All I’ve ever wanted is for Julie Baker to
leave me alone. For her to back off — you know,
just give me some space.
It all started the summer before second
grade when our moving van( 家 具 搬 运 车 )
pulled into her neighborhood. Did we invite her
to get into our moving van and start climbing all
over boxes? No! But that’s exactly what she did,
taking over and showing off like only Julie
Baker can.
My dad tried to stop her. “Hey!” he said as she was jumping on board. “What are you doing?
You’re getting dirt everywhere!”
She didn’t leave, though. I nstead, she planted herself on the floor and started pushing a big box
with her feet. “Don’t you want some help?” She looked my way. “It sure looks like you need it.”
“Hey! Don’t do that,” my dad warned her. “There are some really valuable things in that box.”
“Oh. Well, how about this one?” She moved swiftly over to another box and looked my way again.
“We should push it together!”
“No, no, no!” my dad said, then pulled her up by the arm. “Why don’t you run along home? Your
mother’s probably wondering where you are.”
“Oh, my mom knows where I am. She said it was fine.” Then she pointed across the street and
said, “We just live right over there.”
My father looked to where she was pointing and sighed(叹息), “Oh, boy.” Then he looked at me
and winked(眨眼) as he said, “Bryce, isn’t it time for you to go inside and help your mother?”
I knew right off what that meant, and man, he didn’t have to wink twice. I smiled and said, “Sure
thing!” then jumped off the liftgate and headed for my new front door.
I heard her coming after me but I couldn’t believe it. Maybe it just sounded like she was running
after me; maybe she was really going other way. But before I took up the courage to look, she ran
right past me, grabbed my arm and fiercely pulled me along.
This was too much. I stopped running and was about to tell her to get lost when the weirdest(诡
异的) thing happened. I was making this big circle move to break away from her, but somehow my
hand ended up tangling(缠结) into hers. I couldn’t believe it. There I was, holding the dirty monkey’s
hand!
I tried to shake her off, but she just held on tight and pulled me along, saying, “Come on!”

I have received many Christmas gifts over the years. The best gift I ever received was presented
to me by a stranger. I never even knew his name and I only had contact with him for less than 60
seconds. His Christmas present to me changed the way I think about people and about Christmas.
I hate Black Friday sales. It’s often a gathering of people who are there for many different reasons.
Some are looking for a deal on that one item for their loved one, or perhaps themselves. Their
purposes completely have nothing to do with the festive time of year, and can just be summed up with
one word, “Cheap!”
It was several years ago when my wife asked me to meet her at the local department store on
Black Friday morning. They had advertised a child’s bike that she wanted to purchase for our son. We
stood with a very large crowd, waiting for the manager to blow the whistle(口哨). I told my wife that
if we got a bike, fine, but if we did not, I was OK with that too.
As the number of bikes began to gradually decrease, I saw my “polite” opportunity to reach my
hands around the corner of one of the boxes. I lifted it and suddenly felt some mild resistance(阻力). I
looked up to see one of the largest gentlemen I had ever seen in my life. Frightening was not the word
to describe his appearance. He was wearing lots of straps of metal spiked leather(带有柳钉的皮带)
around both arms and even his neck. Still, tattoos(纹身) were an obvious love of his.
I started to return the box but he gently pushed it back in my direction and back into my hands.
He then directed it into my shopping cart. He looked at me, smiled, and said, “Merry Christmas.” All
the way home I was thinking that this moment was by far the best Christmas gift I had ever received.
The kindness of a stranger that broke all prejudice(偏见) I may have had of certain types of people.
The softness of a human heart can be seen in a simple act. I will never forget it.
25. What may be the best title of the passage?
A. The Best Christmas Gift. B. A Child’s Bike.
C. Black Friday Sales. D. A Handsome Stranger.
26. Why do many people go to Black Friday sales?
A. Because they can make money.
B. Because they hope to find a bargain.
C. Because it’s a way to celebrate Christmas.
D. Because it’s a place to get things free of charge.
27. What does the underlined word “purchase” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. devote B. solve C. buy D. save
28. What can we learn from the passage?
A. All roads lead to Rome.
B. It’s never too old to study.
C. You cannot clap with one hand.
D. Men cannot be judged by their appearances.

If you are hungry, what do you do? Have your favorite meal and stay quiet after that? Just like
your stomach, your mind is also hungry. But it never lets you know, because, you keep it busy thinking
about your friends or favorite stars. So it silently serves your needs and never lets itself grow. When
mind loses its freedom to grow, creativity(创造性) sets a full stop. This might be the reason why we
all sometimes think “What happens next?”, “Why can’t I think?”[
Hunger of the mind can be actually solved through wide reading. Why reading but not watching
TV? It is because reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from childhood. Since it
develops other ways of our life, we have to take help from reading.
Once you read a book, you run your eyes through the lines and your mind tries to explain
something to you. The interesting part of the book is stored in your mind as a seed(种子). Now this
seed is unknowingly used by you to develop new ideas. If it is used many times, the same seed can
give you great help to relate a lot of things, which you would have never thought of in your wildest
dreams!
This is nothing but creativit y. Also this makes a huge contribution to your vocabulary. Within no
time you can start talking with your friends in English or any other language and never run out of the
right words.
So guys, do give food for your thoughts by reading, reading and more reading. Now what are you
waiting for? Go and get a book!

Chinese netizens are known for coming up with strange and creative terms(术语) for people and
things making the news and they spread like wildfire.
From “skinny blue mushrooms” to “melon-eating masses”, the BBC takes a look at what has
caught their imaginations this year.
Sichuan Trump
US President-elect Donald Trump is known as “chuanpu” by mainstream media outlets.
But the conspiracy theory(阴谋论), spread on social networks Weibo and WeChat, is that Trump
was born in 1946 in Sichuan when his father set up a business in China.
It’s nonsense of course, but that hasn’t stopped some locals from viewing him as “the pride of
Sichuan” — though his recent speech attacks against China.
Prehistoric powers
National swimmer Fu Yuanhui not only won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympic Games, but also
scored a win with viewers in China in a TV interview.
When told she could fight for the final, Fu pulled a funny face and said, “I have used all my
prehistoric powers to swim!”
‘Prehistoric powers’, or “honghuangzhili”, was soon used as a term for an unstoppable f orce,
while Fu became an internet darling.
Skinny blue mushroom
One man’s misfortune in love turned out to be a goldmine for netizens, when a man from Guangxi
province uploaded a video of himself talking about his loneliness while his girlfriend was away.
“Unbearable, I want to cry,” he moaned – but thanks to his heavy accent, it ended up sounding
more like “skinny blue mushroom”.
“Lanshouxianggu” was then shared more widely and took off as a meme, mostly as a way to
make fun of the southern Guangxi accent.
Melon-eating masses
The fullest expression of this term is “the melon-eating masses who don’t know what’s really
going on”.
Its origin is unclear, but netizens often use this — sometimes derogatorily( 带 贬 义 地 ) — to
describe a passive group of bystanders at a major incident or event.
33. The passage is mainly talking about .
A. Chinese netizens’ life
B. the imaginations of BBC’s news
C. BBC’s new terms in its vocabulary
D. strange words created by Chinese netizens
34. What can be used to replace the underlined word “nonsense”?
A. unreal. B. certain C. logical D. universal
35. can be used to describe someone who has no idea what’s going on.
A. Sichuan Trump B. Prehistoric powers
C. Skinny blue mushroom D. Melon-eating masses

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
A student does not know any of the answers on a test. All the questions on the answer page
are unfamiliar to him, and when the results come back, the student realizes that he has failed.
36 . By copying the work of others, he can ruin his grade as well as his future.
Most people have cheated at least once in their lives, whether it was for missed or incomplete
work, or even just for credit (分数) that they didn’t deserve. 37 . It shows less
responsibility as well as less knowledge. For example, if a student cheats using a classmate’s
exam paper, he is taking credit for another’s work. If the teacher catches him, the consequence
(后果) is usually failure.
Cheating by using the work of others is the same as ruining your life with drugs. If a student
continues cheating, then it may become a habit in the future. 38 . We all have
brains that we can use, and also, our teachers and parents can help us.
39 . In the beginning when the student is in primary school, cheating may
only lead to losing credit. In middle school, there will be parent-teacher conferences. But in high
school, college, and the rest of a person’s life, cheating will not be ignored.[来源:Z.Com]
Of all things, taking credit for other people’s work is not only unnecessary, but quite unreasonable
as well. If we all just do our work, then there is no need to cheat. 40 .
A. But taking the work of others and using it as your own is not the right thing to do.
B. They can just tell their parents the truth.
C. This is the situation for those who copy their homework from others.
D. There is no need to ruin both your health and your mind.
E. Besides, no one needs to cheat.
F. People who cheat usually have to face the consequences.
G. We should make an effort during our education instead of taking the easy way out.

Dear Mr. Smith,
I am very glad to hear that you are interested in “English-themed Month” held in our school. This is
the first time that all the students have enjoyed so many amazing activities concerning English subject in
one month. I would feel so proud to introduce all of them to you.
For one thing, we had some activities aimed at improving our basic skills in learning English, such as
English Handwriting Training, English Vocabulary Competition and English Corner. For another, we also
had a competition on designing an English-themed blackboard newspaper in our classrooms, which
encouraged students’ teamwork and creativity as well as more exposure to English culture. As for the
English Learning Strategies Lecture, our lovely English teacher Bro. Biao gave us an interesting lecture on
how to learn English itself as a foreign language rather than just a subject, after which I felt more confident
in learning English well. For me, my favorite part was of course the English Talent Show, where many
students showed themselves and enjoyed the performances with each other, some singing English songs,
some acting out English plays and so on.
I’m so sure you would have felt very excited if you had come for this party. So, I’m really looking
forward to your coming and joining us next time!
Yours
sincerely
