Andy had only ever seen snow on three occasions. Due to the extreme heat this year, the villagers
of Sundial were rather surprised when a snowman walked down from the mountains and into their tiny
village.
The snowman wore a thick white coat and a large blue hat over his round head. The villagers
stared at the man made of snow. "Is he a monster?" They whispered among themselves, afraid that he
would attack them. The snowman, however, just wandered into the library, grabbed some books, and began
reading.
Andy, ever a curious boy, walked up to the snowman. "Why are you wearing such thick clothes?
Are you cold?" The snowman shook his head. "Want to go play?" Andy asked. The snowman nodded and
they spent the day running through the woods, playing hide-and-seek. As the sun set, the snowman
waved goodbye to his little friend and left Sundial, passing by Andy’s home on his way back to
the mountains.
Andy’s father, the village head, saw the snowman when he looked out of the window at the setting
sun. Cold sweat dripped down his face. The following Sunday, he gave the villagers a very different
meeting.
The next time the snowman came to the village, the people of Sundial were ready, armed with rocks
and torches(火把). The strike was cruel. One of his coal eyes was knocked out, rolling down into
the snowfield. As the snowman desperately tried to flee, Andy’s father struck him with a little
torch, setting his coat on fire. The melting snowman rolled around, struggling to put out the blazing
flames. As his melting body extinguished the flames, the snowman fled the village of Sundial.
"Let him go,"Andy’s father said. "If he’s smart, he won’t come back." He turned around to
find his son on his knees, crying. "It’s alright,son. He won’t bother us again."

disappointment to show. She laid the carpet on the kitchen counter, and they headed outside to play.
The extent of Holly’s disappointment didn’t become evident until the following evening when she
came downstairs to say good night. "Well, I guess we know how much my best friend thinks of me, huh,
Mom?" she said in tears. "I’m so sorry,honey" was all I could manage to say.
The next morning, I carried the kitchen rubbish outside. My heart sank as I lifted the lid of
the trash can and saw Susan’s carpet lying there. Hesitating only for a moment, I took it out and
brought it into the house.
"Susan invited me to come over to her house tomorrow," Holly announced as she arrived home from
school a week later. Although her voice carried a so-what attitude, I sensed she was pleased by
the invitation. In spite of the number of times Susan had visited us, our invitations were never
returned and it would be the first time for Holly to go.
The next day I drove Holly to the destination. A tall woman stood in the doorway to greet us.
The house was shabby but neatly decorated with used furniture. From the chat with the woman we knew
Susan had long been separated from her parents and that she was Susan’s stepmother. A warm light
shone in her eyes as she revealed to me her fondness for Susan. I came to respect this generous-hearted
woman who had opened her home to a young girl and attempted to make a difference in her life.

lines he didn’t read aloud: "Would you look for a violin for my daughter? I can’t pay much, but
she enjoys much, and we’d like her to have her own instrument."
When Daddy received the letter from Columbus a few weeks later, he announced, "We will be driving
to Columbus to spend the night with Aunt Alice as soon as I can find someone to care for the farm."
At last the day arrived and we drove to Aunt Alice’s. After we arrived, Daddy made a phone
call. He hung up and asked, "Mary, do you want to go with me to visit Mr. Finkle?" "Sure," I answered.
He drove into a residential area and stopped in the driveway of a fine house. A tall man, older
than Daddy, opened the door. "Mary, I’ve been hearing things about you. Your daddy has arranged
a big surprise for you." Mr. Finkle led us into the living room. He picked up a case, opened it,
lifted out a violin, and started to play. The melody(旋律) surged and flowed like waterfalls.

might repeat things over and over, or be interested in only one subject. But it was Pahnuly that
inspired Kusa to think differently. One day, they played ping-pong with their parents at home in
Brooklyn Park. But Pahnuly struggled with it. So Kusa wanted to find a way to make it more suited
to his sister’s needs. He came up with a new game based on ping-pong. It is called Aeropong because
the ball seems to float in the air. In Aeropong, a ping-pong ball hangs from a frame. The players
hit the ball back and forth. It’s kind of like tennis, but no one has to chase the ball.
At first, Pahnuly didn’t show much interest. But soon, Kusa heard a sound coming from the front
room. Clack(吧嗒声). Clack. Clack. Pahnuly had picked up a paddle (乒乓球拍) and was tapping the
ball. Then, she started hitting it back and forth with Kusa and their dad. Eventually, the family
took a trip to Menards to buy some PVC pipes and fashioned a portable frame for the ball to hang
from. They also designed rules and ways to score points.
Word spread at school about Kusa’s game. His teacher, Stasica, asked him to tell his class about
Aeropong. Kusa was usually shy, but when he talked about his game, his face lit up with excitement,
Stasica said. Kusa told his classmates the game was meant to make people smile, especially his big
sister. "When she scores," he said, "she dances."

is as big as a house! My cousins and I high-fived each other and jogged until we stood at the base,
breathless. Standing in the boulder’s broad shadow, I noticed the sun had sunk lower.
"Let’s head back," Dad said after a few minutes. "There will be several crossroads on the way
back. Guys, keep up with the team." Soon we were crunch-crunch-crunching our way home. I was a little
behind the group when we approached a crossroads. And I noticed a set of animal tracks I hadn’t
recognized before, so I followed them for a closer look.

was going and after Alice told him that she was going to the bank at Nariman Point, the man said,
"Oh, my office is in the nearby building. Can I give you a lift?" Alice hesitated for a moment and
got into the car. They exchanged names and began to talk for a while. Then the driver switched on
the radio and was absorbed in the song. Alice looked out of the window and imagined her first day
at work, worrying whether she was capable of the new job, and if she could get along well with her
colleagues. After about ten minutes, Alice realized they were not on the familiar route to her office.

mother, leaving her alone at home. She tried to prepare meals for her parents, accidentally starting
a fire in the kitchen, which took her arms away.
Though her elder sister, who was studying in another city, showed her strong willingness to take
care of her, she was determined to be completely self-reliant. At school, she always studied hard.
Most important of all, she learned to be independent. Once she wrote the following in her composition:

to her chest. "I’ll help you find something for the little girl, too," I said to little Meghan.
