B Giuseppe Paternò achieved the dream of a lifetime: He got a university degree when he was 97. Mr. Paternò’s graduation has inspired news coverage around the world, partly because of his age. Mr. Paternò has seemed to get around the many difficulties he has faced in his lifetime. Studying had been his passion since he was a small child, he said, “but unfortunately life betrayed me.” Born in Palermo in 1923, he was the first of seven children in a very poor family. His dad worked at a job on a farm, and his mother took care of these children at home. Mr. Paternò began working soon after finishing primary school. “The family was large, there was only one paycheck, we were under fascism ( 法 西 斯 主 义 ), and times were tough,” he said. Eventually he ended up at a publishing house, where the boss persuaded his father to send him back to school for a three-year vocational degree. Mr. Paternò then worked for an insurance agency while he took private classes to become a telegraph operator. The job also opened doors to the State Railways company, where he worked for more than four decades. In 1951, with a wife and two small children at home, he earned a high school degree as a surveyor, which led to an office job at State Railways. It was only after he retired, in the mid-1980s, that he returned to his books, taking theology courses through the Archdiocese of Palermo after a chance meeting with a professor of history who urged him to follow his passion. Mr. Micari, the president of the University of Palermo, congratulated Mr. Paternò on finishing his degree with a near-perfect grade point average. “A graduate at this age, who has all this passion, this enthusiasm, and this talent is certainly an extraordinary spokesman for our university,” Mr. Micari told reporters later. 4. What did Giuseppe Paternò do after primary school? A. He took care of children at home. B. He worked to support his family. C. He helped his father with his work. D. He managed a publishing house. 5. Which word best describes the boss of the publishing house? A. Creative. B. Good-tempered. C. Cautious. D. Far-sighted. 6. What made Giuseppe Paternò get an office job at State Railways? A. It’s never too late to learn. B. Rome wasn’t built in a day. C. Education is the key to success. D. Ups and downs make one strong. C Britain’s streets are becoming increasingly crowded with throwaway facemasks and protective gloves, a survey has found, as councils warn that they are battling with a mountain of personal protective equipment (PPE) litter. Four in ten councils have identified throwaway masks, gloves and other forms of PPE as a problem in their area, and warned that it could pose an infection risk. The District Councils’ Network (DCN) represents 187 regional authorities, covering waste collection for 22 million people. “As well as being potentially dangerous for pets and wildlife, there is a risk that they could spread infection,” it said. “The World Health Organization has warned that appropriate handling is essential to avoid any increase in the spread of disease.” Councils are already struggling with waste collection during the pandemic ( 流 行病 ) as residents are creating more rubbish while spending longer periods at home. The DCN said some weeks this summer had been like “Christmas collections”, referring to the larger amounts of rubbish over the festive period. Dan Humphreys, the DCN’s chief for enhancing quality of life, said: “Facemasks, opposite. We would remind residents to think about how they deal with their waste.” Scientists, however, have warned that even if masks are dealt with properly, 124,000 tons of single-use facemasks could end up in landfill ( 填 埋 场 ) if people do not switch to reusable coverings. 8. What is DCN’s attitude towards PPE litter? A. Worried. B. Tolerant. C. Skeptical. D. Approving. 9. Why is “Christmas collections” mentioned in paragraph 4? A. To recall the festival. B. To admire the atmosphere. C. To advocate the collection. D. To criticize the phenomenon. 10. What can we infer from the scientists’ warning? A. It is better to produce multiple-use equipment. B. It is better to use reusable equipment. C. More rubbish will be produced. D. More landfills will be built. 11. What is the text mainly about? A. The benefits of wearing facemasks. B. The ways of dealing with rubbish. C. The problem of handling PPE litter. D. The importance of protecting individuals. D A strong coffee after a poor night’s sleep is the kick-start many people need in the morning but new research suggests that it might be best to have a bite to eat first. A study has found that drinking coffee first can have a negative effect on blood sugar control — a risk factor for diabetes ( 糖尿病 ) and heart disease. “We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee — subjectively the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee,” said Professor James Betts, at the University of Bath in the UK. For their study, researchers at the University of Bath got 29 healthy men and women to take part in three different overnight experiments, with at least a week between them. In one, the participants had a normal night’s sleep, roughly from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and were asked to consume a sugary drink on waking in the morning. They then experienced an interrupted night’s sleep, where the researchers woke them every hour for five minutes by sending them text messages to which they had to respond — and upon waking were given the same sugary drink. On another night, participants experienced the same sleep interruption, but this time were first given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before consuming the sugary drink. They found that one night of interrupted sleep did not worsen the participants’ blood sugar and insulin ( 胰 岛 素 ) responses when compared to the normal night’s sleep — although previous research suggested that losing many hours of sleep or many nights of poor sleep could have a negative effect. However, strong black coffee consumed before breakfast actually increased the blood sugar response by around 50% — suggesting that relying on coffee after a bad night to stop feeling sleepy could limit your body’s ability to tolerate the sugar in your breakfast. 12. What does the underlined word “kick-start” in paragraph 1 refer to? A. A kind of sport. B. A kind of power. C. A kind of medicine. D. A kind of belief. 13. What was unchanged in the three experiments? A. The duration of sleep. B. The blood sugar response. C. The sugary drink. D. The intake of coffee. 14. What increased the participants’ blood sugar response most before breakfast? A. A normal sugary drink. B. A normal night’s sleep. C. An interrupted night’s sleep. D. A cup of strong black coffee. 15. How did researchers draw the conclusion? A. By comparing the results. B. By listing some examples. C. By surveying the participants. D. By referring to some documents. 24. A B Even with wonderful friends family and a partner, I don't always want to be surrounded by people. “Table for one? Or will someone else be joining you?” A dinner reservation for one person never fails to raise a few eyebrows. I actively choose to spend time alone when possible. But not everyone has the luxury of choosing to be alone, of course, many are forced into one-on-one time because they have no one. But for those of us who spend our days surrounded by colleagues in the workplace, our evenings and weekends with family, friends and partners, all the while being constantly bombarded by WhatsApp,social media and email, time to ourselves can be a rare treat. Time to yourself not only gives you the chance to do practical things you don't normally get round to but also the activities your pals don't want to do. In a less real way, spending time alone also allows-or perhaps forces- you to sit with your own thoughts, to think about things that might normally be drowned out by conversation and the noise of companionship. When you're alone you get time to think without purpose. It is worth noting that I'm a real introvert(性格内向者),so perhaps sitting alone with my thoughts-refilling my energy reserves-might just be indulging personality traits that others don't have. But I believe more people could benefit from it. Given this constant social conditioning since childhood that we should be surrounded by people , it's no wonder many hesitate to press forward at the idea of spending time alone-a sign we've failed at climbing that social ladder. And if you're an extrovert who gets their energy from other people, this must be even harder. But as someone who has come to love spending time alone, even when there are many wonderful souls in my life I can spend time with, I wish more people would give solo a go. Reservation for one, please. 4. What can we learn from the first paragraph? A. The author wants to be alone all the time. B. The author feels bored with family and friends. C. Surrounded by people, the author still feels lonely. D. Reserving a table for one will draw disapproving looks. 5. What is the main idea of the second paragraph? A. The benefits of alone time. B. The weaknesses of social media. C. The definition of being alone. D. The ways of spending time alone. 6. How does an introvert regain their energy according to the author? A. By eating delicious food. B. By reflecting on their own thoughts. C. By socializing with others. D. By reading their favourite books. 7. The last sentence "Reservation for one, please." is intended to . A. quote others' words B. answer the waiter's question C. excite the readers' appetite D. stress the author's determination 【答案】4. D 5. A 6. B 7. D C Friday was "Chatty Bus day", an experiment aimed at getting people to talk to each other on public transport. This is not an idea that would appeal to those who commute in the rush hour, because there is a smaller distance within which it's just as uncomfortable to talk. Elbow(肘) room is a precondition for sociability. It is no coincidence that the first truly personal music player, the Sony Walkman, was invented in Japan where the commuter trains are literally crowded with people. We will also not talk to strangers who are physically too far away, of course. No one wants to shout their small talk. Only on country buses or similar unhurried and uncrowded forms of public transport can people reach out to their neighbors, confident that they are doing so from a position of strength and autonomy. For all these drawbacks, the idea of talking to strangers is still a good one, and the promotion of sociability is good for society. Although it does seem to be a general rule that people are friendlier the fewer there are of them and more hostile and indifferent as cities get more crowded, there are still considerable cultural variations. And there is evidence that friendlier places are also healthier, and their inhabitants happier. It is true that the apparent loneliness of many people on public transport is a false impression. Many will be caught up with conversations with distant friends on their phones; some will be talking to the people in books. Some may be in willed solitude with their headphones. But there are always people who would be interested in an unexpected conversation with a stranger. This need not go on for too long. It is not large and possibly life-changing conversations that are what most people in loneliness miss most. What they really need is not deep thought but superficiality. The kind of conversation that you could have with anyone reminds you that you yourself might be anyone. It is a release from the prison of the self, which is where lonely people serve their sentences, uncertain whether they ever can be paroled(假释). Friendship may be too rare a gift to hope for, but sometimes the kindest thing to say is also the simplest: "Don't be a stranger"-and sometimes that's also enough. 8. According to Paragraph 1, why the first Walkman appeared in Japan partly? A. its corporate culture B. its overcrowded public transport C. its people's creativity D. its people's desire for personal space 9. Which of the following belongs to "these drawbacks" underlined in paragraph 3? A. "Chatty Bus day" has not been introduced to other areas. B. Walkman prevents passengers from talking to each other. C. Passengers are unwilling to make small talk with strangers. D. Improper physical distance discourages casual communication. 10. What is the author most likely to agree with? A. Small talk to strangers will help ease loneliness on the road. B. Lonely people are in desperate need of deep conversation. C. People in less populated cities tend to be cold and distant. D. It's inadvisable to talk to strangers who are physically too close. 11. What is the author's main purpose in writing the text? A. To cast new light on human loneliness. B. To introduce an experiment and its effects. C. To advocate striking up conversations with strangers. D. To explore the relationship between physical distance and willingness to reach out. 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. C D An endangered deer with vampire-like sharp teeth was spotted for the first time in nearly 60 years, in a remote forest in northeastern Afghanistan. The creature is known as the Kashmir musk deer, and it is native to the Himalayas of northern India, Pakistan’s Kashmir region and northern Afghanistan. Only the male deer have sharp teeth, and they use them during mating season to compete for females. A team of researchers searched Afghanistan’s Nuristan province during 2008 and 2009, and recorded five sightings of the animal. This was the first time the species had been spotted since 1948. During the survey, the researchers spotted a single male Kashmir musk deer near the same area three separate times. The researchers also recorded one female and her baby, and saw a second single female that they think may have been the same deer, without her baby. These musk deer are classified as an endangered species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List. Musk-deer meat is a local delicacy, but the species is mostly hunted for its scent glands(香腺) that are more valuable by weight than gold---some believe the glands have pharmaceutical (药学的) properties, and they sell for nearly $20,455 per pound ($45,000 per kilogram) on the black market, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Three decades of war have ravaged Nuristan province, and the continued violence and political instability make the black-market trade of scent glands uncontrollable. Furthermore, the species is quickly losing suitable habitat. All of the musk deer were spotted on sheltered rocky outcrops around 9,843 feet (3,000 meters) high. In the summer, they regularly trek (跋涉) along steep slopes that make them almost impossible to approach and keep them relatively safe from hunters. However, heavy snowfall in the winter drives the species farther down, to more human-accessible slopes, and hunters come from all over the country to track the deer for their valuable scent glands. Due to violence and unrest, nongovernmental organizations like the Wildlife Conservation Society have not been able to operate in the Nuristan province since 2010. The WCS maintains contact with locals they have trained to survey and search for the musk deer. Once the situation in Nuristan improves, the WCS intends to return to the area to continue research and to formulate a conservation plan. 12. Why does male deer use sharp teeth in mating season? A. To fight for their land. B. To beat for females. C. To hunt for food. D. To frighten their enemies. 13. What can we learn from the passage? A. All of the Kashmir musk deer in the mountainous area have sharp teeth. B. People hunt for the deer mainly because their meat is delicious. C. It is relatively easier for hunters to hunt the rare species in winter. D. The Kashmir musk deer are fierce animals because of their sharp teeth. 14. Which factor does not contribute to the uncontrollable trade in the black market? A. Government control. B. Continued violence. C. Political instability. D. Years of war. 15. Which of the following statements about the Wildlife Conservation Society is true? A. It has been doing research on the musk deer in this area since 2010. B. It has sent a small group of people to search for the musk deer C. It is one of the organizations sponsored by governments worldwide. D. It is making efforts to help and protect this rare species in the area . 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. During the flight, she told the passenger next to her, Alex Pontes, that she was traveling so her son could be hospitalized. She also explained that she was relying on the charity of others for living quarters. The passenger talked to the crew of the airline and asked to use the airplane's loudspeaker, inviting the other travelers to contribute to a spontaneous collection to help the mother and her son.“All of us would like to find an angel to help us. Those of us who feel moved to do so, let's help this mother to take a little something with her. a little something we have and can share," he said. In a matter of minutes, passengers offered a total worth near $ 400 which goes a lot further in Brazil than in the USA, plus applause for the mother, who was thrilled with the help and repeatedly expressed her gratitude to the passengers. The site that first shared the story later updated the article, adding that Caleb went through surgery and was recovering well. The website Razoes Para Acreditar reported that the story caught the attention of Brazilin TV personality Luciano Huck, who started a crowdfunding campaign to help the family. C Most people think that women are naturally kind, cry too much and think with their hearts, instead of using their heads like men. Meanwhile, men are thought to be born to be rational creatures who naturally know how to lead and do math. However, statistics on personality types report that 75. 5% of women are Feelers and 56. 5% of men are Thinkers. So, right now we see that a huge number of men about 43%- -have Feeling preferences. According to these numbers, only 25% of women are Thinkers. A majority of women tested are Feelers, but are a majority of women born as Feelers? In many regards, women are still expected to uphold the feminine(女性的) goals of half a century ago- stay pretty, have babies, keep a tidy home, and cook a good nutritious meal every night. Now, in addition to those old standards, most women plan on working and having careers. But even in the workplace, showing a Thinking preference can be problematic. Women who take charge or offer criticism may be seen bossy. Of course the question goes to the Thinking men. Boys learn at a young age that being emotional or sensitive can be seen to be less strong. They have been taught not to cry to show that they are brave enough to bear any sufferings. In that case, they are more likely to be less of Feelers. Maybe Feeler women and Thinker men are not naturally . There is nothing wrong with being a Feeler woman or a Thinker man. Being a Feeler does not mean that you're a rollercoaster of emotions who might knock over a table at any moment, nor does being a Thinker mean that you are an infallible robot designed to make heartless decisions. Regardless of gender, your personality and preferences are completely valid; neither Thinking nor Feeling is right or wrong, good or bad. And of course, people, who prefer a Thinking style still have feelings, and Feelers can be extremely intelligent. 28. What is the common belief about men according to paragraph 1? A. They prefer to be math teachers. B. They tend to think with their heads. C. They seem ruder and more merciless. D. They are emotional group leaders. 29. What mainly makes women become Feelers? A. They warn in a report that it can cause severe and damaging effects on Pacific Ocean areas. The recently-released report examined more than 250 published studies on deep Sea mining. The research was examined by the Deep Sea Mining Campaign- a collection of not-for profit organizations. The report centers on mining activities related to small metallic particles, called nodules, found on the seabed. The material can contain different metals. Increasing demand for these metals has led to a rise in deep-sea mining operations. The metals are commonly used in battery manufacturing and other technology products. However, the scientists warn that mining for these nodules will cause irreversible damage to an ocean already under pressure. The operations will affect areas across the South Pacific, including the nations of Kiribati, the Cook Islands, Nauru, Tonga and Papua New Guinea. The report notes that a moratorium is the only responsible way to move forward until certain conditions surrounding deep-sea mining can be met. The scientists are calling for additional study to fully understand the environmental, social and economic risks. Andrew Chin is the report's lead researcher. He says in a statement that nodule mining will likely result in the loss of sea life and cause damage to deep seabeds for thousands of years. He adds that the operations can put people at risk who depend on the ocean and its continued health. A company planning to be one of the first to carry out mining operations in the area is Canada's DeepGreen, which aims to begin by 2024. It seeks to mine metallic nodules to be used in power systems for electric vehicles. DeepGreen Chief Executive Officer Gerard Barron defended the company's plans in reaction to the report. He said deep-sea mining offered the best alternative to surface mining, which has a long history of pollution and destroying forests and wildlife. 32. Why are deep-sea mining operations on the rise? A. More metals are needed. B. Surface mining is banned, C. Battery industry is falling. D. The seabed is easy to find, 33. Which of the following best explains the word “moratorium" underlined in paragraph 4? A. Loose measure. B. Thorough study. C. Permanent deal. D. Temporary stop. 34. What can we learn from Andrew Chin's words? A. Conditions surrounding deep-sea mining are great. B. The damage caused by nodule mining is reversible. C. Nodule mining can cause harm in various aspects. D. People sure less likely to be affected by nodule mining, 35. What's Gerard Barron's attitude towards deep-sea mining? A. Opposed. B. Supportive. C. Ambiguous. D. Unconcerned. 21D 22. B 23. Watch a lion or dragon dance Lion and dragon dances have been part of the festival since the Tang Dynasty. Closely related to kung fu, these dances demand strength and balance. Dragon dances are performed by a group of people who work together to bring the dragon's powerful yet graceful movements to life. Look out for the final and also the most exciting part of the dance called cai qing which means “picking the greens”. Competing groups will battle each other very hard to get the red envelope hidden in the green vegetables. Eat and dress yourself up lucky Like any festival in China, Chinese New Year is all about food. So prepare to eat yourself lucky. A whole fish is a popular choice. It means you'll have plenty of riches. Likewise, dumplings are also a lucky dish because they are said to look like the ancient silver coins. For more good luck, wear red underwear. If you happen to have been born in the Year of the Cow, you'd better wear them all year, as your ben ming nian is believed to be a year of bad luck. Also, on New Year's Day, don't clean anything-even yourself - or you'll be washing away the good luck. Travel smart and cheap Generally speaking, it is best to avoid travel in China at all during the busy Spring Festival period known as chunyun. But if you fly on New Year's Day, when offices are closed and Chinese families stay together, it can be surprisingly cheap with few passengers, particularly on popular routes, such as Beijing to Shanghai. You should avoid trying to head to major cities by public transport later than five days before or after New Year's Day, when millions of urban workers make their way home or back to work. 21. Why do dance groups fight so hard at the end of the dance? A. To prove their power. B. To show their kung fu. C. To get the red envelope. D. To hide the lucky vegetables. 22. What is a bad thing to do on New Year's Day? A. Eating fish. B. Wearing red underwear. C. Making dumplings. D. Having a shower in the evening. 23. When can you buy very cheap flight tickets during chunyun in 2021? A. On February 6. B. On February 8. C. On February 12. D. On February 18. 【答案】21. C 22. D 23. But that changed in mid-March, when those bars closed and her daughter's school, where she'd gotten free breakfast and lunch, did too. By April 20, Elia and her husband had to skip meals to save food for their children. Still, by the end of April, all they could give their children was a bowl of rice with an egg mixed in. Her sons, 4 and 5-year-olds, would ask for more. But her oldest daughter, Angellia, a talkative kindergartener, tried to comfort her mother. “She said, 'Mama, I'm still hungry', Elia said, “but she told me it was OK because she was big and could wait until I got more food. That hit me hard." A study in 2015 found that 22 percent of adults reported skipping meals because they didn't have money for food in Puerto Rico. "Now, the rate is much higher,“ said Jose Caraballo-Cueto, co-author of the study. "The unemployment rate has risen to 46 percent and the average saving rate here is zero. " The worsening food crisis has brought people in Puerto Rico closer. Christel Galindez, a community leader, has been picking up thirty cooked meals a day from a church near her home and delivering them to different families every day. "Do you know when people are really in need?” Christel asked. "When you show up with a plate of food and they start to cry!" During her daily food delivery run last Wednesday, she drove up to Elia's front door playing a birthday song through her car's speakers. Angellia rushed out with a big smile and started dancing to the music when Christel handed three containers of food and three cupcakes to her mother. "Thank you so much. Today happened to be Angellia's sixth birthday. But I had nothing in the kitchen," said Elia, who was struggling to hold back her tears. 24. Where had Elia's daughter got her breakfast and lunch on her schooldays? A. At home. B. At her father's restaurant. C. At school. D. At a church in the neighborhood. 25. Why are Jose Caraballo-Cueto and his study mentioned in paragraph 5? A. To summarize the previous paragraphs. B. To provide answers to the problem. C. To add some background information. D. To introduce a new topic for discussion. 26. Why did Christel come to Elia's house? A. She was on her way to help those in need. B. She was sent by a church to deliver food. C. She came to celebrate Elia's birthday. D. She made some cupcakes for the children. 27. What is the best title for the text? A. Angellia, a Lovely Girl B. The Health Crisis in San Juan C. Crisis Can Bring People Closer D. Hunger Spreads Quickly in Puerto Rico 【答案】24. C 25. C 26. A 27. (上周三,在每天送餐的过程中,她开车来 到 Elia 家的前门,通过汽车的扬声器播放生日歌曲。)”可推断,Christel 是在为有需要的人分发 食物的途中来到 Elia 家的。故选 A。 【27 题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,本文主要是通过描述 Elia Gonzalez 一家面临断炊的困境,来反映 饥饿正在波多黎各快速蔓延的现实。这篇文章最好的题目是“饥饿在波多黎各迅速蔓延”。故选 D。 C Elon Musk isn't content with electric cars, shooting people into orbit and populating Mars. He also wants to get inside your brain. His goal is to develop devices that can provide treatment to neural(神经的)diseases-and that may one day be powerful enough to put humanity on an equal footing with possible future super intelligent computers. Not that it's anywhere close to that yet. In a video Friday obviously aimed at seeking new employees, Musk showed off the second version of the Neuralink, a device about the size of a large coin. It's designed to be put in a person's head. An earlier version of the device has to be placed behind an ear like a huge hearing aid. But the young company is far from having a commercial product, which would involve complex human trials and governmental approval. Friday's video showed three pigs. One, named Gertrude, had a Neuralink device in its brain. Musk, a founder of both the electric car company Tesla Motors and the space-exploration firm SpaceX, has always been worried about that smarter AI machines will outwit humans. His solution? Link our brains to computers so we can keep up with or even win over them in intelligence! Musk urged coders(程序员),engineers and especially people who have actually created a product to apply. "You don't need to have brain experience,“ he said, adding that this is something that can be learned on the job. Connecting a brain up directly to electronics is not new. Doctors have already put similar devices in brains to treat such conditions as Parkinson's disease. In 2016, researchers reported that a man regained some movement in his own hand with a similar brain implant. But Musk's proposal goes beyond this. Neuralink wants to build on those existing medical treatments and work on devices that could link our brains to computers one day. 28. What can we learn about the first version of the Neuralink? A. It is smaller than a hearing aid. B. It can be put in a person's head. C. It has to be placed behind the ear. D. It is already available at the market. 29. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “outwit” in paragraph 6? A. Copy. B. Defeat. C. Understand. D. Destroy. 30. What kind of candidates does Elon Musk particularly want? A. Someone who also wants to create the same device. B. Doctors who already know how to treat brain diseases. C. People who have already designed some unique product. D Engineers who are good at linking brains to computers. 31. Where is this text likely from? A. An advertisement. B. A test report. C. A science fiction. D. A news report. 【答案】28. C 29. B 30. C 31. It's designed to be put in a person's head. An earlier version of the device has to be placed behind an ear like a huge hearing aid.(在周五的一段显然是寻找新员工的视频中,Musk 展示了 Neuralink 的第二版,一枚 大硬币大小的设备。它被设计成放在一个人的头上。该设备的早期版本必须像一个巨大的助听 器一样被放在耳朵后面)”可知,第一版的接口必须挂在耳后。故选 C。 【29 题详解】 词句猜测题。根据下文“His solution? Link our brains to computers so we can keep up with or even win over them in intelligence!( 他的解决方案?把我们的大脑和电脑连接起来,这样我们就能在智 力上跟上它们,甚至战胜它们!)”可推断,Elon Musk 担心人工智能机器人会打败人类。划线词词 义表示“打败”,与 defeat 意思相近。故选 B。 【30 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第七段“Musk urged coders(程序员), engineers and especially people who have actually created a product to apply.( Musk 敦促程序员、工程师,特别是那些实际创造了一种产品 的人来申请。)”可知,Elon Musk 特别垂青那些有独创作品的程序员及工程师。故选 C。 【31 题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“His goal is to develop devices that can provide treatment to neural(神经 的 )diseases-and that may one day be powerful enough to put humanity on an equal footing with possible future super intelligent computers.( 他的目标是开发能够为神经疾病提供治疗的设备—— 这可能有一天足够强大,使人类与未来可能的超级智能计算机处于平等的地位)”以及下文内容可 知,文章主要是对 Elon Musk 在本周五演示录像中展示的产品进行的报道。因此推断这是一篇 新闻报道。故选 D。 D This week, four COVID-19 vaccines have appeared highly effective in preventing the COVID-19 disease and will roll out to market soon. On November 17, Sinovac, a Chinese biotech company, published its promising results from Phase(阶段)1 and 2 trials in the medical journal The Lancet. The data shows that the vaccine, Corona Vac, has produced a very quick and strong immune response and did not cause any severe side effects among the 700 people tested. Sinovac has already started the Phase 3 tests in UAE, Brazil, Indonesia and Bangladesh since July 3. Initial Phase 3 data is likely to be available within the next month. (Update: the Phase 3 tests in UAE have shown that Corona Vac is 86% effective and UAE has officially approved it for nationwide use.) One day earlier, Moderna reported that its vaccine is 94% effective and strongly protects against serious COVID-19 illness. On November 18, Pfizer announced that its vaccine is 95% effective. Britain's Oxford-AstraZeneca group said on November 23 that its vaccine is up to 70% effective. However, Corona Vac may have a series of potential advantages over the mRNA vaccines produced by Moderna and Pfizer and Oxford-AstraZeneca group's DNA vaccines, since there hasn't been any mRNA or DNA vaccines approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before, while Corona Vac is based on a tried-and-true method that uses weakened or dead COVIE-19. Another big advantage for Corona Vac is the storage temperature as it can be stored between 2℃ and 8℃ for up to three years, while the mRNA vaccines have to be kept between -20℃ and -70℃. It would make their storage and distribution really challenging, especially in the developing countries. Although we are seeing lights by the end of the tunnel, it's important to remember that an effective vaccine is not enough to end the crisis quickly, because it will take months to produce enough vaccines and distribute them. Therefore, measures like social distancing, washing hands and wearing face masks will remain essential to control the spread of COVID-19. 32. Which country has agreed to use CoronaVac for all the people? A. UAE. B. Brazil. C. Indonesia. D. Bangladesh. 33. How does Sinovac differ from Pfizer's and Moderna's vaccines? A. It is much more effective. B. It is a kind of mRNA vaccine. C. It is based on a more mature method. D. It has to be stored in extremely low temperature. 34. What is the purpose of the last part of the text? A. To warn the risk of the new vaccines. B. To remind people not to let down their guard. C. To show the difficulty in distributing the vaccines. D. To tell people how to prevent the spread of COVTD-19. 35. What is the text mainly about? A. The differences of the various vaccines. B. The potential advantages of CoronaVac. C. The disadvantages of the mRNA and DNA vaccines. D. The Phase 1 trial results of four COVID-19 vaccines. 【答案】32. A 33. C 34. B 35. B 【解析】 【分析】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要通过与其他三款新冠疫苗对比,说明中国研制的 CoronaVac 疫苗的特点及优点。 【32 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“Update: the Phase 3 tests in UAE have shown that Corona Vac is 86% effective and UAE has officially approved it for nationwide use.(最新消息:在阿联酋(UAE)进行 的第三阶段测试显示,CoronaVac 疫苗的有效性为 86%,阿联酋已正式批准其在全国范围内使用)” 可知,阿联酋已经批准全民注射中国的 CoronaVac 疫苗。故选 A。 【33 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“since there hasn't been any mRNA or DNA vaccines approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before, while CoronaVac is based on a tried-and-true method that uses weakened or dead COVIE-19.(因为在此之前还没有任何 mRNA 或 DNA 疫苗得到美国食 品和药物管理局的批准,而 CoronaVac 疫苗是基于一种可靠的方法,即使用弱化或死亡的 COVIE-19)”可知,Sinovac 与 Pfizer 和 Moderna 的疫苗的不同在于 Sinovac 基于更成熟的制造方 法。故选 C。 【34 题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Although we are seeing lights by the end of the tunnel, it's important to remember that an effective vaccine is not enough to end the crisis quickly, because it will take months to produce enough vaccines and distribute them. Therefore, measures like social distancing, washing hands and wearing face masks will remain essential to control the spread of COVID-19.(尽管我们看 到了曙光,但重要的是要记住,有效的疫苗不足以迅速结束危机,因为生产和分发足够的疫苗 需要几个月的时间。因此,保持社交距离、洗手和戴口罩等措施对控制 COVID-19 的传播仍然 至关重要)”可推知,这篇文章最后一部分的目的是提醒人们不要放松警惕。故选 B。 【35 题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段中“The data shows that the vaccine, Corona Vac, has produced a very quick and strong immune response and did not cause any severe side effects among the 700 people tested.(数 据显示,在接受测试的 700 人中,这种名为 Corona Vac 的疫苗已经产生了非常迅速和强烈的免 疫反应,并且没有造成任何严重的副作用)”结合通读全文可知,本文突出介绍了 CoronaVac 疫苗 的优点,如成熟的制备方法、较高的存储温度等。可知,文章主要内容是 CoronaVac 的潜在优 势。故选 B。 湖北省 2021 届普通高等学校招生全国统一考试模拟演练英语试题 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 2. 5 分,满分 37. 5 分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A School Group Train Travel A fun day out for your school group starts with the train. Sean Anderson is undertaking the David Goggins challenge-running 48 miles in 48 hours—to raise money for the North East Homeless charity. The money raised will fund a Christmas Eve dinner at Newcastle station for those sleeping rough. The challenge requires participants to run four miles every four hours, day and night, with runners clocking up nearly two marathons worth of distance in two days. It takes its name from American fitness ex- pert David Goggins, who is a former Special Troops soldier. Sean Anderson, the self-admitted non — runner, is currently suffering downpours of rain, loss of appetite and arthritic (关节炎 的)pain while covering different routes from his home on England's North-east coast. The Northumbria-based police officer said in a post online that he got the idea from Eddie Izzard, who had recently completed the challenge. The run is brutal for all participants. Dylan Morrissey, Professor of Sports said that it was a very difficult challenge, not one he would advise people to take on without having done a lot of training. He hoped that Anderson would be fine and had some good recovery in terms of sleep, nutrition, hydration and moving a bit in the days afterwards. Anderson's awareness of the homelessness problem in Newcastle City Centre, as well as increasing demands on food banks due to the pandemic(疫情),inspired his decision to run the 4/4/48. Donations of £4. 99 to North East Homeless will fund a Christmas dinner. Anderson has surpassed ( 超 过)his initial fundraising target of £250 pounds by 736 per cent and an out pouring of support. 24. Favorable. C. Cautious. D. Disapproving. C Being big can improve the ability of whales to reach more food and with less effort. That can help them access their deep-sea food that would be beyond the reach of many other creatures. In a new study, scientists estimated how much energy 13 species of whales use and gain during one dive by attaching technology-packed sensors to them. They conclude that how big the creatures get depends on how and what they eat and how much food they can find. Toothed whales, for example dolphins, hunt for individual fish. The whales' size appears to be limited by how much food they can catch during one dive. That's not the case, though, for blue whales and other filter feeders (滤食性动物).They open their mouths wide and bring in a large amount of water — along with whatever in it. Then they push the water back out between big baleen (须)plates. Afterwards, they swallow the food caught behind those plates. These animals tend to be much larger than their toothed cousins. Filter feeders alive today aren't limited by food availability. So they might be limited by other factors, such as how large a body they can physically support. In the last 5 million years , whales have become larger than ever. The blue whale grew into the largest creature ever throughout the history of life. That could be due to changes in glacial cycles, winds-even ocean currents. Those changes have focused upwellings (上涌)of nutrients in pockets of the sea. The nutrients attract a lot of tiny creatures, fish and other animals. And that creates whale food. Being large has helped whales exploit such food treasures in a few ways. Bigger creatures can travel farther using less energy per unit of mass. So big whales can go across wide poor areas of the ocean and reach food-rich upwellings. Larger bodies also support larger lungs. And more air means more time for feeding during dives. These animals might even be on their way to evolving to become bigger still as long as populations of food stay abundant. Perhaps, millions of years from now, we'll see even bigger Ocean giants. 28. How did the scientists get their conclusion? A. By involving hi-tech in tracing whales. B. By analyzing former data of whales. C. By measuring the size of whales. D. By studying the ocean current. 29. What can we learn about filter feeders alive today from the text? A. Dolphins belong to them. B. They include the killer whales. C. Food supplies restrict their size. D. They may grow even larger than before. 30. Which place is the best for blue whales to feed themselves? A. The shallow seas. B. The glacial oceans. C. Upwellings of the sea. D. Poor areas of the ocean. 31, What is the best title for the text? A. Why are some whales so big? B. How do whales get their food? C. Why are there so many kinds of whales? D. What are the differences between whales? D In late March of 2019 , a F-15 student pilot was conducting a training mission. The student made a turn and began to experience G-forces. About six seconds into that turn, the student passed out. Eleven seconds later, after waking up, the pilot controlled his aircraft again and landed safely. He experienced G-induced (弓|起)loss of consciousness? or GLOC. Fighter pilots have two major tools to prevent them from passing out. The first is a tight suit called the G-suit, which presses a pilot's legs and stomach using air pressure, like a blood-pressure cuff (袖带).It connects directly to the jet itself, so the aircraft automatically determines when to involve it, and how much pressure to employ, based on how many Gs the pilot is feeling. The second is a muscle and breathing exercise called the anti-G straining maneuver (抗 G 收紧动作),or AGSM: a pilot will relax and tighten muscles in the legs? stomach, and hip. Both the G-suit and the AGSM work together, keeping the blood in the pilot5s brain and preventing it from pooling down below. Military pilots use these tools while performing maneuvers—such as hard turning—to ensure they stay conscious, and it's very hard physical work. The goal, of course, is to avoid passing out. A pilot who fails may wake up to realize that everything is fine, but it can also lead to a crash. But different factors can cause a pilot to experience a GLOC anyway : the pilot could do the AGSM incorrectly, the equipment could malfunction, or he or she could have a health or medical issue. Dehydration (脱水)can increase a pilot's chances of passing out, too. Before maneuvers that will subject an aircraft and its crew to Gs, pilots complete a "G-awareness exercise”—a series of turns to test whether or not the machine, and people on board, can properly handle the stress. Despite good training, good aircraft, and good procedures , things still happen. It's a very dangerous line of work, and it's the most important to put money and effort towards training and selecting the right people. 32. Why did the new pilot become unconscious during his flight? A. He had a lack of sleep and rest. B. G-forces were overloaded on him. C. He made a mistake in operations. D. The F-15 fighter had a serious problem. 33. How does the G-suit work? A. Pilots open it if necessary. B. It starts working randomly. C. It is controlled by aircrafts. D. People on the ground operate it. 34. Which of the following fails to cause GLOC? A. AGSM. B. Dehydration. C. Health or medical issues. D. Equipment malfunctions. 35. What can be the most important in anti-G measures? A. Producing better aircraft. B. Perfecting flight procedures. C. Creating better training ways. D. Finding pilots better for flying.
