What could be more healing than love?”‎ These words, like lines from a poem, arc easy to agree with coming from Robin, who (bunded the Bumi Sehat Bali Clinic in central Ubud, the setting for the film Eat, Pray, Love. Now the clinic provides treatment or educational support to over 100,000 people annually.‎ Giving birth to her first child at nineteen, Robin moved to Hawaii after college, working for several years on a farm, where she taught farming practices and poetry. But in 1991, she received heartbreaking news. Her idyllic life on the farm in Hawaii turned upside down when her sister, expecting a child in Alabama, died of pregnancy complications (妊娠并发症).‎ ‎“When my dear sister passed away, I realized mothers were dying everywhere. In countries with increased poverty, some people can't afford to go to the hospital. What motivated me initially was my love for my sister, but this soon grew into a concern for mothers and children all over the world." Robin's feelings for her sister transformed into a desire to help women everywhere in need, a feeling with her to this day.‎ To ensure that children are born healthy, nutritionally balanced meals are provided to expecting mothers free of charge. Those who lack housing are free to stay as long as necessary. The clinic also sees patients of all ages who have symptoms unrelated to childbirth, while providing facilities for language learning and IT education, and annually training over 6,000 nursing and midwifery (助产 学)students, backed by a scholarship program.‎ Just as Robin said, love is to be found inside the Bumi Sehat Clinic. Perhaps feelings of showing kindness toward others and wanting to make the world a better place are the key to a brighter tomorrow.‎ ‎24. Which of the following best explains "idyllic" underlined in Paragraph 3?‎ A. Peaceful. B. Dramatic.,‎ C. Tough. D. Troublesome.‎ ‎25. What made Robin change her career course at first?‎ A. Her love for midwifery.‎ B. Her desire to help children.‎ C. Her sorrow for her sister's death.‎ D. Her loss of interest in poetry.‎ ‎26. What do we know about the clinic? .‎ A. It is famous for its nursing program.‎ B. It offers mothers-to-be free diets.‎ C. It provides financial aid for mothers.‎ D. It has treated more than 6,000 patients.‎ 11‎ ‎27. What can we learn from Robin's story?‎ A. Love makes the world go around.‎ B. Ups and downs make one strong.‎ C. Kindness can be richly rewarded.‎ D. Hard work inspires great respect.‎ C Global health experts say that each year some of the 1.5 million people die from vaccine-preventable diseases due to gaping holes in medical record-keeping, especially in developing countries where resources to properly document immunizations (免疫接种)may be lacking.‎ To solve that problem, researchers headed by a team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have invented a way to deliver vaccines (疫苗)through a microneedle patch (贴 片)that is buried in the skin. It's a record that can't be seen, written in quantum dots (量子点)that contain vaccination history and give off light only readable by a specially equipped smartphone. The scientists say it doesn't require any link to a database and it doesn't tie into any personal information.‎ For now. the patch can only contain a handful of simple shapes. But adding more microneedles could make the designs more complex, potentially conveying information about a vaccination's date, dosage and more. From there, reading the dots becomes a lot like scanning a QR code (二维码). These designs could be scanned and interpreted by smartphones, and someday allow health providers to access patients' past vaccinations without chaos of external records.‎ The next step, before trials in people, is to test its practicability among experts in the field. The researchers now plan to work with health care workers in developing nations in Africa to get input on the best way to carry out this type of vaccination record-keeping.‎ ‎“Ultimately, we believe that this invisible 'on-body' technology opens up new possibilities for data storage and biosensing applications that could influence the way medical care is provided, especially in the developing world," the researchers conclude.‎ ‎28. What do the underlined words “that problem" in Paragraph 2 refer to?‎ A. Few medical resources.‎ B. Wrong ways to deliver vaccines.‎ C. Lack of vaccination record-keeping.‎ D. No vaccinations required in developing countries.‎ ‎29. What can we learn about quantum dots?‎ A. They keep a record of the vaccination.‎ 11‎ B. They need to be connected to a database.‎ C. They give away one's personal information.‎ D. They can read light produced by smartphones.‎ ‎30. How will health providers access patients' past vaccinations?‎ A. By reading the QR code.‎ B. By scanning the design.‎ C. By interpreting external records.‎ D. By increasing microneedles.‎ ‎31. What do the researchers expect of the new technology?‎ A. It will be cost-saving.‎ B. It will hit the market soon.‎ C. It may ensure the accuracy of data.‎ D. It may bring changes to medical care.‎ D ‎"The pile of ice is so thick; it extends more than 10,000 feet above the ocean. And if all that ice were to melt and go into the ocean, global sea levels would rise by about 24 feet everywhere around the world." said Jason Briner. a geologist who studies the ice sheet in Greenland at the University of Buffalo. The ice sheet of the biggest island in the world is melting, and the ice sheet that sits atop it is massive. The ice sheet is melting, of course. But just how much, compared to the past?‎ Briner's team did a computer simulation (模拟)of the southwest part of the Greenland ice sheet—which- he says is a good indicator for ice melting across the entire ice sheet. The researchers plugged past climate data into that model to “hindcast” rather than forecast, the past activity of the ice sheet. They then checked the model's predictions of the past shape and size of the ice sheet by looking at piles of rocks and dirt on Greenland today, which outline the edges of ancient ice. And the simulation was in good agreement with the actual situation.‎ Using that reconstruction of the ice sheet over time, the team could compare the ice sheet's historic losses to those happening today under human-caused global wanning. And they determined that Greenland is on track to lose more ice this century than during any century in the past 12,000 years possibly four times as much.‎ Finally, it's up to us how much ice actually melts. If the world goes net carbon zero by 2100, for example, Briner says ice loss could stop entirely at the end of the century, according to one model. "That was what kept me from being completely depressed about our study." Dozens of countries have already announced goals to go net zero by the middle of this century—so far the U.S. is not one of them.‎ ‎32. What do we know about the Greenland ice sheet?‎ 11‎ A. It is as thick as over 10,000 feet.‎ B. It is becoming smaller and smaller.‎ C. It has raised sea levels by 24 feet.‎ D. It is the largest ice sheet in the world.‎ ‎33. How did Briner's team conduct their research?‎ A. By modeling part of the ice sheet on computer.‎ B. By doing a simulation of the whole ice sheet.‎ C. By studying the ancient rocks and dirt.‎ D. By forecasting the future climate change. ‎ ‎34. What can we infer about the Greenland ice sheet in the last paragraph?‎ A. Its status has already been acknowledged.‎ B. Its growth can be improved by the model.‎ C. The speed of its melting will be increasingly fast.‎ D. The extent of its loss depends on human activities.‎ ‎35. What is the best title for the text?‎ A.
