● Once upon a time, a daughter complained to her father that her life was difficult and
unhappy and that she didn't know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting
and struggling all the time. As one problem was solved, another soon followed. It seemed
that the problems would never end.
● Her father, a cook, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and put each
on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he put potatoes in one pot, eggs in the
second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot.
●
● He then let them boil and sat down, without saying a word to his daughter.
The daughter, continued to complain and impatiently waited, wondering what he
was doing.
● After twenty minutes, he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of
the pot and put them in a bowl. He pulled the boiled eggs out and put them in a
bowl. He then scooped the coffee out and put it in a cup. Turning to her daughter,
he asked, “My dear, what do you see now?”
● “Potatoes, eggs and coffee,” she answered without thinking for a while.
● “Look closer,” the father said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did so and
found that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After
pulling off the shell, she saw the hardboiled egg. Finally, he asked her to taste
the coffee. Its rich aroma(芳香) brought a smile to her face.
● “Dad, what does this really mean?” she asked.
● The father then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each
faced the same suffering—the boiling water. However, each reacted differently.
The potatoes were strong and hard, but in boiling water, they became soft and
weak. The eggs were fragile(易碎的), with the thin outer shells protecting their
liquid inside until they were put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the eggs
became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were special. After they were put
in the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new—coffee.
● 1. 应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
● Paragraph 1:
● “Which are you?” he asked. “When sufferings knock on your door,
how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or the ground coffee
beans?”
●Paragraph 2:
● Finally, the father nodded and taught his daughter a lesson about life.
Which are you?’ he asked. ‘When sufferings
knock on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or the ground
coffee beans?’”。
Finally, the father nodded and taught his daughter a
lesson about life.”

● Paragraph 1:
● “Which are you?” he asked. “When sufferings knock on your door, how do you
respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or the ground coffee beans?” After thinking for
a while, the daughter, answered, “Father, I seem to understand something. Faced
with sufferings, we should make the right choice, be brave and find the best solution
to go through them, like the ground coffee beans. Unlike the potatoes and eggs, they
give in to the suffering and are just changed by them.”
● Paragraph 2:
● Finally, the father nodded and taught his daughter a lesson about life.
In life, different things happen around us, to us, but the only thing that truly
matters is what happens within us. When unhappy things happen, don't complain.
We should keep a good attitude and try to improve ourselves and positively affect
others and then change our difficult situations. Someday, we will find a newer and
better version of ourselves.
From the first week of high school, my best
friend, Tina, was always going out with the popular girls. At first I thought, “It's
okay. She's just making new friends.” But soon I realised that Tina wasn't
interested in me any more. I'd lost my best friend. It really hurt me.
● One day, I told Tina that we should stop pretending to be friends when we really weren't
any more. I wasn't trying to make her mad, but she was. After that, Tina started talking
about me behind my back, telling people that I was bad. Some of our friends were on her
side. I felt like she was taking them away from me.
● The more I thought about it, the angrier I got. Finally, I took up a picture of Tina and
drew lines on her face. I wrote “I hate this person” across the bottom. And then I did
something I'll always regret: I put it on a website which I thought was popular. I thought
people would see it, and it felt good to work off the anger. A week later, Tina's mum saw
the picture. She called my mum, who made me take it off the website right away. However,
it was already too late. Lots of people had seen it, and I was in a lot of trouble. That
whole day, I felt terrible. I had to say sorry to Tina face to face. She said she accepted
my apology, but I felt she was still angry with me.
首先要描述作者当前内心的心理活动,例如“it was the end
of the world, fear”等,可以表现当前作者懊悔、害怕的心情,并描述一下以前和Tina在一起的

● Posting that picture was one of the worst decisions I had ever made. I felt it was
the end of the world. I feared I would lose my best friend forever so that I lay
awake late the night, with some happy times we had spent together flashing in my
mind. I came to realize I could have found a much better way to deal with my
feelings. If I'd just told Tina how much I valued her, maybe things would have
turned out different. Without any delay, I posted a letter of my sincere apology to
Tina and my friends, together with a photo of both of us singing happily at the last
New Year's party, hoping Tina would be my best friend again.
