Dier Pulatov was expecting big things when he left his home in Uzbekistan to study
at UW-Eau Claire. However, he never imagined that meeting the CEO of Apple or giving
a presentation to one of the top 25 investors of the 20th century would be part of
his college experience. "I cannot imagine a better place to obtain a high-quality.
education while making so many lifelong friendships," Pulatov says. "UW-Eau Claire
helped shape me intellectually(智力上)and my thinking about my future career.
This spring, Pulatov graduated with degree in finance and was named the 2020
College of Business Outstanding Senior, an honor that goes to a student who shows
great promise in their chosen field. Challenging coursework, multiple
internships(实习), lifelong friends and other high-impact outside-the-classroom
experiences were all part of his UW-Eau Claire journey, says Pulatov, who will begin
his professional career this summer as a risk advisory consultant for EY in Minneapolis.
A dream internship at the prestigious(有声望的) Driehaus Capital Management in

managers. "I worked hard to impress my manager and had a chance to attend many
high-level meetings," Pulatov says. "It was an extremely invaluable experience, which
helped me better understand what skills I need to develop, and it unlocked many new
opportunities."
While the internships were invaluable, he also had many on-campus experiences
that helped him grow his knowledge and thinking.

made on campus and in the UW-Eau Claire community. Those relationships were especially

Environmental issues are among the most pressing concerns of seaside cities around
the world that hope to find a solution through technological innovation for the growing
problem.
In an interview, Annika Olsen, former prime minister of the Faroe Islands and
current mayor of its capital Torshavn, expressed severe concerns about global warming.
"The weather is getting warmer and the temperature of the sea is increasing, which
poses a huge challenge to us as a fishery nation," Olsen said. Faroe Islands' fishery
export accounts for 98 percent of the total exports, said Olsen, adding that warming
of the sea is a challenge to the economy as to the environment. "We are very vulnerable
to changes in the climate," Olsen said, pointing out that "We have more rain and more
extreme weather, and the snow is actually gone during wintertime."
Olsen was one of over 300 mayors from about 70 countries around the world who
participated in international conference MUNI EXPO this year, which was held in Tel
Aviv. The city of Tel Aviv is noted as an innovative global center, which could be
beneficial for cities devoting themselves to reducing global warming effects. Besides
the mayors, about 8, 000 participants took part in the annual international innovation
convention, sponsored by the Federation of Local Authorities in Israel (FLAI).- 7 -
"Each town or city is unique, but many of the challenges we face are shared,"
Haim Bibas, chairman of FLAI and mayor of Modiin, said. "Coastal cities must deal
with the burden of beach tourism, pollution from the sea, the destruction of reefs
and rising sea levels and flooding, securing ports and coastal borders." All cities
must protect infrastructure(基础设施), ensure the high quality of air in urban
areas, provide smart solutions for global warming, and invest in green energy, he
added.
About 170 companies showed their unique technology at the exhibition part of the
conference. Mindaugas, president of the Association of Local Authorities in Lithuania,
said that there were more technologies focusing on the environment, and that could
make the cities more sustainable.
28. What is the Faroe Islands' main income?
A. Fishery. B. Agriculture. C. Industry. D. Tourism.
29. What's the aim of the conference MUNI EXPO?

A. Not all towns or cities are unique.
B. Different cities have different challenges.
C. Coastal cities face similar problems.
D. Pollution is the most serious problem to coastal cities.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. Coastal cities hope to invest in green energy.
B. Coastal cities hope to be more sustainable.
C. The latest technology about improving environment.
D. A convention about protecting infrastructure in coastal cities.

When we have a question about something deeply personal, many of us don't turn - 8 -
to a parent or a friend, but to our computers: We ask Google our questions.
As millions of us look for answers to questions, our searches produce a map of
hopes, fears, and desires.
Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, a former data scientist at Google, analyzes the
information we leave behind on search engines. He's the author of the book Everybody
Lies: Big Data, New Data, and What the Internet Can Tell Us About Who We Really Are.
"I think there's something very comforting about that little white box where
people feel very comfortable telling things that they may not tell anybody else about:
their health problems, their insecurities and so on. And using this data of search
engines, we can learn a lot more about people than we've really ever known," he said.
In this week's radio show, Stephens-Davidowitz argues that these new forms of
data are so valuable because they understand us better than we understand ourselves.
In the latter half of the show, we sit down with Kate Darling of MIT's Media Lab
and consider the following question:
"Are you real?"
The host who greets him looks and sounds 100 percent human. But is she?
"Well, if you can't tell," she asks William, "does it matter?"
If you can't tell, does it matter?
People have been wrestling with this question since the arrival of robotics. What
would it mean to have machines that are essentially just like us? Will robots ever
become fully conscious beings? And could they one day make us, their creators,
out-of-date?
This has been rich material for science fiction writers for years. But our
fascination with robot may be leading us to overlook a deeper question: Could robots
fundamentally change the way humans engage not with robots, but with other humans?
32. How do people deal with something private?
A. They ask friends for help. B. They keep it to themselves.
C. They turn to search engines. D. They analyze it with parents.
33. What does the underlined phrase "that little white box" in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. A map. B. The smart phone. C. A book. D. The search engine.- 9 -
34. Why are the new forms of data important?
A. They are the source of science fiction. B. They reshape the way we see
ourselves.
C. They lead us to question our existence. D. They set people thinking about
self-worth.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Our Changing Relationships with Artificial Intelligence
B. Our Growing Fascination with Robots
C. Our Growing Awareness of Self-identity
D. Our Changing Attitudes towards Search Engines

Travel and illness go hand in hand. How many times have you been on the road or
traveling by plane and within a three-day time the flu comes knocking? 36 Ways
to prevent? Like all good things, there is a set list of ingredients to fight against
getting sick while traveling is necessary.
Take your herbs(药草)with you.
By all means, you should pack some herbs. 37 This bitter fluid has been
studied to show an improved immunity of a person who suffers from respiratory(呼吸道
的)infections. A great herb to have on a hand (especially if you intend on trying
a new restaurant) will help settle that upset digestive track.
Do not ignore symptoms.
38 This alone can save several days spent in misery. However, sometimes we
have to travel for business, so postponing is looked down upon. If, this is the case,
check your insurance coverage when it comes to domestic and international traveling.
This is a cautious move when it comes to needing medical assistance while traveling.
39
Walking around the city, running, or exercise of some sort will help fight off
travel illnesses. We would all like to walk around for an entire week, but, be sure - 10 -
to clock in some exercises or low cardio action(有氧运动). Cardio helps our immunities
to stay in shape and traveling can be a bit dangerous on that front. There's a lot
of waiting around, so take that little extra time to jog in place or run.
Pack vitamins.
This is an easy one to forget. As a last minute check, pack some vitamins you
nearly take at home. Just because you're traveling doesn't mean you get a back seat
to when it comes to the flu. 40
A. Is there anything to be done?
B. Movement keeps you healthy.
C. Swimming is a good kind of exercise.
D. Should we carry a lot of food while travelling?
E. But the vitamins you take will be helpful to your cold.
F. Some herbs have already been known to treat bacterial infections.
G. Before traveling, if symptoms start to show, postpone traveling if possible.

Organic farming could help fight world hungry. That's how researchers reported
at a recent United Nations conference. How is organic farming different with
conventional farming? Conventional farming uses chemicals to grow, crops and kill
insects, thus to giving a higher crop yield. Therefore, organic farmers don't use
chemicals to make plants grow faster, which produces more pollution and boosts the
health of the environment. This process is considered earth-friendly method of farming.
Experts predicted at the conference that the amount of food producing in this way
would not fall. More important, a switch to organic farming would mean the hungry
could feed them at lower costs.
