Space travel used to be a young man’s game, but when John Glenn went into space
aboard Discovery, four generations of men and women could gaze into the sky and think
“That could be me someday.”At the same time Glenn was looking down and doing some
thinking of his own.
“It’s quite something,”he said, “to look down on this blue planet。seeing
that little film of air that surrounds it.You fly over the Mediterranean, over the
Middle East—and it’s so beautiful. You wonder why in the world humans can’t solve
all the problems they’ve created and left to fester over the centuries.”
“I was at the Houston airport on my way back to Washington recently when this
older guy walked up to me,all excited. He shook my hand and said,‘Boy, you’re
changing my life! I said how’s that? He said,‘I’m 74。and ever since 1 was a
kid I’ve wanted to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.I haven’t done it,and I kept putting
it off.And now I’m gonna do it! And all the time his wife is standing behind him,
just shaking her head.”
“So I may have killed a man on Kilimanjaro, for all I know. But I’ve noticed
something.I’ve noticed that maybe because of all this, people are seeing themselves
in a way they haven’t before. They’re realizing that older people have the same

Today, among people everywhere。there is an increasing awareness and worry about
the steady growth in the world’s population.A recent survey conducted by the
United Nations Fund for Population Activities(UNFPA)reported that this growth will
continue until the end of the next century. For developing countries alone, the annual
average population growth is,at present,4.6%compared to 2.0% for developed
countries. At this rate, the world’s population will reach 10.2 billion by the turn
of the 21st century. With the growth in population is the problem of food security…the
guarantee of a steady supply of food. The unstoppable growth in population justifies
the Malthusian Doctrine that population of a region will continue to grow unless
checked, and this is of course alarming since it will inevitably lead to food
shortages of considerable proportions.
Our forests are an abundant source of food and fuel, two items essential in
sustaining life.Above 30%of the world’s land surface is covered by such forests. In
Asia alone。more than two billion people depend heavily on forest products for their
subsistence and survival. To maintain a reasonable balance between population growth
and food supply, this natural source of life—sustaining food and fuel must be
conserved and protected from its worst enemy….mall himself. It is appalling(令
人震惊的)to note that in many developing countries, which are themselves heavily
hit by population-food imbalance, governments approve the cutting down of forests
to meet their immediate needs for saleable timber.and also for agricultural
land.Often the cutting down and burning of forests is conducted with total abandon
owing to the absence of sound forestry techniques and management. At the rate tropical
forests are now being cleared each year, the world’s tropical forests will be
completely destroyed within the next 100 years.
With a view to maintaining food security for the world’s population, the Food
and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations(FAO)has launched a campaign
aimed at ensuring food supply, maximizing stability in the flow of this supply and
ensuring access to it by a11.Forestry, according to the FAO.plays a vital role
in making it possible to fulfill all its three objectives. Its most important role
is that of conserving soil and water.Trees provide natural protection against soil
erosion(侵蚀)by absorbing the excess water brought by heavy rains.
72.The first paragraph tells us that .
A.the flow of food supply is the result of population increase.
B.the world population has reached the 10-billion mark.
C.the problem of population growth has caused considerable alarm in a few
countries.

73.The Malthusian Doctrine presents as far as world population is
concerned.
A.an optimistic view of the future B.a pessimistic outlook for the future
C.an encouraging picture D.an indifferent picture
74. In this context, ‘this natural source,of life-sustaining food and fuel’
(in paragraph 2)refers to .

C.woodland products D.man’s worst enemy
75.The three—fold objectives of the FAO are adapted(调整)toward .
A.stopping population growth
B.increasing food production

‘Happiness consists in the multiplicity of agreeable consciousness,’ wrote
Samuel Johnson,a famous British writer and lexicographer(词典编写者)of the
eighteenth century.
Today, amid the large amount of worldly temptations and material sources of
modem-day enjoyment, people from all walks of life are still searching for the key
to happiness. The question ‘How call we be happy? ’seems to worry everyone.Indeed,
in this day and age of scientific advancement and heavenly comforts.people still
do not seem able to find a definite answer to the age-old problem of finding
happiness.Happiness seems to be a very difficult thing.Solon’s dictum‘ count
no man happy until he is dead’ seems to present both, the poor and the rich with
a continual threat causing them no end of anxiety.
In Oxford,England,a noted psychology professor, Dr Michael Argyle, has succeeded
in his quest for happiness.Over the past eight years, he has been researching the
mysterious antithesis(对立而)of depression, and has found convincing clues which
he has embodied in his books.‘The Psychology of Happiness’,and ‘The Social
Psychology of Everyday Life’.
Dr Argyle explains that happiness comprises three essential elements—first,
positive emotions 1ike joy;second,the absence of negative emotions like anxiety;
and lastly, the non-emotional element which means a general , more profound
satisfaction with life.
“The bigger source of happiness is a happy marriage,” Dr Argyle explains.“Job
satisfaction.”he continues,“is another essential ingredient of happiness.”Do
you feel you are doing a useful job? Do you feel you are achieving, or stand a chance
of achieving your ambitions? If you honestly have positive answers to these
questions, then eventually, you will be happy;if not, then you can still be happy
by reducing your ambitions and lowering your expectations in order to achieve
happiness.’The fact is, the higher your ambitions and dreams are,the more difficult
it will be for you to achieve your goals and therefore it will be harder to achieve
satisfaction and happiness.
Dr Argyle offers other avenues people can take to find real happiness.Music,
games or sports,a drink with a friend,a simple gathering at tea, lunch or dinner
with loved ones, or simply thinking of nice things, call give a person happiness,
if only for a few hours.Surprisingly, television programmes, especially soap operas
offers nothing but a bit of pleasurable moments. Often, television viewers are so
carried away emotionally that they feel depressed or emotionally tired. Non-soap
programmers,on the other hand, bore many viewers or sometimes deepen their misery.Dr
Argyle further explains that wealth and worldly success do contribute to
happiness. But in the ultimate analysis, Dr Argyle says, it is the person’s
temperament(性情)that makes him happy or unhappy.“There are in our midst people
who are naturally happy, and there are the sad ones.”
Happiness is indeed mysterious. As one wise mall put it, ‘Few are those who
have never had the chance to achieve happiness, but fewer those who have never taken
that chance.’

People are so busy these days that they can hardly take the time to prepare a
meal at home. Thus, a nearby restaurant usually becomes their dining-place. However,
home-cooked meals are better for many reasons.
First, home-cooked meals are cheaper. A family can buy a wide variety of cheaper
fresh food at the supermarket than in a restaurant. Next, you can buy exactly the
food you like. Restaurants sometimes serve meals with vegetables that are not wanted.
Finally, home is a more relaxing place to eat. Family members can learn more about
each other quietly at home than in a busy restaurant.
In a word, eating at home is better than eating out.
