If your boss asks you to work in Moscow this year, he’d better offer you more money to do
so — or even double that depending on where you live now. That’s because Moscow has just been
found to be the world’s most expensive city for the second year in a row by Mercer Human
Resources Consulting.
Using the cost of living in New York as a base, Mercer determined Moscow is 34.4 percent
more expensive including the cost of housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods and
entertainment.
A two-bedroom flat in Moscow now costs $4,000 a month; a CD $24 . 83, and an
international newspaper $6.30, according to Mercer.By comparison, a fast food meal with a
hamburger is a steal at $4.80.
London takes the No.2 place, up from No.5 a year ago, thanks to higher cost of housing and
a stronger British pound relative to the dollar . Mercer estimates London is 26 percent more
expensive than New York these days.Following London closely are Seoul and Tokyo, both of
which are 22 percent more expensive than New York, while No.5 Hong Kong is 19 percent more
costly.
Among North American cities, New York and Los Angeles are the most expensive and are
the only two listed in the top 50 of the world’s most expensive cities. But both have fallen since
last year’s study — New York came in 15th, down from 10th place, while Los Angeles fell to
42nd from 29th place a year ago.San Francisco came in a distant third at No.54, down 20 places
from a year earlier.

worldwide. In Australia, Sydney is the priciest place to live in and No.21 worldwide.

A German company was concerned about talks in Moscow trying to sell some 100 million
dollars worth of equipment to a Russian State company .Talks went smoothly but differences
remained . So Martin Bayer himself, the CEO of the German Company, decided to come to
Moscow to head the talks.Besides caring about his business, the CEO wanted to go to Russia to
hunt bears.
Martin Bayer was one of the greatest hunters of our time (and the Russians knew about
it).He went to the Sahara more than hundred times and hunted lions, crocodiles; he hunted polar
bears in the North Pole and tigers in the rain forests of India. But he had never hunted Russian
bears.
So the Russians decided to organize a bear hunt for Mr.Bayer to sweeten the talks. This
wasn't a simple task. Some people in the west still believe that bears may be found and seen
everywhere in Russian cities just like squirrels may be seen in our backyards. This is not true. The
closest place one may find bears in the wild is maybe 2,500 miles away from Moscow. However,
a solution was quickly found. The Russian businessmen went to Moscow Circus(马戏团)and for
$2,000 bought a very old bear. This bear used to amuse and amaze audiences in many countries
for 30 years, but got and looked too old, and was retired.
“Be careful, the Russian bears are very dangerous, and frightening,” they told to
Mr.Bayer.“If compared to the Russian bears, your African lions are nothing more than harmless
cats.” The bear was brought to a forest 50 miles from Moscow and was left there.Mr.Bayer was
told that bears were plentiful in that forest and that many cattle and even people had been eaten in
the surrounding villages.
Meanwhile, an 18-year old female drove through the forest on a motorcycle and suddenly
saw a bear (no bears had been seen in those places for 200 years). She was frightened, fell, left her
helmet and her motorcycle and ran away.
Mr.Bayer was excited and ready to hunt. This could become the most successful part of his
extraordinary hunting experience. The next moment Mr.Bayer saw a bear in a helmet driving on
a motorcycle through the forest in front of him.The bear had a happy expression on his face, as he
was doing something he had been doing in the circus for 30 years: circling on a motorcycle!
Mr . Bayer lives in a private mental institution near Hamburg happily ever after . The
equipment was never sold to Russia. It was sold to Iraq instead.
74.Why did the Russians invite Mr.Bayer to hunt bears?
A.Russian bears are famous for their cruelty.
B.They managed to find a bear for hunting.
C.They expected the trade to be successful.
D.There was a bear in Moscow Circus.
75.Why did the Russians say “Be careful, the Russian bears are very dangerous and frightening”?
A.To tell Mr.Bayer that many people had been killed by bears.
B.To make Mr.Bayer feel the hunting really challenging.
C.To warn Mr.Bayer to mind his safety while hunting.
D.To tell Mr.Bayer that the bear is really dangerous.
76.We can infer from the last paragraph that __________.
A.Mr.Bayer has gone mad
B.the bear injured him badly
C.he has worked in a mental institution since then
D.the trade has gone smoothly between Russian and Iraq
77.Which would be the best title of the passage?
A.Mr.Bayer, a Brave Hunter B.Russian Bears, Dangerous Animals
C.Don’t Hunt in Russia D.Don’t Deal with the Russians
D
Do you love holidays, but hate the increase in weight that follows? You are not
alone.Holidays are time for splendid meals and celebrating, especially with the traditional cultural
foods.
With proper planning, though, it is possible to keep normal weight during the holidays. The
idea is to enjoy the holidays and think about moderation (节制).Whether it is celebrating at the
office party or sitting down for the traditional family dinner, regard eating as a time for tasting a
variety of foods. Here are some tips to carry you through the round of celebrations and your social
calendar without feeling having done wrong.
Set some goals that you can reach.Unless you have special needs to go on a diet, there are no
forbidden foods.Don’t turn down the foods you enjoy, but be sensible.
Before you leave home, have a small, low-fat meal or snack. This can help you to avoid
eating or drinking much . Use a small luncheon-size plate and avoid the large ones that may
encourage you to “load up”.You should be most comfortable eating an amount of food about the
size of your fist . Once you have had your “tasting” serving, move away from the dining
room.Doing so will make it easy to stop yourself eating constantly at the sight of food.
Eat slowly and fill up beforehand with clear soup and raw fruit or vegetables and fruit in a
yogurt (酸奶) dressing rather than cream and cheese sauces. You can also drink a large glass of
water before you eat to help you feel full.
If you have a sweet tooth, try mints, hard candies, and fruits. These don't have the fat content
of creamy desserts and chocolate.
Avoid high-fat foods . Dishes that look oily or creamy may have a generous amount of
fat.Choose lean meats.Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables.
Don’t let exercise take a break during the holidays.A 20-minute walk after a meal can help
burn off extra calories.
78.The underlined sentence “You are not alone.” here means that________.
A.you are firmly supported by a lot of people
B.many people are with you and you'll never be alone
C.the situation mentioned above is common among many people
D.many people enjoy holidays and seldom hate putting on weight
79.What does the writer actually tell you when he says “Don’t turn down the foods you enjoy, but
sensible”?
A.You can enjoy your favorite foods but don't eat too much.
B.You must pour down the foods you enjoy, for it is reasonable.
C.You shouldn't refuse anything you like and eat it as much as possible.
D.You ought to accept what you enjoy and refuse what you don't.
80.Which of the following may be a great favorite of a person who has a sweet tooth?
A.Clear soup and raw fruit. B.Salad and green vegetables.
C.Mints, hard candies and fruits. D.Creamy desserts and chocolate.
81.The passage mainly tells you __ during the holidays.
A.how to follow a healthy diet B.how to control your portions (食量)
C.how to maintain your normal weight D.how to maintain physical activity

A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to
learn in general history classes. Most typical history courses concentrate on politics, economics
and war.But art history focuses on much more than this because art reflects not only the political
values of a people, but also religious beliefs, emotions and psychology. In addition, information
about the daily activities of our ancestors can be provided by art . In short, art expresses the
essential qualities of a time and a place, and a study of it clearly offers us a deeper understanding
than can be found in most history books.
In history books, objective information about the political life of a country is presented; that
is, facts about politics are given, but opinions are not expressed . Art, on the other hand, is
subjective: it reflects personal emotions and opinions. The great Spanish painter Francisco Goya
was perhaps the first truly “political” artist. In his well-known painting The Third of May, 1808, he
criticized the Spanish government for its abuse of power over people.
In the same way, art can reflect a culture’s religious beliefs. For hundreds of years in Europe,
religious art had been almost the only type of art that existed . Churches and other religious
buildings were filled with paintings that described people and stories from the Bible.Although
most people couldn’t read, they could still understand the Bible stories in the pictures on church
walls.By contrast, one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was (and still is) its
absence of human and animal images. This reflects the Islamic belief that statues are not holy.
82.We learn from the first paragraph that _________.
A.history class concentrates on religious beliefs and emotion
B.history books focus on personal emotions and opinions
C.art history shows us something about emotions and beliefs
D.art history shows us nothing but the political values
83.It can be inferred from the text that _______.
A.history teachers must be quite subjective
B.artists paint people from the Bible to show their political beliefs
C.you can hardly find animal and human images in Islamic paintings
D.painters in Europe only painted Bible stories for centuries
84.Francisco Goya and his painting are used as an example to show________.
A.art is subjective, which is different from history books
B.Spanish government abused its power over people
C.in history books, facts about politics are given
D.Francisco Goya was the first “political” artist
85.The text mainly discusses ________.
A.the development of art history
B.what can we learn from art
C.the influence of art on art history
D.the difference between general history and art history

Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and
we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life.To
what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?
In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes . While people
traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be
more self-absorbed and self-concerned.
Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a
jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy.Obviously
greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything
they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way
advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to
outside influences.
In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and
selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did
greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not
ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure
compared with their modern counterparts.
Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer
either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing
the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish.Caring for others can
actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.
In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to
strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being
caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.
Are Modern People Becoming More Selfish?
