Dear daughters,
Most parents tell their children, “You can be anything you want when you grow up.” I feel the same and I say
5
this often. But I also want you to understand that realizing your dreams comes from hard work, some good luck
and good timing. Here are some words of wisdom for you as you make your way in the world, from an
entrepreneur (企业家) and from your mama.
1. Be open-minded to changing your path along the way
In high school, I wanted to be a politician. I left my hometown and went off to college in Washington, DC.
There, I discovered that I loved to support women. It taught me that I’m creative, a strong leader and great at
marketing. As a result, I moved on to be the head of a national healthcare nonprofit. Becoming a mother while in
that job opened my mind to launching a breast pump bag (储奶袋) business. Now I run a highly successful
company that I started up on my own. I'm not a politician!
2.Failure is critical to your success
Failure can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I’ve had along the way has absolutely made
me better. Failing the big math exam in high school and going to summer school was embarrassing. I eventually
passed, and I’ve never failed an exam again. I learned from that experience to ask for help. Now, I ask for help in
business all the time. I’m proud to be a role model to you as a mom and an entrepreneur. I hope I inspire you to
believe that you can be anything you want. It will be my pleasure to watch your lives unfold before my eyes.
Love,
Your mom

With climate change and overfishing threatening our oceans, it is becoming increasingly important for
researchers to closely observe and check sea animals and plants. However, it’s almost impossible to make it since
human presence scares the animals. Now, thanks to the robot, aka SoFi, researchers may be able to solve the
problem.
Built by MIT’s laboratory, the snow-white remote-controlled robot simulates fish, complete with a flexible
tail that moves from side to side and two “fins (鳍)”.
When the robot is under the sea, a motor is pumping water into a pair of balloon-like rooms located in the
robot’s tail. These rooms operate similarly to the key parts in engines. As one room expands, the tail bends to one
side; when the motor pushes water to the other channel, the tail bends in the other direction. Thus the robot gains
8
the ability to move to where it wants to go.
SoFi solves many of the issues that have affected the usefulness of previous robots --- some types of
autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs)
AUVs traditionally often have had to be tied to a boat because radio frequency communications do not work
well underwater. So researchers use sound waves. The new technology can travel greater distances, allowing
drivers, by using a controller, to pilot SoFi from up to 50 feet away. SoFi can move around the ocean, unaffected
by ropes. Also limiting traditional AUVs’ usefulness is the risk of hitting something, like hard stones. With the
outside made of rubber and plastic that can keep its built-in electronics dry, SoFi can efficiently avoid hitting. So a
soft robot is more likely to survive a potential crisis.
During test dives in Rainbow Reef, SoFi swam alongside the unsuspecting ocean life at depths of 50 feet for
up to 40 minutes at a time, obtaining high-quality photos and videos. More importantly, it was able to do so
without causing any disturbance. Researchers say sometimes the fish would swim alongside the strange-looking
robot in curiosity, while at other times they appeared to completely ignore its existence. “It’s not perfect, but we’re
improving it. Our efforts will pay off,” says Robert Katzschmann.
45. The robot SoFi is created to ________.
A. observe climate change B. help to monitor sea creatures
C. catch fish and observe them D. prevent overfishing in oceans
46. What does the underlined word “simulates” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Is modeled after. B. Is designed for.
C. Is combined with. D. Is applied to.
47. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly written to show?
A. The shape of SoFi. B. The application of SoFi.
C. The structure of SoFi’s tail. D. The theory of SoFi’s movement.
48. The materials for SoFi’s outside help SoFi to ________.
9
A. stay safe underwater B. take high-quality photos
C. stay deeper under the sea D. better attract sea creatures
49. What’s Robert Katzschmann’s attitude towards SoFi?
A. Satisfied. B. Negative. C. Hopeful. D. Neutral.
【答案】45. B 46. A 47. D 48. A 49. C

【45 题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“it is becoming increasingly important for researchers to closely observe and check
sea animals and plants. However, it’s almost impossible to make it since human presence scares the animals. Now,
thanks to the robot, aka SoFi, researchers may be able to solve the problem.

故选 A 项。
【47 题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的内容“When the robot is under the sea, a motor is pumping water into a pair of
balloon-like rooms located in the robot’s tail. These rooms operate similarly to the key parts in engines. As one
room expands, the tail bends to one side; when the motor pushes water to the other channel, the tail bends in the
other direction.
Thus the robot gains the ability to move to where it wants to go.
(这样机器人就能够移动到它想去的地方。)”可以推断,该段是介绍机器鱼 SoFi 在海底向前移动的原理。
故选 D 项。
【48 题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“With the outside made of rubber and plastic that can keep its built-in electronics
dry, SoFi can efficiently avoid hitting. So a soft robot is more likely to survive a potential crisis.(由于外壳由橡胶

潜在的危机中幸存下来。)”可知,制作机器鱼 SoFi 外壳的橡胶和塑料材料可以帮助它在海底安全工作。
故选 A 项。
【49 题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一句 Robert Katzschmann 所说的话“It’s not perfect, but we’re improving it. Our
efforts will pay off.”

It’s good to make mistakes, and here is why.
First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that we are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because
when we are trying new things, we are growing. If we never try anything new, how can we improve? How can we
expand? The simple answer is “We can’t”. Look around us. With very few exceptions, either everything you see in
your physical world or every single detail of every single thing is the result of someone trying something new.
Another good thing about mistakes is this: When we are making mistakes, we are learning. Consider this ---
Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, he
11
said that he had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work.
Finally, when we make a mistake, we are much closer to success. Why? Because when all is said and done,
we will have tried some number of things before we succeeded. Every time we make a mistake, we eliminate one
of those things and are one step closer.
But all this doesn’t mean that we should go through life without considering the consequences of a mistake.
Quite the contrary, when we try something new, we have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the
event that it doesn’t work out the way we want it to, we will be in a position to try again. We all have limited
resources --in the form of time and money -- so we shouldn’t blow them all on one approach to a problem. Realize
that it probably won’t be perfect the first time and allocate these resources appropriately so we can learn, make
corrections, and try it again. Only by accepting and using our mistakes in this way can we make significant
advances in our lives.
There is an old saying that goes, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.” So go forth
and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And prosper.
50. From the second paragraph, we can conclude that ________.
A. mistakes are unnecessary for development B. mistakes let us see our own limits
C. it’s common for people to make mistakes D. making mistakes is better than not trying
51. According to the passage, if we try new things, we can ________.
A. move forward B. never fail C. obtain nothing D. be closer to mistakes
52. The underlined word “eliminate” means ________.
A. make up for B. get rid of C. avoid D. solve
53. According to the article, one thing we should pay attention to about making mistakes is ________.
A. avoiding making the same mistakes B. accepting the outcome willingly
C. making proper arrangements for our next try D. reflecting on the consequences after each mistake
54. The article is mainly about ________.
12
A. how to deal with mistakes B. what benefits making mistakes brings
C. how to achieve success D. how to make use of our mistakes
55. What may the writer probably suggest we say to ourselves when we make a mistake?
A. Never mind, I tried my best. B. That’s all right. I’ll try again.
C. Great! Now I have learned something. D. Look at this mess. Anyone would be upset.
【答案】50. D 51. A 52. B 53. C 54. B 55. C

A few years ago, my younger sister and I were the first to board our flight for Norfolk, Virginia. Just as we
were about to board the plane, a mechanic came out of the aircraft and blocked the door with his arms. He turned
to the flight attendant and hurriedly stated, “We got problems!”
I thought to myself, “Why did I have to be the one to hear that? Why couldn’t I have been at the back of the
line? I didn’t need to know that!” Very soon we were back in the terminal, waiting, and then finally back on the
plane. I waited for the pilot to give an explanation. Pilots take courses to ease passengers’ mind, right? They know
what to say to calm nerves.
Unfortunately, I didn’t think this pilot took that course. Soon his voice thundered throughout the plane,
“Sorry for the delay, ladies and gentlemen. We had no power on the plane. We have a generator on the ground
right now, and we’re going to jump---start the engines. Once we get them going, we’ll get up in the air and head
to Norfolk, and see what happens.”
See what happens? We were going to get up in the air, and see what happens? Couldn’t we have another plan,
one that’s been worked out just a little better?
16
At this point, all I could do was to laugh nervously. One woman started yelling, “Oh no! We’re going to
crash!” There were sighs of desperation and anxiety spreading throughout the cabin. Finally, we got up in the air
thirty minutes later, and what happened? Nothing ---other than thrust (推力) and lift. We arrived in Norfolk, and
no sooner had the wheels touched the ground than a round of applause burst out, as everyone throughout the
airplane breathed a sigh of relief at the same time.
Although, I did sincerely like to have a plan better than “see what happens” worked out when flying --- it
really isn’t such a bad life strategy. Success will never be guaranteed. The best thing you can do is just get up in
the air, and see what happens. Sometimes adjustments would be made in the air, or shall we say, in the middle of
the process.
41. The purpose of the text is to ________.
A. introduce a frightening flight experience
B. prove that taking a plane is dangerous
C. show a way of making plans
D. tell readers a life strategy
42. What event was beyond the author’s expectation?
A. The mechanic explained the problems to the passengers.
B. The pilot said nothing to calm the passengers.
C. The passengers arrived in Norfolk safely.
D. The flight was delayed for half an hour.
43. Having known the problems, many passengers ________.
A. felt desperate and anxious
B. stood up and started yelling
C. waited calmly for the problems to be solved
D. complained about the mechanic’s carelessness
44. From the text we can learn that ________.
A. some passenger were sleeping all the way on the plane
17
B. the passengers arrived in their destination safely as planned
C. the author and his younger sister were the last to board the plane
D. the passengers clapped their hands once the plane landed safely
45. Which opinion would the author most probably hold?
A. To ensure success, don’t get started before you’ve got everything ready.
B. To avoid repeating failure, give yourself all the reasons why you can’t.
C. To set up a business, don’t wait until you have everything you need.
D. To achieve success, try to prepare for the worst.

Each year, millions of children around the world are unable to go to school. To draw attention to this
widespread problem, the United Nations (UN) is putting education first. Recently, the UN screened a
documentary film called Back to School. The film is the second in a series of documentaries (纪录片) for the
project Time for School.
These films follow seven children from seven different countries. This 12-year project began in 2006, when
the children first started school. “This is something we could do to help the education crisis in the world,” said
producer and writer Judy Katz. “Documentary film-makers can get deeply involved in a problem and do
something about it.”
More than 100 million children will never set foot in a school. Sixty percent of those children are girls.
Cheryl Faye, head of the UN Girls Education Initiative, spoke about the many factors that prevent girls from
getting an education. One problem is the long distance many children must travel to get to school. Also, girls in
many cultures are traditionally expected to marry early and work to help their families. “We need to make a
special effort for girls,” Faye said.
As part of the UN’s Millennium goals, the organization wants every single child to get at least an elementary
education by 2018.
Students from Lawrence Middle School in New York were deeply moved after they saw the film. The seventh
grade class is raising money to help build a library on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya (肯尼亚), where Joab—a
child in the documentary—lives. The class teacher, Karen Weiner, and the class are known in their school as the
“Kenya crew”. All the kids were really happy to support Joab and said they felt great about their fund-raising
efforts. Like the seventh graders at Lawrence Middle School, kids can work together to make a difference in
18
places like Nairobi. By raising money for education, kids can help children on the other side of the world have a
chance of a better, happier life.
46.What’s the purpose of the UN screening the documentary film Back to School?

I’ve just got to talk about this problem I’m having with my postman. It all began a year ago, after the birth of
his first child. Not wanting to appear rude, I asked him about the baby. The next week, not wanting him to think I
had asked out of mere politeness the week before. I asked all about the baby again. Now I can’t break the habit. I
freeze whenever I see him coming. The words “How’s the baby?” come out on their own. It holds me up. It holds
him up. So why can’t I stop it? The answer is that I want him to like me. Come to think of it, I want everyone to
like me.
My sister had the same problem with the caretaker of her block of flats: “All he ever does is complain; he
talks at me rather than to me, never listen to a word I say, and yet for some reason I’m always really nice to him.
I’m worried in case I have a difficulty one day, and he won’t lift a finger to help.”
What about at work? Richard Lawton, a management trainer, warns: “Those managers who are actually liked
by most of their staff are always those to whom being liked is not the primary goal. The qualities that make
managers popular are being honest with staff, treating them as human beings and observing common politeness
like saying hello in the morning.” To explain the point, Richard mentions the story of the company chairman who
desperately wanted to be liked and who, after making one of his managers fired, said with moist (湿润的) eyes
that he was so, so sorry the man was leaving. The employee replied” “If you were that sorry, I wouldn’t be
leaving.” The lesson being, therefore, that if you try too hard to be liked, people won’t like you.
The experts say it all starts in childhood. “If children feel they can only get love from their parents by being
good,” says Zelda West-Meads, a marriage guidance consultant, “they develop low self-confidence and become
compulsive (难以抑制的) givers.” But is there anything wrong in being a giver, the world not being exactly short
of takers? Anne Cousins believes there is. “There is a point at which giving becomes unhealthy,” she says. “It
comes when you do things for others but feel bad about it.”
I am now trying hard to say to people “I feel uncomfortable about saying this, but...”, and tell myself
“Refusal of a request does not mean rejection of a person” and I find I can say almost anything to almost anyone.

53.Managers are more likely to be popular if they ________.
A.help the staff with their problems
B.make sure the staff do not lose their jobs

A material that is able to self-repair even when it is cut in two has been created by French researchers.
The new material is invented by a team headed by Ludwik Leibler at France’s National Center for Scientific
Research(CNRS)and a private firm, Arkema. "It can self-heal at the room temperature in around fifteen minutes
by simply pressing the damaged pieces together, "they report in the British weekly science journal Nature.
A piece of normal rubber can stretch and then recover to its original size and shape. The new rubber achieves
the same elasticity(弹性)by using a mixture of two different kinds of smaller molecules. The bonds(键)between
the molecules in the material, called hydrogen bonds, are what give the new rubber its self-healing ability. They
form linear(线状的) links, called chains, between some molecules, as well as cross-links between those chains,
creating a giant network of smaller molecules.
The result is a substance that at eight degrees centigrade becomes a glassy plastic that, like soft rubber, can
be pulled to five times its length before breaking. Unlike rubber, though, the pieces can be mended at room
temperature (twenty degrees centigrade) without the need for them to be heated or even pressed together
strongly. And the substance can be easily reprocessed.
The ingredients of the new material include fatty acids(脂肪酸) made from ordinary vegetable oils, combined
with urea( 尿 素 ), both cheap and common chemicals. The French researchers are already making several
kilograms in their laboratories and say the process is almost completely green.
American chemist Krzysztof Matyjaszewski of Carnegie Mellon University praises the researchers use of a
simple and renewable resource--vegetable oil --as a source of fatty acids. He says previous self-healing material
systems have generally relied on complex chemistry and processing
Arkema is planning to develop commercial products based on the new supramolecular chemical technology.
41. Compared with normal rubber, the new rubber_______.
A. will be more expensive B. has more elasticity
C. is difficult to produce D. can mend itself if damaged
42. After being cut, the new rubber can heal itself with________.
A. hydrogen bonds B. cross—links C. chains D. atoms

A. the color of the new material is green
B. the rubber does no harm to human health
C. green light is needed when making the rubber
D. green vegetables are needed to produce fatty acids
45. Matyjaszewski’s attitude towards the future of the new material might be_______.
A. critical B. doubtful C. optimistic D. worried

After the death of my mother a few years ago I found myself struggling to deal with my grief, and that of my
father. It was two days before Christmas when mum died and that made me feel heartbroken. Mentally, I became
distanced from everything: I shut down my grief and focused on dealing with the practical stuff---just surviving
each day. The problem was that every time I tried to ignore my grief, the pain and loss came back. I even started
to avoid the places that my mother and I used to visit so much together.
I realized that was not a good way to be, and went looking for anything that could help me deal with it. I
wanted to understand why I was acting the way I was. I visited many psychologists and the local priest. They
were friendly and helpful people but I quickly realized that they simply put forward the same information over
and over again, expecting me to just accept it and “get over” my grief. There was no information available about
why I and my father were reacting, nor about what to do, how to understand and move forward.
I was determined to understand what my father and I were going through so I started to do my own research.
I read many books on grief and spoke to other people who were also in the process of dealing with grief. As I did
that, I came to understand that, at some stage in our lives, we all face the loss of someone, or something, that
we care greatly about. I also realized that in almost every case, there is absolutely nothing that we can do to
25
prevent that loss, or change the circumstances in which it occurs. Unavoidably, we all must deal with the fact that,
no matter how painful we feel by the loss, the world around us will go on as if nothing has changed.
46. The main idea of the passage is about _____.
A. the experience of dealing with grief B. the pain of losing one’s loved person
C. the books about healing one’s grief D. the information from experts

A. Because her mother died a few years ago.
B. Because she suffered the grief of losing his father.
C. Because she intended to be out of grief.

A. not visiting the places her mother and she used to go to
B. trying to forget the grief and loss of mother
C. seeking for advice from experts
D. frequently talking with her father
49. How does the author feel about the information from psychologists and the local priest?
A. Quite practical but meaningless. B. Helpful but impracticable.
C. Of no use and no value. D. Interesting and practical.
50. From the last paragraph we can learn that _____.
A. losing someone or something is an unavoidable test in life.
B. books can help people solve all kinds of problems
26
C. doing something can prevent losing
D. people’s loss can affect the surrounding deeply
D
Most of us pay a lot of attention to others. But we forget to look deeper into ourselves. If you’re not feeling
good about your life, wake up now. you can change the course of your life by becoming your own life coach.
Life coaching is a profession in some Western countries It helps people identify and achieve personal goals in
life, work and relationships, Clients( 顾 客 )ire a life coach and speak to them each week The coach usually
examines what is going on in the person's life to find out what the obstacles or challenges might be. The coach
helps them choose a course of action to make their life what they want it to be.
Start by writing down decisions you've made that turned out OK. Next, list decisions you've made that you
regret. As you make your lists, notice the power of a decision. Sit down and take time to think about the different
decisions you might make. Decision-making power constitutes most of the power you have in life.
Coach yourself with words of self-encouragement that give you strength. Talk to yourself to focus your energy
in the right direction.
Jeff Brunson is a professional life coach. Everything you choose in life should be based on what you value, "he
says. "It takes time to look within to figure this out. "Jeff’s philosophy is this: If you value sincerity and honesty,
don't hang out with dishonest people if you value home life, don't marry a party animal.
Coaching yourself is about choosing better thoughts to make sure you have personal power. You can choose
better thoughts by “reframing”. This is where you go back in life to heal something from the past.
It works like this:
-----Select something negative that happened to you. choose an event you would not want to live through
again.
----Try to find good things from the bad event. For example, if your home was lost in a flood, write down all
the good deeds your neighbors performed.
27
Now revisit a bad event and see how much of it you can “reframe”.
51. What’s the main idea of this passage?

A. Coach Yourself B. Decision-making Power
C. Focus Your Energy D. Give You Strength

Long ago, poems were recited out loud instead of being written down. Back when the Greeks first started
the Olympics, they held poetry contests as well as athletic competitions.
Now, poetry competitions have been revived. This year 120,000 high school students competed in the first
Poetry Out Loud national recitation contest, performing poems from memory for $100,000 in prizes.
The first competitions were held in classrooms. The winners went on to schoolwide contests, and then
they competed in city and state competitions, and then the 50 state champions, along with the District of
Columbia champion came to Washington, D. C. last week for the last showdown(对决). After the 51 champions
30
competed against one another,12 went on to the finals. Then the field was narrowed to five. The final five had
one last chance to "perform" a poem. The overall champ, Jackson Hille, a high school senior from Ohio, won a
$20,000 scholarship.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation started Poetry Out Loud because they
realized that hearing a poem performed is a different experience from reading it on a page.
It's not just a matter of saying the words in the right order. It's the tone of voice, the pauses, the gestures,
and the attitude of the person performing that bring the words to life. "Each time we hear somebody recite a
poem, we understand again what we found fresh and interesting about it,” says National Public
Radio broadcaster Scott Simon, master of ceremonies for the finals. Hearing it in a new voice offers something
new to the listener.
Not only do the people hearing poems have a new experience, memorizing and presenting poems helps
the participants understand those poems in a new way. Another benefit of a competition such as Poetry Out
Loud is that the participants learn public-speaking skills that can help them for life.

It was the summer of 1965. Deluca, then 17, visited Peter Buck, a family friend. Buck asked DeLuca about
his plans for the future. "I' m going to college, but I need a way to pay for it," DeLuca recalls saying. "Buck said,
'You should open a sandwich shop. '"
That afternoon, they agreed to be partners. And they set a goal: to open 32 stores in ten years. After doing
some research, Buck wrote a check for $ 1,000. DeLuca rented a storefront (店面) in Connecticut, and when
they couldn't cover their start-up costs, Buck kicked in another $ 1,000.
But business didn't go smoothly as they expected. DeLuca says, "After six months, we were doing poorly,
but we didn't know how badly, because we didn't have any financial controls." All he and Buck knew was that
their sales were lower than their costs.
Deluca was managing the store and going to the University of Bridgeport at the same time. Buck was
working at his day job as a nuclear physicist in New York. They'd meet Monday evenings and brainstorm ideas for
32
keeping the business running. "We convinced ourselves to open a second store. We figured we could tell the
public, 'We are so successful, we are opening a second store.' "And they did--in the spring of 1966. Still, it was a
lot of learning by trial and error.
But the partners' learn-as-you-go approach turned out to be their greatest strength. Every Friday, DeLuca
would drive around and hand - deliver the checks to pay their suppliers." It probably took me two and a half
hours and it wasn't necessary, but as a result, the suppliers got to know me very well, and the personal
relationships established really helped out." DeLuca says.
And having a goal was also important. "There are so many problems that can get you down. You just have
to keep working toward your goal," DeLuca adds.
DeLuca ended up founding Subway Sandwich, the multimillion -dollar restaurant chain.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that
it is responsible for social progress and prosperity (繁荣). Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one
person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at
tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often live-and-death affairs. In their single-minded
pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a
culture which only values the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame
competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their
parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek
failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it
doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they
had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this
belief is the same as that of true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief
that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being
valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to disappear (缓解)can we discover a new meaning
34
in competition.
51. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. Competition helps to set up self-respect
B. Opinions about competition are different among people
C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development
D. Failures are necessary experience in competition
52. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?
A. It pushes society forward B. It builds up a sense of duty
C. It improves personal abilities D. It encourages individual efforts.
53. The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means_____
A. those who try their best to win
B. those who value competition most highly
C. those who are against competition most strongly
D. those who rely on others most for success
54. What is the similar belief of the true competition and those with a “desire to fail”?
A. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others
B. One’s success in competition needs great efforts
C. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills
D. One’s success is based on how hard he has tried
55. Which point of the view may the author agree to?
A. Every effort should be paid back
35
B. Competition should be encouraged
C. Winning should be a life-and –death matter
D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

Massachusetts today looks nothing like it did when the first English settlers arrived. Back in the 17th
century, forest blanketed the land. Today, roads and towns cover much of the area. But the past is not dead
and gone. Just an hour’s drive from Boston lies Plymouth Plantation.
There you’ll experience the 17th century life from the days of the Pilgrims (清教徒). You can look in
the Pilgrims’ homes, watch the way t hey cook, and ask them about their daily lives. You can even help
them build houses or work in the fields.
When you arrive at Plymouth, you are greeted with “How do you fare?” instead of “How are you?”
In this living history plantation, actors portray (展现) real people of 17th century in Plymouth. Each actor
has taken the identity of someone from that period.
All the actors speak the language of Shakespeare. They’re h appy to talk about the hardships of their
lives or just share the gossip of the day. But don’t try to discuss modern topics. They won’t understand
what you are talking about!
In fall, you can enjoy a harvest dinner very similar to the First Thanksgiving. You’ll dine with your
hands like Pilgrims. You’ll find no pepper on the table. This expensive spice was used only sparingly (节俭
地) in the cooking. You’ll find no last-course “dessert”, either. At that time, people ate sweet dishes right
along with the meal.
Cranberries were on the menu then and still are today. A short distance from Plymouth, you can visit
Cranberry World. At this unique museum, you’ll see how cranberries are harvested and can taste different
cranberry products.
Of course, the First Thanksgiving included not only the Pilgrims, but also their Wampanoag guests. If
you want to find out something about the Wampanoag, explore the recreated Wampanoag Homesite. It is
36
just a short walk from Plymouth. Step into the Native American home and enter a different world. Native
Americans dressed in 17th century. Wampanoag outfits (服装) describe how their people lived 400 years
ago. Outside, you can help make a traditional boat or learn about native plant remedies.[
Much in Massachusetts has changed since the 17th century. But in Plymouth, the past lives on.
36. What do you know about Plymouth Plantation?
A. It is a cranberry plantation in Plymouth.
B. It is where some old Pilgrims are still living.
C. It presents the Pilgrims’ life in the 1600s.
D. It is a plantation dating back to the 1700s.[来源:学,科,网]
37. What did the English settlers greet each other in the 17th century?

Washington teacher Tammie Schrader is very enthusiastic about computer games in education. She
thinks they can be used to teach programming skills which will help students to learn in middle school.
37
Canadian teacher Justin Holladay wrote a few simple games to help his students practice math skills. When
the games became popular, he started his own company to create more of them. And the University of
Washington’s Zoran Popovic got more than 4,000 Washington students to master linear equations (线性方
程) this spring by playing a computer game for just a few hours.
The growing availability of inexpensive computers and a new generation of young teachers who grew
up playing on computers have inspired interests in games for serious purposes.
“Six or seven years ago , selling games to schools was brutal (唐突的),” said David Martz of Muzzy
Lane Software, a Boston, US company that produces games for publishers such as McGraw-Hill. “Now,” he
said, “schools are interested in the promise of games.” Software and education companies have tried for
many years to combine youngsters’ passion for computer games with educational progress, without much
success. Zoran Popovic thinks the first efforts to combine games with education fell flat because they were
created by commercial companies. These companies were more interested in selling products than seeing
students master a skill.
Teachers say there are some pretty good games in the marketplace now. Holladay, a math teacher from
Alberta, Canada, began moving paper-based math games to the ipad, building games that allowed students
to compete with each other and give him instant feedback on their progress. The games reinforced (加强)
the lessons he was teaching, and his students had fun playing. He said, “ They were a lot more engaged.”

We were standing at the top of a church tower. My father had brought me to this spot in a small town
not far from our home in Rome. I wondered why.
“Look down, Elsa,” Father said. I gathered all my courage and looked down. I saw the square in the
center of the village. And I saw the criss-cross (十字形) of the twisting, turning streets leading to the square.
“See, my dear.” Father said gently, “There is more than one way to the square. Life is like that. If you can’t
get to the place where you want to go by one road, try another.”
Now I understand why I was there. Earlier that day I had begged my mother to do something about
the awful lunches that were served at school. But she refused because she could not believe the lunches were
as bad as I said.
When I turned to Father for help, he would not interfere (干涉). Instead, he brought me to this high
tower to give me a lesson. By the time we reached home, I had a plan.[来源:学_科_网 Z_X_X_K]
At school the next day, I secretly poured my luncheon soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I
asked our cook to serve it to Mother at dinner. The plan worked perfectly. She swallowed one spoonful and
sputtered, “The cook must have gone mad!” Quickly I told what I had done, and Mother stated firmly that
she would take up the matter of lunches at scho ol the next day!
In the years that followed I often remembered the lesson Father taught me. I began to work as a
fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn’t stop working until I tried every possible means to reach my goal.

Stop wasting your time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the
seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds
40
grow.
The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the human mind. Success is a choice and not
a chance. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.
You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem (自尊). Your level of self-esteem is
always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life.
People with low self-esteem do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They
are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.
You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for
whatever happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident while successful people
realize that they ar e responsible.
Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We
are responsible for what we consciously choose to accept and believe. Thoughts and beliefs cause everything.
Our attitudes and actions are a result of habits ingrained in us over a period of time. One generally rises to
the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success depends upon our
level of confidence. We are responsible for either reinforcing (强化) good habits or kicking bad habits and
consciously replacing them with consistently practiced good habits.
If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the
contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing (培育) the seeds
that contain future victory, born from setbacks.
In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are
responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.
