It is sometimes said that strange flying objects have been seen high up in the sky. People call these
strange objects Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOS). These UFOs caused a lot of interest. Some of
the reports about them are difficult to believe. Some have been explained in scientific ways.
Others have never been explained. Here is an account of UFOs from a report.
Dennis Burdens, who wrote an article, tells us that he once saw a UFO himself. He was having
dinner one night with a friend near Tripoli, Libya, and after dinner the two men walked across a
yard to his room to look at some papers. Burdens noticed that the moon looked strange that night.
“It wasn't the moon”, was the reply.
They watched the light and saw that it was moving. It seemed to be an object rather like a big
plate. In some ways it looked like smoke with a light on it, but it wasn't smoke because it didn't
change its shape. It was moving in a regular way. That is to say, it didn't go suddenly faster or
more slowly, and it didn't go higher or lower. So the two men decided that there must be men in it.
After that, Burdens said that he felt eyes looking at him. He was being watched in the darkness.
When it was nearer, they noticed that the bottom parts were brighter than the top. The bottom was
yellow and the top red. Then the object suddenly turned away and left Libya, moving very fast.
On a later day Burdens talked to other people about it, and he found some who had seen it. They
all described it in the same way. Could they all be mistaken?
36. UFOs are _____.
A .flying high up in the sky B. strange flying objects C. difficult to believe D. very interested
37. The UFO moved _____.
A. regularly B. in a changeable way . C. slowly D. fast

39. The UFO was seen _____.
A. by Burdens and his friend B. brighter in the darkness

We often hear people say, “I have a good memory for things like that” or “I can remember names”.
But do you know memory is the single most important thing and it has played a very important
part?
For early men, there were dangerous all around them----bad weather, wild animals. The keys to
keep on living lay in man's ability to remember these dangers and the ways he had dealt with them
in the past. In order for memories to be stored, the human brain became more complex. And as
man learned how to deal with them, he became civilized ( 文 明 ).Surprisingly, scientists today
understand little about memory and how it works. They have not yet found a way to open up the
brain and observe its function without destroying it. Perhaps there are two types of memory:
short-term and long-term. Short-term refers to those facts that stay with us for a few seconds to a
few hours. For instance, when you stay at a hotel, you remember the room number and forget as
soon as you leave. Long-term memory, on the other hand, means you remember things for a long
period of time. If you spend your honeymoon in a particular hotel, it's likely that you'll remember
your stay quite clearly.
Scientists also believe that a short-term memory can become a long-term memory through
consolidation(巩固). A lot of chemical and physical changes take place in the part of the brain.
Although the human brain weighs three pounds, it contains 30 billion nerve cells( 神 经 细 胞 )
acting like a computer. When those changes strengthen the links(联系) in certain nerve cells, a
though becomes a part of the long-term memory.
40. According to the author, without the development of man's memory there would be _____.
A. no modern world B. no recorded history C. no animals D. no dangers
41. Scientists' knowledge about the function of brain is _____.
A. interesting B. not enough C. great D. encouraging
42. Short-term memory can change into long-term memory on condition that _____.
A. memory is good B. it acts like a computer
C. people do more exercise D. the links in nerve cells are strengthened by certain changes
43. So far the great discovery scientists have made about the function of brain is _____.
A. the weight of brain B. two types of memory
C. 30 billion nerve cells D. chemical and physical changes

I'm writing this letter slowly because I know you can't read fast. We don't live where we did when
you left home. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accident happened within 20 miles from
your home, so we moved.
I won't be able to send you the address because the last family that lived here took the house
numbers when they moved so that they wouldn't have to change their address. This place is really
nice. It even has a washing machine I'm not sure it works so well though: last week I put a load in
and pulled the chain and haven't seen them since. The weather isn't bad here. It only rained twice
last week; the first time for three days and the second time for four days. About that coat you
wanted me to send you, your uncle Stanley said it would be too heavy to send in the mail with the
buttons on so we cut them off and put them in the pockets.
John locked his keys in the car yesterday. We were really worried because it took him two hours to
get me and your father out. Your sister had a baby this morning, but I haven't found out what sex it
is yet. The baby looks just like your brother.
Uncle Ted fell in a whiskey vat last week. Some men tried to pull him out, but he fought them off
playfully and drowned. We had him cremated and he burned for three days.
Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pick-up trunk. Ralph was driving. He rolled down the
window and swam to safety. You other two friends were in back. They drowned because they
couldn't get the tail gate down.
There isn't much more news at this time. Nothing much has happened.
Love, Mom
P.S. I was going to send you some money but the envelope was already sealed.

When we hear the words “ college students”, we usually think of a young person between 18 and
22 years old. But in the U.S.A today, a college student often is much older. In fact, educators say
in the next few years colleges and universities may have more older part-time students than
traditional (传统的) full-time younger students.
Educators report a big increase in the number of Americans who attend college and university
classes in the evening or at night or weekends. Most of them are older than 25 years old and more
have full-time or part-time jobs. Many are in their thirties or forties.
Why are so many people deciding to spend their time and money in order to continue their
education? Most are doing it because they believe more education will help them to get a better
job. Some are industrial workers whose factories have closed. They are learning new skills to
prepare for other kinds of work. Some of the part-time students are not pleased with the jobs they
have. They are studying for new ones. Some have retired (退休) and are looking for new kinds of
work. Two of every three of the students older than 35 are women. Many of them are returning to
school after years of staying at home to care for children.
Are older students good students? Most teachers say yes. They say older students really want to
learn. They ask difficult questions and are not pleased with simple answers. They often get high
grades.
48. It's said that in the next few years _________________.
A. students in colleges and universities will be much older
B. full-time students in colleges and universities will be even younger

49. Judge which of the following is FALSE according to the above passage.
A. It's reported that a large number of Americans attend college or universities classes in their
spare time.
B. Most of them are over 25.
C. Most of them are without jobs.
D. The number of students in colleges and universities is reported to have gone up greatly.
50. Why are so many people deciding to go on with their education? Because___________.
A. Most of the Americans enjoy learning something new

C. They have lost their jobs
D. They are tired of their jobs they have
51. "They often get high grades" means ____________.
A. they rise to high grades easily
B. they often get very good marks (分数)
C. they are more likely to receive a master's or a doctor's degree upon graduation

Charles Chaplin, who died in 1977, is considered one of the greatest and funniest actors in the
history of the cinema. During his lifetime, he acted in 13 films, and he wrote, directed and acted in
69 other films.
Chaplin was born in London in 1889.When a poor boy, he was often seen waiting outside the
London theatres, hoping to get work in show business. He could sing and dance, and above all, he
knew how to make people laugh. But he couldn't get work and therefore wandered about the city
streets. Sometimes he was sent away to a home for children who had not parents.
Charlie Chaplin first acted when he was five. He broke into show business because his mother, a
music-hall performer, lost her voice during the performance and had to leave the stage, and
Charlie went on and sang a well-known song. Halfway through the song a shower of money
poured onto the stage. Charlie stopped singing and told audiences he would pick the money first
and then finish the song. The audiences laughed. This was the first of millions of laughs in Charlie
Chaplin's fabulous career(神话般的生涯).
Twenty years later the same Chaplin became the greatest and best loved comedian in the world.
His dream came true in the end. Chaplin became world-famous and almost a king in the world of
the film.
Even people who don't understand English can enjoy Chaplin's films because they are mostly
silent. The equipment for adding sound to films had not yet been developed. The development of
films with sound became a problem for Chaplin, as he was uncertain about making films with
dialogues. Instead, he continued to make films without dialogue, but he added music, which he
wrote himself. It isn't what he says that makes us laugh. His comedy doesn't depend on words. It
depends on little actions which mean the same thing to people the world over.
Chaplin's later films, however, were not well received. Chaplin lived most of his life in America
and the last years in Switzerland, where he was buried at Christmas 1977, at the age of
eighty-eight. There was sadness all over the world at the news of his death.
In his book, Chaplin tells us how to succeed in life. He says, “You have to believe in yourself.
That's the secret.”
52. Chaplin is regarded as king of comedy mainly because _______.
A. he acted out the common human situations best in his comedy
B. he could sing and dance well
C. he knew how to make people laugh
D. lots of people have seen his films
53. What makes people laugh in Chaplin's films?
A. It isn't his words but his actions B. Neither his words nor actions
C. Either his words or his actions D. Not only his words but also his actions
54. The only secret of Charles Chaplin's huge success is that _______.
A. he can make all people, men and women, old and young laugh
B. he has full trust in himself
C. he is always active and hard-working all his life
D. though he is always in trouble, he never loses heart
55. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. He was too shy to meet the managers of the theatres.
B. People won't stop laughing until tears run down Chaplin's face.
C. People all over the world can enjoy Chaplin's films without translation because most of them
are silent.
D. He wouldn't like to work at the theatre.

David Beckham, one of the world’s most famous athletes, was at a press conference. He held his
new Los Angeles jersey (球衣) in his hand and was surrounded by reporters. Beckham said he was
excited to be in LA and couldn’t wait to play football. Then he stopped, laughed and said, “I mean
soccer”.
Beckham, the English native, is truly an international man. So he remembered that while the
games are the same, some of the sports words are different in the US than in the UK. These
differences are what make the English language so colorful. They also make it a bit confusing.
Now, Beckham can’t forget that while in England he plays football on a pitch, in the US he plays
soccer on a field.
After the game is over, Beckham might want to change out of his uniform and into regular
clothes. In America he’ll be wearing sneakers and perhaps a light sweater. But if he were back
home in England he’d be wearing trainers and a jumper. Beckham might also want to use
hairspray to style his hair. But if he forgets he is in the US and asks for “lacquer”, which is what
the British call hairspray, his teammates might think he’s strange. In the US, “lacquer” is
something you use to treat wood.
