can learn to be better. I think you will
learn some valuable things about playing football by being on the debate team.”

sitting at the front gate on Friday morning around 10 o’clock so he can be there when my dad and
I come to unload his new canoe. We’ll even put a bow on it for his birthday.” I started to cry. My

Paragraph 2:

Two weeks later, Ware led a group of 70 students to collect more than 2,000 cans of food in
just two hours for the homeless people, which set a new school record. The local newspaper
covered the event with a full-page article the next day, in which Ware’s picture was up for doing
something greater. After that, Ware led a second project, collecting 300 blankets and 1,000 pairs
of shoes for the shelter, and then, a third one. More importantly, all the teachers surprisingly found
that true changes were taking place on Ware at school.
Paragraph 2:
Many years later, Ware graduated from college, and then he opened his own company,
where most workers were local people from his community. He still tries his best to do what he
can for the society. Ware is flying quite nicely these days. From Ware’s story, we firmly believe
that no one is bound to be a failure, and a bird with a broken wing only needs mending, and once
it has healed, it can fly higher than the rest.

Tom gave up the brush with unwillingness on his face, but joy in his heart. And while Ben
worked at the fence in the hot sun, Tom sat under a tree, eating the apple, and planning how to get

time Ben was tired, Tom sold the next chance to Billy for a kite; and when Billy was tired, Johnny

Tom had won many treasures.
Paragraph 2:
And he had not worked. He had had a nice idle time all the time, with plenty of company —
and the fence had been whitewashed three times. If he hadn’t run out of whitewash, Tom would
have owned everything belonging to his friends. He had discovered a great law of human action,
namely, that in order to make a man or a boy want a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing
difficult to get.D

Paragraph 2:
So Bosco is now being called Roscoe, whose critical care and recovery were estimated to be

Quentin went to the debate team meeting the following Monday. As the team worked on its
debate, Quentin found that his team needed to listen carefully, identify any weaknesses, and then
argue against them in a convincing manner when the other team presented its position. He also
noticed that team members worked together to develop a strategy for responding to their
opponents in the same way the football team prepared for a big game.
Paragraph 2:
By the end of the semester, Quentin had helped his team advance to the championship
tournament. During the finals the opposing team had been quite persuasive in presenting their
position. When it was Quentin’s turn, instead of presenting the response his team had prepared, he
suddenly thought of a more effective way. It was like the “Quentin quick-change” of the football
field. His alertness and reactive strategy helped his debate team win the championship.
