Imagine someone who has spent the majority of their life sitting with a sign on the side of the road and that very person giving someone their last 20 dollars.
That’s exactly what Marine Corps veteran ( 退伍军人) Johnny Bobbitt, 34, did in
October in Philadelphia.
Bobbitt served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as a paramedic (医务辅助人
员) in Vance County, N. C. before he became homeless. Nobody knew how he got to
where he was because he was discreet about that.
One night in October, Bobbitt was sitting roadside with a sign in
Philadelphia as usual, when Kate McClure of Florence Township, N. J. was driving
home down Interstate 95 and ran out of gas. Scared and nervous, she got out of
the car to head to the nearest gas station. As McClure was heading to the nearest
gas station, she ran into Bobbitt and he told her to get back in the vehicle and
lock the door. Minutes later, he appeared with a red gas can. He’d used his last
$20 to buy her gas.
After that unexpected meeting, McClure and her boyfriend, Mark D’Amico, who
both live in New Jersey, visited Bobbitt several times to deliver gift cards,
cash, snacks and toiletries. They then decided to create a fund raising page so
he wouldn’t have to spend the holidays sleeping on the street.
McClure started the GoFundMe page on November 10. With the page, the couple
hoped to raise $10,000, enough money for his rent, a reliable vehicle and up to
six months’ expenses. Bobbitt’s story ran in a local paper. By November 15,more
than 10,000 local people had made donations through the GoFundMe page and more
than $300,000 had been raised.
On Thanksgiving, Bobbitt was resting in a hotel, his feet up on the bed,
drawing up a grand plan for his new life, thanks to several thousand dollars
raised to repay him for a good deed.

CEmpathy ( 同理心)is one of those strange qualities—something almost everyone
wants, but few know how to truly give or receive it. In a world where
self-satisfaction is emphasized, it is in short supply but high demand. This is
all the more reason to teach the next generation what it means to have empathy
for those around them.
What Is Empathy?— Many people confuse sympathy and empathy, but they are two
distinct values. Empathy is not just the ability to understand someone's feelings;
criminals often take advantage of people by appearing to understand their
feelings and subsequently gaining their trust. Empathy is more than that. Not
only is it the ability to recognize how someone feels, but it also values and
respects the feelings of another person. It means treating others with kindness,
dignity, and understanding.
Kids Need To See Adults Show Empathy—While some children are gifted with
naturally kind hearts, in most cases kids need to see empathy modeled by the
adults around them. It begins with the way parents relate to their children.
Parents who show an interest in the things that matter to their kids and respond
to emotions in a positive and caring way are teaching the skill of empathy.
Meet Emotional Needs—When children have their emotional needs met, two
things happen. They learn how to meet the emotional needs of others and they are
anchored in what they are receiving, meaning that they are secure enough to give
to others when the need arises but first they need to receive. An empty jug
cannot fill a cup.
It's a good idea to talk to kids about emotions and how other people
experience them. Give their emotions names (for example, jealousy, anger, and
love) and teach them that these are normal. Talk to them about how to handle
emotions in a positive way and point out situations where other people are
experiencing emotions. Teach them about respecting the emotions of others and
show them how to act in a situation where a response is required.
8. Why is it that the next generation are taught to have empathy?
A. Because people tend to center themselves. B. Because everyone lacks empathy.
C. Because empathy is a strange quality. D. Because it's better to give than to receive.
9. Which situation can empathy be used in?
A. When a mathematician is calculating the area of a farmland.
B. When a teacher is comforting a student about his failure in exams.
C. When a criminal is cheating a victim.
D. When a dancer is dancing to music.
10. What does the underlined sentence "An empty jug cannot fill a cup" mean?
A. An empty jug is too small to hold a cup.
B. It's a must to talk to kids about emotions.
C. Adults should set an example to kids.
D. Kids give empathy with their emotional needs met first.
11. What is the main topic of the passage?
A. How to train kids to have empathy.
B. How to distinguish sympathy and empathy.
C. How to help kids finish empathy-related tasks.
D. Whether kids can be trained to be more empathetic.

America is well known for being a melting pot of different ethnic groups and
cultures, but nowhere is this diversity more pronounced than in Queens, New York.
Here, second-generation Puerto Ricans live alongside third-generation Greeks
and first-generation Koreans, all united by a common feeling of pride in their
American identity. However, they are also proud and curious about their ancestral
roots. National Geographic’s Genographic Project, also known as the Human Family
Tree, set out to trace the origins by examining their genetic makeup using a
simple DNA test. What interested them more was something that intrigues us all:
the history of our recent ancestry. One recurring theme among immigrants seems to
be the hard work and sacrifices that went into building a new life, and how their
descendants now feel a duty to honor that effort by working hard too. Here is one
Queens resident’s story.
Richard, 38
My great-grandfather Tomas came to America from Poland when he was fifteen.
His mother had died, and his father remarried. Tomas didn’t like his stepmother,
so he ran away to Belgium, where he boarded a ship to America—without a ticket.
Arriving in America with nothing, he got a job on the railroads in California.
Then one day he saw an announcement in a newspaper that was read by immigrants.
It was from his brother in New York who was also seeking his fortune in America and was looking for him. Tomas got in touch and they had an emotional reunion in
New York, where Tomas subsequently settled. This is the story that my grandmother
has passed down to us, to my parents, and all my aunts and uncles. She is an
amazing woman and I suppose: the one who holds us all together. She’s actually
quite forgetful now, but she never forgets family details. What that has meant is
that all of us have a strong family bond and a strong sense of belonging to a
group that has struggled and fought together to steered here.
12. What is special about Queens?
A. Conflicting ethnic minorities live here.
B. Many foreigners like to travel to this place.
C. The pronunciation varies from person to person.
D. Many different people and cultures are gathering here.
13. What does the “one recurring theme” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A sad experience. B. A common subject.
C. An unknown topic. D. An unusual quality.
14. Which of the following can best describe Tomas?
A. Brave and independent. B. Tough and honest.
C. Talented and persistent. D. Kind and hard-working.
15. What can we know about the immigrants from the text?
A. They are ashamed of their roots.
B. They feel attached to their family.
C. They can’t fit in with the new surroundings.
D. They are less interested in recent generations.

What does Wi-Fi stand for?
Long gone are the days of dial-up and waiting for your turn to use the
computer. It’s easier than ever to connect to the Internet in the digital world
today. 16.
Wi-Fi is a wireless network that uses radio frequency signals to connect to the Internet or send messages between devices without wires. Everything from your
phone and laptop to tablets and printers can use Wi-Fi, thanks to these waves. 17.
Two years later, a group of companies formed the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility
Alliance (WECA, now the Wi-Fi Alliance), a global non-profit organization created
to promote the new Wi-Fi standard.
None of that history explains what Wi-Fi stands for, because the phrase
doesn’t stand for anything. Wi-Fi is a trademarked term describing the device or
technology based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
wireless communication standard 802.11, according to the Wi-Fi Alliance.18. So
the Wi-Fi Alliance hired the marketing company Interbrand to come up with a
shorter name: Wi-Fi, according to one of the founding Alliance members.
19. The rumor that it stands for “Wireless Fidelity (无线保证)” is thanks
to the Alliance. Some members didn’t understand the branding or marketing for
Wi-Fi. They felt consumers would want an explanation for the name. So the
Alliance agreed to include a tagline: The Standard for Wireless Fidelity. That’s
why so many people assume Wi-Fi stands for wireless fidelity, but the tagline
came after the name.20. Don’t add to the confusion and stop miss-associating
these phrases by learning the real meaning behind these acronyms (缩略词).
A. That’s a mouthful.
B. This is mostly thanks to Wi-Fi.
C. The name caused a misconception about Wi-Fi.
D. There is some debate surrounding the question what Wi-Fi stands for.
E. In 1997, a committee of industry leaders approved a common Wi-Fi standard.
F. Several years ago, a common standard of Wi-Fi was set up by several companies.
G. Plus, the Alliance removed the tag, although the confusion it brought still
lives on today.
【答案】
16. B17. E18. A19. D20. G

为条件状语从句,表示“如果”,可填 if;也可理解为时间状语从句,表示“当……时候”或
“一旦”,可填 when 或 once,故填 if/when/once。

8. 考查时态。根据前文的 are 判断为一般现在时,or 连接的两个谓语动词时态保持一致,
故将 had 改为 have。
