While others look away from trouble, this lady digs in and gets to work.
Gretchen Buchenholz, the native New Yorker and mother of six, has worked on behalf of
needy and marginalized families for years in the city. She does everything from buy groceries for
homeless families to start schools for children. In 1974 she founded Merricat’s Castle, a nursery
school that opened its doors to kids of all racial and economic backgrounds, the able-bodied as
well as those with disabilities or terminal illnesses.
She founded the Association to Benefit Children (ABC), the nonprofit group, some 20 years
ago. The story of how she started ABC is pretty amazing. In 1984 she was on her way to a
government office to get a day-care permit when, by accident, she entered a room where homeless
families were waiting to be placed in a “ welfare hotel.” She saw three bare cribs (婴儿床) with
babies lying in them. The children wore no diapers (their parents couldn’t afford them), and the
room was filthy (不整洁). After talking to the parents and learning that they and their children
were hungry, Gretchen marched out and bought bread, peanut butter, apple juice and diapers. Then
she started making phone calls. She dialed the American Red Cross, City Hall and The New York
Times.
Gretchen has made many people see that we need to recognize these children are not different
from our own, and we need to join in and help. Too often, people look away from suffering. But
she sets us an example that we should gain strength to do something about it.
56. She went to the government office ______.
A. to help those homeless people in the room
B. to apply for a permit for ABC
C. to call on the government to help those homeless children
D. to get permission to look after babies during the day
57. By “But she sets us an example that we should gain strength to do something about it.”, the
author means______.
A. Gretchen Buchenholz is a respectable woman
B. we should set up such organizations as the ABC to help those poor children
C. Gretchen Buchenholz gives us the strength to face suffering in life
D. we should do our bits to help those poor children
58. The children wore no diapers because______.
A. they had no parents

A. called up City Hall to get help for those homeless people
B. moved to New York at a young age
C. treats the children equally whether they are normal or disabled
D. starts schools for those homeless children
B
Can you do the math: What is one hundred times four, divided by
the square root of a hundred? How can you work it out quickly?
The answer is forty. Years ago, three scientists at Texas
Instruments, Jerry Merryman, James Van Tassel and Jack Kilby,
invented the handheld electronic calculator. Their first device could
add, subtract, multiply and divide and it was small and easy to take.
Yet after forty years, calculators in the classroom still add up to
the same old debate. Generally calculators are considered to be
useful——especially with more complex math. Some math teachers at
every level support the use of calculators and students are even permitted to use them when they
take college entrance tests. But it is also thought that young students should know basic
calculation before they begin using them.
Some education experts think calculators are used too much. Children, they say, learn to
depend on these electronic brains instead of their own. Calculators may not only give students
answers to questions they do not really understand, they may also keep them from discovering
ideas for themselves.
Other experts, though, say calculators have helped make mathematics more understandable to
more students. They say calculators give students more time to understand and solve problems,
and to develop a better sense of what numbers mean. That way, the reasoning goes, they can feel
better about their abilities.
60. Which of the following calculation agrees with the question raised in the first paragraph?
A.100 4
100
B. 2
100 4
100
C. 2
100 4
( 100)
D.100 100 4
61. Three scientists at Texas Instruments invented .
A. the first electronic calculator B. the calculator handle
C. the portable electronic calculator D. the first calculator
62. We can infer from the passage that in the past.
A. math teachers supported using calculators everywhere
B. students were not allowed to use calculator in tests
C. using calculators in classrooms was under argument
D. young students had to know how to use calculators
63. According to experts, calculators benefit students in many ways EXCEPT .
A. providing them with answers to the questions
B. stopping them discovering ideas for themselves
C. making mathematics more understandable
D. developing a better feeling of their abilities

“English may be the global language of business but it is not enough by itself for companies
to gain a lasting presence in many markets,” the European Commission (委员会) says in a study
published last month.
The study collected by the British National Centre for Languages for the EU leader, says over
10 per cent of 2,000 small and medium-sized ( 中 等 规 模 的 ) firms in 29 European countries
sampled (抽样) in the study have lost export contract (出口合同) because of lack of language
skills. The study says French is used to trade with partners in Africa, Spanish in Latin America,
and Russian in Eastern Europe.
“The picture is far more complex than the much-quoted view that English is the world
language,” the study says.
Multilingual (多种语言的) Commissioner Leonard Orban admitted that English plays an
important role worldwide, but he wants to improve more linguistic variety within the EU.
The EU’s linguistic headaches have exploded with the group’s expansion. Languages have
become a sensitive topic in Brussels where English is increasingly eclipsing (侵蚀) French as the
main working language of the organization. Translation of EU papers into EU’s 23 official
languages costs 1 billion euros (US $1.31 billion) a year.
“We want to be open not only to official languages of the Union, but also to others like
regional (区域的) languages, languages of minorities, immigrants’ (移民) languages and third
countries’ languages,” Orband said.
Many EU students have improved their language skills during non-formal learning activities.
Young people from more than 20 different nationalities travel across Europe to participate together
in many cultural programmes, language courses, thematic workshops (主题研习会) and other
activities that are organized in about 100 cities.
67. When did the European Commission say that English is not enough by itself for trade?
A. Last week. B. Last month. C. On Dec. 20, 2006. D. On Apr. 1, 2007.
68. Which language is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Japanese. B. Spanish. C. French. D. Russian.
69. What about English in Brussels?
A. Many people are studying English. B. English is not studied by university students.
C. Most of people are interested in Russian. D. English is increasingly eclipsing French.
70. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Don’t Ignore That Study
B. Pay much Attention to English
C. Do Study Many Languages besides English
D. The Other Language Is More Important than English
Many people think a telephone is a necessity. But I think it is a pest (有害的事物) and a
time waste. Very often you find it impossible to escape from it. If you have a telephone in your
own house, you will admit that it tends to ring when you least want it to ring; when you are asleep,
or in the middle of a meal or a conversation or when you are just going out, or when you are in
your bath. Are you strong-minded enough to ignore it? You are not. You think there may be some
important news or message for you. I can assure you that if a message is really important it will
reach you sooner or later. Have you ever rushed crippling from the bath, or chewing from the table,
or dazed from the bed, only to be told that you are a wrong number?
But you will say, you need not have your name printed in the telephone directory, and you
can have a telephone which is only usable for outgoing calls. Besides, you will say, isn’t it
important to have a telephone in case of sudden emergency—illness, accident, or fire? Of course,
you are right, but here in a thickly populated country like England one is seldom far from a
telephone in case of dreadful necessity.
I think perhaps I had better try to justify (证明是有理的) myself by trying to prove that
what I like is good. I admit that in different circumstances—if I were a wealthy and powerful
businessperson, for instance, or badly ill and had to lie in bed, I might find a telephone a necessity.
But then if I were a taxi-driver I should find a car as necessity. Let me put it another way: there are
two things for which the English seem to show particular talent: one is mechanical invention, the
other literature. My own business happens to be with the use of words but I see I must now stop
using them, for I have had just been handed a slip of paper to say that somebody is waiting to
speak to me on the telephone. I think I had better answer it. After all, one never knows, it may be
something important.

One possible version:
Good morning boys and girls,
We high school students do have some growing pains, but we can get rid of them correctly
and wisely.
First, some of us are upset about their body styles and looks. It’s unnecessary and it’s not
important at all. We needn’t care about it. It is one’s inner beauty that matters. Second, we
sometimes seem to be misunderstood by our teachers, parents and classmates. Facing this, we can
find a proper time to have a heart-to-heart talk with them, trying to remove the misunderstanding.
Some of us have fewer friends. I think being open-minded and friendly will do you good. Third,
we may fall behind others, which makes us stressed. Actually we can encourage ourselves to work
efficiently, full of determination. Last, some of us don’t have much pocket money, so they feel
unhappy. Isn’t it strange? So long as we have some, that’s enough. And we can learn to spend
money!
That’s all. Thank you.

W: Thank you. I’m glad you like it. I have a good time playing the piano.
M: How long have you been playing?
W: I’ve been studying the piano for ten years, since I was nine years old.
M: Really? I didn’t know that. Ten years!
W: Oh, yes. Learning to play the piano takes a lot of work. But it’s all worth it.
M: Worth it? Do you make money playing the piano?
W: I didn’t mean it that way, but I do make some money. Sometimes, I play at wedding receptions
or at parties. I get paid for doing what I like to do. I never had it so good.

W: Hello, George! I wanted to speak to you yesterday, but you weren’t at your usual place for
lunch.
M: No, I had a free day from the newspaper office because I worked so much overtime last week.
W: Oh, I see. You had a holiday.
M: Well! I stayed at home and looked after the baby.
W: What! You took care of the baby? Whose baby?
M: Oh, it was my sister’s baby. She wanted to go shopping in the morning. So I stayed at home
and did a lot of useful things.
W: Oh?
M: Yes. I mended my radio, washed a shirt and some socks, and cleaned out the drawers of my
desk.
W: I don’t call that a holiday. I wanted to ask you to a concert last night. The one at the Town Hall
near where we lived.
M: That’s funny! My office called me in the afternoon and asked me to go and write an article
about the concert. I noticed that you weren’t there, but your friend Mary was.
W: Was she indeed? That’s very strange.

In Britain, if you break the law, you can be sent to prison or be fined or be ordered to do
community work such as cleaning public places and helping the old. There are two sorts of prisons:
the open sort and the closed sort. In the closed sort, prisoners are given very little freedom. They
spend three to ten hours outside their rooms when they exercise, eat, study, learn skills, watch TV
and talk to other prisoners. All prisoners are expected to work. Most of them are paid for what
they do, whether it is cooking or cleaning. Prisoners in open prisons are locked up at night, but for
the best of the time, they are free within the prison grounds. They can exercise, have visitors, or
study. And some are allowed out of the ground to study or to do community work.
