The job of an air hostess（空姐）is not as easy as it looks. Most people that travel by air read, or
sleep, or look out of the window. They don’t trouble the air hostess much. But some people ask
questions and complain from start to finish, and are very difficult to please.
There is the man who wants to know exactly where he is all the time.
“Can you tell me where we are?” he asks. “It’s getting rather dark outside and I always like to see
where we are on the map.”
“Well, we’re over the Atlantic,” the hostess answers, “so there wouldn’t be much o see even in the
daytime.”
“Do you think we’d be somewhere about here on this black line?”
“I should think so, yes. About there.”
What else can she say? The plane has been in the air for an hour. How far has it traveled in that
time? There is no time to work it out, for an old lady is having trouble with her evening meal.
Another gentleman asks what time will be when the plane flies over the American coast; yet
another wonders whether it is as dangerous in New York as he has heard it is; and a third asks
whether he plane is traveling forwards in time or backwards.
As night falls and lights are going out, the air hostess decides that there are three sorts of people in
the world; those who can not sleep and those who will not sleep. The nonsleepers are the reason
why the job of an air hostess is difficult.

Birthday Traditions in Different Countries
Some birthday traditions are quite similar in many parts of the world. For example, birthday
cakes and birthday candles, birthday games to see how much more a child can do after one year,
and birthday pinches or taps which give good luck for the coming year. Some traditions are only
seen in one country.
Argentina—Dance the waltz at 15. when girls turn 15, they have a huge party and dance the
waltz with their fathers and other boys.
China—Noodles for lunch. The birthday child pays respect to his or her parents and receives
money as a present. Friends and relatives are invited to lunch and noodles are served to wish the
birthday child a long life.
Germany—Candles burn for the whole day. A member of the family wakes up at sunrise and
lights some candles on the birthday cake. There are as many candles as the age of the birthday
person plus one for good luck. The candles are left burning all day long. After dinner that night,
everyone sings the birthday song and the birthday person blows out the candles. If all of the
candles are blown out in the first try, then the wish of the birthday person will come true. Presents
are then opened and the party stars.
India—Colored dresses and chocolates. At school, the birthday child wears a colored dress
and gives chocolates to the whole class with the help of a good friend.
Italy—Pulling ears. The child’s ears are pulled as many times as their age.
Russia—Birthday pies. Instead of a birthday cake, many Russian children receive a birthday
pie. A birthday greeting is carved into the crust.
