A. introduce the four books to readers B. help children to learn English C. provide the four books to students D. enrich students’ knowledge about nature B Why elephants rarely get cancer is a mystery that has confused scientists for decades. A study was led by researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute(HCI) at the University of Utah and Arizona State University, including researchers from the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation 高三英语期初卷(第 6 页 共 11 页) may have found the answer. According to the results, elephants have 38 additional modified copies of a gene that encodes p53, a well-defined tumor(肿瘤) suppressor, as compared to humans, who have only two. Further, elephants may have a more powerful mechanism for killing damaged cells that are at risk for becoming cancerous. In isolated elephant cells, this activity is doubled compared to healthy human cells, and five times that of cells from patients with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, who have only one working copy of p53 and more than a 90 percent lifetime cancer risk in children and adults. The results suggest extra p53 could explain elephants’ increased resistance to cancer. “Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer. It’s up to us to learn how different animals overcome the problem so we can adopt those strategies to prevent cancer in people,” says co-senior author Joshua Schiffman, M. D., pediatric oncologist(肿瘤学家) at Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah School of Medicine, and Primary Children’s Hospital. According to Schiffman, elephants have long been considered a walking problem. Because they have 100 times as many cells as people, they should be 100 times more likely to have a cell slip into a cancerous state and cause the disease over their long life span of 50 to 70 years. And yet it’s believed that elephants get cancer less often, a theory confirmed in this study. Analysis of a large database of elephant deaths estimates a cancer death rate of less than 5 percent compared to 11 to 25 percent in people. 24. Why do humans often get cancer compared to elephants according to the passage? A. Elephants are bigger than humans. B. Elephants have more p53 than humans. C. Elephants are not as clever as humans. D. Elephants eat more than humans. 25. Which of the following is right according to the passage? A. Some damaged cells may be dangerous. B. Some damaged cells are not dangerous. C. Some damaged cells can’t be cancerous. D. Some damaged cells in elephants’ bodies are more dangerous than those in humans’ bodies. 26. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. Elephants have more cells than people. B. Elephants can get cancer easily. C. Elephants seldom die from cancer. D. Elephants often die from cancer. 27. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?高三英语期初卷(第 7 页 共 11 页) A. Elephants help us B. Learn from Nature C. How to deal with cancer D. Nature helps us prevent cancer C One evening in February 2007, a student named Paula Ceely brought her car to a stop on a remote road in Wales. She got out to open a metal gate that blocked her path. That’s when she heard the whistle sounded by the driver of a train. Her Renault Clio was parked across a railway line. Seconds later, she watched the train drag her car almost a kilometre down the railway tracks. Ceely’s near miss made the news because she blamed it on her GPS. She had never driven the route before. It was dark and raining heavily. Ceely was relying on her GPS, but it made no mention of the crossing. “I put my complete trust in the device and it led me right into the path of a speeding train,” she told the BBC. Who is to blame here? Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceely’s story in his book When Machines Fail Us, points the finger at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices, he says, but our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are filled with small problems. And it’s not just GPS devices: Stevenson takes us on a tour of digital disasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless keyboards. The problem with his argument in the book is that it’s not clear why he only focuses on digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes. A map-maker might have left the crossing off a paper map. Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention. Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault for the poor signaling system. Or maybe someone has studied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with the GPS equipment. But Stevenson doesn’t say. It’s a problem that runs through the book. In a section on cars, Stevenson gives an account of the advanced techniques that criminals use to defeat computer-based locking systems for cars. He offers two independent sets of figures on car theft; both show a small rise in some parts of the country. He says that once again not all new locks have proved reliable. Perhaps, but maybe it’s also due to the shortage of policemen on the streets. Or changing social circumstances. Or some combination of these factors. The game between humans and their smart devices is amusing and complex. It is shaped by economics and psychology and the cultures we live in. Somewhere in the mix of those forces there may be a way for a wiser use of technology. If there is such a way, it should involve more than just an awareness of the shortcomings of our machines. After all, we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably been fooling us for just as long. 28. What did Paula Ceely think was the cause of her accident?高三英语期初卷(第 8 页 共 11 页) A. She was not familiar with the road. B. It was dark and raining heavily then. C. The railway workers failed to give the signal. D. Her GPS device didn’t tell her about the crossing. 29. The phrase “near miss” (Paragraph 2) can best be replaced by _______. A. close hit B. heavy loss C. narrow escape D. big mistake 30. Which of the following would Rick Stevenson most probably agree with? A. Modern technology is what we can’t live without. B. Digital technology often falls short of our expectation. C. Digital devices are more reliable than they used to be. D. GPS error is not the only cause for Ceely’s accident. 31. In the writer’s opinion, Stevenson’s argument is _______. A. one-sided B. reasonable C. puzzling D. well-based D September is an exciting month in every college freshman’s life. For many, it’s the first time that they’ve left home to live in a new environment. But after the hustle and bustle of a few weeks, excitement gives way to a less enjoyable emotion--homesickness. Homesickness manifests itself in many ways. You may miss mum’s cooking, your pets, or even your old bed. All this becomes a fond memory of the past. Homesickness can be a bitter feeling for many students, especially when faced with the challenges of settling into an unfamiliar environment. But remember, you’re not alone. According to a recent BBC article, 70 percent of British college students experience homesickness. In this increasingly globalized world in which people migrate to faraway places for a relationship, education or work, homesickness is a feeling shared by many adults. Homesickness can have similar symptoms to depression and in extreme cases it can develop into a panic attack. As for the term, homesickness or nostalgia wasn’t invented until the 17th century. It was considered a disorder by a Swiss physician, who attributed soldiers’ mental and 高三英语期初卷(第 9 页 共 11 页) physical discomfort to their longing to return home, “nostos” from Greek, and the accompanying pain, “algos”. Studies in recent years, however, have shown that nostalgia may have some benefits to our mental health. After a decade of surveys and researches, Constantine Sedikides, a US social psychologist, found that nostalgia is what makes us human. He explains that nostalgia can resist loneliness, boredom and anxiety. Therefore, it’s necessary for college students to learn some ways to overcome the uncomfortable feeling. 32. From the first two paragraphs, we can infer that _______. A. homesickness means a fond memory of the past B. only a few students will experience homesickness C. homesickness is an enjoyable emotion among freshmen D. college freshmen usually suffer from homesickness after weeks 33. He looked about him and found near him was a gypsy sitting on a bucket turned upside down. A fire of sticks was burning near by, and over the fire hung an iron pot, and out of that pot came smells—warm, rich, and varied smells--that twined(缠绕) and twisted and wreathed(环绕) themselves at last into one complete, voluptuous(丰 富的), perfect smell. Toad now knew well that he had not been really hungry before. Presently the gipsy remarked in a careless way, “Want to sell that horse of yours?” Toad was completely taken aback. It had not occurred to him to turn the horse into cash, but the gipsy’s suggestion seemed to smooth the way towards the two things he wanted so badly--ready money, and a solid breakfast. “What?” he said, “How much might you be disposed to offer me for this beautiful young horse of mine?” “A shilling(先令 1) a leg,” the gipsy said briefly, and turned away. Toad climbed down off his horse, and left it to graze(吃草), and sat down by the gipsy, and did sums on his fingers, and at last he said, “A shilling a leg? Why, that comes to exactly four shillings, and no more. O, no; I could not think of accepting four shillings for this beautiful young horse of mine.” “Well,” said the gipsy, “I’ll tell you what I will do. I’ll make it five shillings, and that’s three- and-sixpence more than the animal’s worth. And that’s my last word.” Then Toad pondered(沉思) long and deeply. For he was hungry and quite penniless, and still some way--he knew not how far--from home, and enemies might still be looking for him. To one in such a situation, five shillings may very well appear a large sum of money. On the other hand, 1 shilling 先令:a British coin in use until 1971, worth 12 old pence. There were 20 shillings in one pound. 先 令(英国 1971 年以前货币单位,一先令值 12 旧便士,20 先令合一英镑)高三英语期初卷(第 16 页 共 11 页) it did not seem very much to get for a horse. At last he said firmly, “Look here, gipsy! I tell you what we will do; and this is MY last word. You shall hand me over six shillings and sixpence; and in addition, you shall give me as much breakfast as I can possibly eat, at one sitting of course, out of that iron pot of yours that keeps sending forth such delicious and exciting smells. In return, I will make over to you my spirited young horse, with all the beautiful harness( 挽 具 ) and trappings( 马饰) that are on him, freely thrown in. But in the end he counted out six shillings and sixpence into Toad’s paw. Then he fetched a large iron plate and a knife, fork, and spoon. Some hot stew from the pot was poured into the plate. Toad took the plate on his lap, almost crying, and stuffed, and stuffed, and stuffed, and kept asking for more. He thought that he had never eaten so good a breakfast in all his life. When Toad had taken as much stew on board as he thought he could possibly hold, he got up and said good-bye to the gipsy, and took an affectionate farewell of the horse; and the gipsy gave him directions which way to go, and he set forth in the best possible spirits. The sun was shining brightly, he had money in his pocket once more, he was nearing home and friends and safety, and, most and best of all, he had had a substantial meal, hot and nourishing, and felt big, and strong, and careless, and self-confident. Do you know any special ways to listen to lectures better?高三英语期初卷(第 19 页 共 11 页) W: Well, I like to take notes. But if the topic is difficult, I often record the whole thing. Please come to get it back in the classroom. Or I just leave it in the teachers’ office in Room 201, if you don’t have time now. M: Oh. That’s great, Katie! I have been looking for it all day long. I’ll go to get it tomorrow morning. Text 4 M: I find there are plenty of classical music CDs on the Internet. You can buy them very cheaply if you like them. W: Great. Text 5 M: You really have a lot of hobbies, Sarah. How do you find time to keep up with all of them? W: That’s the nice thing about being retired.
