China shows that its possible to rise from the rubble of wars, humiliation,
famines, and poverty. China is essentially a rags-to-riches story. A spectacular
success of human determination in the face of overwhelming odds.
For the countries in the Asian continent and perhaps in Africa and Latin
America as well, China shows that with concerted human effort development
and progress is possible. In a span of 70 or so years, China went on to become
a global economic powerhouse and world leader from a divided dirt poor
country. Even to those countries that China does not help in some ways, it
does by being a beacon of progress.
To lift 850 million out of absolute poverty in forty years is unprecedented
in the history of the world. And China deserves a huge appreciation for that.
While China has economics as its supreme interest in its dealings with all
foreign countries, it seems to be genuinely wanting to help poor countries to
develop and prosper. China is still seen as a benevolent power compared to
the USA, the outgoing world leader.
And the Chinese have a plan and they are doggedly pursuing it. I watched
a documentary series on CGTN titled China’ s Mega Projects. Each episode
deals with China’s plans for energy, food security, transportation, etc.: Honest
about their past achievements and bold in their targets for the future. Given
their track record of the past forty years, I am sure the Chinese are going to
achieve all of them.
One incident comes to mind. Fifteen years ago, I was in my village in
Western Nepal. One of my relatives had come to visit us. He brandished a
brand new phone, tied to his body with a chain. Obviously, most of the
questions targeted at him were about this expensive-looking, shiny black cell
phone. His exact words. “thanks to China, I could afford this phone. Do you
think we could have such phones or clothes or thermos flasks without them?”.
If not for the cheap Chinese goods, the world's poor could not afford to buy
many many things they desperately need.
Personally, there are so many things I love about China: Taoism, art,
architecture, food, nature, folk music, and Liziqi.
China has its problems and is no heaven on earth. It is neither exactly like
your or my country. It is different in so so many ways. Nonetheless, I want it to
prosper and help other countries prosper as well.

How do Koreans in Seoul treat foreigners generally?

I lived in Seoul as an exchange student along with other hundreds of
students who came from various countries, and I could tell that the students
were favoring the westeners, even though there was buddy system.
The westerners didn ’ t even need to say hi to get many friendship
opportunities, while the Asian foreigners like me was kind of invisible for them.
They just told us to call them if we needed something from them, which I
guess was done out of formality.
The same thing happened in the classes. Some Korean students, usually
the popular type of students with a bunch of cool experiences, would
approach the Westerners and got along well with them. The rest was pretty
much chill or didn ’ t care at all about hanging out with foreigners. But of
course, Asian foreigners like me were generally invisible to both types.
I’m not saying that they were racist. I understand that they look up to
Western countries and its people more since they represent their dream and
desire (I knew many of them were looking for internships in Europe or
America). But it made an impression to me that some of them were more
friendly to people who gave them more advantages, since it’s clear as day
how different the treatments were toward Asian or African foreigners and
Western foreigners.
In the other side, there were also many genuine Korean people that I met.
They were usually the chill or shy types who didn’t want to deal with strangers
or simply didn’t like to speak foreign languages. Within some interactions in
class, I met some people who were interested in hanging out with me outside
of the class. Our communication wasn’t very smooth due to language barrier,
but they made an effort to grow a friendship with me.
So, in general, their treatment depends on where you come from.
Urgency: Environmental Pollution
As soon as we got to Beijing for Spring Festival years ago, we entered a city
shrouded in a thick blanket of fog and haze, where people could hardly breathe
under the dark sky, wearing gauze masks, hats, scarves and glasses, rushing and
searching among the crowd.
Before long, I was horrified to know that two of my best friends had just died of
lung cancer, including the well-known photographer Mr. Deng Wei, who had been a
very disciplined person, never touchingcigarettes or alcohol. Over the past twenty
years of our friendship, we shared the same experience of applying to study abroad,
among many other things, and had frequent contact even overseas. The constant
heavy air pollution in Beijing over past decades shouldn’t be ruled out as one of the
causes of his sudden death, according to his family.
It was thought the detrimental effects of environmentalpollution are still in
somewhere rather remote from where we are, given the magnitude of the earth in
relation to our tiny beings. Now the pain is so piercing! It’s happening in no other
places but here.
There are different causes to blame for the current pollution, such as the
density of urban population, the ever-crowded private cars, the irrational use of
energy and extensive production and operation and so on.
Considering the fundamental relations between man and the natural world,
economic development and the quality of life, however, pollution of this kind in my
view has been attributedto imbalanced development.
