Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts
between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness
is not serious. In fact,it is quite normal. For some people,
though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there
are three different types of loneliness.
The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most
common type.It usually disappears quickly and does not require
any special attention. The second kind is situation , for
example,family problem,the death of a loved one,or moving
to a new place.Although this kind of loneliness can cause
physical problems , such as headaches and sleeplessness,
it_usually does not last for more than a year.
The third kind of loneliness is the most serious.Unlike the
second type,chronic(the opposite of “temporary”)usually
lasts more than two years and has no specific cause.People who
experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and
becoming close to others.Unfortunately , many chronically
lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to
improve their condition.
Psychologists(心理学家)agree that one important factor in
loneliness is a person's social contacts,for example,friends,
family members, coworkers, etc. We depend on various people for
different reasons. For instance, our families give us emotional
support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our
friends share similar interests and activities. However ,
psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have
many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have
more.They question their popularity.
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually
lonely people for two reasons:they are unhappy and unable to
socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness
and serious illness such as heart disease, while temporary and
situational loneliness can be a sad,and sometimes dangerous
condition.
50.How would you treat temporary loneliness according to
the passage?
A.Talk to friends.
B.Just ignore it.
C.Go to see a doctor.
D.Ask your teachers for guidance.
51.“It” in the last sentence of the second paragraph
refers to ______.
A.temporary loneliness
B.situational loneliness
C.a new place
D.sleeplessness
52.Why do psychologists want to help chronically lonely
people?
A.Chronic loneliness can cause family problems.
B.Chronic loneliness can cause serious illness.
C.Chronic loneliness can not be overcome.
D.Chronic loneliness is incurable.
53.Loneliness is divided according to______.
A.the time it lasts
B.the places where it appears
C.different people it happens to
D.different seasons when it appears

lessons to get money for the cost of schooling.
In 1849, after graduation from medical school. she decided
to further her education in Paris. She wanted to be a surgeon(外
科医师) , but a serious eye problem forced her to give up the
idea.
Upon returning to the United States, she found it difficult
to start her own practice because she was a woman. By 1857

If there is one thing I’m sure about,it is that a hundred
years later we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that
newspapers are a necessity.Even now some people get most of
their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on
Saturdays or Sundays. But for most people, reading a newspaper
has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.
The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes
news is what affects our lives—the big political stories,
the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters,
will continue much the same.I think there will be more coverage
of scientific research, though, the research happening in areas
that may directly affect our lives , like genetic( 基 因 )
engineering. In the future,I think there will be more coverage
of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we
develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and
what our feelings really are.
It’s quite possible that in the next century, newspapers
will be transmitted electronically from the Fleet Street and
printed out in our own home.In fact,I’m pretty sure how it
will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose
from a menu and make up your own newspaper by picking out the
things you want to read—say, sports, international news, ect.
I think people have got it wrong when they talk about
competition between the different media. They actually feed_off
each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill
off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the
printed page lasts longer than pictures flashed up on a screen
or sounds lost in the air.And as for the Internet,it’s never
really pleasant to read something just on a screen.
58.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Best Way to Get News
B.The Changes of Media
C.Make Your Own Newspaper
D.The Future of Newspaper
59.In the writer’s opinion,in the future________.
A.more big political affairs, wars and disasters will make
news
B.newspapers will not be printed in publishing houses any
longer
C.newspapers will cover more scientific research
D.more and more people will read newspapers
60.What will probably be on in the newspaper made by
yourself?
A.Sports and international news.
B.A menu of important news.
C.The most important news.
D.What you are interested in.

F.Write down why you want to quit
It’s never too late to quit smoking and there are many

some tips to help you kick the habit:
61.__________________________
Once you give up smoking, there will be a lot of benefits.
You will feel better, you will live longer, your family won’t
suffer any more, you can save money, you will smell
better, etc. You know what’s bad about smoking and you know what
you will get by quitting. Put it on paper and read it every day.
62.__________________________
It is commonly believed that it is much easier to reduce
the amount day by day than to stop it all at once. Ways to cut
down the amount step by step include: how many cigarettes you
wil smoke every day until your quit date, making the number you
smoke smaller each day;buy only one pack at a time; change your
brands so you don’t enjoy smoking as much; give your cirgrettes
to someone else, so that you have to ask for them each time you
want to.
63.__________________________
Think of the situations in which you are likely to be
tempted to smoke, such as parties, drinking or going out for
coffee. Try to avoid these situations in the early stages of
your quitting program or try sitting in the non-smoking section
at restaurants. Knowing ahead what to do with these situations
can help you avoid being tempted to smoke.
64.___________________________
Ask your friends to support your decision to quit. Find
another smoker who is trying to quit, and help each other with
positive words. Find someone who have succeeded in quitting
smoking and take him as an example. This will certainly add to
your determination.
65.____________________________
Set up a plan for your rewards. Definitely reward yourself
after the first day, and the second, and the third. Make them
good rewards that you will look forward to:CDs,T-shirts, shoes,
a dinner out at your favourite restaurant, a hotel stay,
whatever you can afford.

书面表达
One possible version:
Western holidays such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day are getting more and
more popular in China. Some Chinese people even get crazy on them. But
at the same time, people seem to have less enthusiasm for our traditional
festivals such as the Spring Festival and the Mooncake Festival. However,
most people celebrate western holidays without knowing the meaning behind
them. They just go shopping, hold parties and have fun.
In my opinion, the celebration of western holiday is a good way of
learning the western cultures, which helps to promote understanding and
communication between Chinese cultures and other cultures. Besides, the
celebration can also make our life more interesting. However, we should
make great efforts to preserve and enrich our own traditional culture.
