Stanley Martin Lieber was born in Manhattan, NY on December 28, 1922.Upon graduating from De Witt
Clinton High School, the 16-year-old boy was hired at what was then called Timely Comics. The company was
best known for inexpensive fiction, or magazines. In 1941, when given his first chance to author a story—a short
text for Captain America, he signed his name as “Stan Lee”. However, the pseudonym stuck, and soon after,
became his legal name.
Promoted to the editor of the comic book division at the age of 19, Lee spent the next decade writing a variety
of styles. In the late 1950s, knowing his common writing career, Lee was considering leaving when he was asked to
create a superhero character to compete with DC Comics’ successful Justice League.
Lee partnered Jack Kirby to launch the Fantastic Four. The comic book was an instant hit, leading to the
development of other superhero characters such as Iron Man, and Spider-man. Unlike previous superheroes who
were described as perfect, Lee’s creations were provided with human faults, thus making them more related to fans.
In 1972, Lee, by then the publisher of marvel, gave up editorial control to spend time promoting the company.
While television shows featuring Marvel characters like Spider-Man and the Hulk did well, achieving success on
the big screen proved difficult. It was not until 2000 with the release of The X-man, starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick
Stewart, lan Mekellen, and Halle Berry, that Marvels superheroes became a hit on the big screen. This was also the
first time Lee had began the much- -loved tradition of making cameo (客串演出) appearances in the movies. In
2009, the Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel and lifted up the superhero world further with summer
blockbusters like The Avengers.
Though Lee is no longer with us, his larger-than-life personality, fun-loving wit, and charm will be
remembered for generations to come.
24. Which word can replace the underlined word “pseudonym” in Paragraph 1?
A. Pen name. B. Fiction. C. Text. D. Company.
25. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. All the superheroes Lee created were perfect.
B. Lee was asked to cooperate with Justice league.
C. Marvel was bought by Walt Disney Company in 2009.
D. The comic book Fantastic Four was a complete failure.
26. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. The success of Stanley Martin s comic books.
B. Stanley Martins first appearance in the movies.C. Stanley Martins decision to create his own company.
D. Stanley Martin s devotion to moving his company to a higher rank.
27. Where is this passage most likely from?
A. a biography. B. A diary. C. A guide book. D. A book review.

One sheep, two sheep. Wait, why are we counting sheep again? Counting sheep to fall asleep is a method that
seems to be as old as time. But have you ever stopped to think about why they’re sheep? Why not cats? Or dogs?
While the origin of why people count sheep to fall asleep has no exact root, there’re a few guesses. The most
popular belief, according to Mental Floss, has to do with shepherds in Britain in Middle Ages. Apparently, if
shepherds used communal grazing land (公共牧场), they were responsible to keep a headcount of their sheep each
night So before going to sleep, they counted their sheep to ensure they were all accounted for.
But at least one book claims the link between sheep and sleep goes back even further, reports Mental Floss.
“A chapter in Disciplina Clericalis suggests that counting sheep has already been part of certain cultures for
centuries.”
So does counting sheep to fall asleep actually work? Apparently, you might want to seek other options first.
“Involving the brain in a relaxing, repetitive task slows the mind, and stops our racing stressful thoughts from
taking over,” says Hilary Thompson, a health consultant. “Unfortunately, counting sheep isn’t one of these helpful
tasks. Researchers at Oxford University put it to the test and discovered that subjects who pictured running
waterfalls and rivers could fall asleep more quickly.”
In addition to picturing something relaxing, breathing techniques also tend to be very effective sleeping aids.
“I prefer to teach patients the breath work,” says Dr Elizabeth Trattner. “Breath in through the nose for a count of 4,
hold for 7 and make a whooshing noise out for the count of 8. This breathing technique resets the body, and lowers
both stress and anxiety.”
28. Before going to bed, why did shepherds count sheep?
A. To learn to count numbers.
B. To help fall asleep quickly.
C. To make all sheep were there.
D. To play games with other shepherds.
29. What can be inferred from the book Disciplina Clericalis?
A. Counting sheep has a long history.
B. The book was written for a long time.C. Counting sheep was quite interesting.
D. The book describes life of shepherds.
30. What is Hilary Thompson’s view on counting sheep?
A. It is helpful to sleep. B. It doesn’t work very well.
C. It increases sleep time. D. It makes mind relaxing.
31. What is the best way to fall asleep quickly by Elizabeth Trattner?
A. Listening to soft music. B. Picturing water running.
C. Imagining relaxing things. D. Applying breathing techniques.
D
As we live longer and technology continues its rapid development, we can imagine a future where machines
will enlarge our human abilities and help us make better life choices, from health to wealth. Through our dialogue
and digital pieces, AI will understand our life goals and wishes, our duties and limitations. It will help us plan
different life events, so we can spend more time enjoying life’s moments.
The ability for artificial intelligence to understand the complexities and slight differences of human
conversation is, however, one hurdle. There are several thousand known living languages in the world today.
Adding to the difficulties are the varied ways words are shared and used across different cultures, including
grammar, levels of education and styles of the speakers. Google Duplex, the technology supporting Google
Assistant, which places phone calls using a natural-sounding human voice instead of a robotic one, is an early
attempt to address such challenges in human communications. But these are just initial whispers in voice of AI’s
long journey.
Beyond making reservations and conducting simple dialogues, virtual assistants will need to become far more
useful and further fit into the parts of our everyday lives. Not only will they need to foresee what we need before
we ask, they also need to understand the context of our conversations and react accordingly. Imagine a snow day
when school is canceled for the kids. Knowing that you must now stay at home with your children, your phone
would remind you, asking if you’d like your meetings moved to the following day. Alternatively, imagine how
much more pleasant your journey home from a business trip would be if your phone could automatically arrange
for a ride waiting to pick you up at the airport, based on your travel plan, location, and habits. The possibilities are
endless.
32. What do we know about AI?
A. They narrow our abilities. B. They limit our better choice.
C. They don’t know our limitations. D. They help us enjoy life better.33. What makes it hard for AI to understand what humans say?
A. Low level of speakers. B. Imperfection of AI.
C. Varieties of languages and cultures. D. Similarities between languages.
34. Which word can best describe the author’s attitude towards AI?
A. Doubtful. B. Approving. C. Negative. D. Critical.
35. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A AI Will Replace Humans
B. AI Will Set Goals for Us.
C. AI Will Be Part of Our Daily Lives.
D. AI Will Meet Challenges.

● Buy products that are wildlife-friendly. 39 Keep in mind that some endangered animals are killed
by traps, catches or hunters who are after other wildlife within the same habitat.

New research suggests that our DNA helps us to decide whether we prefer coffee or tea. Researchers from the

believe they know why some of us prefer coffee 61 others like tea more. The researchers found that people
who like bitter tastes are more likely 62 (drink) coffee. The researchers said they found something 63
was quite strange in the research. People who are more 64 (sense) to the bitter taste of caffeine prefer
coffee to tea. The finding is consistent with several previous 65 (study).
Researchers looked at data on more than 400,000 men and women in the United Kingdom. They also looked
at 66 Australian study that compared the tastes of 1,757 twins with their siblings. I he researchers said
genes aren’t the only factors: 67 (affect) people’s tastes. Other things 68 our changing
environment, social factors or the effects of taking medicine can also turn us on or off coffee or tea. The researchers
