China may be the world’s largest market for e-bikes, but Europe is fast catching up.
The EU’s official statistics agency says the figure reached the one million e-bike mark
two years ago, and sales have sharply increased since then.
When working errands (差事) around Berlin, Lutz, who usually works with horses, uses
the company’s new e-bike that charges easily and has a range of 140 kilometers. “We found
there was no parking spot problem or other worries. And on top of all this, we don’t pollute
the environment. Petrol is also saved,” said Lutz Baddack, owner of Reitsport Baddack.
Unlike many other parts of the world, the EU does not require registration (登记) for
e-bikes. Nearly half a million are expected to be sold in Germany this year, in all shapes
and sizes.
It’s not just bike fans buying them. People who usually drive cars also use them
occasionally,” said Stefan Gelbhaar.
Dealers say the elderly are also big customers. Sales of ordinary bicycles fell in
Germany last year, but sales of e-bikes rose by eight percent. Sales figures are expected
to keep rising. “In five years we will have the market share of 20 percent, maybe more,”
said Marcus Kendler, owner of E-Motion. In the hillier parts, that figure has already been
beyond it.
The sales of e-bikes in Germany have been much larger than those in any other country
in Europe. But other countries are fast catching up. In Europe, with the various brands
at the market and falling prices, e-bikes are here to stay and not just a repeated trend.
56.In Germany the sales of e-bikes _________.
A. have been the biggest in Europe
B. have been larger than in China
C. reached one million two years ago
D. have taken up 20% of the market
57. Which of the following is NOT the benefit of using e-bikes?
A. The users needn’t worry about parking spots.
B. It’s environmentally friendly and saves petrol.
C. The users are not required to register worldwide.
D. It charges easily and runs far without charging.
58. From the passage we know that e-bikes are preferred by those _________.
A. who work with horses
B. who usually drive cars
C. who are out on business
D. who live in the hillier parts
59. It can be inferred from the passage that _________.
A. the popularity of e-bikes in Europe will be lasting
B. in Europe there are various brands of e-bikes on sale
C. e-bikes will replace ordinary bicycles in only five years
D. Europe will become the world’s largest market of e-bikes

July 21st. 2007 was a typical English summer’s day—it rained for 24 hours! As usual,
I rushed home from work at midday to check on the house. Nothing was amiss. By the time
I left work at 5p.m., however, the road into our village was flooded. Our house had never
been flooded but, as I opened the front door, a wave of waters greeted me. Thank God! The
kids weren’t with me, because the house was 5 feet deep in water. We lost everything
downstairs. And the plaster had to be torn off the wall’s ceilings pulled down.
At first we tried to push on through. We didn’t want to move the children out of home.
So we camped upstairs. We put a sheet of plastic across the floor to protect us from the
damp. But after three months, we felt very sick, so we move to a wooden house in a park.
The house was small, but at first we were all just delighted to be in a new place.
Unfortunately, things took longer than expected and we were there for 10 months. The life
there was inconvenient. What surprised me most was how much I missed being part of a community
(社区). We had lived in a friendly village with good neighbors, and I’d never thought
how much I’d miss that.
Although our situation was very bad, it’s difficult to feel too sorry for yourself
when you look at what’s happening elsewhere. I watched a news report about floods in
Northern India and thought. “We didn’t have a straw hut(茅草房)that was for Christmas.
But I can’t wait—I’m going to throw a party for our friends in the village to say thanks
for their support. This year, I won’t need any gifts—living away from home for months
has made me realize how little we actually need or miss all our possessions. Although we
are replacing things, there’s really no rush—we have our home back. And that’s the main
thing.
60. What does the underlined word “amiss” in the first paragraph mean?
A. Found. B. Missing. C. Right. D. Wrong.
61. It can be inferred from the text that the author _________.
A. cared much about her children
B. was sick of staying upstairs alone
C. could not stand living in a wooden house
D. did not deal well with her family affairs during the flood
62. Why does the author say that they were lucky in the third paragraph?
A. Because her situation was not serious.
B. Because some others suffered even more.
C. Because she had ever been to Northern India.
D. Because very few other places were also flooded.
63. What does the author mainly want to express by telling her story?
A. She realized she needed no more possession.
B. She valued human feelings more than before.
C. She found Christmas gifts no longer badly needed.
D. She thought her own home was the most important of all.

My Left Foot (1989)
Imagine being a prisoner of your own body, unable to make any
movements except to move your left foot. The main character in
My Left Foot, based on the real story of cerebral palsy (大脑
性麻痹) sufferer Christy Brown, can barely move his mouth to
speak, but by controlling his left foot, he’s able to express
himself as an artist and poet. For his moving performance of
Brown, Daniel Lewis won his first Academy Award for best
actor.
Shine (1996)
Do you have a talent you’re afraid to share with the world?
David Helfgott seemed meant from childhood to be “one of the
truly great pianists,” but the pressures of performing (and
pleasing his father) resulted in a complete breakdown. Ten years
in a mental institution didn’t weaken Helfgott’s musical gift:
When he was rediscovered, he was playing concertos in a
bar. Shine received seven Oscar nominations ( 提 名 ), and
Geoffrey Rush won best actor for his performance of Helfgott.
Life Is Beautiful (1997)
Nothing’s more powerful than the love between a parent and
a child. In this heartbreaking Italian film, a father (Roberto
Benigni) makes an unbelievable sacrifice for his 4-year-old son:
trapped in a Nazi concentration camp in 1945, the Jewish man
convinces his boy that they are playing a complicated game. He
manages to spare him the horror of the terrible war, and even in
his final moments of life, keeps his son smiling and hopeful.
Benigni won the best actor Oscar.
Stand and Deliver (1988)
Few people can inspire us more than a good teacher. Jaime
Escalante (Edward James Olmos got Oscar nomination for best
actor) is a great one. Employed at a high school where kids are
expected to fail, Escalante challenges his math students to
struggle for better things, like getting good grades in the AP
exam. Despite the obstacles in their lives, the classmates
accomplish their goals, thanks to Mr. Escalante’s support. The
real Jaime Escalanteis, the Best Teacher in America, says
that Stand and Deliver is “90% truth, 10% drama.”

Holidaymakers who are bored with baking beaches and overheated hotel rooms head for
a big igloo. Swedish businessman Nile Bergqvist is delighted with his new hotel, the world’s
first igloo hotel. Built in a small town in Lapland, it has been attracting lots of visitors,
but soon the fun will be over.
In two weeks’ time Bergqvist’s ice creation(作品)will be nothing more than a pool
of water. “We don’t see it as a big problem,” he says. “We just look forward to replacing
it.”"
Bergqvist built his first igloo in 1991 for an art exhibition. It was so successful
that he designed the present one, which measures roughly 200 square meters. Six workmen
spent more than eight weeks piling 1,000 tons of snow onto a wooden base; when the snow
froze, the base was removed. “The only wooden thing we have left in the igloo is the front
door,” he says.
After their stay, all visitors receive a survival certificate recording their success.
With no windows, nowhere to hang clothes and temperatures below 0℃, it may seem more like
a survival test than a relaxing hotel break. “It’s great fun,” Bergqvist explains, “as
well as a good start in survival training.”
The popularity of the igloo is beyond doubt: it is now attracting tourists from all
over the world. At least 800 people have stayed at the igloo this season even though there
are only 10 rooms. “You can get a lot of people in,” explains Bergqvist. “The beds are
three meters wide by two meters long, and can fit at least four at one time.”
68. Bergqvist designed and built the world’s first igloo hotel because _________.

69. When the writer says “the fun will be over,” he refers to the fact that _________.
A. hotel guests will be frightened at the thought of the hard test
B. holidaymakers will soon get tired of the big igloo
C. Bergqvist’s hotel will soon become a pool of water
D. a bigger igloo will replace the present one
70. When guests leave the igloo hotel they will receive a paper stating that _________.
A. they have visited Lapland B. they have had great fun sleeping on ice
C. they have had a taste of adventure D. they have had an ice-snow holiday
71. Which of the four pictures below is the closest to the igloo hotel as described in the
text?

For one tired out from work, autumn is one of the best times to step into the open air
to kick back and enjoy some great music. And that’s what many Beijingers have done this
past weekend.
Family, friends, laughter; beautiful grass, fresh air and live music echoing (回响)
off the forest and the Great Wall that surround this place. A weekend in this music paradise
(乐园) just seems too short. Besides, a brand new world-class outdoor theater has just
been open at this year’s festival, which will surely make the festival a better and more
permanent experience.
A full house is before the new outdoor amphitheater (圆形剧场). Even the thunderstorm
couldn’t break up the crowd completely absorbed in the music. Thanks to the new theater,
this year’s Great Wall Forest Festival offers even more superb acoustics(音效的) and
an overall outdoor theatrical experience, even though the project is still half complete.
The festival is now in its fourth year. Since its first show in 2010, the festival has
seen a steady increase in festival-goers and has expanded its length from two days to four
days, divided over two weekends. It has also been experimenting with a variety of styles,
from classical to pop, with this year’s theme “Celebrating 20 Years of Chinese Folk Song.”
Folk Song legend Lao Lang explains how folk songs have helped encourage more amateur folks
to express themselves through music.
“Before music was reserved for the professionals. But folk songs made young people
realize that they can express themselves through music as well. And that’s what
characterizes folk songs. It’s popular music and it always has a story.” said Lao Lang.
Unlike some of the other outdoor festivals, the Great Wall Forest Festival appeals to
a wide range of audiences. It’s a rare place where teens, parents and families can all
enjoy the outdoors and have a great time.
Great music and scenery aside, many children’s workshops, master music classes, and
interactive art activities have also been introduced this year. If music is the reason to
come to the festivals, you’ll find even more reasons not to leave.
72. What is the meaning of the underlined phrase “kick back” in Paragraph 1?
A. to hit with legs. B. to work harder
C. to relax oneself D. to make people leave
73. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. The place where the Festival is held is near the Great Wall.
B. The completed project adds to the attraction of this year’s Festival.
C. The audience attending the festival bury themselves in the music.
D. The year 2010 saw the beginning of the Great Wall Forest Festival.
74. The 2014 Great Wall Forest Festival has got improved in the following aspects except
that _________.
A. it has included different types of music
B. it has attracted a wide range of audiences
C. it has introduced more activities besides music
D. its has been expanded from 2 days to 4 days in a week
75. According to Lao Lang, we can know that _________.
A. folk songs can help amateur singers become famous easily
B. folk songs are the ones just intended for the professionals
C. a folk song, always with a story, belongs to popular music
D. popular songs are used by the young to express themselves

It’s necessary to use different ways to communicate for different purposes. Study,
made by Jeff Hancock of Cornell University in New York, has found that people are twice
as likely to tell lies in phone conversations as they are in e-mails.
Hancock made an investigation by asking 30 students to keep a communication diary for
a week. In it they noted the number of conversations or e-mail exchanges they had lasting
more than 10 minutes, and how many lies they told. Hancock then worked out the number of
lies per conversation for each medium. He found that lies made up 14% of e-mails, 21% of
instant messages, 27% of face-to-face interactions and an astonishing 37% of phone calls.
His results, to be presented at the conferences on human computer interaction in Vienna,
Austria, in April, have surprised psychologists.
Hancock says it is very important and effective whether a conversation is being recorded
and could be reread, and whether it occurs in real time. People appear to be afraid to lie
when they know that they will be responsible for what they have said in the conversation.
This is why fewer lies appear in e-mail than on the phone.
People are even more likely to lie in real time—in an instant message or phone call.
Many lies are sudden or immediate responses to demands that they don’t expect.”
Hancock hopes his research will help many a company work out the best ways for their
employees to communicate. For instance, the phone might be the best medium for selling their
products where employees are encouraged to stretch the truth. But given his results, work
assessment, where honesty is regarded as more important than others, might be best done
using e-mail.
Hancock’s study on people 76 in different ways of communications

六、书面表达:
Dear Sir,
I am writing to tell you something about the people doing the square dance in our
community, which has made me terribly upset.
Recently, every morning and evening, many people gather to dance in our community square,
which does help to keep healthy. However, the long-time dancing and the noise pollution
caused by the loudspeaker really bring about unbearable inconveniences.
We can’t rest or sleep well. As a result, the students are not only late for school
but also sleepy in class, and the workers are easily tired out while working.
Here are some suggestions to solve the problem. They are supposed either to shorten
the dancing time and reduce the music noise or to make another choice of dancing places.
Only in this way can they have fun and let others enjoy life.
Would you please communicate with the organizers about what I said?
Best wishes,
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua

M: It was a miracle. There are two men in the truck and a woman with a child in the car,
but no one was badly hurt.

W: Did you watch TV last night?
M: Yes, I did.
W: It was a good game, wasn’t it?
M: Oh, I didn’t watch the football match. I wanted to, but my wife preferred to watch the
old film.
W: What a pity. It was quite exciting. Both teams played very well.
M: How did it finish?
W: It finished in a draw. What was the film like?
M: It was quite good. But I missed the beginning of it because I had to eat first.
W: Did your wife enjoy it?
M: No. After half an hour she stopped watching and started to read a book.

W: United Airlines. Can I help you?
M: Yes, I’d like to book some tickets for the Flight 220, departing for New York on October
7 at 7:30 in the evening.
W: Your name, please.
M: Wang Hua.
W: Do you want to fly first class or economy class?
M: Economy, please.
W: Yes, we still have room on that flight. Will this be one-way trip?
M: No, a round trip back to Beijing—on October 7. By the way, do you have any direct flights
coming back?
W: Yes, we do. Flight 414, leaving from New York at 3:00 p.m., flies non-stop back to Beijing.
M: That’s perfect. What’s the exact air fare?
W: Economy fare for a round trip ticket from New York to Beijing is $467 during the busy
season.
M: That’s fine. Are my tickets confirmed?
W: Yes, your seats are confirmed on those two flights. Please be at the airport at least
one hour before the departure.

W: What’s the trouble, Mike?
M: Well, doctor, it’s my eyes. I can’t see clearly.
W: How long have you had the problem?
M: Since last week, I think.
W: Let me take a look. Oh, Mike, I guess you are working too hard these days and taking
little care of your eyes.
M: That’s true. What should I do then?
W: Well, when you feel tired, just stop working and come out to enjoy a short rest. Remember
never go to bed too late or read in bed.
M: Do you think that will help?
W: Sure, Mike.
M: All right, doctor, I’ll have a try. Thank you very much.

W: David, I’m kind of in the mood for a comedy tonight. Look, here’s a Will Smith movie.
M: What time does it start?
W: Um… It’s on at 6:00 and 9:30. If we leave work right at 5:00, we can make the 6 o’clock
show.
M: Yeah, but I haven’t finished work. I won’t be ready to leave at 5:00. How about we
go at 9:30? It’s late, but at least I can finish my work. And we can eat after the movie.
W: Maybe there’s another movie at 7:00 or 8:00? Let’s see…
M: Oh, I know! Have you seen that new science-fiction movie with Bruce Willis?
W: No, but I have heard about it. I really like science-fiction movies.
M: Do you? Well, see if it’s playing someplace.
W: OK. Oh, look! It’s playing at 6:30 at the Plaza tonight.
M: It is? Perfect. Let’s go.
W: But you have to finish your report…
M: Oh, never mind! I’ll do it tomorrow.

It has been a week since gunmen attacked a shopping center in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.
The attack left more than 70 people dead. The Kenyan Red Cross said Thursday that about
60 others were still missing. The attack left many people feeling powerless and shocked.
But instead of hiding at home, Kenyans have come out to donate food, clothing, their own
blood and money. The country appears more united because of the attack. The violence at
the shopping mall lasted four days. During that time, medical workers offer help to victims
and security forces at a nearby community center. A small army of volunteers came to the
center. They provided food, medical services and emotional support to an endless line of
people. Vimal Shah helped to direct the community center operation. He said so many people
wanted to feed Kenyan security forces or help the victims.
