Sunny days in Seattle are quite rare. I’d planned to spend my weekend in the sun, potting flowers outdoors. But that was before the pair of crows(乌鸦) arrived. Out of nowhere, they had set up their base camp in our backyard.
We first discovered our feathered enemies on Friday morning. It was early, and the sound the birds made traveled through our neighborhood. I figured they’d go away soon. But, no. They were getting louder and probably annoying my neighbors nearly as much as us with the noise. I admit I got a little desperate.
Then, on Sunday afternoon, I looked out of the kitchen window to see our dog Quatchi staring at something on the ground. I went to explore and found a small coal-black bird in the grass. Its eyes were milky, and it stayed perfectly still as my dog walked towards it. Only when Quatchi touched his nose to its head did it walk away. I grabbed the dog and locked him inside and came back with my camera.
It never occurred to me that the young would be hanging out on the ground, growing and gaining strength as its parents guarded it from above. The second I saw this little creature I forgave the crows.
To be honest, I’ve never been much of a bird person. I also have a healthy respect for birds and by healthy, I mean slightly fear-based. They’re basically living dinosaurs.
I wish they’d chosen another backyard. There are only so many sunny days in Seattle, and I still can’t do any gardening out there. But I’m also grateful that I got to see this little bit of nature unfold up close. It’s pretty amazing.
The experience has also strengthened my desire to create a beautiful backyard garden that attracts lots of bees, butterflies, and yes, birds. They are welcome here.

Facebook has taken over a start-up named CTRL-Labs, which is developing devices that can pick up electrical signals from the brain and transmit them to a computer. CTRL-Labs has designed a wristband that can identify the signals the brain sends to the hand telling it to move, and decode (解 码)them. It could then transmit that command — for example, to press a button — to a computer or other devices.
It also “captures (捕捉)your intention”,said Facebook VR president Andrew Bosworth. “So you can share a photo with a friend using an imperceptible (极细微的)movement or just by, well, intending to,” he said in a post on his personal Facebook page.
Facebook has not confirmed a report by CNBC which claimed that the deal was worth between $500m and $ l bn (£0.4bn and £0.8bn).) Mr Bosworth said he hoped the CTRL-Labs team would help Facebook to "build this kind of technology, at scale and get it into consumer products faster"
There was a mixed response to the news.
“Facebook needd to leave us alone. Step away from our lives more.” tweeted tech commentator Azeem Azhar.
“I'm very curious to see what the response is from regulators here," wrote an analyst Fatemeh Khatibloo.
Underneath Andrew Bosworth's Facebook post, Josh Chan, founder of an educational app, said the news was exciting.
“As an educator, I'm imagining how this could transform how we all learn," he said.
Facebook implied it would be some time before the product came to market. "The CTRL-Labs technology is an innovative input that Facebook hopes will be used to significantly improve the upcoming Facebook VR experiences a few years down the road to fundamentally improve the user experience." it said.
Facebook may have more to say about the new acquisition on Wednesday at its annual VR headset event, which the firm purchased in 2014 for around $2bn.

D.People's lives have been totally disturbed by Facebook.
6.What is the author's attitude towards CTRL-Labs?
A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Objective. D.Indifferent.
7.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The acquisition of a start-up company that has designed a fancy wristband.
B.The design of a high-tech product that can greatly affect people's lives.
C.The development of a wristband that can capture users' intentions.
D.The purchase of a start-up company that is developing a mind-reading product.

There are more species of beetles than any other form of life. About 380 000 species of beetles are known to exist, and more are discovered all the time. There are several theories about why there are so many beetles, but fossils evidence shows that beetle species die out less than other animals, Beetle species exist in such huge number because beetles are true survivors. They refuse to die out.
One of the reasons beetles survive so well is their body design. Most beetle species have two pairs of wings. The front pair of a beetle’s wings are hard and thick. They are not used for flying. These protect the back set of wings and the beetle’s stomach. Instead, some species of beetles have lost the ability to fly, but they are still equipped with front wings. The wings protect the beetle’s soft parts from harm. These features help protect beetles, which makes them less likely to die out if they are faced with new predators (捕食性动物).
Beetles can also eat a wide range of foods. Beetle species live all over the world, and they have many different types of food available to them. Most beetles are omnivores. That means they eat both plants and animals. Their mixed diets help beetles adapt to many different habitats. Over the course of time, food sources, like certain plants and animals, do not exist anymore. Others spring up. The beetle survives because it can find something to eat, no matter what.
Finally, beetles are good at moving quickly over long distance. Any change in an animal’s environment can be dangerous to it. For example, many species died out during the Ice Age, when Earth’s temperature dropped for a long time. However, some species can avoid dangerous environment changes by moving to a new place. Research shows that beetles respond quickly to shifts in temperature. They can move to safer environments.
Beetles’ bodies and habits help give them an edge over other creatures. They are unlikely to die out. As a result, beetles make up nearly one quarter of all animal species. There are more types of beetles on Earth than there are types of plants. Some types of beetles that exist today were around during the Permian period of history, 284 million years ago. Beetles, clearly, are here to stay.
8.What is important about a beetle’s front wings?
A.They are used to catch the prey. B.They enable the beetle to fly.
C.They help the beetle move quickly. D.They protect the soft body parts.
9.How do beetles respond to changes of habitats?
A.They are adaptable to the food change.
B.They can change their body temperature.
C.They are adaptable to the freezing cold weather.
D.They can use their wings to fight against the cold.
10.What is the most probable title of the passage?
A.The Ice Age affected the beetles B.Different habitats affected the beetles
C.Beetles: the six-legged survivors D.Beetles: the unique predators
D
It was once common to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique characteristics.
In recent years, many writers have begun to speak the 'decline of class' and 'classless society' in Britain. And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class.
But pronouncing the death of class is too early. A recent wide-ranging society of public opinion found 90 percent of people still placing themselves in particular class; 73 percent agreed that class was still a vital part of British society; and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an important part of British society. Britain seems to have a love of stratification.
One unchanging aspect of a British person's class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her or his class. A study of British accents during 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was viewed as the most attractive voice. Most people said this accent sounded 'educated' and 'soft'. The accents placed at the bottom in this study, on the other hand, were regional city accents. These accents were seen as 'common' and 'ugly'. However, a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice.
In recent years, however, young upper middle-class people in London, have begun to adopt some regional accents, in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class becoming unnoticed. However, the 1995 pop song 'Common People' puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may 'want to live like common people' they can never appreciate the reality of a working-class life.
11.A recent study of public opinion shows that in modern Britain ________.
A.people regard themselves socially different
B.most people belong to middle class
C.it is easy to recognize a person’s class
D.it is time to end class distinction
12.The word “stratification” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A.variety B.qualification C.authority D.division
13.British attitudes towards accent ________.
A.are based on regional status B.have a long tradition
C.are shared by the Americans D.have changed in recent years
14.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The middle class is expanding B.A person’s accent reflects his class
C.Class is a key part of British society D.Each class has unique characteristics.

____15____ I remember playing police and robbers in the woods, getting a speaking part in the school play. Of course, kids also experience lows, but their delight at such peaks of pleasure as winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved.

For teenagers, or people under 20 the concept of happiness changes.____16____ I can still feel the pain of not being invited to a party that almost everyone else was going to. I also remember the great happiness of being invited at another event to dance with a very handsome young man.
In adulthood the things that bring great joy—birth, love, marriage—also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. ____17____ For adults, happiness is complex.
____18____ But I think a better definition of happiness is “ the ability to enjoy something”. The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It's easy to overlook the pleasure we get from loving and being loved, the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, even good health.
While happiness may be more complex for us, the solution is the same as ever. Happiness isn't about what happens to us; it’s the ability to find a positive for every negative, and view a difficulty as a challenge. ____19____

C. Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life.
D.Being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect.

As I drive about the Sois in rural Thailand I catch little glimpse of things that barely register on the mind as the scenery flies by; strange things, beautiful things, sad things, interesting things. I wish I could hold on to these scenes; explore them in detail. I wish that I had the time to stop and investigate further as I’m driving by, but time is a commodity(商品) worth more than all the moneys in the world. I wish I had more.
I once had a guy wave to me as I passed him. He yelled out something, almost in greeting, as if he knew me. I wonder if we knew each other once, in another place, another time, and he recognized my soul as I drove by in the truck, and just had to yell a hello. I wish I had stopped and said hello too. I saw two young girls, dressed in school uniforms. White blouses, blue skirts, books in hand. They were holding hands, talking, walking down the road, jostling(推,搡) each other with their shoulders and teasing each other as they strolled along. As I passed the one closest to the truck looked up. She was close enough to touch almost. Her smiling face, her clear eyes and golden smooth skin are there
5
in my mind’s eye now. I can see her as if she were standing next to me.
Once in a while her face just pops into my head. Why? Why is she still there? Sometimes I think maybe I’m a bit mad.I stopped at a road stop on a corner one time. An old lady standing by the roadside walked over to the truck and put her hand on my arm and smiled at me. Her palm was so cool. It must have been a hundred degrees out that day. She said something in Thai and giggled(咯咯地笑) and walked away. Who was she? Why did she touch me? Why was her hand so cool? Why did I just sit there and let her touch me? I didn’t flinch(退缩) away. It was almost as if I knew her, and we were just saying a quick hello. Her cool touch almost seemed familiar; like my long dead grandmother’s soothing cool touch remembered from when I was just a little boy.
I need more time. I need to stop the truck more often, and just say hello. Things glimpsed along the road are often far more interesting and wonderful than that which seems to consume our daily lives. Slow down. Stop the truck. Get out, and say hello.
