From his home in Troy, Kansas, Dennis Ruhnke watched images of New York hospitals crowded with
coronavirus patients, and knew he had to do something to help with the epidemic. A retired farmer, Ruhnke had an
unused N95 face mask, which he sent to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo along with a note asking Cuomo to
please pass the mask to a doctor or nurse. “I think a medical worker deserves it more than I,” said Dennis. He never
expected Cuomo to even read the letter, let alone share it during one of his daily news conference.
His act of kindness inspired local officials and a neighbor to try to realize one of Ruhnke’s dreams: receiving
his college diploma. In 1971, Ruhnke was just two credits shy of earning his degree in agriculture from Kansas
State University when he had to drop out. His father had died, and he needed to look after his mother and take over
the family farm. Ruhnke always thought about going back, but by the time he approached the school, he was told

If you’ve ever passed the cockpit(驾驶舱)while boarding a flight and tried to pick up bits from your pilots’
conversation, you probably didn’t understand much of them. Do they want to keep something in the dark? For
terms like “niner” to “Zulu”, pilot-speak may sound like all Greek to you. But in this way, what happens to pilots
can be expressed clearly and briefly. That’s why it is well-recognized in this industry.
Pan-pan. Airline passengers likely won’t ever hear their pilot use this term, which is reserved for
communication with air traffic controllers. When pilots notice something unusual with their aircraft that stops short
of an immediate emergency, they use “pan-pan”. For example, if one of a multi-engine aircraft’s engine has failed,
pilots might say “pan-pan” to get controllers’ attention and request an emergency landing.
George is flying the plane now. There is a “George” on nearly every commercial aircraft. Pilots often allocate
George to command the plane when it reaches cruising(巡航)altitude or when they’ve flown for more than 10 hours,
when they’re required to rest according to rules for two-pilot planes.

W: Have you decided on whether you are going to apply for the job in the marketing department?
M: I don’t think I am going to apply for it because the position doesn’t pay as much as I’ve thought.
W: That’s true but there is a great chance for a quick promotion there. In a couple of years you’ll be in much better
situation.
M: Hmm ... I think you have a point there. Maybe I should try to see if I can get the position first. After all, I might
not even be considered for it.

M: How are your new neighbours, Susan?
W: They seem nice enough, but their son is driving me crazy.
M: What do you mean?
W: He comes home every night around 10 with his car radio on loudly. It stops as soon as he turns the car off. But
by then my kids are wide awake.
M: Oh, no.
W: Sometimes it takes us till midnight just to get them to settle down again.
M: Have you tried talking to them?
W: We haven’t even really met them yet except to say a quick hello. And ... um ... I feel stupid complaining.
M: You said it was driving you crazy.
W: Well, I’m just not getting enough sleep and neither are the kids.
M: Maybe you could go over sometime with a little gift: a plant for the yard or something. Then you could talk
about your trouble with them.

W: How was your winter sports trip?
M: It was OK. We went to a different holiday centre this time. There wasn’t as much snow as expected, but there
was still enough to try snowboarding!
W: So was it the first time you’d done it?
M: Mmm, but my older brother had been before, so he hired some equipment for me and we went up the
snow-covered hill. I was soon doing a few jumps and things.
W: Great!
M: One thing I found, though, was that my skating really helped me to balance.
W: And did you wear a helmet and so on, to protect yourself? My mum always reminded me to care about things
like that. You know, the professionals all wear the right equipment to avoid getting hurt.
M: Talking of professionals, I saw one doing some amazing snowboarding moves at a show there. Other people
who weren’t really skilled enough were copying him. I wouldn’t try it — I’m happy just doing the things I can do!
W: Will you go skiing or snowboarding next holiday?
M: Well, the snowboarding was certainly great fun! I’ve reached a good level in skiing, though, and I want to keep
it up. So if there’s snow, I’d rather do that than anything else.

M: Sylvia Earle is an underwater explorer who was born in the USA in 1953. She became interested in the world’s
oceans from an early age. When she was 16, she finally got a chance to make her first dive. It was this dive that
inspired her to become an underwater explorer. She has also made the deepest dive ever, reaching a
record-breaking depth of 381 meters. In 1970, she became famous around the world when she became the captain
of the first all-female team to live underwater. The team spent two weeks in an underwater “house”. The research
they carried out showed the damage that pollution was causing to ocean life. Her team also studied the problem of
overfishing. Since then she has written several books and magazine articles in which she suggests ways of reducing
the damage that is being done to the world’s oceans. One way, she believes, is to rely on fish farms for seafood, and
reduce the amount of fishing that is done out at sea. Although she no longer eats seafood herself, she realizes the
importance it plays in our diets. It would be wrong to tell people they should stop eating fish, she says.
