A
Elephant Reserve
Country:Thailand
This is a working vacation at a wildlife centre.Anyone can become a volunteer if he/she agrees to help the elephant keepers with tasks.
Daily tasks
Gather the elephants at 6:30 a.m.Take them to look for food in the forest.Clean the enclosure(围场).Swim with the elephants in the lake in the afternoon. If volunteers want to relax after work, they can watch satellite television.
How this vacation helps
If these elephants hadn't been rescued they would still be living on the streets of Bangkok. The rural environment is much better for them than the urban environment where there is lots of pollution.
Your Comment
“I love working with these huge gentle animals.”
Gorilla safari(观赏野兽的旅行)
Countries:Kenya,Rwanda and Uganda
Departures(出发):2-3 departures per month from Aug.to Dec.
Extras:permit £220
If you're lucky, you'll see lions, elephants and rhinos during this safari. The highlight(最好的部分) of the trip is the opportunity to see gorillas in the mountain forests. However, you must be in good health—if a gorilla caught a cold,it would be extremely harmful to its whole family.
How this vacation helps
There are only about 600 gorillas left in the world as human activity has reduced the area where they can live. When you buy a permit this will pay for the protection of the national park.
Your comment
“I'll surely go back as soon as I have enough money!”
Polar bear watching
Area & Country:Arctic,Canada
Departures:sixty trips between Oct.1-Nov.19.
Every October and November groups of polar bears gather in Hudson Bay.As they are normally lonely creatures, this is unusual. The bears wait for the ocean to freeze so that they can hunt for seals,so this is the perfect opportunity to see them.Extra activities include dog sledding(狗拉雪橇) and a night trip to see the Northern Lights.
How this vacation helps
If the Arctic ice cap melts due to global warming, polar bears will be in danger. We give a share of our profits(利益) to the charity that protects polar bears.
Your comment
“These terrible bears get all the liquid they need from their food.”

Luke has always been my closest and constant companion these past five years. In fact,he is very friendly to me especially when I take care of other furry friends in our shelter.
There have been a lot of forest fires during the summer season. Not far from our shelter,a forest caught fire during this hot summer.Luke rushed towards the forest where flames send out a terrible heat. There's no longer any hope at the moment to wait for Luke to come back to the shelter. In fact,I was waiting for the firemen to announce me his death in the forest.Suddenly,a fireman burst into my office and informed me that my dog Luke succeeded in saving four cats which were trapped by the flames.Luke seized the kittens, one by one moving them to a safe place.
I immediately accompanied the fireman to the forest to pick up the rescued kittens, but Luke was not there. Then we heard the sound of a dog came from the forest barking furiously. The firemen followed the tracks of the dog until they found him barking loudly by the side of an injured fireman who was lying on the ground.
That day,I was very proud of Luke for his two heroic actions.I paid a visit to the fireman accompanied with my adorable Luke. What a memorable scene when the fireman hugged Luke tightly to his chest! “One thousand thanks,Luke, for saving my life,” the fireman said.
This true story of love shows us that pets are kind loving, and caring. We should love and protect them.Don't belittle them.Little animals can make enormous things for humans.

After entering high school, you may find there are many clubs at your school. You may think you're too busy to join one.But as a former high school student,I can tell you joining a school club can greatly benefit(有益于)you.
Your old friends may have left you after entering high school. And it means you need to meet new people.Joining a club allows you to talk with others and find those who have similar interests as you.Based on my experience,I have met some of my best friends from club activities, which opened up many new doors for me.
Another really nice thing about joining a club is that it looks really good on your applications (申请书).Trying new things is something that looks really good on any application.Outgoing is considered a very good quality which shows that you are determined and willing to put yourself out there and best of all try new things. What's more,it can help you develop skills that can serve you during future college interviews.
Besides, joining a club can make students use their free time wisely. Most teens go to schools, then go back home and spend the rest of the day in front of a screen.Teens are also very likely to fall into the wrong crowd, which could lead to some bad results.Clubs are good places to spend time with good people to fall back on.
The most important reason why you should join a club is the longterm benefits it brings. The classroom isn't the only learning environment in a school. The skills you learn in clubs are necessary ones that can be used in everyday life, which I think is the final goal of joining a club.Things such as meeting and speaking to new people, making the most of time, and being organized are those you will meet every single day of your life, but you can learn all of them in clubs.
So if you haven't joined a school club yet,you know what you should do now.

Passenger pigeons (旅鸽)once flew over much of the United States in unbelievable numbers.Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks (群)so large that they darkened the sky for hours.
It was calculated that when its population reached its highest point, there were more than 3 billion passenger pigeons—a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world.Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller,a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.
Sadly, the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing.Where the birds were most abundant, people believed there was an everlasting supply and killed them by the thousands.
Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.
By the closing decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by American's need for wood, which scattered (驱散) the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and storms contributed to their decline.Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again.
In 1897,the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons, but by then,no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County,Ohio,in 1900.For a time,a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden on September 1,1914.

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Friendships made in school play a special part in young people's development. But
just what is it that makes an ideal(理想的)friend? Is it that they should be friendly and helpful? Or they should be supportive in times of danger or difficulty? For the past six years,my working partners and I have been carrying out the WISERD Education study with pupils in secondary schools to increase our understanding of the lives of young people in Wales. We are especially interested in making out what young people think of their friendship networks.
We find that a good sense of humor (82%),honesty (67%) and kindness (61%) are the top three qualities(品质)that these young people value most in their friendships. An interesting point is the qualities that young people consider least important in an ideal friend.Despite the television culture described by popular shows, the young people think being goodlooking(2%),fashionable (3%),rich (3%) and popular (4%) as the least important qualities that they look for in ideal friends.
What's more,we receive interesting answers when asking the pupils whether they have friends who are of a different gender(性别) or race at school. Some 84% say they have friends of a different gender at school and 61% tell us that they have friends of different races at school. This suggests that young people today are fairly openminded, and interested in contacting with “other” people who don't just look like them but have the same opinions as them.
Our study also supports the research from England, brought out in 2006,which has found that young people want to be part of strong, safe communities based on friendships. It can develop trust, concern for personal wellbeing,a sense of selfworth and encourage personal and collective social responsibility. These positive(积极的)friendships will hopefully result in these young people having more complete social activities and development in their community life as they grow up.
