It is time for students to sell such things as chocolate bars and greeting cards to raise money
for their school, class or club.It is inevitable that they will knock on your door and you will easily
hand over your cash for overpriced items that you really do not want. That is okay, though,
because there are many reasons why children should be allowed to raise money for their schools
and clubs.
Fundraising(募集资金) is a great way to help children learn social skills. It is not easy to go
up to a complete stranger and ask him for his money. They have to nicely ask for help, show the
interested buyer what they have to offer and explain how it will help them in school. If someone
refuses to buy an item, that child has to take the failure in stride(不特别费力地), and that is a
learning lesson as well.
Students can learn how to deal with money by fundraising.Of course, it might seem safer for
us to take charge of our children’s earnings from their fundraising before it is turned into the
school. However, by making them keep track of it, count it, and make sure everyone pays the
right amount, they are learning an important lesson. Dealing with more Fundraising helps
improve their schools. It is the children’s school. They have to learn there and grow there. Why
not let them help in making it a better place?
Fundraising allows for more life experiences for the child. The raised money is used towards
things like parties, trips, or for the music club to go to see a Broadway play. The children receive
the rewards for their hard work at raising the money.Without fundraising, these field trips and
special school memories would be missed.
In a word, fundraising helps children a lot in many ways.

A new hotel is set to open in a faraway village in northern Sweden, which intends to change
the simple treehouse into a world-class hotel for travelers who enjoy special designs.
Treehotel, which lies in Harads about 60 km south of the Arctic Circle, will be made up of four
rooms when it opens on July 17th:the Cabin, the Blue Cone, the Nest and the Mirrorcube.
Two more are due to open in October—the UFO and A Room With a View.
“Our goal in five years is to have 24 rooms from 24 different architects(建筑师),”says
Treehotel co-founder Kent Lindvall, who came up with the idea along with his wife Bfitta.
The first six rooms were designed by five different architects. The Mirrorcube which stands
four meters high and four meters wide has drawn widespread attention as it will be connected to
a singletree.

‘‘It’s an interesting building. You cannot find anything like this in the world today. It’s really
special, ”says Lindvall,as he stands next to the room’s mirrored outer wall.
‘‘Everything will reflect in this—the trees,the birds,the clouds,the sun,everything.So
it should be invisible(看不见的) nearly in the forest.’’
Lindvall says a special film will be put onto the glass which will be seen by birds.
‘‘This is untouched forest and—we want to leave it as it is . "says Selberg, another
co-founder.
She adds.’’If we’re lucky we might see a bear.I think what’s exciting here is that we’re just
60 km below the Arctic Circle which means there’s a good possibility to have the northern lights
in the winter and during the summer of course you have the midnight sun.”

What would you do if you were lost in the dark forest at night? The first sensible lesson is
that you shouldn’t bother trying to find your way in the dark at all, but just stay out until
dawn. Because then you won’t trip over things? No, mainly because you’ll have an idea of
direction. The sun rises in the east. But you will be amazed at how many people forget they know
that.Apparently, the area underneath a holly bush provides a good makeshift shelter—they are
thick, and evergreen. The next thing to do—or rather not to do—is panic, for the obvious reason
that unless there is someone there to hear you scream.it will get you nowhere.Just try to think
of nice, happy things.
There is always a point in films when a person who is lost in the desert or the snow,
dehydrated (脱水的) and exhausted, comes across a set of their own footprints and realizes
they have just walked in a huge, round circle. It is wrong to owe it to the unequal strengths or
different lengths of your legs. Experiments prove that, without the sun or the moon( or
landmarks) as a fixed guide, lots of small errors add up over time so the brain can’t correctly
identify the “straight ahead” direction. To just get out of somewhere, pick a spot on the horizon
and just head for it.
There are several ways to find directions in the dark, and by far the best is to establish north
using the stars. Most people can identify the Plough, which is part of Ursa Major. It looks a lot
like a saucepan. The Plough rotates (旋转) through the sky, but let’s imagine the saucepan
lying horizontally, with its handle on the left. You need to trace a line from the star at the
right-hand base of the pan, through the star at the right-hand rim(边沿), and follow it upwards;
the North Star is roughly five times the distance between those two ‘pointer” stars. Then drop a
vertical line from the North Star to the horizon and that’s north.
“Tonight is very cloudy and I can’t see the Plough.” Maybe luckily, it is quite windy.Keep in
mind that almost all of our weather comes from a south-westernly direction.(This only works if
you are in the British Isles.) To find the direction, you can throw light bits of dried-out grass in
the air and see which way they blow; or, if there are clouds and patches of clear sky, see which
way they blow across the stars. You can also get an idea of direction from leggy plants. If they
look as if they have been blown over, they will probably be pointing north-east.If they are simply
leaning in one direction as they grow, there’s a good chance that it is south ( they will be
reaching towards the sun). The last thing to do is to judge your direction and off you go.
64.What might be the best title of the passage?
A.What to do if you are lost
B.How to protect yourself in the forest
C.How to survive in the forest
D.How to direct your way out of the wild
65.Which of the following pictures matches the description of the position of the North Star?
66.Why will people often walk in a circle if they are lost in the desert or the snow?
A.Because without anything to refer to for directions, the brain will be confused by errors.
B.Because one of the legs is longer and stronger than the other.
C.Because the desert or the snow usually covers a large area for people to get across.
D.Because people usually feel dehydrated and exhausted in the desert or the snow.
67.If you were lost in the Talklimakan Desert in China, ____ would NOT be dependable for you to
identify the directions.
A.the sun B.the North Star C.the moon D.the wind

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our
environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes.To
some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a
genius out of a child born with intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in rich and
varied surrounding. Thus the limits of a person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not be
reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be
supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer
the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if
we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degree of
intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they
will very likely be as intelligent as each other.Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and
children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on
birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We
might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is
boring. We should soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that
environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people
who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar
degree of intelligence.
68.If a child is born with low intelligence, he can ____.
A.never become a genius
B.still become a genius if he should be given an education
C.go beyond his intelligence limits in rich surroundings
D.not reach his intelligence in his life
69 . In the second paragraph “if we take two unrelated people at random from the
population...” means “if we ____.”
A.choose two persons with different intelligence
B.take out two different persons
C.choose two persons who are relative
D.pick any two persons
70.The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately show ____.
A.the role of environment on intelligence
B.the importance of their intelligence
C.the importance of their positions
D.the part that birth place

Another small animal that tigers eat in Ranthambhore (a wildlife park in northern
India)is the porcupine(豪猪).These animals are spread widely across India in open areas
and grasslands; they often live in the earth and between rocks. They are good diggers, and in
Ranthambhore are nocturnal (夜出的) ; they only come out at night. They weigh 12 to 16
kilograms and reach the length of 80 to 90 centimetres. They live usually on vegetables and fruit
and seem to have a good sense of smell. Porcupines defend themselves when attacked by
moving backwards with their quills upright, often making a strange noise.
Several times, I have found the remains of quills where a tiger has killed and eaten a
porcupine, but I have never actually seen the kill.In spite of the quills, experienced tigers will try
to kill clearly by biting the porcupine’s head, its weakest spot. But the quills are very sharp and
can give painful injuries to young tigers. If the quills have gone in very deeply or if they are stuck
in the tiger’s paw, it will try to pull them out.Often, it will be successful, and the wound will get
better. But, if the quills have gone in very deeply or if they are stuck in the tiger’s neck or mouth,
where they cannot be reached, the wound will often turn bad.If this happens, the tiger is in pain
and is less able to hunt animals. It has to look for easier prey and so may turn to cows on the
edges of the forest. From this, it is a small step to becoming a man-eater.
71.A porcupine is a small animal which _____.
A.likes to stay on vegetables and fruit
B.has vegetables and fruit as its main food
C.prefers to stay on vegetables and fruit rather than anywhere else
D.eats nothing but vegetables and fruit
72.The word “quill” here means ____.
A.long, sharp needle-like parts on a porcupine
B.feathers on a porcupine
C.teeth of a porcupine
D.paws of a porcupine
73.According to this passage, what cause a tiger to become a man-eater?
A.When there are no porcupine for a tiger to catch.
B.When it is difficult for a tiger to catch other animals.
C.When a tiger wasn’t hurt seriously.
D.When it turns to cows on the edges of the forest.
74.Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.A porcupine makes a strange noise when there is danger.
B.A porcupine doesn’t come out until night falls.
C.A porcupine is good at digging.
D.Whenever it was attacked, a porcupine runs back home.
75.What is proper title for this passage?
A.A Porcupine B.How Do Tiger Kill Porcupines?
C.What Can Cause a Tiger to Become a Man-eater?

Tracking My Growth
The process of growing up is complex for every person, for there are many influential factors
in a person’s growth as well as the development of his personality. As for me, what has affected
me most in my both growth and personality are family and friends, the two equally important
factors.
After one is born, the first surroundings is the family in which he will grow up.Family plays a
significant role in shaping children’s character because it’s children’s most direct source of
knowledge and experiences. Those who are brought up in good families tend to possess many
pleasant characters and vice versa.
On the other hand, friends in some ways influence him more rapidly than families
do.Friends have many different opinions and personalities.Discussing with them builds up his
personality.Frankly speaking, I get lots of valuable things from my friends.
Family offers me warmth and care.Friends give me strength and horizons. Therefore, both
of them are most influential in my growth
