Buy Nothing Day
Most people buy a lot of gifts just before Christmas. But some people think we buy too
much. They have started a special day called Buy Nothing Day. They don’t want anyone to go
shopping that day.
Buy Nothing Day is November 29. It’s 25 days before Christmas. It’s after Thanksgiving
and often the first day of Christmas shopping. At this time, we see ads in newspapers and on
TV telling us to “buy, buy, buy!”
The idea for Buy Nothing Day started in Vancouver, British Columbia. Now people all
over the world celebrate Buy Nothing Day. In California, parents and children get together to
read stories, sing songs, and paint pictures. The children talk about why they don’t need a lot of
toys. This year, in Manchester, England, people dressed up to tell people that we buy too much.
In Albuquerque, New Mexico, high school students wanted to tell other students about
Buy Nothing Day. They organized a spaghetti dinner to give people information about Buy
Nothing Day. They asked restaurants in the neighborhood to donate the food. They made
posters and talked to other students about it. The dinner was a big success, and many students
agreed not to buy anything on November 29. The students at high school liked the idea of this
new tradition. Next year, they want to have another dinner to tell more people about Buy
Nothing Day!
56. Why do people all over the world celebrate Buy Nothing Day?
A. people need more time to do other things.

D. people waste too much time going shopping.
57. How do people celebrate Buy Nothing Day?

C. In England, people celebrated by performing plays.
D. In Mexico, high school students dressed up.
58. What did the students do in New Mexico for the day?
A. They talked to others about Buy Nothing Day.
B. They dressed up to tell people that we buy too much.
C. They organized a spaghetti dinner to donate the food.

D
Babies’ Preference
Baby girls make their way directly for dolls as soon as they can crawl(爬行), while boys
will head for cars, a study has shown. The findings, the first to show differences in very young
babies, suggest there is a biological basis to their preferences.
Psychologists Dr. Brenda Todd from City University London carried out an experiment
involving 90 babies aged 9 months to 36 months. The babies were allowed to choose from
seven toys. Some were typically boys’ toys: a car, a digger, a ball and a blue teddy. The rest
were girls’ toys: a pink teddy, a doll and a cooking set. They were placed a meter away from
the toys; and could pick whichever toy they liked; their choice and the amount of time they
spent playing with each toy were recorded.
Of the youngest children (9 to 14 months), girls spent significantly longer playing with
the doll than boys, and boys spent much more time with the car and ball than the girls did.
Among the two and three-year-olds, girls spent 50 percent of the time playing with the doll
while only two boys briefly touched it. The boys spent almost 90 percent of their time playing
with cars, which the girls barely touched. There was no link between the parents’ view on
which toys were more appropriate for boys or girls and the children’s choice.
Dr. Brenda Todd said, “Children of this age are already exposed to much socialization.
Boys may be given ‘toys that go’ while girls get toys they can care for, which may help shape
their preference. But these findings agree with the former idea that children show natural
interests in particular kinds of toys. There could be a biological basis for their choices. Males
through evolution(进化) have been adapted to prefer moving objects, probably through hunting
instincts(本能), while girls prefer warmer colors such as pink, the color of a newborn baby.”
59. Baby boys and girls have different toy preferences probably because____________.
A. baby boys are much more active
B. baby girls like bright colors more
C. their parents treat them differently
D. there is a natural difference between them
60. What can we infer from Paragraph 3 ?
A. Nine-month-old baby boys don’t play with dolls at all.
B. Two-year-old baby girls sometimes play with cars and balls.
C. Parents should teach their babies to share each other’s toys.
D. The older the babies are, the more obvious their preference is.
61. What conclusion did Dr. Brenda Todd draw from the study?
A. Adults purposely influence their babies’ preference.
B. Babies’ preference is less affected by social surroundings.
C. Baby girls preferring warmer colors will be warm-hearted.
D. Baby boys preferring to moving toys will be good at hunting.
62. We may read this article in a _________ section of a newspaper.
A. health B. culture C. science D. entertainment

♦ Just do it
Those small thing are easier to deal with. Complete them and cross them off the list.
♦ Make things enjoyable
Have small breaks, enjoy music, or even a snack when you are tired. Life is short. Enjoy
your work.
♦ Pack times
Which part of your time is most productive? When this time comes around, close your
door so that it is just you and your work.
♦ Re-list
Sometimes you will not complete everything on your list. This is okay. Add them to
tomorrow’s list with a star so that you will know they should be done first the next day.

Dear Wang Ming,
How time flies! It’s more than half a year since we entered high school. Now I’d like to tell
you something about my school and my study.
Our school is a wonderful one, with beautiful buildings and a big playground. The
teachers here are very helpful and patient to students. The most important thing is that they
have ways to make their lessons interesting and attractive. I like them and I enjoy their
teaching styles. Much to my pleasure, my classmates are friendly and always get ready to help
each other. I have made many new friends here. We share many interests and ideas, and we
can express our thoughts and feelings after classes, which help me a lot, especially when we
are confused about some difficulties in study. My favorite subject is English, and I always try
my best to practice my spoken English as much as possible.
