But they can be good for another type of transportation: walking! In Zimbabwe, and in many other countries, old tires are not thrown away. Instead, craftsmen cut them up and make them into sandals ( 凉 鞋 ). One of these craftsmen is Casper Mamutse, who runs a small sandal-making business just outside his house. When Casper first saw a man named Isaac wearing tire sandals, he thought they looked funny. So he asked Issac where he got them. Issac said he had made them himself. Casper decided to buy a pair to make his friends laugh. But his friends didn’t laugh, instead they wanted their own. “Finally, I asked him to teach me how to make tire sandals,” says Casper. For more than six months, Casper learned how to cut and shape soles (鞋底) from tires. To make the right size, Casper traces a shoe sole on the tire and cuts out a sole. “Cutting a tire with a knife requires as much brains as strength,” he says. “You have to use a lot of power and concentration or else you will cut your finger along with the tire.” After the sole is cut, Casper tears off the soft inside part of the tire and cut it into strips (带状物). He attaches the strips to the sole for “belts”. From one tire, Casper can make about four pairs of sandals for adults or about six pairs for kids. The Zimbabwe countryside is full of sharp stones. Unless you have thick soles, your shoes can be easily pierced (刺穿). But strong boots are expensive, and many people walk barefoot. But now they can get tire sandals, which are strong enough and much less expensive than leather shoes. Fedzai, a 10-year-old boy, thinks that what his friends need now are not cars to take them to school, but shoes. “Going to school on foot instead of in a car does not bother me very much,” he says. “After all, we are still moving on tires.” 21. He occasionally sang with bands in the past. When he was diagnosed (诊断) with Parkinson’s disease two years ago, he remembered that his father, who’d also had the condition, lost his ability to sing as the disease progressed. Hoping to prevent a similar fate, Stephen joined ParkinSong last year, a local group of Parkinson’s patients who meet monthly with a music therapist (治疗学家). They sing together and learn skills to help preserve their singing and speaking voices. “The session involves vocal exercises, breathing exercises, correct posture and that sort of thing,” he says. “Our vocal cords (声带) are like any other muscle in our body. If you don’t use it, you lose it.” Helping Parkinson’s patients maintain their voices is just one way that music therapy benefits people. A variety of music programmes can improve the mental or physical health of people with numerous diseases and conditions. There are no potential side effects, except, perhaps, getting a song stuck in your head. When therapy is needed to relieve pain or maintain or restore function to the body, different options are available. Physical therapy can be effective, but repetitive exercises may be boring. Music can add an element of fun to therapy. Music is an ideal motivator, because people have deep emotional responses to it on many levels; researchers and music therapists latch onto this to create treatments that can be as effective as, or more effective than, traditional therapies. “Music’s so multi-dimentional,” says Jeanette Tamplin, a music therapist and research fellow at the University of Melbourne who’s involv ed with ParkinSong. “It can be very functional. Like you’re getting people to walk in time to music. Or it can help them to access emotions and process grief ( 悲 伤 ) and adjustment through songs.” Doctors recommend music therapy to treat certain conditions, and researchers are working to expand the reach of treatments. 24. Sasha tipped the vase over gently and tried to pull him out, but Chester just yowled painfully. “We had to break the vase to get him out!” Looking at the annoyed and frightened cat inside, Sasha cried. “No,” said her dad, “If we break it, the glass might hurt Chester. Maybe we can put butter on the inside of the vase and slide him out.” Sasha’s mom buttered as much as she could reach, and her dad pulled the unhappy cat out. Luckily, not only Chester, but the vase, was still in one piece. With tears rolling in the eyes, Sasha held the buttery cat in her arms immediately. “Mom, you’re right. We’d better make a house for him now.” Sasha turned to her mom. After washing the butter out of the vase, mom brought a refrigerator box and helped Sasha made it into a cozy box house for Chester. They cut out round windows, decorated it all around and put pillows inside for him to sit on. Staring it with his glittering eyes, Chester loved it.
