To what degree can a computer achieve intelligence? The answer to this question may lie in a
newly-developed US computer program called Smarter Child and the Internet.
If you ran into Smarter Child online, you would be surprised at this kid’s huge memory. It can
recite many facts. For example, Smarter Child knows every baseball player in every team this
season.
He knows every word in the dictionary and the weather in every major city area across the US.
However, if you ask Smarter Child other questions, you get strange answers. A question about
Smarter Child’s age returns. “One year, 11 days, 16 hours, 7 minutes, and 47 seconds!” Asking
where he lives gets, “In a clean room in a high-tech building in California.”
Smarter Child uses the vast information on the World Wide Web as his memory bank. To
answer questions about spelling, for instance, Smarter Child goes to American Heritage Dictionary
online. For the weather, he visits www. intellicast. com.
Some scientists believe that by joining the many systems of the Internet, an artificial being
with the combined knowledge of, say, Albert Einstein, Richard Nixon and Britney Spears could be
born. However, if Smarter Child wants to think and learn on his own like the boy-computer David
in the movie A. I. (Artificial Intelligence), he must overcome two problems.
The first is that computers find it difficult to read web pages because the files are labeled(分
类) in different ways. That’s why programmers need to tell Smarter Child where to look for the
weather. It would be a much more difficult task to let him find it himself.
The other problem is that while Smarter Child can process information more exactly and
faster than any human, he lacks common sense—a basic grounding of knowledge that is obvious
to any young child.
65. From the text we can know that www.intellicast.com is a website _______.
A. which is specially designed to help Smarter Child
B. where we people can find Smarter Child
C. where weather forecasts are made
D. which is about artificial intelligence
66. It is probably most difficult for Smarter Child to _______.
A. tell us how to spell a difficult word
B. tell us how the American government is run
C. provide us with a famous poem by Shakespeare
D. learn the ability to tell right behaviors from wrong ones
67. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. Smart Child has his own memory bank big enough for all kinds of information.
B. A.I.( Artificial Intelligence) is probably the name of a film about a boy-computer.
C. Smart Child can recognize different files and find information needed on his own.
D. We have a similar product now which has the knowledge of Einstein, Nixon and Spears.
68. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Smarter Child B. A New Web Child
C. The Future of Internet D. Intelligence Development

Certain people make you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour with
them and feel as if you’ve known them half your life. These people have something in common.
And once we know what it is, we can try to do it ourselves. How is it done? Here are several skills
that good talkers have. If you follow the skills, they’ll help you put people at ease(自在), and
make friends with them quickly. First of all, good talkers ask questions. Almost anyone, no matter
how shy he is, will answer questions. One well known business woman says, “At business lunches,
I always ask people what they did that morning.” From there you can move on to other
matters—sometimes to really personal questions. And how he answers will let you know how far
you can go.
Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen for the answers. The point seems
clear, but it isn’t. Your questions should have a point and help to tell what sort of person you are
talking to. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively. Real listening at least
means some things. First it means not to change the subject of conversation. If someone sticks to
one point, you can take it as a fact that he’s really interested in it. Real listening also means not
just listening to words, but to tones(语调)of voice. If the voice sounds dull, then it’s time for you
to change the subject.
Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the occasion(场合)of parting. If you’re
saying good bye, you may give him a firm handshake and say, “I really enjoy meeting you.” If you
want to see that person again, don’t keep it a secret. Let people know what you feel and they may
walk away feeling as if they’ve known you half their life.”
73. People will like to communicate with those_______.
A. who are skillful at talking with others B. who are very strong and powerful
C. who are helpful to his friends D. who are never against your ideas
74. Asking questions might be a quite good way _______.
A. to make more and more friends B. to put an end to a talk politely
C. to show others you are friendly D. to get a conversation going on
75. After you ask somebody a question, you should _______.
A. make it clear what kind of person he is B. listen to his reply attentively
C. wait quietly for his answer D. go on asking him more questions
76. According to the writer, good talkers are persons _______.
A. who are good at making any topic interesting B. who never talk too much or too little
C. who always talk in a gentle and happy way D. who know how to change the topic

Once there was an 11-year-old boy who went fishing with his father in the middle of a New
Hampshire lake. On the day before bass(巴斯鱼) season opened, they were fishing early in the
evening, catching other fish with worms. Then the boy tied on a small silver lure(鱼饵) and put it
into the lake. Suddenly he felt that something very big pulling on the lure. His father watched with
admiration as the boy skillfully brought the fish beside the bank. Finally he lifted the tired fish
from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.
The boy and his father looked at the big fish. The father lit a match and looked at his watch.
It was 10 p.m.—two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy.
“You’ll have to put it back, son,” he said.
“Dad!” cried the boy. “There will be other fish,” said his father. “Not as big as this one,”
cried the boy. He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were in sight in the
moonlight. He looked again at his father.
Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he had caught the
fish, the boy could tell from his father’s voice that the decision couldn’t be changed. He threw the
huge bass into the black water. The big fish disappeared. The boy thought that he would never
again see such a big fish.
That was 34 years ago. Today the boy is a successful architect in New York City. He often
takes his own son and daughters to fish at the same place.

听下面一段独白,回答第 17~20 三个小题。
The land was dry. The Indians looked at the sky. There were no clouds. “We must have rain,”
the Indians said. So they danced a rain dance. They thought this would bring rain. They danced
with snakes. Then they let the snakes go. “Go back into the ground.” They said to the snakes, “Tell
the god to make the rain come.”
Can men make rain fall? Sometimes. But a rain dance will not bring rain. Today, to make rain,
a man goes up in his airplane. He takes some dry ice with him. He spreads the dry ice on the
clouds. This is called seeding the clouds. Drops of water in the clouds become ice. The ice melts
and makes big rain drops.
Seeding clouds does not always make the rain fall. Rain falls only if the clouds are big and full
of water.
